Claire
How do you feel about cover songs? Covers can be great if done properly. I love the Iron and Wine version of "Such Great Heights," and there's a String Quartet tribute to AFI that's very nice. On the AFI front, though, there's one CD full of AFI covers that are completely horrible. I understand that the point of covering a song is to remake it in a different style, creating new twists for it, but that album is just too too bad. I haven't heard the full songs, though, so maybe my distaste shouldn't just be based on thirty second samples. One of my favorite covers is AFI's version of "Jack the Ripper," originally by Morrissey. I also like The Pixies' "Where Is My Mind" by Placebo. Rasputina has several amazing covers as well. One of their EPs, the Lost and Found, is made up of only cover songs. They've done a range of different songs, from Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" to Marilyn Manson's "Tourniquet" to Melanie's "Brand New Key" (I couldn't remember the original artist at first). Finally, if you could have any band cover any song, who would you pick to do what song, and why? I would LOVE to hear AFI cover "Zero" by Smashing Pumpkins. It has a very AFI-like sound to it, and I think it would be amazing for them to perform it. 2010DigitalBoy
Funny, I had actually thought of creating this same thread a couple hours ago, but I remembered there being one before and wasn't sure about it. Covers are alright, if done correctly. If a bad just rehashes an old song and doesn't add anything to it, then there's no point. Covers shouldn't be released as singles in my opinion, at least if the song was a single when the first band did it. Just seems like riding someone else's coat-tails. There are a lot of cool covers out there. Land of Confusion by Disturbed (and Shout 2000) are pretty cool and in my opinion better than the In Flames version. Type O Negative does a great job of both Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young) and Angry Inch (some movie). System of a Down's rendition of Snowblind (Black Sabbath) is also great. My alltime favorite cover-song, though, is probably Kneel To The Cross by Agalloch (you can hear it on purevolume.com) a cover of a Sol Indictus song. My dream band-covering-song would be Coheed And Cambria doing Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen) or Limelight (Rush). Or perhaps TV on the Radio doing Rain from the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack.
DeadSeraphim
Dear Clurr, There is - believe it or not - bands that are not AFI, or cover bands of AFI. I fear that this is a fact you have yet to realise, and as such believe it is up to myself to educate you otherwise. They exist, Clurr. They're out there - playing! They're waiting for you to listen to them, and be amazed by their gooditude. Dare you disappoint them, Clurr? Dare you disappoint them?! Yours miraculously, Dead
Crap, I'm really sorry. Albert Flasher
Cover songs are a mixed blessing. I mean, on one hand you've got Stevie Ray Vaughan's classic live covers of Voodoo Child, The Sky is Crying and Superstition (By Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder, respectivly), and George Thorogood's classic cover of the Rock n' Roll national anthem, Johnny B. Goode, is one of my all time favourites. Tom Cochrane's version of Spirit in the Sky is a refreshing take on a classic. They were all testements to the originals, but none of them really outdid them. Some times, though, the cover does outdo the original; Jonas' version of Edge of Seventeen completely outdoes Stevie's version IMO, not a great song that was improved on and is now listenable. To me, Warren Zevon outdoes the great Bob Dylan with his version of Knockin' On Heaven's Door. The Guess Who broke out with their cover of Shakin' All Over. All of these songs IMO outdid the originals. But man, when covers go wrong... they just go wrong. Like Hillary Duff (No bold for you!) doing My Generation; doubleyou tee ef? Just... no, it shouldn't happen, it's not right. Or Snoop Dogg's massacre of Rider's on the Storm. I mean, enough said... Jim Morisson is rolling in his cocaine-encrusted grave!
Semjaza
Brand New Key was originally by a female artist known as Melanie. The cover listed is indeed good.

Also, as I was saying earlier before Clurr mutilated my post like an uncertified surgeon, everyone should hear Ben Fold's version of Such Great Heights, if only for the fact he plays his phone's ringtone at the end. that is all.
Retribution
I happened upon John Mayer's cover of Radiohead's Kid A (the song, not the album) which ended up being excellent. I also like Kid Beyond's cover of Portishead's Wandering Star.
Prince Van
There are a lot of cool covers out there, There's Breaking Benjamin's cover of "Who Wants To live Forever" originally by Queen, Feeder's covers "Can't Stand Losing You", "Everybody Hurts" and "The Power of Love", by The Police, REM and Frankie Goes to Hollywood respectively. And another good Frankie Goes to Hollywood Cover is Powerman 5000's version of "Relax". AFI have done good covers, I especially like their cover of "My Michelle" originally by Guns 'n' Roses and I think their cover of Nine Inch Nails "Head Like a Hole" is cool. I've only heard one cover of an AFI song and that "Totalimmortal" by The Offspring which I like. I suppose Dragonforce doing a ocver of "Every Breath You Take" by The Police would cool, it would be hilarious to listen to, I wonder if it'd be fast or not, hmmm... Morpheus
Sometimes covers are even better than the original songs. Case and point: All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix.
Retribution
I just remembered that Johnny Cash covered Hurt by Nine Inch Nails and did an amazing job. Did he do a cover of the entire album, on just that song? I must admit, it was quite an odd combination, but it was executed pretty well.

Claire
I just recently heard Smashing Pumpkins' cover of "Landslide," originally written by Stevie Nicks and performed by Fleetwood Mac (I think). I've only heard the Dixie Chicks' cover and my semantics teacher playing it on guitar, but I'm pretty positive this is my absolute favorite version of the song. I just wish I had heard this cover first, because it's just stuck as a country song in my mind.
Boo
Here comes the Boo, dooweedoowee. The Guano Apes' version of Big In Japan (Alphaville, I think) is quite cool. And this is very hard for me to admit, but I think the Scissor Sisters made a funky version of Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd). In it's own way, this discofied version is quite cool.
Anakoni Stark
Well my favourite cover, has to be Imagine orginally by John Lennon and covered by A Perfect Circle, I just love the dark, hollow, and "you-know-we're-screwed-why-are-you-even-trying" feeling they give the song my second favourite Insistutionalized orginally done by the Suicidal Tendencies, and covered by Senses Fail, I mean I like how the give it that hardcore screamo sound. My second favourite has to be Start Today I dont remember the orignal artist but I do know that Fall Out Boy covered, they're first song they dont sound emo in. I would like to hear Marylin Manson cover The Outsider by A Perfect Circle, I just thought a more metal sound of a song against suicide, would get the message though to people - Dario
Fall
Land Of Confusion by Disturbed, Shout 2000 by Disturbed, Blue Monday by Orgy, You Spin Me Right Round by Marilyn Manson, Personal Jesus by Marilyn Manson, Another Brick In The Wall (Parts 1, 2, and 3.) by KoRn. They're all awesome cover songs by amazing bands, most noticeably Disturbed, and KoRn. I love Disturbed's sound. I'd like to hear The Memory Remains, by Metallica, done by Disturbed. That'd sound sweet.
TheShinje
Marilyn Manson covered You Spin Me Right Round? God help us all... I, having gone through a covers phase, have amassed quite a collection of good cover songs. Korn do an amazing cover of Anothe rBrick in the Wall (pt. 1,2,3) and the two Distrubed covers, Land of Confusion and Shout 2000 are awesome tracks as well. But I'd have to say that, if you really enjoy your cover songs, you might want to check out Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. PWNED
You cannot honestly forget about the best cover artist in America, Richard Cheese and Lounge against the Machines. They do Jazz covers of tons of different songs such as Enter Sandman, Down with the Sickness and Gangsters Paradise. They are totally hilarious and take the cake for oddly awesome songs.
