Well we now know that Darren will be undertaking this for the LOLs. If Mike doesn't answer in the next 4 hours (give or take), I'll officially announce you in the main thread as our representative, Beth. If you're still up for it :P.
Fine by me though I'm done for the night and won't have time to address this until much later, but realistically I wouldn't have time to put together an opening statement until tomorrow. And then if Mike [strike]who has been on today by the way[/strike] hasn't responded by the end of the four hours I say we bonk him on the head since we've known about the new debate for a while now. :p Either way if I have time I'll check later tonight, and if not definitely tomorrow to see who is up to bat so to speak. :catgirl:

Actually, you don't even have to make any announcements. The one chosen to debate should immediately post their opening statement, just like in the last round. ;D

Ah, in that case.

*thrust hand forward*

Onward to victory, Beth!

:D
So long as Sandy doesn't mind that I'm not going to have time to address it tonight either. >_< But I will be able to present an opening statement tomorrow.

EDIT: All right my opening statement is up, it may look a little slim, but I've got good information to back up the points and to use in a final closing statement. I didn't want to put all my cards on the table up front since some of them are well suited to countering some of the pros of making it legal. ^_~

-----------------------------------------

You know I'm actually part of the debate this time around and yet because of how slow this is...it's boring! >_< So I can only imagine how the rest of you must feel. And sorry Sandy, but that's just how I feel, if you follow the same format as the previous debate then other than my one response all I have left is my final argument, which I can write up without any further response from my opponent. And in fact I already have written most of it up. :animesigh

Anyway, speak up team! It feels like it's gotten awfully dead and quiet around here! As a fellow team member what's your take on the current debate format? Personally I think there should be more than one debate at a time since it's not that hard to keep track of different issues. Because at this rate, especially for the two of you who are not debating, you're going to be doing nothing for at least another month. And I for one would like to get the show on the road and see what Sandy has in mind for the next challenge! [Pokes Sandy!]

Heh, Mary and I were actually discussing things we could do for the thread while we wait through the bulk of this challenge. I couldn't really think of anything aside from simply discussing various subjects with one another, so i figure I'll go ahead and bring some things up while we think of something else.

As for the debate, the format of 3 posts per person seems very restricting to me but seeing how slow they have been going thus far, anything more and we wouldn't finish this challenge until christmas. So it's neccesary unfortunatley. I just hope Darren gets his post up before the weekend.

Alright then, I guess i'll go ahead and bring something up that i've been curious about.

What kind of movies does everyone watch/books everyone reads? The genre is chiefly what i'm asking, but you guys can mention favorites too =).

Yeah, let's get some life back into this party.

Still no word from Mike about anything, wonder what's happened to him >.>

Hmm, for movies I'm really willing to watch anything besides Thrillers or Horror movies. I've never been good with that type of thing since I was young. I personally love comedies and romantic comedies. Though I like watching action, romance (by itself) and fantasy movies.

As for books, hmm, I kinda like mysteries, fantasy, adventures. I'm not a fan of historical type books or biographies unless they're funny, which they usually aren't.

I'll add another quick question in, How about what type of music everyone likes? Matt and I were discussing that a couple of days ago so now I'm curious about everyone else.

Sorry, during this whole debate round I've lost most interest in Survivor 4. It reminds me a lot of the Pokemon round in OBS3. Slow, repetitive and boring.

I know Sandy has a good event planned next, since he always does. But still... ugh.

The whole slow and boring effect is getting to all of us i'm sure, heh. But we must endure.

In reference to the questions:

In terms of movies I love action/adventure movies, which includes just about any kind of martial arts movie. I also enjoy fantasy and sci-fi.

To me, a great storyline can really only be conveyed through a serious overtone, with only hints of comedy rather then the whole movie be a comedy itself. You can imagine my dissapointment in having a real strength of mine neutralized by out script theme when it came to the last round challenge, regardless I still enjoyed it very much (as well as The Titan's script, you can ask Mary as I told her that, so i'm not just saying it because this is my team now :P). But Action and adventure really plays a huge role in interesting and detailed story telling for me, when it comes to movies like Face/Off, Gladiator, Braveheart, etc. It doesn't apply to every one of them, but it provides the greatest area for potential I believe.

When it comes to Martial Arts movies, it's really less about the story then it is about the action. Put Jet Li, Tony Jaa, Bruce Lee, Tak Sakaguchi, Donnie Yen, even Jackie Chan on a screen for me and you almost instantly have my attention. Though the proper combination with the right director is always neccesary, it is not so much with the writer as I can thoroughly enjoy a martial arts movie that is more about the fighting then it is about the story. It doesn't mean I do not enjoy it or think it's essential, but that's what the other movies in the genre are for. Plus there have been countless MA movies that have conveyed a wonderful story (House of flying daggers for one, which also had strong themes of romance which I tend to enjoy as well).

Sci fi and fantasy pretty much appeals to the same part of me that enjoys anime, the expansion of the imagination past it's popularly perceived borders. I'm a big Stargate fan when it comes to television, and enjoy movies such as FFVII: AC, Titan A.E, and virtually any vampire movie (I can very much do without another Blade movie however...)

Books...well to be quite honest I don't read all that much, but I do every now and then and have recently finished the Moss Roberts translation of Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Davinci Code.

Music, I listen to many types...i consider myself an eclectic person when it comes to this as I listen to everything from american rock and rap to j-pop, k-pop, to more classical music.

My favorite bands/singers include:

-Aerosmith
-Red Hot Chilli Peppers
-Breaking Benjamin
-Anberlin
-Linkin Park
-Incubus
-Foo Fighters
-Matchbox 20
-Goo Goo Dolls
-FLOW
-Uverworld
-Ayumi Hamasaki
-Namie Amuro
-Orange Range
-Van Tomiko
-nobody knows+

...many more.

Anyone with similar/other interests?
Question to all team members in all teams: What are you[/I'] expecting from the future of OtakuBoards Survivor 4?
Dunno. OBS4 has been so different compared to the other OBS' (which is bad and good). I can't really say. I've got to say, I liked it when we roleplayed. It's what made it cool. It was like an event, but you were someone else in the event. Now we're just ourselves and it's... not as fun. I don't know... :animesigh

P.S. Sandy, I don't mean to insult you. I still love OBS. This is all just in comparison with your other OBS'.

Okay, so... my movie and music tastes are the same. I like everything. Heck I'll even watch Crossroads with Britney Spears if there's someone there to watch it with me. Any movie can be fun.

However the types of movies I like most are Thinkers. The kind of movie where you leave the theatre thinking "Oh, what if soandso did this!" By that I mean films like Stranger Than Fiction and SAW.

Question to all team members in all teams: What are you[/I'] expecting from the future of OtakuBoards Survivor 4?
Well you see I was expecting...blah, blah, blah, Oh never mind since you've said this:
I have decided to discontinue this challenge after this round, and award both The Mercenaries and whichever team wins this debate. The two losing teams won't be punished, though. The reason is that I want to vitalize this game with a more active challenge.

Hope nobody feels bad for this decision. The heat is on, Survivors!
I'm not sure what to expect, though I know I won't miss the debate part, even though I think it's fun in terms of the actual debate, it's just dragging out so slowly that I feel bad for all the other players being left sitting on the side watching. And even if the losing team won't be punished, I still intend to go for the goal and win. :catgirl:

--------------------------------------------
As for the questions from my teammates, lets see...

As far as movies go I'm rather fond of both sci-fi and fantasy, but mostly sci-fi. Though I do like the occasional romance story like EverAfter. Action is alright so long as the action is well done and I even like martial arts. I recently saw House of Flying Daggers and rather enjoyed it. Comedy is fun as well, especially some of the more wacky stuff like Big Mamma, stupid as hell and yet I really enjoyed it. (though I'd never watch it again)

If we were to get into favorites, I would have to say the original Star Wars movies since one of my first memories of going to movies was when my grandparents took me and my siblings to see Star Wars in the theaters back in 1977. :catgirl: I've been hooked ever since!

If we get into TV, then my favorite sci-fi show is Dr. Who. I've been watching that for as long as I can remember. I have over 20 VHS tapes with episodes as well as most of the DVD's as I've been collecting them. And most of all I've been positively thrilled that they are making the show again.

Lets see as for music. I like a mix of rock, light metal, soundtracks and classical. Most of the more recent stuff I'm not too familiar with, and in the end my favorite is the soundtracks, like stuff by John Williams and the classical. I use to play the violin and I've also had voice lessons as well as tiny bit of piano and organ. And in the end, though I love stuff with a good beat I end up going back to my soundtracks and classical. Lately I've been into listening to Rachmaninoff's piano concertos.

Probably about the only thing I don't like is rap and country. There are a few I do like, but not very many. >_< And one other thing, singers that sing off key, that just grates on my nerves. Blech! I can tolerate it to a certain extent, but some of them are just awful.

Well, while i would have rather the challenge started off with 2 debates at a time and go at that pace (since it would have kept all 4 teams busy and made the entire thing go quicker), I suppose i'm fine with it just ending short for the sake of seeing what the next challenge it.

I can't help but feel it was a bit of a waste to begin with because of the way it's turning out, especially since I was looking forward to debating personally. But eh, I'll deal with it.

Since the only teams to be rewarded will be tied with the same amount of points, will the prize the winning teams will be sharing be the one intended for first place?

Not exactly. I'll reveal the prize when the winners are clear, and both winning teams will get the same reward.

Well first and foremost, many welcomes to Ezekiel. It is great to have you aboard. Go ahead and tell us a bit about yourself if you'd like and let us know what you would like to be called =).

On another note, we seem to have received a rather no-so-subtle hint as to what the next challenge will be. Lyrical seems to point in the direction of another writing challenge, which certainly makes yours truly a happy camper if it is indeed so. Poems and Songwriting seem to be the more obvious examples of what Sandy could be talking about, or perhaps it's in a completely different direction. The hint may indeed be a bit of a thrower offer.

Perhaps a musical? Lawl.

Well, what's there to say. Many of you already know my name's Jamie, but I like being called 'Zeke so stick with that if you like. My strengths are making graphics and creative writing, but I'll try my hand at anything really.

I like fantasy novels and anime (dur) and I'm curretly in my first year of college (UK, not America).

I've also only just got out of bed so can't think of much else to say, but there's me in a nutshell.

Thanks so much for taking me on board!

Well it looks like the new challenge is up! o_O And though I think it will be fun I haven't a clue how to do the actual music part. And I mean that literally. I've had it explained to me many many times and yet I've yet to figure out how to host music and put it up on my own site. Every time someone has sent me a thing on how to do it, it made no sense. I don't even know the code for doing what Sandy suggested. >_<

I know you provided the music for the screenplay White, but that never worked for me. And though it's unrelated to the actual contest, I really want to understand just how in the heck one does music online! Not writing the lyrics part because I understand that just fine, but hosting it and then getting it to actually work. :animesigh

That's strange, Beth, because the music from the script challenge worked fine for me. Are you missing plugins?

I laughed when I saw the name of the challenge since something about "Smells like Team Spirit" came up with me yesterday, and the irony of it popping up again was quite funny actually.

Aaaanyways, the first thing we need to decide on is the song I think, so we have a rhythm to fit the lyrics into. I'm not a fan of writing lyrics because I think I'm actually quite bad at it, but I'll give it my best shot. So um...anyone have ideas for a melody?

That's strange, Beth, because the music from the script challenge worked fine for me. Are you missing plugins?
I'm pretty sure it's not a missing plugin issue since usually when that's the case Firefox tells me I'm missing plugins. And I keep things updated and it doesn't work in IE either. What happens is I get this screen: Error I still don't know how to host music and get it to work in a web page let alone a post though.

As for the actual writing lyrics and such, I have done some limited music writing for different amateur plays where I composed the melody and the lyrics. But it's been a while since I've actually done it. I'm not sure on a melody though. I'll have to think about it.

There are several websites that provide uploading and linking for songs that I am used to using. We can use one of those since the song only needs to be up temporarily (most links are good for either an amount of days or an amount of DLs, so we can provide more then one link to the same song).

As for the choice of song, i've noticed over the time i've talked with many different people from OB that what is considered popular by most standards is quite dependant on many other things, such as location and interest. Myself and Mary have talked extensivley about the subject of music before and we have each been able to name all sorts of bands and songs that neither one of us have heard of. So no matter what, when a song is proposed to put these lyrics to, it is important that every member of the team hears it first whether it be to jolt their memory, familiarize them with it, or just if they want to hear it to see how well it would fit. This way even if each member isn't familiar with the song, they will be. Though it shouldn't be more toward the obscure side, as Sandy said...it should be something that most people should know of.

As for lyrics, we have many talented writers amongst our ranks. I'm not worried a bit about us putting something catchy and clever here. Once our song is chosen, we can breakdown the parts of the song, and each of us that wants to can take a part of the song and work custom lyrics into the mix. Those who would prefer not to do the lyric writing can be in charge of other parts of the challenge such as presentation work (gfx, song finding, etc). Either way, everyone in the team will be chipping in their brilliance as Sandy requested ;).

Perhaps we shold compile a list of songs by popular suggestion. Let's keep in mind that all of our names must be mentioned, and that we must include some kind of theme for us.

First, let's decide on a genre. I'll throw my suggestion in the hat now and say i think it should be something Pop, simply because it has the best chance of being recognized, whether it's a pop of one culture, or another. That's a more general choice that we can play with for hours thinking of what kind of songs to use. If not that, then there are our typical worldwide popular Rock artists such as Linkin Park and Aerosmith. Or perhaps even a television show theme?

The music from the script challenge only works with certain browsers (whether it's Firefox or IE, I forget).

Anyway, I say we use Fresh Prince of Bel Air as our melody or music or whatever. It's easy to fit lyrics into and it's well-known (as in if you don't know it you should kill yourself). Either that or the original Pokemon Theme Song, aha.

Also, I'm totally up for doing lyrics. I love that kind of stuff. I could also help with graphics (though I would prefer Zeke did that since she's more qualified).

I say YES to the Pokemon Theme, because really...who hasn't heard it? (Even if you don't want to.) It's also terribly catchy. I'm even singing it now just from reading the name!

I'm very happy to do graphics, as lyrics aren't my strong point, but it might be a nice idea if someone did the main verses and everyone came up with the lyric that included themselves?

Or perhaps we could do a lyric for each other, sort of like a team-bonding thing?

Just to give you guys an idea of how easy it would be to change the lyrics to ones of our own, here are the words to the Pokemon Theme Song.

POKEMON THEME
(extended version)

Verse 1
I wanna be the very best
like no one ever was.
To catch them is my real test,
To train them is my cause.

I will travel across the land,
searching far and wide.
Each Pokemon to understand
the power that's inside.

Chorus
Pokemon (gotta catch 'em all)!
It's you and me.
I know it's my destiny...
Pokemon! Oooh, you're my best friend
in a world we must defend.
Pokemon (gotta catch 'em all)!
A heart so true.
Our courage will pull us through.

You teach me and I'll teach you,
Po-ke-mon! Gotta catch 'em all!
Gotta catch 'em all (yeah).

Verse 2
Every challenge along the way
with courage I will face.
I will battle every day
to claim my rightful place.

Come with me,
the time is right,
there's no better team.
Arm in arm we'll win the fight.
It's always been our dream!

Chorus
Pokemon (gotta catch 'em all)!
It's you and me.
I know it's my destiny...
Pokemon! Oooh, you're my best friend
in a world we must defend.
Pokemon (gotta catch 'em all)!
A heart so true.
Our courage will pull us through.

You teach me and I'll teach you,
Po-ke-mon! Gotta catch 'em all!
Gotta catch 'em all (gotta catch 'em all).

Bridge
Gotta catch 'em all.
Gotta catch 'em all!
Yeah!

Chorus
Pokemon (gotta catch 'em all)!
It's you and me.
I know it's my destiny...
Pokemon! Oooh, you're my best friend
in a world we must defend.
Pokemon (gotta catch 'em all)!
A heart so true.
Our courage will pull us through.

You teach me and I'll teach you,
Po-ke-mon! Gotta catch 'em all!
Gotta catch 'em all!

Pokemon!

Heh, boy that brings back memories.

I agree with Zeke's idea of each person doing a set of lyrics for another member rather then us doing out own. But before we handle that, we should think of a central theme we should be singing about, as it concerns our team. Which will probably be the chorus. Perhaps something about incomparable domination ;P. Or The Titans reaching our destiny.
