What makes a good role player?

What do you think makes a person a good role player? Try not to use specific people as examples (I don't want people playing favourites here). But what aspects of their writing do you find makes them a good roleplayer?

Personally, for just a general roleplayer, I think it's their character development. A character that doesn't have depth and doesn't develop, to me, isn't an interesting character at all. I like watching the character grow and mature as a person, and learn from what experiences they go through. A person that can roleplay a character like that successfully gets a big tick of approval in my book.

As for an RPG creator, again, I like the depth of the details in the story (no matter if it's a traditional RP, or a out-of-the-ordinary one). It makes it all the more magical and exciting to be a player in, and it brings about more options for the roleplayer to dip their character into.

Comments?

EDIT: Another question: How would one become a quality roleplayer?

I think a good role player (for Otaku) is someone who can take a flawed character, work out the kinks and make them a better person (As Redemption already put it) around the end of the story (If the RP lasts that long *scoffs*). I also think a good role player is someone who is active as well because let's face it, you can't develop your character if you're not there (here). Aside from that, a whole lot of effort on the part of the player, whether te RPer is good or bad, will only equal creativity in the long run.

From what I've read, I think what makes one a good role player is exploring areas with their character that they wouldn't encounter in real life. Not the setting per se but the emotions and experiences they would have. Because if on some level I am able to actually see them as if they were real, even if the writing isn't the best it's fun to read.
I also think a good role player is someone who is active as well because let's face it, you can't develop your character if you're not there (here). It's hard to even understand a character if you hardly see any posts from them.

Still in the end, if someone is putting forth good effort and at least trying to develop their character I find it interesting to read and for the most part in my short time here I've seen plenty of people who are good at role playing.

Now on the flip side, I've read some that put far too much into their character, making them so complex that you lose sight of what you are suppose to be connecting to. So I also think a good role player tries to balance things by not having dozens and dozens of aspects that they are trying to develop in just one character. Or rather within a very short time frame as it feels as if they are rushing things instead of being part of a story.
