Chapter One: Ghouls

Detective Paula McCarthy knelt down over the horrific scene that fell before her eyes. The young man lying in front of her, his clothes soaked to translucency by the driving rain, had been killed in a particularly brutal way. His blood was running down the drain, washed from the scene by the rain, and his chest had been clawed open, apparently by some kind of wild creature. The harsh lights the police had set up were flickering in the heavy downpour, and McCarthy's hair was plastered to her head, her trenchcoat soaked through.

"Detective?" asked a police officer from behind her, "The press have arrived. What do you want me to tell them?"

"Tell them there's been a murder, and that an official statement will be given soon. Don't give them any more than that, Frank," sighed McCarthy. She hated the press with a vengeance. They were always sticking their noses where it was most awkward for the police, making it impossible for them to do their work.

"Will do," replied the officer, hurrying away. McCarthy looked back at the body and sighed again, breathing deeply.

"What did this to you?" she asked the body.

"Something that its best you don't know anything about, McCarthy," came an English voice from behind her, and McCarthy whirled around. A man stood a few feet away from her, his dark hair dripping, plastered to his forehead. A dark canvas jacket covered a white t-shirt, and a pair of charcoal-grey jeans adorned his legs. His feet were in a pair of black Converse All-Stars, and the white tips poked out from underneath his hems. He wore a broad smile on his handsome face, his crystal-blue eyes beaming.

"Legion," McCarthy whispered, exasperatedly, rolling her eyes. Another unwanted nuisance.

"I know what did this, McCarthy, and I can stop it if you just let me take a look at the body," Legion said, "Please, McCarthy."

"Fine. You have five minutes," McCarthy said, stepping aside to let Legion through, and he passed her, saying cockily:

"More time than I need." He knelt down beside the body, as McCarthy had done, and saw the positioning of the scratch marks.

"Come on in, guys," Legion said, tapping a Bluetooth headset that was hooked into his ear, "We're good to go."

A group of people passed through the police cordon, four female, two male, various cases of equipment clutched in their hands.

"Whoah, Adam," said McCarthy, "What's this? I thought you always worked alone!"

"Times are changing, McCarthy. Everyone needs a team to help them out nowadays. Even me," he said, grinning that charming smile again.

"Fine," she said, shaking her head, "So, what did this?"

"A ghoul," replied Adam, not taking his eyes off the corpse in front of him, "A creature of the night, one that lives off human flesh. They can disguise themselves as human, but the disguise doesn't stand up to close scrutiny. My guess is this unfortunate fella got too close to comfort and the ghoul ripped him open."

"So if they survive off human flesh, why didn't this "ghoul" eat him?" asked one of the team, a young Oriental woman.

"They got interrupted, Yasuo."

"Interrupted?" said another woman, a cigarette hanging out of her mouth, "What do you mean, Adam?"

"Either someone saw them and they ran off, or a bigger, juicier prize happened to wander along, and they took off for something a little more filling. Either way, there's going to be another dead body soon enough, unless we stop this ghoul," said Adam.

"How do you kill a ghoul?" asked one of the young men on the team, "I've read about them, but I've never encountered one before."

"Not many people have. Not many living people, anyway. And as for your question, I don't know. I've never had to kill one before, so this is a first for all of us. We need to split into teams. We'll work quickest that way. Angelica, Shang, Nicolette, go take a look around the area. Try and find any kind of clues as to where this ghoul got to. Yasuo, Demtri, Ray, you need to head to the usual suspects, try and squeeze them for information. Try and find out how to kill a ghoul. We rendezvous at the Nexus in two hours. Now split!" shouted Adam, watching as the team separated into their two groups, and ran off in opposite directions.

"What are you going to do?" asked McCarthy, watching as Legion's new team set off in opposite directions from the scene of the crime.

"I need to go see Joe..."

Welcome to Legion. Sorry its taken a little while to get up (not a problem I have in other areas ;)) - you know your assignments, there is no posting order, so discuss amongst yourselves, preferably in the Underground or by PM, how you are going to go about your tasks.

The basic idea is that you've been working with Legion for a few weeks - you're getting to grips with his organisation, but you're still a little mystified by the man himself. Feel free to use your magic at any time, by the way.

Enjoy!
Demetri, accompanied by his new partners, Yasuo and Ray, walked out of the quarantined area, through the snap-happy paparazzi and intrigued onlookers and onto the street. The young man coughed a few times after breathing in a lung-full of carbon-dioxide and carbon-monoxide, and all those other nasties that came from a car?s exhaust. He had been in the country too long, and had forgotten how disgusting the pollution was in the city.

The young man turned to face the two young women who were his partners for the night. Adam, his new boss man, had sent his group out to gather information on how to kill a ghoul. Demetri had only recently just realised he had magical ?talents? before the strange advertisement came out, looking for people to join up at Adam?s paranormal agency. To the farm boy, it was a good chance to improve his ?talents?, because they were usually summoned in times of need, like the woman in white he had encountered a few months ago. That was his second experience with the paranormal, and it unsettled him greatly.

? Do either of you two have any ideas of where to start?? Demetri asked, not having the faintest clue of what to do first. For the short time the young man knew these two women, he could see certain resemblances between them. Both, to him, were tough, sharp-tongued, not seeming to care what others thought, and stubborn.

A farm boy? the daughter of a Japanese ambassador?and a cop? Demetri thought to himself as he waited for responses from either of the two. What a merry band of ?brothers? we make.

? A ghoul that eats human flesh? and that can disguise itself as a human?? the young Japanese woman muttered, half in serious thought, one of her gloved hands to her lips.

? I don?t suppose you have many contacts around this neighbourhood Ray?? Demetri asked, turning his attention to the young police officer.

Ray looked around for one of the street signs. They really hadn?t taken much notice of where they were heading when Adam gave the order to move out. Most of them (Demetri couldn?t vouch for all of them) were still in awe of Adam?s organisation and were excited to go out on their first assignment. But it seemed that luck was on their side tonight.

? Yeah, I do. And they?d probably know something about the whole ghoul thing. Let?s go,? Ray replied, her officer tone creeping into her voice, and set off at light sprint. Yasuo started after her, Demetri bringing up the rear.

On their way to wherever it was they were going, they passed through a park. The three of them slowed down to a walk, cautious about their surroundings. They all felt nervous about the dark shadows the trees and bushes cast over the yellow-green lawns. That ghoul could be hiding here, and they didn?t want to take the chance of getting caught by surprise by that thing.

As they were walking along, Demetri felt a slight tough on his long, dusty-coloured jeans. At first he thought it was just his pants getting caught on a twig, but it happened again, and then for a third time. He stopped and looked down at the ground to see a small creature of some sort looking up at him with emerald green eyes. The young man looked around, blinking, as if he was seeing things, then looked down at the creature again. It was still there, looking up at him. He sighed and shrugged, thinking he must be mental to be doing this, and knelt down to the creature.

It looked like it was a ? faerie? It was. There was no mistaking it. Translucent, green wings, a skirt made out of flower petals, and emerald green eyes. She looked like a tiny dancing figure from a small girl?s jewellery box.

? Er? hello?? Demetri greeted the faerie tentatively.

She looked up at him with an unamused expression. Demetri felt like he was being scolded by her. She fluttered up to his ear and whispered something into it. His blue-mauve eyes grew wide at what she told him.

? Really?? Demetri questioned, a little stunned by the information. The faerie nodded, now sitting on his shoulder.

? Hey Demetri!? Yasuo called from up ahead. Demetri stood up suddenly, almost making the faerie overbalance on his shoulder. He sprinted to join up with the two others, scratching the back of his head in an embarrassed way.

? Sorry? I?um?. had to tie up my shoelace?? Demetri blurted out the first excuse he could think of. The two young ladies looked at him with strange looks, unable to see the faerie that was on his shoulder, hanging on for dear life.

? Demetri, your shoes don?t have laces??

OOC: I'm sorry if this sucks. I have been busy with training. I wasn't expecting to study for a test every single night :(

"So, how are we supposed to find a flesh-eating ghoul?" Nicolette ran her fingers though her dark hair.

Angelica coughed slightly and dropped her cigarette to the ground. Squishing it beneath her sneaker, she began to walk in the opposite direction from where the ghoul was thought to have run off in. Nicolette gave Shang a look that suggested she was a bit irritated with Angelica's lack of communication. The humble Chinese man shrugged and followed.

"Shouldn't we be walking the other way, Angelica?" he questioned politely.

"You can if you want. But I don't think he completely left the scene."

Shang and Nicolette cocked their heads to the side but continued to follow the disgruntled Spaniard. Angelica glanced over her shoulder before stopping.

"He's a flesh-eater, and from the looks of that body, he's starving. He got interrupted while eating his claimed 'prize', if you will. Flesh-eating ghouls usually don't just leave their claims. They're afraid that another will try to take it away from them," Angelica scraped her fingernails against her scalp, "So, the fucker is hiding out somewhere, waiting for his opportunity to get his meal back. If he's very desperate for food, he'll be forced to attack."

"How do you know so much about creatures who feast off of the dead?" Shang asked.

A shadow passed over Nicolette's head, forcing Angelica's attention to deter elsewhere. She held out her hand to notion that she didn't want either of them to move. Slowly she crept towards the building the shadow seemed to disappear into. No windows were open, and there was no alleyway.

"What was it?" Nicolette whispered.

"Was it the ghoul?" Shang clenched his fist.

"No. It wasn't the ghoul, or I would've smelled death. It was a shadow. Probably just a bird or something, I didn't get a good look," Angelica sighed, her tense body relaxed, "In my old job, my partner and I were assigned to pretty much the disgusting and vile cases. Mostly dealing with necrophiliacs and other such filth. So, the smell of them becomes as natural to me as perfume."

"Gross." Both Nicolette and Shang agreed. Angelica nodded and continued to walk around, peeking into empty buildings and trash cans along the sidewalk.

"If you start to smell something that you wouldn't consider normal, then you're probably getting close to the ghoul. Or on his trail, at least. So keep your eyes and noses open," Angelica joked.

Ignoring Demetri's lame excuse, Ray and Yasuo continued to jog ahead with the young man just a few paces behind them. Ray ducked into an alleyway, jogging a little faster now they were out of general public view. Yasuo panted softly, really not used to all this physical work despite her lithe figure.

"Miss Ray...where is it we're going?" she wheezed, trying her best not to start lagging behind. She felt a crick in her shoulder and rolled it a few times, trying to work away the acid starting to build in her muscles.

"We?re not too far now, Yasuo. I know a man who's proven useful to Adam on a few other occasions."

Yasuo felt her heart pang with excitement, feeling so new and inexperienced compared to her other two team mates. They were older and probably far better wizards than she was, but she was going to try and not let that bother her.

She looked over her shoulder at Demetri who smiled encouragingly, his long hair blowing out behind him to show off his face properly. Yasuo grinned and blushed a little, turning around just in time see that Ray had stopped in her tracks.

"Just here," the policewoman said, her voice barely audible over her short puffs of breath. "There's a shop just around this corner. Let me go first, just in case he has any...other customers."

Yasuo and Demetri nodded, waiting for a few minutes while Ray went ahead, her shadow stretching into the alley as she opened a door to flood the area with a strange, wavering blue light.

"So..." Yasuo said finally, shuffling her feet awkwardly. Despite her confidence in groups, she never had been that good with talking to others privately.

Demetri looked up as if he was going to speak and Yasuo could have sworn she heard a giggle coming from his shoulder, but Ray reappeared. She stuck her head around the corner and jerked a thumb meaningfully toward the shop door.

"C'mon, we won't be interrupted."

The trio walked into a small shop, crowded with dream catchers, herbs and books that looked like they could easily have been antiques. A plump, sallow man stood behind the counter, a rolled cigarette stuck behind his ear. Yasuo would have said he was your perfectly normal, sleazy dealer, if it weren't for his eyes that were distinctly those of an insect. Round and pitch black, shimmering in the strange light that was coming from a large crystal orb further along the counter.

"This is Chuck," Ray began, the man waving pleasantly as his name was spoken, "He has some equipment that can trace paranormal activity and thinks he might have spotted something earlier."
"It's quite useful having somebody on board who knows so much about Ghouls, dear lady. Yet you are so young, it seems the hunters of the supernatural get younger and younger each day." Quan rambled, walking cautiously with his hands behind his back.

"I am young, but I've seen my share. Obviously not more than you, my good sir." Angelica responded back, keeping her eyes and nose open.

"Shang Quan, was it? What have your experiences been like?" Nicolette asked curiously. The tall chinese man, dressed today in a black suit avoided the question for a few seconds. Nicolette decided not to try and pry, but it was eventually answered in any case.

"Mostly demonic entities, an apparition here and there...things that are more intricate then they are given credit for. Very distinct however in many aspects, so I can tell you quite confidently that neither of which are responsible for any of the actions here. If we happen to find this ghoul, it will be quite an interesting experience." Quan explained.

The three came to a fork in the road, they seemed to round out from each other and overlook the point of the accident. Angelica reached out her face and seemed like she was trying to get a fix on a scent, nothing came to her however.

"I'm not getting anything...we should probably check just in case though. Then we can regroup back with the others. There's a good chance the ghoul could have escaped by another means that we can't follow." Angelica suggested.

"Wait, what do you mean...?" Nicolette inquired, only to have Quan's arm raised infront of her pointing to the right.

"Angelica, anything now?" Quan asked, as a gust of wind blew past the three of them, allowing her a to take in much more then she had been able to before. Nicolette reached her hand up and regained control of her hair as she watched the chinese man, a bit startled at first.

"Y...yeah, from the left path! It's extremely weak though, also I'm not entirely sure it's our typical ghoul...but it's worth checking out." Angelica said, taking a few steps toward the left direction.

"Wonder if the others have had any luck yet." Nicolette wondered aloud as she and Quan followed Angelica down the more narrow path on the left of the road.

"If anyone sees anything suspicious, don't hesitate to yell" Angelica said.

I hope the others are doing ok, thought Adam as he jogged up the steps of an old house and rapped smartly on the door with his knuckles, I'd hate for anything to go wrong so early on.

The door creaked open, and an elderly woman's face appeared in the crack, her eyes flickering nervously.

"Who is it?" she asked, her voice crackly, weak, "Who's there?"

"Its Adam," Legion replied, "Can you please let me in, Madame Francine?"

"Of course you can come in, Adam," the old lady replied, her tone changing and her face breaking into a thin smile, "You're always such a polite boy." She opened the door fully, and raised her arms, giving Adam a hug as he crossed the threshold.

"Would you like a cup of tea?" she asked sweetly as she closed the door, "I've just put a pot on."

"I would love to, Madame Francine, but I'm afraid its purely business today. I need to see Joe."

"Oh, well he's in the usual place, Adam," she replied, "You know where to find him. Just give me a call if you need anything."

"Thank you, Madame Francine," he said, and he ran up the stairs of the old house. Madame Francine had once been a psychic, the only real one in town. She had a limited amount of magical ability herself, and it seemed to appear in the form of slight clairvoyancy. She could see snippets of the future, but she could never quite piece together what they meant. Since then, though, she had grown old, and her clairvoyancy was beginning to fade. She only had occasional glimpses of the future now, and usually they were nothing helpful.

But Adam couldn't think about that now. He stepped into a dark, dusty little room, with a cupboard in the corner and a table with a single wooden chair in the centre. Closing his eyes and taking a deep breath, he walked over to the cupboard and opened the doors, taking out a small object under a thick black cloth. Placing it on the table, he breathed in deeply again, and removed the cloth.

Staring up at him from the oak table was a skull which looked similar to that of a cow, other than the fact that it had two long, curved horns like a fully-grown male goat protruding from the top of the head. Its two empty eye sockets seemed to bore right through him, and the mouth was set in a mocking kind of grin. Adam shivered, and clicked his fingers in front of the skull.

"Time to get up, Joe," he said, and all of a sudden the eye sockets were lit with what seemed like green candlelight, and an ethereal voice filled the room.

"What's going on? Who's there?" the voice asked, slightly bewildered.

"Its Adam," Legion said, "I need some information."

"Oh, that's all you ever come to me for, Adam. Information. You never want to see how old Joe is doing, no, its always a quest for knowledge with you. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother," replied the skull, somehwat sarcastically.

"Joe, I don't have time for this. I promise when all this is over I will come and visit you and we can just talk, ok? But for now I need to know the location of something."

"Go on then," sighed Joe. Joe was an ancient tracker spirit, most commonly associated with the element of earth, who had been trapped inside a demon's skull almost a century ago by a wizard who wished to use his talents. He had been passed down through the generations, and finally Madame Francine had come into possession of him. She showed me during a consultation many years ago, and ever since whenever I needed something tracking I had come to Joe.

"A ghoul. It killed at least one person earlier tonight, around 10:30 on the East Side of the city, and I need to find out where it is."

"A ghoul? Wow, you're really letting your new proteges in for a big one straight off the mark, aren't you, Adam? Let's see...ooh. You're going to like this one."

"Tell me."

"There's a nest of ghouls right in the city. Not just one, but almost two dozen of the things. You have a map?"

Adam nodded, and produced a large map of the city from the inside pocket of his jacket, and placed it down on the table in front of Joe, unfolding as he went. A tiny spark of energy flew from Joe's left eye, and landed on the paper of the map. Twenty-one tiny glowing lights appeared, centred around California State University. This was bad news. Lots of students, lots of fresh meat for the ghouls.

"I need to know something else," said Adam, folding the map up and placing it back in his pocket, "How can you kill a ghoul?"

"I'm not a spirit of knowledge, Adam. You'd be better off asking my brother about that kind of thing," said Joe. The spirit had a "brother" of sorts in Chicago, an air spirit named Bob who lived in a human skull, belonged to some other wizard.

"Fine. Sorry," said Adam, picking up the black cloth to place it back over Joe, when he heard a scream and a smash from downstairs. He leapt from his seat, smashing the door open and flung himself downstairs and into the kitchen.

He looked to the kitchen just in time to see a young Asian-looking man deliver a cruel slice to Madame Francine's abdomen with the elongated claws that protruded from his fingernails.

"No!" Adam shouted as the elderly psychic dropped to the floor in a spray of blood, and he ran towards the ghoul, seeing that his teeth were extremely elongated as well as his claws. Adam wriggled his wrist out of a small silver bracelet, and hurled it at the now-retreating ghoul. As soon as the silver made contact with the ghoul's flesh, it dropped to the floor, the metal acting almost the same as a taser would on a human being, knocking the ghoul unconscious. Adam had some horrible thoughts run through his head of what he'd like to do with the ghoul right now, but they were part of a baser part of his instinct, and he fought the images back, dropping to his knees beside Madame Francine.

Her eyes had completely whited out, the irises and the pupils gone, replaced by whiteness, and she was breathing in short, ragged gasps.

"When the day...is done..." she gasped, her voice seeming different now, deeper, "The only one the lonely...angel can stand by will be no more..."

"Madame Francine, please hang in there," Adam said, feeling a well of tears back up behind his eyes, "You're too strong to let this kill you."

"We all die...except one of us lives..."

Adam realised what was happening. Sometimes when clairvoyants were on the brink of death, they had extremely clear foresights of the future. Madame Francine was probably experiencing her ability more so than she had ever done in her life right now. But what did it mean?

"Goodbye, my angel..." she gasped, pressing her hand against Adam's cheek, and finally she slipped away, breathing her last breath and falling limp. Adam bowed his head, fighting back the tears. He needed to be strong right now.

He picked up the phone and called the ambulance through a haze of static, then ran upstairs and into Joe's room.

"What happened? What are you doing?" asked Joe.

"Madame Francine's dead. And you're coming with me," Adam said, his voice cold and filled with rage, as he picked up the skull and thrust it into a bag that hung on the knob of Joe's cupboard, swinging it over his shoulder and leaving the house.

He was going to find those ghouls and destroy them...

---

Alright, team, in your next post you need to get a call off Adam telling you to meet him at California State University, ready to fight the ghouls. Anyone who wishes to can initiate the fight. Have fun!
~ The saints, are comin?? the saints, are comin? I say no matter how I try, I realise it?s all a lie~

Demetri blinked for a moment before he realised his mobile phone was buzzing around in the back pocket of his long dusty jeans. He, Ray and Yasuo had been conversing about what Ray had discovered from her contact when the phone call abruptly interrupted. Demetri took it from his pocket and flipped it open.

? Demetri here,? he answered. Ray and Yasuo listened in on the young man?s part of the conversation.

? What?! Really? We?ll be right over.?

A click signalled the end of the call and Demetri placed it back into his jean pocket. He ran an exasperated hand through his long sandy brown hair. Where to go now?

? Who was it?? Ray asked firmly, reminding the young man that he hadn?t told them who called yet.

? Oh, it was Adam. Something fairly bad has happened and he wants us to go over to the California State University asap.?

Ray and Yasuo both felt like smacking him. However, they stayed their hands and just let a few grumbles escape their lips. Demetri noticed the colder demeanour towards him, now thinking that telling them it was Adam right away was probably a good idea.

Great? my first screw up? we?ve wasted time now?

The young man?s shoulders visibly sagged. However, the faerie on his shoulder whispered into his ear some comforting words. He nodded his thanks to her, feeling a little better, but still glum in some respects. It was good to have someone that was nice to him, even if he couldn?t decide if the faerie was his imagination or something real. The group moved back out onto the street and tried to flag down a taxi without much success. By now, the two young women were getting frustrated with the whole situation. Demetri couldn?t help but feel that it was his fault they couldn?t get to the University quickly.

Karma or somethin?? he thought to himself gloomily. He really was a novice.

In the end, Ray had to play her police-officer card (Demetri didn?t know if she still was a cop or not), and she commissioned a young man?s Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII, much to his disgust. The young police officer hopped into the driver?s seat, Yasuo in the front passenger?s seat and Demetri squeezing tightly into the back. With a loud roar of the exhaust tip and the high whistling of the twin turbo, Ray took off towards the University.

As they wove their way through the traffic-choked streets, Demetri felt the faerie on his shoulder tug on his ear gently. He turned to her, wondering what she wanted. She whispered into his ear yet again. This time, it was something about the ghouls and the University. Either she had heard what Adam said to him over the phone, or she knew exactly what his boss knew, which was quite creepy. Wait a moment, didn?t she say something about the ghoul before Adam even called? This revelation tripped Demetri out. How could have this faerie known something his boss didn?t?

However, Demetri didn?t have time to ponder over the question because Ray had brought the car to an abrupt stop outside of the University. It seemed the young man who had owned the car had done some custom work to the braking system, amongst other things. Ray and Yasuo jumped out; Demetri again squeezing out of the back seat behind them. How they ever expected to fit four people into those two-door cars was beyond his comprehension.

? I wonder if the others are here yet,? Ray queried, looking up at the dark building in front of them, green lawn greeting their feet.

? Should we take a look around?? Yasuo added. Demetri could sense the excitement in her voice. Like him, she also was new to this scene.

However, they all agreed on taking a look around the campus and started to head to the main building. Adam hadn?t given Demetri a location where they would meet up, if they would meet up at all. The young man had a sneaking suspicion that maybe this was one of Adam?s tests. Hopefully, it wouldn?t turn out like the last.
