Episode One--The Threat is Confirmed.

Tsunade paced in her office, Shizune looking worried and watching silently as she wrung her hands behind her. She tried not to look nervous, if only for Tsunade's sake, but it was becoming increasingly difficult as the tension in the air was near palpable.

"I have to tell them," the Hokage stated suddenly, her voice surprisngly soft and even. "Please ask all the Jounim to join me in the hall as fast as they possibly can. Let's figure out what we can do."

Shizune nodded and trotted out, dodging a young man as he came jogging up the stairs.

"Hokage-sama!" he wheezed, dropping down to one knee, "I've just had word from Sunagakure that the Kazekage, his siblings, and a few Jounin are on their way. They're the only warriors that are left."

Tsunade groaned and pinched the bridge of her nose, slumping down into her chair for a brief rest. She really needed to think, but there just wasn't any time. She had to hope her Jounin had more ideas than she did.

"Thank you. Please gather a group of spies and ANBU to scout the surrounding area. I want to know how far away those bastards from Shadow are."

The young man nodded, pressed his fists to the floor, and left quickly. Tsunade followed not long after, hoping to seek out Jiraiya before meeting with the Jounin. They were going to need all the help they could get.

And it begins. Jounin know what they have to do. Have a brief meeting with Tsunade where you basically decide that all ninja, no matter what their level, are going to be needed in a fight against the Shadow.

Chuunin/Genin, you guys are still pretty clueless about what's going on. Feel free to meet the Sand ninja, but don't have them tell anyone what's going on. I think Gaara has more tact. It's just your basic mingling/training for you guys. I want introductions, really.

Cyriel, you can just be arriving from Sand if you want or you can jump in during the next episode. This isn't going to be very long.

Also, I'm not going to wait for everyone to post if it takes too long. This first Episode will be 'open' for a few days, and then we're moving on. Mmkay?

Thanks, guys! Go forth and...er...ninja.

?Okay? let?s try this one more time, from the top??

?Come on, Kuro? if I don?t rest now, I?m going to exhaust my Chakra for two whole days!?

?Just one more time, Kaoru? I know you can do it this time.?

Kaoru sighed, pushing her long- brown hair behind her back and resting a little as she leaned on her knees for support. It had been four straight hours since the two friends trained in order for Kaoru to become familiar with the new technique she just learned, but it seemed as all of it had been useless, what with her messing everything up and not even getting one attack into Kuro?s zone. But, for some reason, Kuro kept pushing and pushing her, wanting her to become more in synch with her moves and become the best Shinobi she could ever be? to become a true warrior.

Realizing the serious determination in her friend?s eyes, Kaoru quickly stood up straight and stood in her battle position, now becoming true to herself and her oncoming move.

They waited and waited for a few minutes for a signal to begin the fight? waiting? until a leaf from a nearby tree slowly floated onto the ground.

?Butsuriteki Danmaku no Jutsu! Physical Barrage Technique!? Kuro finally yelled at the top of his lungs, then quickly charging towards Kaoru with his hand behind him, ready to grasp her face. Realizing exactly what he was about to do, Kaoru leaped backwards, doing continuous back-flips in order to dodge his grasp until she realized that a tree trunk was in their direction. Without having another thought on her plan, she does one last back-flip in order to bounce high off of the tree while Kuro had to resort to quickly slowing his pace before ramming into the tree- trunk.

While she was still in the air, Kaoru quickly grabbed the blue umbrella hanging by a sash on her hip and opened it, then throwing it into the air, causing it to float slowly towards Kuro. While landing onto the ground as the umbrella continued to float gracefully in the air, Kaoru made the usual ninjutsu sign with her hands as she focused her chakra into the her umbrella. Suddenly, the umbrella started spinning faster as Kaoru focused more and more on her concentration.

?Jouro Senbon!? she finally yelled, her eyes filled with faith. As the umbrella quickly moved closer to Kuro, sharp senbon needles started flying towards him, every needle locked onto his unique chakra. As the needles darted closer, instead of running away at first, Kuro faintly smiled and jumped out of the way of the needles until all of them were used up, the umbrella finally floating gracefully onto the ground.

As the two of them dusted themselves off and caught their breath, Kaoru jumped up and down in ecstasy, squealing in delight that she had finally gotten the hang of her new technique. ?Yayy! I did it!! I did it, Kuro- chan!? she cheered out loud as Kuro quickly ran towards her and picked her up in his arms, spinning her around as he laughed along with her.

?Yeah, awesome job!? he yelled, still spinning her around, ?See, I knew you could do it!?

Kaoru smiled and hugged her best friend tightly, happy that he was so proud of her achievement. It had been awhile since she had these ?feelings? for him, ever since they first met, but? there was also someone else on her mind? someone that always popped into her thoughts?

?Excuse me. Am I interrupting something important??

Both Kaoru and Kuro quickly turned their heads to see a slightly annoyed Nagata Ichiro leaning on a nearby tree on the training ground, his arms crossed and his eyes slightly narrowed. Kuro slowly put Kaoru down and scratched his head as the clumsy girl stuck her tounge at Ichiro and started walking towards him.

?Who said you could come visit me while I was training, hmm?? Kaoru teased.

?Well, if I remember correctly,? he implied sharply, ?you were the one who told me to come visit you today if you don?t remember.?

?Gosh, Ichiro? you?re always so stuck up. You need to just relax and take that stick out of your ass,? Kaoru teased as she lightly punched the short haired boy while he chuckled a little, slightly patting her on her head.

?So, what?s up, Nagata?? Kuro finally spoke, his hands on his hips with a serious expression on his face. He was a little annoyed at the way that the two were playing around with each other? they were a little too close.

Ichiro looked up at the annoyed friend and returned to his normal form of leaning on the tree while Kaoru lightly bounced towards Kuro and stood close to him. He coughed a little before roughly speaking in his mature voice, his eyes closed, then looking up at the two. ?I saw a few interesting fellows from the Land Hidden in the Sand wandering around in the village today.?

?Really?? Kaoru gasped a little, ?More of them? I wonder what happened.?

?Well? I actually don't know..? Kuro said, his right hand stroking his chin as he thought, ?but I'm guessing you want to find out, right??

Ichiro slightly nodded. ?Exactly. I see you guys finished your daily training, so why don't we go meet some of the new people??

?Alright! And maybe we?ll see some people we know, too!? Kaoru innocently added with a smile, the two boys slightly scoffing and rolling their eyes.

The three then started towards the main area of Konoha Village, wondering what other members from other villages were doing there.

~*~

OOC: There, I hope that's okay, Jamie. Also, I hope it's good with you, BK and Omega, as how I know you guys the most. :D

Just something so that everyone can meet up somewhere.

Temari and Kankuro should have already reached Konohagakure by now," Gaara said quietly, as he led the small group of shinobi through the trees of Hidden Leaf country.

"Gaara-sama, there are shinobi approaching," Zakuro said beside him. At the words, the others in their group looked around cautiously, and they began to pick up their speed. The girl's eyes were deep crimson, and kept a careful watch on the surroundings that they passed.

The Kazekage nodded, taking a quick glance back at the rest of the band, "We've been in Leaf territory for some time now. I'm surprised we weren't met sooner." His eyes were tired, dull from exhaustion and combat, and...grief. Zakuro knew his guilt weighed on him like an anchor - there wasn't a passing moment when her new lord wasn't thinking of their village, of Sunagakure...and his failure to keep it safe. She knew he was in pain, even though he never gave even a hint of it. Still, she didn't understand why they were here, in this land so green, the foliage masking the signs of destruction.

We should be in Sunagakure - we should defend it to the end. Our sands are there, our blood is there...and no doubt, our enemies will return, and then follow us to this place and destroy it as well.

Suddenly Zakuro was aware that the presences she had sensed earlier had drawn much closer, and she drew her whorled mask down to cover her face, as their small group continued to leap through the tree-tops. Hand lightly resting on a bone shuriken, she leapt in front of Gaara, who nodded in acknowledgement. They continued through the trees, Zakuro noting the position of each approaching foreign presence, and then silently passing the information along in the form of hand signals.

Out of no where, masked shinobi dropped from the leafy canopy above them, surrounding them. However, as soon as the strangers revealed themselves, the members of the Hidden Sand had already drawn their weapons, ready to attack if need be. Zakuro stood in front of the Kazekage, carefully shielding Gaara with her body. Her mask hid her features, but her garnet eyes darkened in an evident threat.

Her voice came out flat and calm, but her tone gave them fair warning "Identify yourselves."

One of the masked shinobi stepped forward, showing the insignia on his forehead protector, We are ANBU of Hidden Leaf. The Hokage-sama sent us to escort the rest of your group to Konohagakure. We passed Temari-sama and Kankuro-sama on our way here, and they directed us to your exact location."

Gaara touched her lightly on the shoulder, and Zakuro nodded in compliance. She gestured to some of the figures in the group, "We have injured with us, as well as a few children. Is it much farther to go?"

"No, we are quite close to the village. We will oversee you until there, where medical-nin are waiting," the ANBU member said, and then he and the others of his group disappeared into the treetops again.

Zakuro followed their paths for a moment, her hand never leaving the shuriken, and then Gaara touched her shoulder again. She pushed her mask up to rest on her pale hair again, and then began forward, the rest following. The vast gates of Konohagakure soon appeared, and as said, there were shinobi already waiting to receive them. Kankuro and Temari were also waiting, already surrounded by a large gaggle of curious youngsters. As they walked through the gates, Kankuro and Temari started speaking with Gaara and Zakuro, all agreeing to meet later on after Gaara had met with Tsunade-sama. He left to oversee the treatment of the wounded shinobi in their group, while Kankuro and Temari also went off to their own business.

An ANBU member approached her immediately as soon as she was alone on one of the streets, "Zakuro-sama, is there anything we can help you with?"

She was a bit surprised that they already knew of her, but didn't mention it, only saying, "No, thank you. I will only be making myself familiar with the lay-out of Konoha." Then the ANBU member was gone, and as she walked, a gaggle of whispering children began to follow her. It was a little odd, seeing how daily life seemed to progress normally here, as if war had not yet touched here yet. She could not help but think of the ashes and ruins that they had left in the desert.

So, this is Konoha...

The crashing of a chakra infused fist could be heard slamming to the ground as a tall jounin adorned in white robes leaped from his former position, and emerged behind his attacker. The short dark haired genin retaliated quick with a back elbow but it was blocked by the jounin and felt his legs fall out from under him as he was brought down from the chest at the same time by an open palm strike. The next sound was the body of the genin dissapearing as it hit the ground into a cloud of smoke.

"A clone?"

A scream from behind caught the shinobi by surprise as the genin charged forward with a spinning low roundhouse kick, which the jounin blocked just in time with his left hand without a single movement of his head, and tossed the genin back causing him to flip back to his feet.

"Very impressive, Ichiro. Your chakra channeling abilities make your clones near perfect. Though it will still be a while before you catch me off guard like that." Hyuga Neji said, slightly grinning with satisfaction.

"I'm getting closer, Neji-sensei. Even with your Byakugan." Ichiro said, returning the grin and bowing his head in respect.

"We're finished for today, Ichiro. You're welcomed to join us for tea however." Neji offered, as he started to clean up around the training grounds within the Hyuga residence.

"My apologies sensei, but I must meet with somebody. Next time." Ichiro declined respectfully.

"Hm, indeed. Take care Ichiro." Neji waved the genin off as he walked toward the large doorway leading outside. He tied his scarf back aroud his neck and straightened out his scabbard as he walked toward Mitsumi's house. It was still considerably early, but closer to lunch time then it was to breakfast. He knew Mitsumi would be up, and he hadn't gotten a chance to see her for a few days since she just returned from a mission. Everyone was still getting used to running missions with other ninjas beside from the ones that used to be in their cells, but in these times there were hardly enough dangerous missions to be concerned about teamwork not being as cohesive as possible. Not to mention, working together with fellow shinobi regardless of who they were was always a part of a ninja's training.

Ichiro leaped up to the tree nearest Mitsumi's house, using it as a step to launch himself up to her balcony. The sound of Ichiro's foot hitting the floor alerted Mitsumi's attention, as the redhead genin turned her head and ran toward the door with a smile on her face. She slid the door open and jumped into Ichiro's arms, wrapping her arms around him squeezing him almost as hard as she could.

"Ichiro!" she squealed, looking up at him.

"Hey! Not so hard!"

"Oh please, like you're that sensitive."

"Heh, well in any case. How did it go?" Ichiro asked, returning Mitsumi's hug at that point.

"Easy stuff, we got back late last night. It was a little awkward...that girl Midori was with us, she wasn't really all that talkative. Sakura-sensei seemed pretty confident in her though. We didn't really get much fighting time in though." Mitsumi explained, as she ran back into her room briefly to slip into her sandals. She ran back out and leaped clear off the balcony and down onto the streets. She looked up toward Ichiro and cracked a big smile on her face.

"Hey! Hurry up or I'm gonna eat without you!" Mitsumi yelled up in a teasing tone. Ichiro rolled his eyes and leaped down after her, and the two proceeded on to the ramen house. Ichiro and Mitsumi talked on the way and the whole time during lunch. She was the only person Ichiro felt completely comfortable around, so he was most sociable around her. Being in a cell together in the past was fortunate for them as well, even if it was a bit of a task getting along with Konpaku Oni.

As time passed, quite a commotion found it's way into the streets of Konoha as people began talking about seeing representatives from the Hidden Village of Sand in the forests of Konoha. Ichiro listened intently trying to put together what was happening, but couldn't manage to put together anything other then the kazekage himself was amongst the group.

The two genin finished up and left the shop as another genin came running upto them. Her snow colored hair trailed behind her in the slight breeze as she caught view of Mitsumi's red hair. Mai caught up with her, not realizing Ichiro's presence quite yet.

"Mitsumi...I..." Mai tried to speak, but after noticing Ichiro she froze up and turned her head, her cheeks redder then a tomato. Mitsumi looked a little confused at first, but turned her attention to Ichiro and put together why. Ichiro noticed Mai, and looked toward her a bit but eventually turned his head around, not wanting to give off any wrong ideas. Ichiro didn't really hold any grudge or animosity toward her, but everytime he tried to say something to her she'd run off.

"Mai, hey." Mitsumi said, trying to make Mai feel more comfortable. She then turned her attention to Ichiro. "Hey! Ichiro, I'm gonna hang out with Mai for a bit ok? I'll catch up with you later."

"It's fine. I have to meet up with Kaoru actually. She was bugging me yesterday to come see her today for some reason." Ichiro answered, still a bit confused as to why Kaoru wanted to speak with him. Mitsumi nodded at him, grabbed Mai's hand and ran off with her. Ichiro dashed off the other way and headed toward her house.

By the time Ichiro reached Kaoru's house, she seemed to be already coming to the end of her training routine with another genin. He recognized him, it was Hizen Kurosai...one of the twins. Ichiro didn't know much about either of them, but held nothing against them either. Ichiro leaped down and watched the rest before interrupting.

?Well, if I remember correctly,? he implied sharply, ?you were the one who told me to come visit you today if you don?t remember.?

?So, what?s up, Nagata?? Kuro finally spoke, his hands on his hips with a serious expression on his face. He was a little annoyed at the way that the two were playing around with each other? they were a little too close.

Ichiro looked up at the annoyed friend and returned to his normal form of leaning on the tree while Kaoru lightly bounced towards Kuro and stood close to him. He coughed a little before roughly speaking in his mature voice, his eyes closed, then looking up at the two. ?I saw a few interesting fellows from the Land Hidden in the Sand wandering around in the village today.?

?Alright! And maybe we?ll see some people we know, too!? Kaoru innocently added with a smile, the two boys slightly scoffing and rolling their eyes.

The three then started towards the main area of Konoha Village, wondering what other members from other villages were doing there.

The three genin stopped atop a rooftop and looked down toward the entrance, so far only seeing the usual crowds. Kaoru stepped a little closer to see better but her foot slipped causing her to lose her balance and eventually fall forward toward the edge of the roof.

"Wh..whoa!" she yelped as she fell part way, only to be grabbed by Ichiro. He pulled her back in with ease with one arm, as Kaoru blushed a great deal and turned her head away quickly.

"T...thank you, Ichiro. I'm such a clutz!" she said, adding in a squeaky tone at the end of her sentence. Kuro watched on with a rather unimpressed look, but quickly turned his attention back down to the entrance to the village.

'Sand ninjas...we ARE allies, so I don't think it's to cause any trouble. Something big might be happening though. If that's so, things might start to heat up around here.' Ichiro thought to himself rather seriously.

The sun was clear in the sky, even if it was being broken into slivered streams by the clusters of leaves that hung from the trees with a lush green color that reflected only a small fraction og natures true beauty. The forest birds chirped and made there different sounds, the creatures on the forest floor scurried and ran about, all trying to survive to the next day. To support there children and themselves, nothing interrupted this cycle this day. The only odd sound was the unsettiling rattle that echoed through the empty forest. The rattle that followed Oni everywhere, it was the only sound he could trust, and yet be betrayed by at the same time.

Oni had his hands in his pockets, his face was forward and his lone eye was set forward. Not staring harshly but sort of relaxing to take in the full view of the beauty and magnificance around him that welcomed him with open arms. He treaded softly and slowly through the forest, letting the silence melt into his very core and absorb him. He stopped dead and pulled his hands from his pockets, stretching out his arms and closing his eye and pointing his face to the sky. In that instant, that very moment, a small smile cresed his face. Barely extending the corners out, but enough to be noticable on Oni's face.

He was soon interrupted by the very faint noise of a twig snapping, with that sound Oni instanstly disappeared and remained dead still and silent as he watched carfully with his single, all seeing eye. He noticed a figure, a barely discernable image that vanished the second it was seen. Oni reached up with his right arm and grabbed his chain, letting the rattle that emminated from it echo loudly. Right away, the figure lunged for him, seeming to come from all sides. Oni quickly evaporated from his position and tugged at his chain. Releasing it from the wrapping aorund his body and letting it extended fully. He swung it effectively and swiftly, not letting the sheer length hinder his skills.

The weight of his chain snagged one of the figures and locked around it. Oni then swung the chain around him in a full circle, making it spin fast enough to provide a sort of shield from outside attack. The figure wrapped in the chain soon vanished in a puff of smoke, this gave the distinct look of a clone jutsu. Oni quickly reeled in his chain and made the dragon head release, he then slowly began to rotate his chain to his side as he looked around for anymore images that would assult him. His eye was focused and searching every corner and inch of the forest laid before him for any unnatural movement.

At the last moment, he saw a glimpse of moment when he was then assult from every side at once. Several images attacking at once with full force, Oni swung the chain with a ferocity that showed only a small bit of his true animal nature. Eliminating several clones, but not enough, he was quickly overwhelmed and was forced to use his trade mark jutsu. He quickly signed with his hands and growled under the weight of the clones.

"Astral Walk Jutsu!" And in a moments time, he was gone, the pile falling flat on there faces and then standing quickly, all of them searching furiously to find the escaped Chuunin. The rattling from Oni's chain echoed around the clones that readied themselves to finish this youngster off. Oni watched from his astral plain, looking for the oppurtune moment to strike and to eliminate more clones. He waited patiently, while continusly moving to continue the errie noise of his chain. After a few moments he spotted his moment and lunged for it.

Leaping from one of the trees, holding several kunia and shurkiens in his hands and unleashing them in swift, fluid motions then sent them raining down on several clones. He then brought his chain up and threw the dragon head into one clone and let the jaws clamp down on the clones chest and yanked the dragon head back as the clone vanished. He landed in the middle of the rest of the clones and swung his chain once more in a full circle, taknig out knees forcing the clones ot the ground. He was about to smash one clone in the head with the spike when a kunai came up to his throat.

Oni lowered his arms and let his chain dangle as he relaxed his muscles and stood up straight with his head held high. He felt the point of the kunai start to pull him towards his assaliant. He willing turned with the weapon and looked into the face of the Jounin that was obviously better and more skilled then he was. He saw the clear face of the Jounin Neji-sensei, and the kunai that was held firmly in his hand. Neji withdrew his kunai and Oni bowed his head with a fist in a open hand held out in front of him. Neji bowed his head to Oni.

"You really are worthy of the title Chunnin Konpaku Oni. Even considering your rather young age." Oni bowed once more and brought himself back up straight.

"You flatter me Neji sensi. I just practice like I am suppose to, no better then anyone else." Neji let out a chuckle as Oni kept his eye focused on Neji.

"Modest until the end. That is enough training for today, I must be going. I have an important meeting to attend. Don't get into any trouble Oni." Oni nodded his head and Neji vanished into thin air, Oni picked up his chain and wrapped it around himself once more before vanishing himself. He contiuned throught forest, enjoying the silence and tranquility as he neared the village. Oni figured if there was an important metting, that must mean something interesting was going on. He would find out in due time, but, until then, he should see how his former cell mates were.

He soon entered the village, jumping from rooftops to rooftops seeing what was happening in the village that would cause so much excitment. He stopped on top of a building and look in the streets as he saw people the the Sand village walking around, looking like refugees. Oni could tell that was the case, he wasn't sure why they would be here. But they were here for a reason, and only time would tell. Not far from his postion, he saw three genin standing on a building furhter off.

He knew two of them, Ichiro his cell mate who always tried to buddy up to him. He didn't mind it, he just didn't want to treat him any differently then anyone else. The other was Kuro, an associate he had worked with several times. Him and his brother. Oni watched as he tried to figure out who the girl was in there little group, but gave up soon when he decided he would just go to them. Oni disappeared and reappeared on the building they were, standing behind them as he looked over there shoulders.

"Interesting view we have here, isn't it." Oni said blantanly and in his dead tone as he continued to look over the edge as they looked up at him with a surpised look.

Imi watched as Sasuke walked back toward the village, his hand raised briefly as one final goodbye. She pouted and plopped herself back down on a rotting treestump, ignoring the slight pain she inflicted on herself from the childish action. Great. Now she was bored and alone, with no one to train with.

She half wished she had the guts to go and talk to that Batou Gin guy, two years her senior and a very talented Chuunin. At least, that's what she'd been told. Ginmaru couldn't stand him either, which in Imi's opinion was a plus.

She knew the taijutsu expert trained not far from where she was sitting, and could even hear periodic yells as he smashed something large and heavy. She sighed and fell backward off the stump, landing with her legs draped over the dead pant and her shoulders pressed hard against the dry, crisp grass.

It was a nice day at least, so she could stare at the clouds for a while before boredom took hold again. She fanned her arms out by her sides, smiling at the feel of grass through the mesh on her right arm and the tickling of it directly against her bare left arm. Suddenly, the redhead was glad to be alone, enjoying the soft sounds of summer and the smells it brought as well.

Sitting up again, she double-checked to see that no one was around. Satisfied she was truely alone, she pulled her solid metal nunchaku out of a small backpack. Sasuke-sensei told her it was rediculous that she forced herself into using them when she could barely even lift them properly, but Imi persisted and always told him it was to make herself a more powerful ninja. He couldn't say anything to stop her even if he tried, and Ginmaru's chiding only managed to spur her on.

Twirling the nunchaku around with some difficulty, she dashed toward a tree standing out a little from the rest and brought the weapon forward with crushing force, watching happily as the wood split and buckled slightly from the attack. Pulling her arm back and flicking it slightly, she twirled the weapon above her head before bringing it down again, repeating the motion until she was gasping for breath.

Imi let herself topple back onto the grass and looked up at the battered tree, feeling a satisfied ache in her muscles from all the hard work. Granted, someone like Batou Gin could use that heavy weapon for hours on end, but Imi thought that she was making progress and that was all that mattered.

She picked herself up and packed her equipment away, settling under the shade of the tree for a well deserved nap. She never had been very good at staying alert, and completely failed to notice the footsteps of someone coming through the forest.

OOC Anyone fancy meeting Imi? I don't mind who it is ^_^

The birds fluttered up in the sky, their feathers catching the updrafts of air from the heat of the ramen shacks down in Kohona. They whistled and tweeted and trilled a beautiful song, almost celebrating the near perfect day of summer. The leaves that where Kohona?s namesake fluttered in the wind, a few tearing off and drifting and floating away.

Suigintou smiled at the sight and yawned, reaching into his pocket and withdrawing a wooden container that held roughly 78 toothpicks, and withdrew one. Slowly and almost hesitantly, he placed it between his lips and suckled on it. The cinnamon oil that the toothpicks had been boiled flooded into his mouth as he sighed.

?Things are so borin? around here anymore?I think Ginmaru is off on some skirtchasin? mission or sommat. Dunno. I wish some sort of action would happen?? Sighing again, Suigintou brough his hand up through his hair, stroking it back and then pushing it back down. The garnet that was set in his ornately designed ring caught his eye, and Suigintou caught himself staring into it?s swirling depths, entranced.

?This is my birthright?this ring is my family heirloom. It makes me proud to wear it.? The birds had settled on a branch by now, pecking lazily at the branches to try and coax out any delicious meals hiding in the hollow sections of the wood. Suigintou smiled to himself again and decided to do nothing more than flop down in the grass. Technically, he was on patrol duty, but there wasn?t exactly much to see.

The sounds of training alerted him to something, at least. He stood up and brushed off his legs, yawning and chewing on the toothpick. Whatever it was, it was probably just Gin Batou training. Was there a time that he wasn?t training? Suigintou shrugged his head and looked around. Gin Batou always did the same thing. There wasn?t anything to watch there.

He sat back down and played with the grass, even leaning over onto his stomach and kick his legs back against the tree?s bark softly as Suigintou stroked through the lush grass with his fingertips, enjoying the gentle stroke and caress it gave him back. While he wasn?t the type to jump up and hug a tree to save it, Suigintou did indeed love nature.

As the sounds of Gin Batou?s training faded away, another, more sporadic training noise took over. The grunts and thrusts and heaves that sounded like someone using a weapon that they weren?t ready for yet, but trying anyway. Suigintou smiled to himself and stood up, wanting to see who it was. He walked slowly and without care, and by the time he?d arrived, the trainer was curled up underneath a tree.

Suigintou recognized it as one of Ginmaru?s old cell-mates, Imi something. Shrugging, he approached her and kneeled down in front of her face.

?Napping on th? job, Imi??

Sweat dripped in small droplets down Midori's face. She was trying so hard to bring the fish on the scroll in front of her back to life. "Come on Midori! You can do this!" Frustrated and tired, Midori punched the table and grunted out her displeasure. "Unhh! Why am I so darn dim-witted? It's insufferable! I can't even do a simple healing technique. What use am I to my teammates if I can't even do the simple techniques?"

"Midori, how many times must I tell you not to berate yourself so?" Sakura said while striding across the room towards Midori.

Midori immediately lowered her eyes and tilted her head down towards the floor as a form of respect to her teacher and as a sign that she knew she was about to be scolded by her as well. "I'm sorry Sakura sensei. I just get frustrated very easily because I really do try my hardest to do exactly what you say, but over and over again I constantly seem to fail you and my teammates."

"Midori you are doing nothing of the sort. If anything, every time you think negatively and berate yourself, like I just heard you doing, then first and foremost you are failing yourself. And yes this does ultimately effect your teammates as well, but the solution and the problem both first lie within you." Sakura curved her index finger on her right hand and slipped it under Midori's chin lifting her face up to her level so she could look directly into her beautiful violet eyes. Midori looked so depressed that Sakura thought the girl was going to start crying any minute. "Look Midori there is a simple solution to this. Just think positively! If you have a problem or need help with something don't be afraid to ask someone. You can't always do everything on your own no matter how much you try or want to. I know you have social problems and that people generally steer clear of you and you of them, but thats just wrong! Not everyone is full of hatred or stupid enough to be so childish to continue to call you names. If you tried as hard to make a friend as you do to impress me and the other sensei's, I'm sure you will see big changes in your training."

"I know your right Sakura sensei. I promise I'll try harder." "...And" Sakura chimed in. Rolling her eyes Midori added,"And I promise I'll try harder at everything, even with friends and socializing." Smiling Sakura said,"Good. That's my girl. Ok, now let me show you this technique again."

The door to the room burst open with a loud bang, frightening Midori and Sakura that they jumped back behind the table ready to attack at any moment. Standing in the doorway bent over at the waist huffing and puffing was Shizune. "Sakura...I...I finally...found you." Sakura and Midori ran over to Shizune to help her. "Shizune what is it?" Sakura said. "Tsunade-sama has just called an emergency Jounin meeting right away in her office. Your needed there now." "OK, I'm on my way. I'm sorry Midori we'll have to continue this later." "No problem sensei. I think I'll go take a break anyway." Midori said. Sakura and Shizune left the room and headed for Tsunade's office two floors up.

Midori grabed her towel from the chair and wiped the leftover remenants of sweat from her face. She walked out the door and turned to find three odd people she had never seen before walking down the hall towards Tsunade's office, but she did notice that all three had the village of the sand headbands. (The three people are Garaa, Temari, and Kankuro) "Something weird is deffinetely going on. I wonder what it is." Midori thought to herself. She shrugged and started to walk toward the stairs while her mind was still occupied by the emergency meeting. All of a sudden Midori lost her balance, but briefly got a glimpse of bright yellow hair before she fell to the floor. "I'm so sorry Midori. Are you alright?" Midori reached up to grab the hand that was held out to her and glanced up to see that it was Naruto who was holding out his hand. She immediately began to blush and turn bright red while she was pulled up onto her feet. "Naruto sensei!" Naruto put on his big grin and scratched the back of his head, "Yeah sorry about that Midori. I'm just really in a rush right now. I don't want to be the last one to Tsunade's office again or she's going to kill me for always being late, he he he. Well see you later." Before Midori even got to say anything Naruto took off down the hall. She let out the huge breath on a sigh that she didn't even realize she was holding in that whole time. She thought to herself, "Naruto sensei is soooo cute! And he even likes me enough to spend time laughing and talking with me!" She sighed again. "Well I can't stand around here dreaming all day can I?" Humming to herself she left the building. When she got outside she overheard a lot of people talking about all the commotion of sand ninja coming into the village at the front gate. Hearing this Midori remembered the three sand ninja she saw walking towards Tsunade's office. "I better go to the gates of the village and find out for myself what's going on."

Midori jumped on the rooftops from house to house because the streets were getting crowded with all the excitement going on and new that this was the fastest way to get to the front. Coming up on the front she saw Ichiro, Kuro, Kauro, and Oni standing on a rooftop watching the action. She thought to herself, "Well Sakura sensei told me to start talking and making friends and I told her I would try, and I never break my promises, so here goes nothing." Midori landed on the rooftop behind them. "Hey guys. So does anybody know what the deal is with all these sand ninja and do you think it has anything to do with the emergency Jounin meeting Tsunade called?"
The woods were quiet. Sakura-sensei signaled to the two younger girls to spread out in a fan-formation. Each moved through the leafy growth of the trees with skilled silence. They were hunting someone ? someone that had been causing the nearby farming communities some grief. Mitsumi?s flaming red hair was hidden in her ninja garb. It would have been like a beacon of light if she had left it out. Her clear ocean-blue eyes scanned the growing darkness. The sun had set on their mission, and they had still yet to find their target.

To her left was Sakura-sensei. Her green eyes looked keenly at her surroundings. Mitsumi felt honoured at having her led the team she was in. It was a great opportunity for the young Genin to grow and mature, if only she would take it.

To her right was one of her Genin comrades, Midori. Like her, Midori was also a Genjutsu user, with some Water ninjutsu to add to her dexterity. She was a quiet girl at best, so the communication between the team members were lacking.

A sudden rustle caused Mitsumi to freeze. She could hear voices from down below. Sakura-sensei halted them, making hand signals to communicate with the two Genins. The two younger girls nodded and made their moves around to surround the voices below them. Sakura-sensei was the most proficient in ninjutsu and taijutsu, so she had decided that it would be best to use the other two as back-up.

Manoeuvring into place, Mitsumi looked down to see whom the voices belonged to. To her surprise, the ninja team had stumbled onto their target. He seemed to be organising a group of rogues to raid a nearby farmhouse for food and supplies. The young, red-haired girl felt a burning rage appear in her stomach as she listened to the man incriminate himself underneath them. Her necklaces slightly jingled as she moved into a better position.

Sakura-sensei made the signal. Midori performed her Kirigakure no Jutsu to create cover for Sakura-sensei. Mitsumi closed her eyes, performing a sequence of hand seals to summon her Kokuangyo no Jutsu to bind their target so Sakura-sensei could get him easily without much trouble.

Mitsumi concentrated to keep the jutsu going, all the while listening in to the commotion down below. Once the mist of Midori?s technique came in, the group started to get suspicious. However, the quick execution of the team?s battle strategy succeeded in hiding the abduction of their leader to the rest of the group. Sakura-sensei was down there and back in but a few moments. Midori tapped Mitsumi on the shoulder, releasing the jutsu. Mitsumi turned to their leader to see the man firmly bound and gagged. A relieved smile crossed her face.

===============================================

The next day, Mitsumi had barely gotten herself dressed in her normal civilian clothes when she heard a slight thump outside on her balcony. She had returned to Konoha in the early hours of the morning and proceeded to sleep in late. A huge smile spread across her face as she whirled around to see Ichiro standing there, looking a little ruffled.

She slid the door open and launched into his arms in a huge hug.

" Ichiro!" she squealed, now looking up at his sharp but boyish face.

" Hey! Not so hard!" Ichiro replied, feeling the wind being knocked out of him.

" Oh please, like you're that sensitive," Mitsumi replied, sarcasm oozing from her voice.

" Heh, well in any case. How did it go?" the young man asked, returning the hug gently. Mitsumi knew if he did it any harder, he would squeeze the life from her.

Mitsumi shrugged. "Easy stuff, we got back late last night. It was a little awkward...that girl Midori was with us. She wasn't really all that talkative, so it was hard for us to communicate. Sakura-sensei seemed pretty confident in her though. We didn't really get much fighting time in though. It was all over really quickly,? the young girl explained as she ran back into her room, slipping on her sandals before going out to the balcony again, shutting the door behind her.

To Ichiro?s surprise, Mitsumi leapt down from her balcony onto the dirt road. A big mischievous grin was on her lips as she looked back up at him.

"Hey! Hurry up or I'm gonna eat without you!"

She could see the young man roll his eyes and leap down to her easily. They turned and headed towards the main part of town, to their local hangout ? the ramen house. The two talked all the way there. It was kind of strange for both of them. Neither were the talkative type, but with each other, they didn?t seem to draw breath.

Once at the ramen house, Mitsumi and Ichiro sat down at their usual seat and ordered. Mitsumi, feeling particularly hungry, ordered a large bowl of chashu ramen, while Ichiro ordered the shoyu ramen. They continued their conversation, waiting for their ramen to be cooked. Ichiro was talking about his training with Neji-sensei. Mitsumi found it intriguing at how a taijutsu-based ninja trained. It was had always been a fascination of hers, because her taijutsu was never that strong.

Their ramen was brought out to them. Mitsumi tucked in and ate ravenously. She could sense Ichiro was staring at her in disbelief. He didn?t realise how much food this small girl could consume when she was hungry.

As they finished, Ichiro asked Mitsumi if she knew that Hidden Sand ninjas had been seen around Konoha lately. Mitsumi shook her head. She had been out on that mission for about three days, so any recent news was new to her.

They left the shop and proceeded to walk down the centre street of Konoha. People were bustling everywhere. Stalls of fruit and vegetables were open, people buying and selling goods of their own craft, even a few weapon stalls had been opened up. Mitsumi was about to approach one of the stall owners about a set of senbon when she noticed Mai run up her in a puff.

? Mai?? Mitsumi asked, blinking in a confused manner.

" Mitsumi...I..." Mai started but stopped mid-sentence when the snow-haired girl noticed Ichiro standing to Mitsumi?s side. Mitsumi noticed her friend?s cheeks blush before she turned away. For a moment, the red-haired girl looked a little confused, but then put two and two together. Mai had always been like this around Ichiro, ever since she had known her. It was hard not to giggle in moments like these, but Mitsumi tried her best and hid it well. Seeing a ?help me? flag pop up from Mai, Mitsumi turned to Ichiro with a warm smile.

" Hey, Ichiro. I'm gonna hang out with Mai for a bit ok? I'll catch up with you later,? Mitsumi proposed, trying to make Mai feel a little less uncomfortable.

" It's fine. I have to meet up with Kaoru actually. She was bugging me yesterday to come see her today for some reason,? Ichiro responded. Mitsumi wondered why Kaoru wanted to see him. But she nodded, grabbed Mai?s hand and ran off towards a less crowded spot in the marketplace. Soon, she had lost sight of Ichiro, and hopefully, he lost sight of her too.

The two girls now leant against a wall, panting slightly. They had run a fair ay. The marketplace seemed to be packed today. Mitsumi wondered if it was because of those Sand ninja. However, she turned to her friend, a comforting smile on her face.

? So? what?s up??

"I'm sorry!" Mai muttered almost immediately in response to Mitsumi's question. The redhead was caught off guard for a moment, but quickly let out a giggle before smiling wide at her shy friend.

"Don't worry about it!"

"I didn't mean to interrupt you two. I-I didn't even see him, so I thought you wouldn't mind talking--" she continued rambling apologetically, unable to look Mitsumi in the eye and instead staring down at her feet.

"Mai!" Mitsumi interrupted, letting out another quick laugh. No matter how well she knew Mai, the genin's shyness, even towards her own friends, was somewhat startling. "I told you, it's okay," she reassured, patting Mai gently on the shoulder, "So, what'd you want talk to me about?"

"Well..." she began, finally managing to pull her eyes up from the ground and look towards Mitsumi, "Suri-sensei said that me and the other team five genin wouldn't be doing anything for the next couple of days, so I wanted to know if you'd like to go see the Sand ninja arrive with me..."

"A lot of people are going to be there, you know."

"Yeah. I was going to ask Kaoru, too, but she told me she was going with Ichiro and I didn't really want to bother him..." she trailed off, poking her two index fingers together. Due to Mai's usual timidness, her fear of Ichiro in particular generally went unnoticed, but Mitsumi had noticed it a lot more recently and decided it wouldn't hurt to ask.

"You don't seem to like him much. Did he bully you or something? I could beat him up for you, you know."

Despite her joke, Mai remained silent. She knew Mitsumi and Ichiro were close friends, and if she revealed why she didn't want to be left alone with him, she was afraid she would be angry with her, just like she had convinced herself that Ichiro was. Noticing Mai's sudden tense look, Mitsumi felt it best not to press her much further, and changed the subject quickly.

"Hey, do you know anyone from Sunagakure?" she asked with genuine curiousity. Mai shook her head no, but admitted that she'd always wanted to meet someone not from Konoha under more pleasant circumstances than on missions. "Well then, we'd better hurry. We want to beat the crowd, right?"
Kuro looked over to the owner of the voice, startled only for a second by the consecutive new presences inhabiting the rooftop along with him, Ichiro, and Kaoru. He recognized them both: Kanpaku Oni, a Chunnin that would occasionally perform missions with Shiro and Kuro. The second was Kobayashi Midori, a member of his Genin cell. She was rather quiet most of the time, but when Kuro talked with her, she seemed nice for the most part. He smiled to her and addressed her first.

?Hey Midori-san! I?m not to sure why the Suna-nin are here? But it?s most definitely got something to do with Jounin's meeting.? She nodded at him, and then Kuro switched his attention to the Chunnin.

?Howdy Oni-chan! What brings you out here with us Genin?? Oni growled, bearing his teeth. Ever since Kuro had me him, he had known Oni to be an extremely serious person; and thus, he absolutely hated nicknames. Kuro made it a habit, therefore to throw on cute suffixes to his name, just to upset him. Surprisingly, this has helped build their friendship much more than it has given Oni a reason to want to kill Kuro.

?Same as the rest of you. Just wondering what?s going?. It?s not as if Suna-nin are uncommon any more, but this many, in this amount of time?? Kuro and Ichiro had been thinking the same themselves. Kuro looked over to Ichiro, and decided, despite his slight uneasiness with the Genin, he could not just ignore him, especially not if they were on the same page.

?It?s most definitely not hostile. Doesn?t look much like a peacetime meeting or anything of that sorts? These Sand ninjas look worn down, battered, like they?d suffered from something?? Ichiro picked up where Kuro finished.

?But what could that have been? This is a time of peace. None of the nations are at war, and it?s unlikely that the highly trained Suna-nin could have been expelled from their home by a demon or creature?? Ichiro lapsed and feel into silence. Oni shrugged and leaned against the chimmeny on the rooftop.

?Doesn?t do much to speculate, eh? We?ll find out soon enough, and if it?s a threat, we?ll just have to take care of it.? All the Genin looked towards Oni, and each with the same expression; one of understanding, one of fear, one of anticipation, but most assuredly, one of resolve. They would be able to take on any issue that came their way. The moment was broken, however, by a sound from behind. All the young ninja?s readied themselves, save Kuro, who merely laughed. White hair poked up from below the roof, and Kuro walked over to assist it?s owner.

?You?re an idiot, brother!? Shiro?s arm grasped Kuro?s and the two fell over atop the roof as Kuro assisted him up. Ichiro and Oni sighed, whereas Kaoru giggled shamelessly and Midori smiled. Shiro grinned sheepishly with Kuro?s face; though not hard to tell apart due to the contrast of physical appearance [i.e. the white and black eyes and hair color and eyes], their facial expressions were mirror image. As Shiro walked over to the others, Kuro?s mind traveled; he liked the company he was in, but he found himself wishing Mai was here, and wondering what she was up to. It was then that she saw Mitsumi-san and Mai running up through the crowd below. He smiled widely and turned to the others.

?Hey, guys, I?ll be right back, okay?? He didn?t wait for a response as he back-flipped of off the roof, landing softly behind Mai. He crept up on her, and put his hands over her eyes really quickly.

?Guess w--? He didn?t have time to finish his playful banter, because Mai used her Body Replacement Technique to appear over him and hit him in the head. Kuro crippled to the ground and stared at the sky as Mai bent over, muttering apologies at him a mile a minute.

?Imsosorryididntmeanto--? Kuro smiled up at her and stopped her mid-sentence.

?So how are you two today? Ey Mitsumi-san, Mai-chan??

The sun's light fell in golden stains around the clearing, breaking through the dense leaves of Konoha's famous forests. Ginmaru stood in the center, scarred chest bared to the cool brush of the wind and wooden sword held loosely in one hand. Laying at the base of a tree was his shirt and trenchcoat, and atop that his sheathed sword.

The wind flared and hair whipped across his shoulders. Slowly, as he felt a lull in the breeze, he lifted his clenched fist and suddenly opened it, flicking five leaves into the air. His eyes snapped open and instantly his wooden sword was at the ready, a current of chakra flaring around it. Muscles flexed and he shifted back, forward, circling quickly and always on the balls of his feet.

As suddenly as it began, his dance ended, and he stood just as solemnly as before, wooden sword drooping again. All five leaves gently floated to the ground, each split evenly across the central vein. Ginmaru's lips twisted into a thin smile, and he let the fine blade of chakra fade from around his sword's edge.

It was the 30th time that morning he'd engaged in the exercise, honing not only his aim and timing, but also the fineness of his chakra control. Forming a perfect blade on a wooden sword was harder than a metal one, which already had the edge. This required craftsmanship. Focus. Creation, not amplification. And so half-leaves lay scattered around him in a show of skill, crinkling under his footsteps when he relaxed - and only when he relaxed; a shinobi did not make a sound when they didn't want to.

Feeling weariness settle into his bones, he decided that it was enough for one day; the practice, coupled with intermittent kata, had left him already tired. Unlike, say, the great Uzumaki Naruto, his strong suit had never been raw stamina, he reflected as he lifted his sword from its resting place, sliding the laquered wood again into its place at his waist. Then again, as a Zensei, he wasn't supposed to necessarily need it.

The mesh of his shirt clung to his sweaty skin when he pulled it on, but he payed no heed, simply drew up his mask and threw his trenchcoat across his shoulders. A flicker of movement and he vanished from the clearing, off to bigger and better things.

Things, which it turned out, involved his pathetic little Genin teammate Kagami. And, oddly enough, Suigintou.

"Well, well, well," he said smoothly, strolling up casually as if he hadn't just been exerting himself. Behind his mask, his lips wrinkled into a cold grin, reflected in his eyes. "If it isn't little Imi. How goes the training, Kagami? Able to lift your weapon yet?"

Episode Two--Foreward, Together.

The Jounin stood assembled before the village, the Hokage in front of them to address everyone from her high perch looking down onto a courtyard. The Genin had all managed to, as was expected, push their way to the front of the crowd, or were otherwise gathered on roofs and telegraph poles. Many of the Chuunin slouched against walls, seemingly unfazed by the situation.

Tsunade cleared her throat and gripped the iron railings in front of her tightly, trying to find the right words to explain what was going to happen.

"We are in trouble, everyone." she began, almost apocalyptically. "Our village is in grave danger from an enemy most of you have only heard of in history lessons. The Village Hidden in Shadow will be upon us within a matter of days."

A soft gasp seemed to ripple through the crowds, many people bringing their hands to their mouths or clenching their fists at their sides. Tsunade noticed the movement of some of the more...relaxed Chuunin, and was somehow satisfied that they were taking notice of something so serious.

"We have been at peace for so long it is fair to say that serious fighting isn't something most of our trained ninja are experienced in. However, we need all of you, Genin included, to fight for us. I'm afraid there's no pulling back from this, because if you don't fight to stop them arriving, the village will simply fall and then everyone will die. Every. Single. Person."

She practically heard Naruto wince and bite his tongue to keep from letting off an angry outburst, and though she knew she was being cold and harsh, there was nothing else she could say. This was a serious situation and these children, because that's all they were, had to realise they were trained killers sooner or later.

"Chuunin, Genin...I want you all assembled in the stadium by this evening. Say goodbye to your families and prepare yourselves for a journey. We're going out to meet the Shadow head on."

She drew a breath to continue but Gaara stepped up next to her, looking over his shoulder at Zakuro, Temari and Kankurou before nodding.

"Sunagakure, my village, was destroyed by the Shadow. I have seen first hand what this 'Yamikage' is capable of, and let me warn you that it's something I'd rather not see happen to your beautiful village. With my last remaining warriors I will support you 'till the end."

He nodded again, more of a bow this time, and Tsunade saw he was truly grateful. He stepped back again for his brother to rest one strong hand on his shoulder.

Tsunade found she had no more words and simply sighed pathetically, resting forward against the railings again. "I'll see you all later."

I'm a little disappointed that our Konohagakure Jounin haven't posted, but no matter. I want everyone at the stadium (where the Chuunin finals were held, remember?) where Chuunin groups will be read out. Jounin, you guys can choose which groups you want to tag along with. Thanks to those of you who have posted, let?s keep on going!

After hearing what Tsunade-baasan had to say, Naruto walked out with the rest of the Jounin. His eyes were filled with rage but also excitement; then they were filled with a sense of hidden somberness. He couldn?t help but remember the days of Akatsuki. There was much darkness that loomed over everyone and bloodshed had become familiar to everyone involved in the matters of Akatsuki.

?I won?t let it happen.? Sasuke and Sakura looked at Naruto who seemed to stop in his tracks with his head bent down and his fists clenched. They looked at each other and then again at Naruto. ?I won?t let them destroy Konohagakure.?

Blood began to drip from Naruto?s hands. Sasuke sighed quietly to himself when he saw this and laid a hand on his shoulder. Naruto, still with his head down, saw a hand and looked up to see Sasuke and Sakura. There was something in their eyes that told Naruto that together they?d help protect Konohagakure, together they?d fight with intent to kill, and together they?d be a team.

Naruto unclenched his hands and flashed Sasuke and Sakura a goofy, yet determined grin.

?Let?s protect this village, guys. Because if this village falls, then I won?t be able to become Hokage!?

Despite the atmosphere of the situation, Sakura and Sasuke couldn?t help but chuckle. They both knew Naruto?s goal like it was their own. It was Naruto?s one and only dream to become the sixth Hokage, no matter what. If the Village of Leaf fell, then so would his dreams; there was no way Naruto could let that happen. Besides his dreams, everyone else?s dreams would shatter as well, they?d be without home, and more so, they?d be without hope.

?We have to protect this village. Without it, there?d be no meaning?for anything. I can?t let that happen. Not now. Not ever.? Sasuke and Sakura saw the glint in his eyes as he started walking ahead. He stopped and turned back saying, ?It?s time Team 7 showed everyone what we can do!?

Oni was listening barely and very uninterested at the beginning of the meeting, but through out the time that they were told of an impending war. His interest grew, along with his worry and concern. None of these emotions or thoughts passing over his face, it remained blank and dispassionate about everything and everyone, even when the Genin looked at him to see if he was had taken back and scared as the rest of them.

Oni waited at the end of the hearing for the Jounin to leave, then slowly started his leave. His chain rattiling and make his leave very obvious, dispite his usually attitude about drawing attention to himself. He could feel several eyes following him, watching every step he made and listen carfully to every rattle of every link, regardless of whether they wanted to listen or not. He exited within a few moments and was out in the village.

Not jumping from roof to roof, not moving inhumanly fast anywhere. He just walked, his hands in his pockets and his lone eye watching the way he went. Making the correct calcuations to avoid people and not run into anyone, while also observing the beauty of the village, remembering what he would be fighting for and letting it all burn into his mind to forever remind him that this village was worth fighting for. No matter what the cost.

No matter what was demanded of him. He continued his walk, walking until he reached the outter part of the village. The part of the village that lay a few shops, Oni strolled up to one, walking in casually and up to the merchant. The merchant smiled warmly at Oni, Oni came to this shop every week always buying the same thing.

He stopped at the counter and bowed his head to the merchant, then reached into his pocket and pulled out a little bit of money, just enough to get him what he needed. The merchant took it and handed Oni a small tin box, Oni grabbed the box and bowed once more to the merchant then left. He walked away form the shop, away from the village filled with people who were on the verge of mass hysteria and panic. Oni disregarded everything that was going on around him, only focusing on his goal. To reach the graveyard that was placed away from the village, he entered and walked around the graves as he was finding the msot direct path. Being vary carful not to disrespect anyone.

He soon found what he was looking for and got down on both knees, closed his eye and bowing his head a little. Then brought it back up and pulled out the tin bos he had picked up earlier and removed the lid. He then pulled out two incense and a single match from the box, then set it down. He lit the incense and looked at the grave markers. He placed one in the dirt next to one graver marker, then did the same for the other. He read the marker once more, like he did every time. But this time, he read it aloud.

"Here lies Kanpaku, Mizu, loving wife and mother. May her soul find peace and paradise in the after life, and may her loved ones remember for who she was and for what she did to protect her family." Oni's gaze shifted fluidly to the other grave marker, he read ir aloud as well.

"Here lies Kanpaku, Kaji, loving husband and father. May the village remember his contribution and passion in serving the village and giving his life for his cause. May his soul find peace and paradise in the after life." Oni shifted his gaze from one to the other, trying to remember what he could of them. He remembers that he was far to young to lose someone, especially both of his parents to meaningless death. He shook his mind of what had happened, and let the anger fade away.

He knew the anger would destroy him if he let it, he knew it would consume his soul and change him into a mindless killing machine. He desired nothing of the sort, so he said his usual prayer and then kissed the tips of his fingers on his left hand and placed them on the grave markers.

"I will make you both proud, and not let my hatred consume me. Nor will I fail to protect this village you both loved so much, I will fight until there is no longer a breath in my body. I love you both, goddbye for now. I hope to return to you both. Alive or not." He then withdrew his hand and grabebd the tin box, replacing the lid and stuffing into his pouch.

He stood up and walked from the graveyard, as soon as he was outside of it, he vanished. Racing through the trees to the village, racing from roof top to roof top to the stadium where he became a Chuunin. He reached it quickly and effortlessly. He stood on the streets and entered the stadium, wondering if anyone had arrived before him. When he entered he found Tsunade-baasan already there, with a few Jounin. Oni figured that the rest would arrive soon, he walked up to Tsunade-bassan and bowed before her with his arms at his side.

"I hope I prove to be useful in this war." Oni said with his dead and dispassionate tone, he then stood up straight and walked a bit away from her and sat down to the left of the door with his legs crossed and his hands placed in his lap. He closed his eye and started to mediate. Awaiting the arrival of the rest.
Well? this was a shock indeed. Mitsumi stood there rooted to her spot with the other Genin at the front of the crowd. Why would someone attack the Sunagakure? The young red-haired girl thought they had been at peace with most of their surrounding countries for a fair time now. She looked up at Gaara and saw the pain written clearly across his face. The loss of his people and his village must have been hard for the recently appointed Kazekage. Mitsumi liked Gaara a lot as a leader. He seemed to genuinely care about his village and his people in a way that reminded her a lot of Naruto-sensei. That reminded her? Naruto-sensei used to be her team?s leader before Oni got promoted to Chuunin. She hadn?t seen him personally in a long time.

Mitsumi turned to Mai, who had been beside her during the whole proceeding. She was in as much shock as Mitsumi had been. Beside her was Kuro-san, whom Mai had managed to clobber earlier on when he had crept up behind her and scared her. Kuro and Mitsumi laughed about it after Mai had apologised profusely to her friend. The young red-haired girl didn?t know Kuro-san very well. She had never been in too much contact with him, but Mai seemed to be his friend, so in turn, he also became Mitsumi?s friend.

To Kuro?s right was Ichiro and Kaoru. Ichiro had said something about Kaoru wanting him to see her train in the forest. Mitsumi felt herself sigh inwardly. She had only been in Konoha for half a day when all of the drama began to happen. At least it wasn?t a hard mission, although, it had taken most of her energy to keep up the pace for three days straight.

She let out an exasperated sigh as the crowd began to disperse, all talking about what Tsunade-sama had just announced. Through the crowd, Mitsumi could see the Chuunin all looking rather sombre. Oni was the first to leave the ?group?, although it really wasn?t a group. He had been in Mitsumi?s team with Ichiro and Naruto-sensei before he was promoted to Chuunin. She really hadn?t gotten to know him as well as Ichiro (but then, she had known Ichiro before the team?s were chosen), but they were on mutual terms.

To his left were Ikorose and Ginmaru. Mitsumi felt her cheeks deepen into a deep scarlet. She had always had a crush on those two, and she didn?t quite know why. It was probably because they were so strong and handsome that she liked them, but Mitsumi felt that wasn?t the only reason. Near them was Imi. Again, Mitsumi didn?t know Imi very well. She had never had a conversation with her, not that she normally walked up to strangers and started talking to them. If she wanted someone to be her friend, Mitsumi normally stayed silent around them until she could pluck up the courage to talk to them ? a stark contrast of how she acted around friends.

A sudden grasp of the situation washed over her. They had to prepare for the oncoming battle. Even if Mitsumi was tired from her last mission, this definitely wasn?t the time to slack off. She turned to Mai with a steely look in her eyes.

? Hey Mai, I?m going home to prepare for this. I?ll meet up with you at the stadium later, yeah??

Mai nodded quietly. ? See you there Mitsumi.?

With that, Mitsumi waved her goodbye to her friend and ran to her home on the outskirts of the village. She wasn?t going to let her friends suffer like the Sunagakure did. This? new enemy? They seemed like they knew what they were doing. Taking on the Sand ninja, and winning ? there must have been a well though out strategy behind it.

As she turned the last corner towards home, Mitsumi felt herself come face-to-chest with someone. Unable to avoid a collision, Mitsumi bounced off the person and came to rest on the ground three feet away. She mumbled at how much her bottom hurt when she looked up into the face of the person she had bounced off of. A sweatdrop formed on the side of her head and slowly slid down.

Oh dear?
OOC: Anyone is welcome to be the person Mitsumi ran into.

?So how are you two today? Ey Mitsumi-san, Mai-chan??

Mai found herself clumsily opening and closing her mouth as she looked up at Kuro, fumbling for the words she wanted to say despite how simple they were. Mitsumi, spotting her friend's struggle, stepped between the two of them and giggled lightheartedly.

?We're fine, Kuro-san. And you??

?Oh, I'm doin' great,? he replied, scratching his head casually. From behind Mitsumi, Mai cursed at herself silently before finally deciding on the right words. She bravely stood up straight and stepped carefully beside the redhead and managed to spit out her sentence, albeit quite louder than she meant to.

?Would you like to come with us to see the Sand ninja??

?I was actually heading there myself,? he chuckled. Mai's eyes brightened as he spoke, and she managed to smile briefly. ?Shall we??

?Let's go!? Mitsumi smiled, taking Mai's hand and giving her an affectionate wink. The three walked side by side through the streets until they came upon a large crowd entering the village's stadium.

?You think...?? Mai began, looking from Mitsumi to Kuro.

?Definitely,? Kuro grinned, leaping into the air and landing on the closest rooftop. ?Whaddya say we get some balcony seats??

Mitsumi and Mai followed after him and the three of them soon found a spot among the crowded seats of the stadium with a decent view of the Hokage, Kazekage and Sand ninja below. Mai even spotted Kaoru arrive and flagged her down, despite the presence of Ichiro and others in her company. They all perched together on the railing and shared theories with one another until Tsunade cleared her throat and the crowd quickly fell silent.

After the Fifth Hokage's blunt announcement, Mai felt her jaw drop in astonishment. It couldn't be true... could it? Genin and Chuunin facing malicious, experienced Shadow ninja? The thought was terrifying. Mai could barely handle battle practice as it was. How could anyone expect her to fight a force that took out almost every single person in Sunagakure, and was planning on doing the same to Konohagakure? It wasn't fair, and it wasn't smart, either. Maybe the others could do some good, but she was just going to get in the way. She knew it, and she was sure everyone else did, too.

Mitsumi, on her right, was the first to speak afterwards, and told her she was going home to prepare for tonight. Mai promised to see her later and watched her disappear. After she left, Mai felt a hand grip hers, and she turned to her left to see Kaoru biting her lip.

?Mai??

?What is it, Kaoru-chan??

?Do you... Do you think we can do this?? Mai was silent for a moment, taken aback by the sincere worry that filled her friend's normally cheerful, brown eyes as she stared down at the Sand ninja below. She had no acceptable answer, but she knew she had to say something. She never was the best at thinking or sounding positive, but when Kaoru was the doubtful one of them, Mai knew she had to try. After thinking it over, she strengthed her grip on Kaoru's hand and whispered back to her reassuringly.

?If Tsunade-sama is entrusting us with this responsibility, then I'm sure she believes we can, and so should we.?

&&&

?Bye Mom,? Mai smiled, wrapping her arms tightly around her mother. She and the others had all gone home soon after Mitsumi, and despite her wanting to ask Kuro to walk with her, he ended up leaving with Kaoru. Though she was disappointed, she understood that she was best friends with him, too, and she would surely need some support from him as well. When she had gotten home, she immediately packed and spent the rest of the afternoon training by herself. She felt a bit ridiculous, but continued anyway. She needed all the practice she could get if she was to be more useful than a lump when they actually had to fight.

?Now, you be careful alright? You'll come home in one piece, or else!? her mother smiled tearfully.

?I'll be back. I promise,? Mai mumbled, trying hard herself to fight back tears. Her father ruffled her hair before giving her a quick hug and a kiss on the forehead. She checked one last time to make sure she had everything, and walked out the door, all the while feeling like her heart was about to pop out of her chest.

?This is it... I hope I don't end up just being in the way like usual,? she thought quietly to herself as she walked slowly down the street. The sun was almost completely eclipsed by the mountains in the distance, and despite the oddly warm temperature outside, Mai felt chills and her skin was dotted with goosebumps. The closer she got to the stadium, the more upset her stomach got and the faster her heart thumped in her chest.

?I wish Kaoru or... Kuro was here,? she found herself thinking absentmindedly. She felt calmer around both of them, especially when they were laughing. Kuro always made it easier for her to smile, too. If she didn't run into him in the streets, she was sure she could find him at the stadium, but walking with him would be much nicer. By the time she saw the stadium in the distance, the sun had completely disappeared. Mai picked up her pace, suddenly feeling a bit more uneasy about being alone. She hoped she could find someone quickly instead of standing around alone.

It had been a few hours later since Tsunade- sama had told all of the eligible Shinobi in Konoha to say good-bye to their family and friends and head towards the stadium to learn of more, if not to know their missions.

Kaoru told all of her friends that she would see them later and that she would hold her head up high and do the best that she could... if only her mind actually thought that way. Kaoru never actually thought that she would go on an important mission this soon, but here it was, at the foot of her door... her training now going into the second level.

Kaoru then headed home and packed her belongings together as she sat on her bed, flopping down on the soft mattress and looking up at the ceiling, sighing. "I don't know... if I can do this..." she thought to herself, turning her head to look out the window. "I've lived here in Konoha for so long, wishing for something like this... but the truth is, I can't muster any words that would describe how I feel right now..."

She then turned to her side and drew a circle on her bed with her right index finger, wanting someone to talk to. Kuro left a little while ago so that he could pack, but... she felt as if something else was on his mind, too... or, for that matter, someone else.

"Stupid Kuro," she muttered as she puffed up her cheeks, angry at herself for thinking such a thing. "I don't know w..."

Suddenly, a knock came to her door as she thought those things. She quickly sat up and raced down the stairs as she yelled that she was coming. Kaoru slowly opened the door and let out a small gasp as she saw the person knocking on it.

"...Ichiro?"

"Hey," Ichiro slightly waved as he stood up from his leaning position, "I was wondering... are you done packing yet?"

"Well... yeah, I guess," Kaoru meekly replied, her index finger scratching her cheek. She didn't really expect to see Ichiro knock on her door for awhile, but... it was good timing... she really needed someone to talk to.

"So... are you ready to head to the stadium or not?"

"Oh, yeah! Sure!" she meekly replied, quickly running upstairs to get her things and saying good- bye to a picture of her parents before she headed out the door. After she locked it, she walked along the dusty road with Ichiro, her heart quietly thumping and her face flushed with heat.

"So, um... what made you come here to walk with me to our destination?"

Kuro and Shiro sat at their home silently, not needing to speak with one another, thinking of the task they had ahead. For the first time in what had seemed like forever, both boys thought back to their home, wondered how their father and mother were, wondered if they would escape the self proclaimed Yamikage's wrath...

?So how are you two today? Ey Mitsumi-san, Mai-chan??

Kuro had easily bounced back from the assault by Mai, more suffering from the conflicting feelings of shock and pride in Mai's quick reaction rather than the pain shotting from his head.

?We're fine, Kuro-san. And you??

?Oh, I'm doin' great,? he replied, scratching his head casually. Mitsumi and Kuro laughed casually. Kuro had never spent much time with Mitsumi, but he liked her already; anyone who could laugh with Kuro after he had been whacked in the head was good in his book. As their laughter died down, he saw Mai clear her throat and then speak. He couldn't help but smile broadly as the wrods flowed from her lips.

?Would you like to come with us to see the Sand ninja??

?I was actually heading there myself,? he chuckled. Kuro could have sworn he saw Mai's eyes brighten as he spoke, and that her pretty smile had even shown. ?Shall we??

?Let's go!? Mitsumi said estatically, answering for Mai and taking her hand. Kuro smiled as the two got a bit ahead of him. Mai looked back at him, and their eyes met, and Kuro smile grew wider. He scratched his head and popped a toothpick into his mouth, caching up with them.

They sat alone, the three, for a while, until Mai hailed Kaoru over. Kuro's smile faltered lightly, but it regained shape in no time. What was he worried about? She looked really content with Ichiro. Why not be content over here, right? The other gang came over and sat with them, and Shiro had plopped himself right beside Kuro before Tsunade-sama gave her announcement.

When she had finished, all the Genin were silent, and the only to speak was Mistumi, whispering she was going to pack. The rest sat there in silence, until Kuro heard Mai and Kaoru reassuring one another. Kuro had turned to his brother, attempting to take in the surreal event.

"Brother..." Shiro nodded, and rested his hand on his shoulder. What Kuro had not said was agreed upon; this place was there home, and they would fight until the end for it. Kuro nodded to Shiro, and then turned to Mai and Kaoru, wrapping his arms around the two, holding them tight. He smiled to the two of them, then grasped both Ichiro's and Oni's shoulders nodding to the two and Midori. He and Shiro then departed.

***

Kuro now sat on his bed, looking at his brother. They smiled at one another, terrified and with eager anticipation. Kuro shifted his gaze to his hair, which he had just used a simple justu to turn the bangs blues; this would make it so that neither brother forgot what or who they fought for. He sheathed his blades on his back- there wasn't much to pack as they didn't really own much anyways. Kuro smiled and turned to speak with Shiro.

"I'm gonna go--" "I'll catch up with you in a sec, just make sure you and whomever you're going to see are somewhere visible so I don't feel like a loner when I get there." Kuro smiled and opened the front door, noticing the sun was beginning to set. He looked to his brother once more and dissapeared into the night.

He travelled along the treetops and rooftops as quickly as possible. He stopped by Kaoru's house to see if she needed an escort, but found Ichiro already there. He almost slipped off the roof he was perched on when seeing this, but quickly regained his balance, and stood silenlty. He pushed his glasses up on his nose as he looked away, dashing towards the arena, faster thn before.

"Good thing Ichiro's there to take care of her..." So lost in his thoughts Kuro carelessly increased speed, barely tapping the rooftops withhis feet as he ran. Unfortunately, it wasn't very long before Kuro ran out of rooftop, and straight into a tree. He slid down the tree in utter pain, holding his forehead, which was bleading slightly. A female gasp came from nearby, instanlty managing to cheer Kuro up. Mai plopped down beside him swiftly and examined his injury.

"Kuro! Kuro! Are you okay?" Kuro smiled into the worried face, feeling all the confidence he had had when speaking with his brother return to him, fill every part of him, until he spoke without thinking.

"Now I am." Mai blused profusely at this, and so did Kuro. He hadn't been thinking, but he had meant it. He stood up, dusted himself off, and motioned to the stadium.

"Shall we?" Mai blushed again and nodded, walking right beside him. Kuro stared down to her and smiled, an innate sense of calmness settling over him. Whatever the enemy may be, whatever skills it might have would be irrelevant; Kuro was fighting for his friends, and was indestructable so long as they were there for him to protect. As they walked, he felt an increasing urge to hold her hand, but did not, unsure of how Mai would react.

So there's an enemy on the move, huh?

Standing in the middle of the arena, Ginmaru smiled behind his mask, leaning casually against the wall. Throwing back a lock of silver hair, he couldn't help but let a shiver of excitement pass through him, a half-mad joy of anticipation. With this new rival, there would finally be someone worth testing his sword against. Not since the Chuunin exam had he had a decent match.

Scanning the crowd, he was half-relieved and not at all surprised to note that there was no sign of Zensei Shinzaburo. The old man had doubtless already began his return to the Zensei home, where he would practice his sword. And the minute Ginmaru arrived, he would surely be thrown into battle again.

But what he did see in the crowd, aside from the usual nervous genin and the brash colors of Uzumaki Naruto, was a familiar face. One he'd seen just that afternoon, when his barbs had been so rudely interrupted by a call to action by the Hokage.

Kagami Imi.

Smirking, he thrust himself forward by the shoulders and forward onto his feet, strolling across the field with one target dead in his sights. His coat flapped around his ankles, once again on his body, and the two swords he wore, one wooden and one metal, thudded against his thighs. He thought briefly about drawing one, giving the girl a scare, but decided against it. Sasuke-sensei would no doubt have a few words to say to him about that.

So instead he just slid towards her, as silently and smoothly as he could, pushing his face next to hers. She smelled of fear.

"Try not to die too quickly when they get here, fool," he hissed, darkly, directly into her ear.

She squawked, flailed, jerked forward before turning to face him, eyes blazing and cheeks flushed. Priceless, he thought briefly, before leaning up to his full height, already beginning to tower over the girl as his growth-spurt hit.

"You ass!" she shouted.

He just tutted, wagging his finger at her. "Temper, temper, little Imi," he said, chidingly, knowing she could see the condescending smile around his eyes. "Why don't you save that for the Yaminin? Maybe you can actually make one bleed before they finish you off. you know, be useful for once in your life."

Briefly, he thought it looked as if she might cry, and a little part of him thought it would be quite amusing if she did.

"Or do you even know what that word means?" he added. "It never really seemed like you did."

She bit her tongue to keep from lashing back at him, and then her bottom lip to stop the trembling she could feel threatening at the corners of her mouth. She would not give him the satisfaction of crying because of something that came from his stupid mouth.

She was almost at the end of her tether, having to put up with his remarks twice in one day. It wasn't a happy situation to be in, and the redhead folded her arms protectively to try and put up a barrier. Her ears were burning and she resisted the urge to rub clean the one he had assaulted with his breath.

Ginmaru merely scoffed, seeing she wasn't going to amuse him any more by trying to fight him, if only verbally. He turned his back to her and started to shoulder his way through the crowd, swords bumping and thudding annoyingly.

"You're not one to talk about being useless!" Imi shout out him suddenly, her fists going down to her sides. Clenched, trembling. She thought she should stuff one in her mouth to stop herself before she went too far.

"Your own father sees you as trash! Useless, Zensei trash! That's what you are, you bastard. Do you hear me?!"

It was too late. The damage was done and as Ginmaru's head whipped around in anger, and Imi saw the flash in his eyes, she almost let out a cry of terror, her arms coming up defensively just before he threw himself onto her, the pair falling into the crowd and knocking against feet and legs.

She cried out as his fist connected with her ear and saw bright spots of light explode before her eyes. She tried to bring her arms up again but another blow hit her. Deadly accurate, full of rage, but having a sloppiness Imi could have laughed at noticing.

Usually so perfect, Ginmaru... she thought. Why don't you use your sword?

She barely noticed as hands came down to tug at the boy on top of her, his fists still raining blows down on her. Above the ringing in her eardrums she could barely hear him shouting, something about never speaking his family name that way again.

And never talking about his father.

No, Imi guessed, she really shouldn't have. Though she knew already that it would be a mistake she could easily make again.

* * *

'A head on encounter, many of these genin and even some chuunin aren't ready for something like this. Tsunade-sama is making a gutsy decision...but whatever happens, I will protect this village and destroy the shinobi of the shadow.' Ichiro thought to himself after hearing the announcement. His eyes focused and his body almost trembled with a heightened sense of excitement. It had been so long before he had the opportunity to take part in such a dangerous event.

Ichiro turned to Mitsumi who looked to be a bit in disbelief. He noticed her eyes wandering, he wondered what was going through her mind.

'Mitsumi...she's not ready for something like this. She'll get hurt for sure...but if she doesn't go it would be disobeying the Hokage's order.' he thought, as he quielty dreaded the idea of losing his closest friend.

He looked around him some more and noticed Kaoru and Kuro beside him, neither of which were strangers from battle but still, he felt as if the entire situation was a bit overwhelming and sudden. Ichiro wondered how many of them would actually stand a chance, but thoughts like that would have no place once the actual battle started.

He looked over at Oni, the two didn't speak but knew each other well enough from the missions they used to go on as a part of Naruto-san's cell. They nodded at one another after Kuro and Shiro made their departure, as Oni dissapeared quickly from sight. It was time for Ichiro to go as well. He looked over at Mitsumi, he walked over unsure of what he was going to say. But before he could say anything she turned to Ichiro.

"Hey, I'm gonna go get ready! I'll see you at the arena, ok? Don't be late." Mitsumi said, then taking off directly after not giving Ichiro a chance to say anything to her. He sighed to himself and took off himself toward his house.

He filled his pouch with kunais and surikens, and wrapped a few extra bands around his legs and arms that contained easy access weapons. He straightened his sword out on his back and took off without thinking. He had nobody to say goodbye to, and nobody was there to anticipate his arrival back home. Ichiro's parents were both dead, and his Uncle who was the original owner of the estate was away in the country of fire. He wondered if he knew of the threat of the shadow, but it was a passing thought as Ichiro knew he had to stay focused for Konoha's own battle.

On the way he noticed Kaoru's house. It was on the route between his house and most everywhere else in Konoha unless he was going through the back forests. His eyes fixed on the residence for a bit, and for some reason Ichiro felt it neccesary to dart down toward the front door.

"She's on the way...suppose it wouldn't hurt to pick her up and walk with her." Ichiro thought to himself. He knocked at the door, hoping she was already ready so they didn't have to waste much time. Kaoru answered the door, and looked up at Ichiro a bit surprised that he was there.

"Hm? What do you mean?" Ichiro asked.

"Uh...well. Just curious I guess." Kaoru responded, looking slightly down and away from Ichiro.

"It's nothing really...I just figured you were on the way so I'd go with you." Ichiro said. Kaoru giggled a bit to herself at the answer, but her facial expression dimmed a little shortly after wondering how to deal with everything that was going through her mind at that moment. It wasn't inconceivable that everyone who were ordered to the arena still might not have grasped the severity of the situation. Ichiro felt that soon enough, everyone would know just what they were going up against.

Suigintou listened carefully to Tsunade, occasionally sweeping dark locks of his hair out of his face. As she went on, he found himself getting ready for a fight, feeling that familiar rush bcoming to him. The urge to fight, to see those who would stand against his beautiful country lie beneath his feet, defeated. It made him smile on the inside. He would be able to prove to those that doubted him that he was better than what they thought of him. So much better.

As the Hokage finished up her speech, the crowd murmured amongst themselves, talking about the oncoming threat, or otherwise. He turned to make a snide comment to Ginmaru about something, only to notice that he had crept away. He grinned to himself and looked around for him, seeing him some ways away. He pushed through the crowd of people slowly, making his way over to Ginmaru.

"...even know what that word means? It never really seemed like you did." Suigintou listened to the rest of the conversation, somewhat enjoying it until she said something about his father. He swore to himself and sighed. The one thing you absolutely did not do around Ginmaru was bring up his father. Suigintou had made the mistake on accident once and Ginmaru freaked out pretty bad.

The next thing that happened was Ginmaru on top of Imi, beating her with his fists, hitting again and again. Suigintou flung his arms around Ginmaru and wrestled him off, taking him and flinging him to the floor to stop him.

"...Gin, get a hold of yourself. The worthless little punk enjoys making you mad as much as you enjoy reminding her how much of a waste she is. But be the bigger man and don't beat her up. She's too weak to take it. Look at her, she's barely able to stand straight she's so dizzy. You don't want to be in trouble before you can take it out on the Shadow, no?" Suigintou said. He didn't exactly feel that way about Imi, but he did believe some of it. And it made Ginmaru stop for them. Slowly, Suigintou extended his arm down to Ginmaru and hauled him to his feet.

"Hey, let's go see what the Genin are doin'. Always fun to poke fun at 'em once in a while, ne?"

"Not now, I have to do something. Sorry, 'Maru. Tell you what. You go "supervise" the cells and I'll join you in a few minutes, eh?" He said, patting Ginmaru on the shoulder and turning around, thinking to himself as he walked on.

What if I can't beat the Shadow though? The Hokage was pretty worried about it...and she's never worried about anything. What if I fail, what if I let everyone down, what if I die? Then again, as long as I save one life by dying, I won't be a complete failure. I'm already a failure though, so I have to redeem myself...

His thoughts were interrupted by a collision with a Genin that wore long red hair and a somewhat embarassed and worried look. He could almost see a sweatdrop slip down her forehead.

"Err...hello there." He spoke awkwardly, his icy eyes looking down at her as he brushed a hand through his hair, pushing his hair out of his eyes and playing with his ring.

"Whatever," Ginmaru says bitterly, turning with every intention of striding away in a huff, of storming off with coat billowing. But he stops, and turns sharply, drawing his wooden sword in a flash with the tip pointed dead at Imi.

"I didn't use this," he hisses. "Because you aren't worth it. And you'll never be worth it."

Then he's gone in a flicker, not giving her a chance to retort, not lingering to see her expression. He's had enough of her for one day. More than enough. A sick rage stews inside him. Part of him wanted to scream at her back there that at least he had parents, but sometimes he couldn't the miserable orphan lucky. There was no one to be ashamed of her - except, of course, for him.

He doesn't go bother the Genin like he'd said. Instead, he goes to the Zensei compound, lingering at the gates. With a heavy sigh, he walks inside, and quite suddenly bumps into someone. It's a cousin, a smaller boy, hair dark unlike Ginmaru and his direct relatives. He looks fearful, and the blind hate that is in Ginmaru's eyes only worsens it. With a sick smile behind his mask, Ginmaru shoves him against a wall.

"Grab a bokken," he says, sneering cold. "We're going to spar. And if you're very, very lucky, cousin, I'll let you walk away."

Ginmaru has every intention of forcing him into the room where the practice weapons are kept, but then a harsh voice echoes across the wooden pathways that connect the various builds of the Zensei compound. Zensei turns, the rage turning to a cold ball of ice in his gut. The tall, wiry form of Zensei Shinzaburo glares at him, eyes cold as always, chips of granite in his head.

"Ginmaru!" he booms, wooden blade already at his side. "Leave the weakling alone. I will gladly be your sparring partner today."

"Father," Ginmaru murmurs, dropping his head instantly so his bangs hang in front of his eyes. "I do not think that wise, with the advent of battle. The more Zensei swordsmen fit to fight, the better for Konoha, is it not?"

"You fear defeat?" Shinzaburo asks plainly, no smugness in his tone but condescention dripping from his words.

Ginmaru's fist clenches and his head snaps up, bloodlust flaring up in his heart. "I fear for you old man!" he snaps.

It's barely out of his lips when his father stands before him, towering, daunting, bringing with him a chill of ice. Faster than Ginmaru can even track, his hand swings out, not a fist but the back of his hand. It cracks against Ginmaru's cheek, deafening. His face snaps to the side and his eyes go wide. It is not pain that robs him of his voice then, but shame. If there was any respect for him in his father's heart, he would be bleeding on the ground.

"Watch your tongue or I will take it, boy," Shinzaburo growls. "Don't be a fool like this around the enemy, or the first Shadow you meet will take your head."

"They will not best me!" Ginmaru cries, twisting to meet his father's stern gaze. Shame leeches from his voice, desperation too.

For a long moment, they merely stare, Shinzaburo cold and unfathomable in his silence. At last, he speaks, no expression readable on his face.

"Kill a Shadow on your first mission," he says just as dryly as he looks. "Or you will never have honor in this clan. You will be nothing but a disgrace."

Ginmaru doesn't speak a word until he turns to leave. His cousin is still there, behind him, timid and pathetic. He reaches out tentatively, voice wavering. "G-Ginmaru-senpai...?"

His bokken is drawn in an instant and he whirls, the word smashing into his cousin's jaw, sending him sprawling. Fluidly he spins, chakra flaring and then he looses it with an animal cry, all rage and hate and hollowness. The sword stabs into the stone pillar of the Zensei Gate, shaking slowly.

"Just you wait, father," he spits, soft, venemous under his breath. "I will kill more Shadows than you will believe. And then, I will kill you. Just you wait."

In a whirl of cloak and shadow, he's gone, disappearing again into the wilds of Konoha. Later, alone, he stands in the stadium, awaiting others arrival. In his heart, there is nothing but hate.

In his heart, there is the need to kill.
Mitsumi opened her mouth a few times to try and say a few words, but soon realised she must have looked like a goldfish, and quickly pressed her lips together.

Before her stood the Chuunin known as Suigintou. He had been a figure of Mitsumi?s silent affections for some time now. To her, his dark appearance, dotted with a few flashes of red every so often, completely took her breath away, as it had that moment. Her eyes wandered over his face briefly, watching him push his hair out of his face to look at her more closely. Mitsumi felt her whole face turn the same shade of red as her hair. She quickly looked down at the ground, desperately trying to find something more interesting to look at.

? Err? hello there?? Suigintou greeted her awkwardly after their collision.

Again, Mitsumi tried to get some words out of her mouth in a sensible fashion. This time, she half succeeded.

? Suigintou-san? hello?.? she murmured quickly. Even if it was two words, it was still something. Suigintou gave the nervous girl in front of him a strange look, wondering what was wrong with her. He had seen her before in other teams as a Genin, but never actually paired with her.

? What is your name?? the Chuunin asked, a hint of kindness in his voice as he played with his garnet ring.

Mitsumi shifted her weight from one foot to the other uncomfortably, not being able to look up at the person before her. This is so nerve racking! the young red-headed girl though to herself desperately. And just before this big mission with the Shadow-nin. Ohhhhh?. what to do? what to do?

? Um? sorry? I really have to go? and get ready? bye!?

Before Suigintou knew it, Mitsumi was off like a rocket, hurtling down one of the back alleys towards her house. After a few minutes of flat-out running, she lent against a wooden plank fence, her hand over her heart. It felt like it was going to leap straight out of her ribcage and bounce along the path before her. The sun was beginning to set over the cliffs of Konoha. Mitsumi?s eyes flew open, realising she was going to be late.

Sprinting the rest of the way to her home, Mitsumi leapt onto her balcony and clambered through her open window. She snatched a pack from her cupboard and stuffed it with a change of clothes, maps, a few technique books, her two custom-made Fuuma Shuriken and replacement Senbon. Running downstairs, the young girl kissed her mother and father goodbye, giving them a solemn hug each, before dashing out of the front door.

Mitsumi made her way to the stadium hastily. She dodged people left, right and centre, all the while strapping her full Senbon pouches to her left and right thighs and her small smoke-bomb pouch on her upper right arm, as she was left-handed.

The murmuring of the anxious crowd of Konoha ninja greeted Mitsumi as she tottered down the stairs of one of the upper tiers of the stadium, trying to find any of her friends to sit with while they waited for the proceedings to start.
OOC: Sorry it?s not the best. Very late. *snore*
