Sketchbook

I thought it'd be neat to make a sketchbook of sorts for OB. Anyone can post any piece of art they want to (whether it be drawings or graphics or whatever), and post what they're working on and anything else you'd want to add.

I recently bought a journal I add to every once and a while. Anything I want to write I jot down and when I'm bored I doodle all over it.

Drawing-wise, I've sort of become bored of putting characters into cookie-cutter shapes. I've been trying to start drawing sequences of movement or random shots. And I've realized animation sequence is hard as ****. I've spent my whole life drawing stuff without using shapes as bases, and movement forces you to realize that sometimes humans bodies are just awkwardly posed.

I'm also trying to become familiar with the Disney/CalArts style, but style transition also hard. :/

But anyways, post away. If you have something not special but you want to show it, this is a good place to put it. :)

I love the idea, Lunox.

Anyway, I'm currently making designs for future shirts I want to make. I have one design more or less finished here. As you can see, a girl would be more likely to wear it. Any suggestions on modifications?

Also, I'm looking for Mao Zedong stocks (or any high-quality communist imagery)... if you've got any, drop me a PM. I'm thinking of putting the text on this on a slant and putting Mao somewhere on it. The text says "coup d'etat" in Russian.

Fantastic idea, Lunox. This way, indstead of seeing more completed works, we can look on how OB artists sketch in their spare time or a bigger project they're working on.

Lunox: Very nice, wonderful sketches. I can't wait to see the finished animation, as how the drawings look great and animations are hard to make in general.

Retri: Wonderful shirt designs, Retri. I absolutely love the Star logo, what with the rainbow and the "3" in one of the stars. I'd say that it would look fantastic on a white or light blue tank top... I'd most likely buy it, very much so. I also should suggest making it a different variety of colours, attracting to people's liking.

I would love to see more of these in the future. ;]

As for me, well... I'm currently working on a few pictures ATM, but this one is one that I just recently started colouring.

This is my original character, Rease, and one of his wings. I'm going to go around a dark/gothic/emo perspective, but what do you guys think?

And also, my latest banner works. I dunno where my style is going... I'm just toying around with old and new methods.

Yes? No's? <3's?

Again, wonderful idea, Lunox. I hope this thread doesn't die way too soon... it'll be too much fun.

Well, I've been doing some Photoshoping as of late. Nothing too grand though.

Everything else is kinda old, so it doesn't show my current skill.

Retribution: Your t-shirt design reminds me of the whole Charlotte Russe/Forever 21 shirt style, which I know a lot of girls dig. The only part that I'll pick at is the rainbow shooting off into the corner, and where that'll really go on the shirt. Nice design, though! Are you thinking Threadless?

KW: I never really know what to think of the type of banners you posted. The background brushes give off the whole cool and edgy look, but I part of me wonders about if the 2D pictures mesh well with it. I'm sure you have a solid sense of balance and taste, though. I'm not huge into graphic design, so I can't say much. lol
KW[/b']: ... The background brushes give off the whole cool and edgy look, but I part of me wonders about if the 2D pictures mesh well with it. ...
The first two don't. The background is nice and smooth, but the stock used on them doesn't blend in, which gives the impression of it being a photoshop doodle with stock pasted on it.

In the first one it's mainly because of the stock having a lot more contrast, making it look all edgy and strengthens the fact that it - apart from the guys hair - doesn't fit with the background. At least I'd advice making sure the stock doesn't get a lot more contrast than the background, and when it does, to try and compensate the two.

In the second one it's probably because it's a huge close-up on the guys head, which is black and white with a tiny bit of green, pushed way in the left corner. It disturbs the balance a lot and draws all the attention off the smooth looking background, to a corner where there's nothing special. Here I'd advice never to use upclose shots of things and to push them in the corner. The other two banners have the advantage that the stock looks more dynamic. With this one, he'd probably have to be smaller and a bit more to the right to make it look more dynamic. Plus, it'd fix the balance in the banner a lot.

The third banner is lovely. It's smooth, it all blends, it's wonderfully outbalanced. The only thing I don't really care for is the text, and that the whole thing is rather small. But those are just two little issues. The rest of the banner rocks my working boots.

Overall your backgrounds look smooth and cool and I love the little details - like a butterfly - that you occasionally use in them. Though the first two were really similiar, especially with the text. It's just that, when you use stock, you really have to think about how you use the stock and how it would blend in with the background. I think I'm one of the few people who would actually prefer a banner without stock than one with stock that doesn't look right.

Oh, and Alex: Mao tees are blimey. Make sure to send me one.

Mao t is on hold because I can't find a high res image of the misunderstood tyrant. ;D

Instead, there is this design I whipped up. I'm in general liking my style for t-shirts, but I'm having trouble getting ideas, and I feel like this one might be cliche and overdone. Ideas? Criticism? Tweaks or just start over again?

As an aside, Matt, try to make things look less busy. Your main focus and the background blend together and so the focus is lost.

I ruv the big text on that design. The low spacing of the text makes it eye catchy and will have lot's of people stare at it. The little text might be a little bit too... I don't know how to put it. I like little - hardly readable - text when it's a whole lot, but this seems a little bit too little. Perhaps if that type of small text would be more on the shirt, like on the upper side of the Algorith or just more present under the word...

Hm. My mind is playing around with me. I'd have to toy around with PS or PSP a bit too find out what exactly I'm looking for, but at the same time my PC is playing around with me too, so I can't right now.

Ruv the shirt though. And the coloured background looks a lot fancier and more stylish than the white one in the first tee, I think.

So I set out to try and learn how to draw western cartoons, mostly the John Musker/Ron Clements era of Disney. And I tried to draw Jim from Treasure Planet... and every time I tried my end result looked like Jim's one-legged second cousin removed. P:

But now I think he looks more like just Jim's second cousin, so I guess it's getting better? >>; I really don't know how animators can do this.

Also, I somehow produced this. Disregard the fact that I ignored every art principle ever, not that I knew them to begin with, and yes, I have no idea how to use colors.
