Okay Otakuites, time to throw on your nostalgia caps, take a trip dowm memory lane and remnisce about that time long, long ago called the 90's...

The 90's were an awesome time, so here's a thread dedicated to the awesome fads and trends of the 90's. What made the 90's special for you? What kind of things did you get up to and enjoy during the last decade of the previous millennium?

Here are the more memorable events, fads and trends that I think made the 90's awesome....

The Simpsons had become a household name by 1991, having successfully transferred the one minute Tracey Ullman show sketches into a half hour show unto it's own, it only made sense that a hit song sung by the Simpsons was released. So in 1991, Bart Simpson hijacks his schools recital and proceeds to "Do The Bsrtman."

The video clip is awesome, with it's quick cuts and rappy pace. It is also interesting now as a time capsule look into early Simpsons animation. I didn't remember that Millhouse's hair was black before it was blue. Principal Skinner's

Before there was Eminem, the was Ice Ice, baby. Vanilla Ice was the original white rapper, and he is infinetly cooler than that poser Eminem ever will be. If rhymin was a drug he would have sold it by the gram. Ice gained popularity with hits such as Ice, Ice Baby and the Ninja rap, before diving into obscurity, intentionally, of
course.

The NBA franchise had no relevance to New Zealand, none of the teams represented us, yet, the basketball trading cards hit our islands with a tremendous force, surpassing every kids desire to collect Rugby and League cards, and making Michael Jordan a househld name. half the world away.

I never was that into them, but I did get a cool Chicago Bulls ringbinder.

[size=2]Chatter Rings were the ultimate annoyance tool. A yo-yo on steroids. Chatter rings were guaranteed to anoy someone no matter where you played them. It was cool to preform tricks such as walking the dog, steerign the wheel etc, while still keeping the five rigns spinning, and emitting the hissing sound they were synonymous for. Evantually, they were banned in schools, which helped their decline in popularity, they were replaced by....[/size]

[size=2]I'm sure no-one north of Australia and New Zealand remembers. or had these, which became the card to collect long before Pokemon cards came into the fray. The most sought-after cards were "hot" cards, which had a little black spot you applied heat to to reveal a hidden picture. They were awesome cards to collect and trafe until everyone had the whole set, then they released the lame space oddbodz collection, which were just re-hashes of the original cards depicting "space" verions of the original characters. Then came the super-lame hyperheadz, the series died after that. The ultimate card to get was the "hot" version of the Doc. Fever card (pictured above) If you got this card, you were it, the coolest, the ruler of all.[/size]

[size=3][b]Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles![/b][/size]
[size=2]Heroes in a half shell, turtle power! The catchcry for a series that I was absolutely hooked into in the 90's. The Ninja Turtles were the coolest superheroes around, because they happened to be njna, and mutated turtle at the same time. their mentor, master Splinter was mutated into a giant rat, which is also cool. TMNT also had a cool cast of wacko villains, like BeBop and RockSteady, the Shredder, and Krang, a talking brain, who was arguably the coolest character in the series by virtue of being a talking brain. Pogs became so popular in the 1990s that hundreds of types of pogs were manufactured, covering a wide array of toys, cartoons, movies, games, sports and images of famous people on the front of the pogs. The popularity of the game spawned knockoffs, such as "Slammer Whammers," a similar game released under a different brand name. Today the pog craze has tapered off, but pogs can sometimes still be found on eBay and in game and card stores. During the early 1990s, a national pog tournament was held every February 7 in honor of the game's inventor's birthday.

Ah thank you Wiki for that bit of info I posted above. I was past the age of Pog playing when it became popular. I remember working at this music/video store and we would sell them. One of the more kitschier ones was a metal Pog with the image of OJ and the infamous white Bronco. It said something like "The Juice is Loose" or something to that effect. I swear, the kids would come in a spend all their money on these little cardboard pieces.

I do just want to make note that the TMNT original animated series came out in 1987 making it instantly popular with the Saturday morning crowd. Being a child of the 80's I totally remember my big brother collecting the comics that started in 1984. So the 80's should get credit for starting that fad. ;)

Indeed the greatest times of my life were spent watching Angry Beavers, Rocko's Modern Life, and Pete & Pete and we cant forget Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! I believe that humanity has taken a step up in my eyes just based on your awesome lineup of insanely great shows... However I feel the need to add Camp Anawanna! and Are you Afraid of the Dark as all these shows are wonderful!!!

[size=1]Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network were at their best in the 90s, that's what I grew up with, and I miss it. The only cool American cartoon they've come out with since then was Teen Titans, haha.

Oh yeah. You had to roll around the cul-de-sac in style. I know that they had other battery-charged vehicles for kids, but this was the coolest one by far. Well... okay, those four-wheelers were pretty awesome too.
I got into a lot of fun adventures with these. Mainly chasing the ice cream man down the street, though. :cool:

Plus all the awesome games that came out of this era. Then the movies..chya! Alot of my favorite movies are from this time. They actually made good comedies then, in my opinion. Hot Shots, Ace Vnetura, Naken Gun, Airplane, etc.

I remember pogs, I wasn't a fanatic but I played a little. My brother and I got into from the neighbors nephew, Matthew. He was a strange kid. He had tons so he gave us some, then we all traded and whatnot. It was awesome. I was too young for a job at the time so I never actually bought any. I still have all of them still, actually. Hehe.

Another rage was Crazy Bones. I don't know if this only became popular over here in my neck of the woods, or all over the U.S., but this things got very popular. I was in fifth grade at the time. My brother and I would always beg our dad to take us to the drug store and buy us a pack. Basically they're these little plastic characters that resemble odd things. My favorite was Iggy. My brother like Top Hat alot.

You don't only collect and trade but you can play with them. I think there were several ways to play but the only way we did it was you'd line up as many 'Bones' as you and your opponent wanted, and you would flick one of your to knock one of theres down. You would take turns doing this.

You can play for fun, or play for keeps. In other words, if you get all they're Bones knocked over then you could pick one of theres to keep. Depending on what you agreed on.

You could also buy little cases to keep them in, which were actually little coffins in assorted colors. Each Coffin could hold 35 Crazy Bones. My brother and I each had two of them, we had almost all of the CB, including some of the other versions. They even had a Dragonball Z version, lol. I got like 7 packs of them free at one point.

We still have them all, somewhere.[/SIZE]

My memory of the 90's: Wide Leg Jeans. When both males and females wore jeans with the widest possible legs. We were walking around with pants that looked like two long skirts on each leg.

I paid too much for those. =P

Don't forget AOL! [B]America Online[/B] and that awful dial-up system. I had so many good memories when the internet first became big.

[color=#4B0082]The [b]Super NES[/b] is home to the holy trinity of Nintendo classics: Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Super Metroid; all are arguably the best in their series. These three remain to this day among my all time favorite games, along with a few other SNES titles. Me and my brothers played our SNES so much that, despite taking good care of our controllers, one of them wore out from the sheer amount of use it got.

Also, the [b]Nintendo 64[/b] was the undisputable king of multiplayer gaming during the 90s. Nothing else could top a line-up that included games like Mario Kart 64, GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark, Mario Party (back when the series wasn't completely stale), and the crown jewel of Super Smash Bros. Having four built-in controller ports helped a lot too.[/color]

I was watching Power Rangers: Operation Overdrive this morning (haha) and I couldn't help but think, "What happened to the original Rangers?" Even though the newer shows amuse me... it still gets out of hand, and far over-used.
For instance, the new Rangers have the lamest weapons ever... one of them has vacuums. But I guess the Black Ranger had a super-awesome war hammer thing going on.
Still. Original Power Rangers kick ***, and so does that opening song! It was one of those shows that made me race home after school so I could watch it (along with Digimon.) :)[/size]

People either loved them, hated them, or just thought the show was gross. Yeah there might have been a few jokes that weren't for it's intended age group, but I loved it and still catch it on Nicktoons Network. A lot of the old-school nick cartoons can be seen on it, although I don't think they play Hey Arnold that often.

Sure there were a lot of super hero cartoons in the 90's, but this one has a special place in my heart. This show is still probably high for today's standards. The story was deep, but I guess it would be being based on a comic. The [I]Evolution[/I] remake was nice, but I guess the original will always be the classic. Heck, Gambit was shown in all his glory in the 90's.

Everything I know in life, I learned from this show. My parents watched it all the time because they have a stupid sense of humor and, let's face it, this was the only place you could see any good music videos on MTV. When I was young, Beavis and Butthead were my idols. I learned to cuss, be a dumbass, and enjoy good music from them. Unfortuanetally I was still pretty young when it went off the air and a lot of that was lost....

...Until years later when my personality refleted those lessons once more and, wouldn't you know it, MTV2 brought it back for a stint.

Beavis and Butthead is inarguably one of the greatest television series of all time and no classic metalhead can argue with the duo's virtuosity and awesome stupidity. If you have never watched this show, you have never enjoyed life as it should be.[/COLOR]

One thing that I remember from the 90s was Gargolyes. I use to think that show was the best. Whenever I came home from school I would watch it. When I missed an the show I would always be upset about it. It was the first show that I had to watch no matter what. My favorite character was Elisa. I thought she was the coolest cop at the time.

During recess, I remember having "sleeping contests" to see who could keep their yo-yo down and spinning for the longest amount of time (but you had to be able to pull it back up). Eventually, they started coming out with those yo-yos with the 'brains' in them or whatever which were supposed to add to its versatility. But really, all the cool kids had a fireball.[/size]

As we all know, when Sega first entered the gaming scene, they needed a mascot. They found that mascot in Sonic the Hedgehog, the fastest guy around. Over the course of the nineties we received tons of Sonic games, from the main series titles like Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic Blast and the like as well as more unconventional series like Flicky and that one horrid party game.

Sonic spawned a ton of other crap -- multiple TV series, a long-running comic series, more games than anyone can count, all sorts of toys, CDs, and much more. In recent years the Sonic candle has dimmed a little as his name becomes a moniker for terible games. The new Sonic the Hedgehog for the 360 being one of the worst things I've ever touched, as well as that really bad Shadow the Hedgehog (though strangely enough most of the fans seemed not to hate it :/) though it has managed to keep afloat with great titles like Sonic and the Secret Rings and Sonich Dash.

Sonic the hedgehog has an immense fanbase, from the old gamers who played it in the nineties, to the peole who started with Sonic Adventure 2 and have been a fan since. Sonic weilds a ton of memorable characters such as Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, Metal Sonic, Doctor Robotnik (or Eggman as he more recently came to be known), Shadow the Hedgehog, Big the Cat, Cream and Chease, Rouge the Bat, and a whoe slew of other weird animal creatures.[/COLOR]

[font=tahoma]Ha ha, I was actually going to post about the yo-yo craze with yomega and what not. The ones with the "brain" inside them and the butterflies, the firestorms, etc etc. That was super big when I was in junior high school. It was a trend that was strong but did die down pretty fast. I admit to having 2 or 3 myself :).

Lot of cartoons have already been mentioned, lot of my favorites too so I won't reiterate. In addition to them though, I did have one that stood out as a more obscure title, as well as one that could have used more episodes:

PoDW focused on Ren, a young man with a prestigious lineage unbeknownst to himself who is caught up in the quest for the 13 treasures. It's your classic pirate type of adventure show taking place in a fictional world with creatures, pirates, and of course the deadly dark water that plagues the seas. I don't want to reveal too much about it because for anyone that hasn't seen it during it's original run, it's still a great show to watch now. To my knowledge there were only 21 episodes, but so much more could have been done...for the show to not have continued on with more episodes was indeed a crime :(.

If anyone hasn't seen this show, then you trully have not lived a meaningful live. The Tick was a parody of superheroes, and I'd be damned if it wasn't one of the best [if not the only one worth mentioning].

The Tick was insane (really! He escape from an insane asylum), and so were the rest of his cohorts and nemesis.
