Manga Popularity of manga in Japan

so, im doing a project on Japan for a Sociology class and i have to bring in a piece of something from Japan. I picked manga. i said to my teacher that manga is highly popular in Japan and that everyone reads it. and then this one girl says "manga isnt popular in japan! Not everyone reads it". i wanted to smack her so hard, because that goes against everything i've read and heard about on the internet.

That's a good start, but i need something more, and hopefully something that isn't a wiki or a blog/editorial. that website seems to be a little of both. i need some reliable, verifiable sites so i can shove it down the bimbo's throat.

any help you can give me would be great. :)

the bolded parts are what i'm looking for, since i'm in a Sociology class. However, wikipedia uses citations from books, which i cannot use. I need actual articles from the web.

so, uh...yeah. any help would be sweet. this project isnt due until next week, so i have time. :)

Anyway, as far as articles of those kind go, I would suggest doing some digging on ICv2. They usually cover the manga trends in Japan at some point and should have an article or two about sales numbers somwhere.[/color][/size]

Well, i really dont wanna use a book citation because i have no way in getting the book. also, like i said before, i wanna show that girl up who p*ssed me off.

the teacher doesnt care, but i do.

i know, it's stupid. but using web sources is the only way for me to go.

I would suggest looking up sales figures. I know that Wikipedia used to have something stating that one of the One Piece tankobons was Japan's #1 bestseller prior to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (If this girl thinks Harry Potter isn't popular, she needs to burn her dictionary.)
