Things that keep you awake

I'm sure you've had this happen, your trying to sleep and yet you constantly keep getting interrupted by something that keeps you awake. It could be a song running through your mind that you can't get rid of. It could be your roommates TV that is turned up way to loud, or their music.

There's always the one where you are thinking about things that happened during the day and its like your thoughts just won't settle down enough to let you fall asleep. And the one that drives me up the wall the most? Construction, since some of those machines are very, very loud. lol

Probably the biggest offender lately is having things that happened earlier in the day or evening, that I just can't seem to get out of my mind. Not that I want to forget, but I do want my sleep. So what type of things keep you guys awake? Or rather what are the worse offenders? And why?

Actually, I've suffered from insomnia m entire life. Even when I was a baby, I couldn't go to bed at night. In my child years I would lie awake and count endlessly. As years went on, i've never gone to bed without waiting an hour or two before passing out. For a period of my life, I took this as a very serious problem, though it was never handled properly.

Eventually this problem became null when I invented my own sleeping schedule (when I got into anime). Basically, I go to sleep and wake up whenever I goddamn well please as long as I regulate it around school hours. this causes problems for me, but fixes a million more.

Either way, it never takes me less than an hour after going to bed to get to sleep. I can never be comfortable - this is true even when I'm not trying to sleep. I can NEVER sit still and I shift my position constantly, and so is true in bed. And when I do get comfortable, I can't stand to stay that way for long.

There's always a million thoughts at once. Organizing lists, shows I'm watching, posts I should make, schemes, songs I'm listening to and songs stuck in my head mixed together.

Of all things... the one that gets me the most is my dog. She sleeps on my bed at night. And even though I have a queen sized bed and there is plenty of room, she always moves so that she's laying next to me. Most of the time it's no big deal, but every so often, like last night, she keeps moving and kicking me. She must have woken me up five times last night. >_<

Sometimes our neighbors play loud music, but most of the time I can't hear it. Sometimes I have lots of things on my mind, but usually I still fall asleep anyway.

You're looking at the biggest thing that keeps me awake at night. Many a night I stay up late to read the new posts on this and several other forums, and find out what's going on with the RPs. I have also been known to run Marathon-Mode Anime on weekends, and my best ideas always seem to be right around midnight when I am trying to go to bed.

I still find it wierd how I am extremely uncomfortable when I try to sleep laying on my back, but once I roll onto my side I fall asleep fairly quickly if the blankets have warmed up.

Also I tend to wake up regularly during the night due to various sounds- Thunderstorms are well known to wake me up, but there are also more subtile sounds that work too. Most nights I wake up 6 or 7 times, squint at the clock, listen to the silence of the house for a bit to make sure nothing sounds wrong, and then go back to sleep.

It is wierd though, because while I don't fall asleep easily or quickly once I finally am sound asleep I just plain don't wake up in the morning.

Usually I try to go to bed at exactly midnight, and wake up at exactly 7AM, of course neither usually happens reliably- but the goal is to balance out at an average of 7 hours of sleep per night, more than that and I don't wake up, less than that and I stop sleeping reliably. There have been times actually where I have stayed awake for 36 hours straight, but after the last incident caused by that I have not done so in a long time.

I stay awake at night thinking about all the dying and starving children in the world. The children growing up on the streets, without families. I stay awake because the weight of the world's pain rests on my shoulders and my guilty conscience.

....HAHA.

In all seriousness, I sleep pretty fricking well.

Seriously, though, I do think we need to start actively pursuing solutions...on a global/international level. One week you can be doing extremely well, the next week you find yourself destitute and scraping by. It's very sad, and it's something we do definitely need to help.

Well it's been a lot of things over the years. Newborn babies definitely keep one awake since they require a lot of care. Though it's been a long time since I've had to deal with that!

Sadly, most of the things that keep me up are health related. Most of the time I do just fine, but every now and then my health likes to decide that I don't need sleep.

leaf blowers. I hate them with a vengeance. I think they should all be gathered up and hurled off a cliff. I live in an apartment, and for some inexplicable reason, the landscape ppl think they have to start up with the leaf blowers at 7 or 8 in the morning. I'm not a morning person, so my night's sleep is far from over at that time. so I lie awake and throw dirty looks at the window as if the landscape dude is somehow going to feel my indignation and go away. just when the sound of the leaf blower starts to recede into the distance, then the garbage truck comes rumbling in and the driver begins a long and complicated process of seeing exactly how many times he can make smashing and banging sounds with each individual dumpster before moving on to the next one and starting all over again. and just when that stops, the next door neighbor's kids decide it's time to go outside and play with their dad's hammer and nails. as I'm wondering when the guy's going to tell them to quiet down, he comes outside and joins in with his circular saw. at that point, the downstairs neighbor's dog comes completely unglued and starts howling. and the other next door neighbor decides it's somehow a good idea to come out on her deck and have a loud and extended phone rant at her ex-husband, during which the entire neighborhood finds out things that they never wanted to know. :twitch: this is pretty much what my neighbors are like...

Speed. And the internet.

People on MSN keep me up, though I don't sleep anyway - anyone here who talks to me quite often on AIM should know this, I'm normally online until 5am or all night. I don't sleep very well at all, not that I have anything on my mind, just I don't sleep. Even when I'm tired, it's rare I say "I'm going to bed" and I'm asleep in the next few minutes.

Doesn't even bother me and it's not like I brag about it... I just stay up far too much. At most I get around 3 - 5 hours a night. It's not bad.

I can't sleep in a silent room though, that just freaks me out. I normally keep my music on when I'm trying to sleep, it's better than the silence.

Music playing in the background or the TV being on. That sort of thing always keeps me awake. And since I have the basement bedroom in the house and everyone else gets up before me, all the noise they make wakes me up as well. So I usually end up using earplugs so that little bit of noise doesn't wake me up.

Oddly enough, when I was on the road working as a truck driver, I managed to get use to how noisy the truck is when operating. So I can sleep through that and yet not through a simple song on the radio or player. XP Also, if I have the option, I prefer my room to be completely dark. I just sleep better if it is. Sunlight coming through the curtains, especially if it hits my face will wake me up too.

I love being kept awake by good things that happened during the day, even if it is quite rare for me. It's the one moment where I feel most comfortable dwelling on it. Needless to say, I don't like being kept awake out of frustration, which happens a lot due to the majorly thin wall between my room and my next door neighbour's because I can hear their conversations, which is just as annoying since it's muffled.

Honestly, it's as if they don't sleep. They stay up till about three in the morning chatting, and then I wake up to further chatting in between seven and eight the same morning. But to be fair, my brother does blast his music during the day which probably pisses them off some.

I have been afraid of bears since I was a little kid, no joke. Regardless of how much I love Stephen Colbert, he simply does not fear bears as much as I do.

I need a fan on when I sleep, full blast, unless I lay there in silence, and then I can start to hear my heart beat. It drives me nuts.

Other than that, I'm all good.

I sleep ok, I guess. Sometimes, I keep myself up by watching tv or something on dvd. Lately, I have been sleeping for three to four hours and waking up to go to the bathroom and then I have trouble getting back to sleep. It can take from one to two hours, sometimes more. When I eventually fall back asleep and depending on when my brother wakes up, I end up waking up. The basement bathroom is next to my room and he tends to have the radio on so loud playing 80's music and usually everyone else is up. He once told me that if he's up then everyone else is up. There are times when I can sleep pretty well, it just depends.

I'm such a light sleeper that just about anything can keep me up. If it's too hot in the house. If it's too cold. If I've been up for too long. Hell, sometimes after I finish talking to my GF I can't fall asleep for hours afterward. As a result I've learned to live with little sleep.

Man after I do that I fall right the **** to sleep.

What keeps me awake most of the time is my dog NOT SHUTTING THE **** UP AT 2 IN THE GOD DAMN MORNING!

or

MY THE VOICES IN MY HEAD NOT SHUTTING THE **** UP AT 2 IN THE GOD DAMN MORNING.(some call them thoughts I call them voices)

I really hate it when the moronic kids on my bus won't shut the hell up about sports long enough for me to fall asleep to the sound of Daft Punk.

Other people's pets. One of my neighbors dog's decided to pretty much bark off and on all night last night. It was annoying since usually the stupid dog doesn't do that. lol Cat's fighting do it too since we'll also have a week where they fight all the time and naturally they like to pick the part of the yard that's right next to the window of my bedroom. Being sick. XP Which I have been for the past few days. It wouldn't be so bad except the medicine made me feel weirder than hell and lying down just didn't work. I'm just glad I don't get sick very often or I'd get pretty damn grouchy. That and when I do sleep I have the wackiest dreams. :animesigh About the only good thing was convincing SunfallE to let me have her DS to play with while I get better. Hehe.
