Stephen Colbert: I am running for president

"I shall seek the office of the president of the United States," Colbert said Tuesday on his Comedy Central show as red, white and blue balloons fell around him.

Colbert, 43, had recently satirized the coyness of would-be presidential candidates by refusing to disclose whether he would seek the country's highest office -- a refusal that often came without any prompting.

Shortly before making the announcement, Colbert appeared on "The Daily Show" (the show that spawned Colbert's spin-off) and played cagey, claiming he was only ready to consider a White House bid. He entered the studio set pulled by a bicycle pedaled by Uncle Sam and quickly pulled out a bale of hay and a bottle of beer to show that he was "an Average Joe." Colbert said his final decision would be announced on a "more prestigious show," which turned out to be his own.

"After nearly 15 minutes of soul-searching, I have heard the call," said Colbert.

His recent best-seller, "I Am America (And So Can You!)," allowed him to mock the now-standard approach to a White House run, complete with a high-profile book tour.

Colbert said he planned to run in South Carolina, "and South Carolina alone." The state, one of the key early primaries, is also Colbert's native state. Earlier this week, South Carolina public television station ETV invited Colbert to announce his candidacy on its air.

Exactly how far the mock conservative pundit planned to stretch his impression of a presidential candidate wasn't clear. Colbert rarely breaks character on camera, including at his memorable speech at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner last year.

The Comedy Central host has often mobilized his fans ("Colbert Nation"), encouraging them to vote to have a Hungarian bridge named after him, for example, or to vandalize Web site Wikipedia.com with his version of "truthiness" and "wikiality."

Colbert said he would run as both a Democrat and Republican. He earlier explained the strategy: "I can lose twice." He claimed three running mate possibilities: Colbert-Huckabee, Colbert-Putin or Colbert-Colbert.

Minutes after announcing his presidential pursuit, Colbert welcomed CBS political analyst Jeff Greenfield to ask how he had changed the race.

"This is going to be one for the books," said Greenfield.

A spokesman for Colbert said he would be unavailable for further comment Tuesday evening.

In a guest column for Maureen Dowd in Sunday's New York Times, Colbert wrote: "I am not ready to announce yet -- even though it's clear that the voters are desperate for a white, male, middle-aged, Jesus-trumpeting alternative."

I think this is a rouse, like most of Colbert's operations. I wonder what will happen though if he's serious, and he actually wins. He has a bunch of supporters (myself included) that can vote him into office, and it would be hilarious to know that someone like Stephen Colbert can influence the American public by satrizing the entire presidential conflict and then become the president of our nation.

Then again he has won a bridge contest before and has got a town to name a complete day after him....:animesigh

Sounds interesting, of course I have no idea who this is since I live on a mountaintop.

When I heard my dad voting for Bush, I thought he was voting for the one in the front yard not the one who looks like he got hit by the pickup truck.

Still, that is something this election lacks, is a representative of the majority American. And hell no I am not voting for Hillary Clinton. Bad woman that is. Female president in our future may be, but her as our president would only be worse than Bush.

Dunno if he will actually go through with it, I do remember a certain Arnold something becoming the Governor of California in recent past though so it is possible.

Scary though, what this country would be like if the media celebreties took over the government...

You never know, if Stewart and Colbert were somehow our leaders, they could do great things. Or really bad things. Who knows? They're certainly more intelligent than any of us, is all I can say.

Also, I know this is off-topic, but why do so many teenagers and young adults hate Hilary Clinton? Whenever I ask people at school, they fail miserably to give me legit reasons.

She's a sell-out. Her plan for universal healthcare isn't as good as John Edwards', in my opinion, and she's been accepting money fro pharmaceutical lobbyists for close to a decade now.

How can I buy into that?

Colbert? Hilarious. But no.

Vote Justin.

I don't have anything wrong with Clinton, I just think that Barack Obama has the young, inspired leadership that this nation desperately needs after the recent faux pas in the Bush administration. Obama lacks the experience, but more than makes up for it in charisma and determination. Plus the man just looks plain awesome. He's got style and that counts for something ^_~

Whenever I ask people at school, they fail miserably to give me legit reasons.
Do you have any reason to like Hilary Clinton, aside from the fact that she's the former wife of one of the best presidents we've had in a while? She's mooching off her hubby's legacy, and she believes that will be enough to make her the first female president. Even though everyone is itching for one of those, if you take those two merits (neither of which she is responsible for), she is a mediocre candidate with less-than mediocre promises.

First black president, here we come. We'll have to wait for a real female candidate a little longer. Hilary's a man, anyway.

Actually what I was referring to would be the drama and scandals that would be produced- celeb. soaps on a whole new scale and at taxpayer's expense too.

Still that post is win.

The whole idea of Stephen Colberts' character on his show running for president makes me giddy and sick thinking someone who genuinely acts like that is running the most powerful country on earth.
I know, I was just making a point with a rhetorical question: most people hate her because there's no reason to like her.
One policy she supports makes me want to hang myself: Baby bonds.

All who are uninformed, look it up and vomit by the sheer audiacity and stupidity of a policy like this.

Stephen Colbert could run this country better than any of the actual candidates republican democrat or whatever. Why? Because he lies like a pro(an important quality in any politician) he's funny as hell(which calms everyone) and he is a generally awesoem fella. GO COLBERT!
