The World Without America

Karl Marx never was a degenerate boil infested philosopher with an addiction to gambling.

George Washington stayed a rich aristocrat, loyal to the British Crown.

Mao Tse Tung was a boring, overweight farmer that lived out his days in the fields in a southern province in China.

In this world, America was never conceived in the minds of mankind. Human freedom is one big celestial joke, because freedom is a lie. Great Britain was craftier and more careful with its resources. They did not overextend themselves, but kept a careful control over the colonies they held. China was very clever itself. The Emperor reigns supreme over his loyal subjects, and Japan is held quiet under a very tricky treaty signed centuries before. Germany, France, Italy, all the European countries recognize the supremacy of British rule, but have their own, smaller monarchies.

In this world, there is no separation of church and state. Revolutionary thought is not allowed, not even something men dare to think of. The common people have a fanatical love of their leader, and truth be told, the leaders in this world are a definitely smarter than those from our own. Queen Elizabeth raised a successor every bit as intelligent as her. The Prophet Muhammad appointed an heir apparent before his untimely death and there was no Sunni Shi'a split within the Muslim faith. The Chinese Imperial family was comprised of intelligent men, philosophers and scholars.

Think back to your mother's ancestors. Pick the country that most of them came from. That's where you're from. And now the fun part. My ideas completely come up dry.

Do I do the alternative universe route?

OR

Do I make the real antagonist in the story the suppression of revolutionary thought?

In this universe, I would be Chinese nobility, the daughter of a long line of bankers with expensive taste. Who would you be?

From what I can remember I'd have to go with a line of English Merchants / Traders depending on how far back we go.

I'll have to edit this later, just thinking of some stuff about Britain... *scratches head* time indeed is needed. Unless you want me to come out with the gay military babble again =/

As for me, like we were talking about on AIM, my father's got a military history and he's pretty much entirely British (aside from the Irish, which was his mother's side, therefore not part of his dad's side). So I'd be a daughter of a British Military officer - sailing the seas of course - probably running into some good ol' pirates and maybe even being one. With the behavioural problems my brother and dad have, it seriously wouldn't surprise me if, all those years ago, our ancestors were pirates because they couldn't be bothered with authority.

Like I said, give me tomorrow to come up with something constructive, aye? I am liking the idea of this though, as long I don't end up spitting out my opinions again O_O;; interesting concept.

I'm partial to the idea of a revoluntionary type of RPG. The second options tickles my fancy, since I'm a fan of George Orwell and Ayn Rand. It seems like it'd have a more poignant story if told.

Thats my input. If I can post over a long period of time, I'd love to join.

One question. Would the Greeks be held under the Ottomans? Or still be their own independent nation?

Not signing up or anything remotely related to that, but just a quick thought about your story concept(s). Why can't it be both? I mean, if this accidental traveler (or intentional traveler) is from the "normal" history, wouldn't they immediately be at odds with the ruling government? Probably labeled as a heretic and be hunted down?

You really could have both concepts working in tandem, and as long as you kept the story dry with regards to how the traveler got there, it should work nicely. By "keep it dry" I mean give no details. He or she is there, that's all we need to know. Though I'm partial to space-time breaks...wormholes. Crap like that.

Ah, so this is that RPG you were talking about last night.

No surprises here, I'd be playing the Irish insurrectionist, I can't imagine regardless of how history has changed that Irish people would be loyal to the British crown, it's just not going to happen D'Ann.

As we discussed, I'd probably still be some English goon living down in Cornwall (South of England for all ye not in the know) or some kind of Welsh farmer/commoner/Nobleman (Hell it's possible!).

Before you suggested it, I was more siding with the Welsh nobility anyways, gives me a chance to get some PR for the Welsh. Something like that.

It really does sound like an awesome idea too, really hope you get this into shape and in the Sign-up area (whatever the hell it's called this week).

Ugh... I'd be a loyal negro subject of British Africa. Considering my nationalist leanings I'd be in her majesty's army or navy thinking that service to my country will make the white people stop hating me. It won't, but I remain loyal anyways in hopes of my people one day being treated as equals among the whites.

Me likes the signups in Auditions so far. Everyone's doing quite well, and has made the minor changes I asked for.

One thing to remember. Civilization hasn't made any real technological advances. So just ignore the picture in the background of inwardscream's ultra sexy picture. ...I'm trying to decide if society's even figured out that coal burns better than wood.

Ideas? How would we power this massive evil society?

Think 1600s. Bad times.

Dark and cold and wet and uncool. Only time has stood still because of government control. At least technologically speaking. I should probably put that in the introduction..... ........wow I'm forgetful.

Wow, I thought it was modern times... Ah well. I think steam punk would be cool. Modern Steam Punk. In the 1600s, America was nothing more than a Colony so life without it wouldn't be entirely difficult to imagine. If we fast forward, technology and the state of human culture would be extremely altered and intersting to create.

Also I worked in bombs and spray-cans, as well as some modern fashion, into my character. I just think it'd be alot more interesting and fun in modern alternative times.

Well the majority of the world's population can read at least a little bit. So the printing press is an obvious method, but with state controlled papers, don't be surprised the news all looks the same.

We've got horses and carts, palanquins and feet. I'm relatively sure the car is still a few hundred years off. As far as entertainment goes, public theater and drama are a big deal. Shakespeare Lives! Actually, revolutionaries may be using these particular venues as methods to communicate their beliefs to the masses, however circumvently.

I suppose the existence of alchemical magic would be pushing it.... Any thoughts people?

Alchemy might be a little much for the story, but it could work if, say, the only people who could wield it are the secret police.

From what I understand with the weaponry we are dealing with (I could be wrong) is secret police with single shot muskets and melee weapons.

Those don't seem like really intimidating secret police.
Alchemy might be a little much for the story, but it could work if, say, the only people who could wield it are the secret police.
Forget Alchemy and go for new technology for the secret police, like say special spring loaded arm sheaths that with proper training they learn to send knives flying with but a move of their body. Something that without proper education the commoners would think was magic. It would make them very intimidating and yet stay within the confines of a world that isn't as technologically advanced.

Oh dear god, the suppression of the commoner has already begun, compliments of our very own Monarch. Thank you your Majesty for revealing the vast conspiracy.

The conspiracy of creating new technology to be used to keep the common man down. Oh the inspiration you give me...

But seriously, that's a generally very good idea. It stands to reason the people in power would use state funds to create new technology to enhance their ability to control the populace.

That is a good idea, by the way, when will we see this up in the "Theater"?

How about now? Is that good? Does it work?

YHeah so originally I was going to start in China, but I figure a summer house in Paris isn't too far off. Whatever, besides, I'm easy. I'll go with the flow. It's my job, right?
