After making sure the few servants at the home he and Alecia shared were aware that both Dame Anna and Henry were going to be moving in with them for the moment, Alexander headed over to Rosengard to see how both of them were doing as far as gathering their things for the move. It had been horribly uncomfortable during the ride back since neither one of them wanted to impose, but Alecia had insisted, telling them that they could work out the details later. It wasn't like they didn't have room. Their home, though small compared to Rosengard was still more than large enough for them to stay there.

Alexander was still dressed in his formal dark uniform of the Royal Police Guard since he had not bothered to change since coming back and though Alecia had gone over earlier, to apparently talk to Macey, she had not returned yet. Within a short time he was at the gates and he was not surprised when one of the servants approached him reluctantly.

"I'm sorry sir, but I've been instructed by Lady Bavaria to tell you that you are not welcome here."

I think not. Alexander thought. "I don't care what orders you were given, until Leonhart's wake is over I will not even consider such an absurd request. My wife is here and I am going inside to join her." He pushed his way past the servant who reluctantly pulled back and said nothing further.

She's certainly not wasting her time in taking over. Alexander thought as he hunted for one of the servants who was unlikely to know about Bavaria's order for him to stay out. It didn't take long and the young girl directed him towards the Library of the estate, taking a moment to show him the way. He knocked on the door and when it opened he didn't know who was more surprised. Him or the girls.

It was an odd sight to see, Macey, Eva and Alecia busy hunting through books with papers literally strewn all over the place, in some cases, stacked nearly as high as one's waist. What in the world? A moment later Victoria Ann's head popped up from behind a stack of books on the table as she stood up.

"What are you doing here? Girls only!" Though the way she beamed at him suggested that she wasn't upset to see him at all.

"I'm afraid we're rather busy here Alexander," Macey said as she moved to close the door. "Perhaps you could be a dear and check on how that horrible wake is going and come back later?"

Alexander started to object, looking over to Alecia who merely shrugged when the sound of someone running their way was heard, a second later one of the servants came running straight for Alexander upon seeing him.

"Thank goodness you're here!" She paused, taking a moment to catch her breath. "Something has happened to Fauntleroy. He's been shot!"

Alexander pulled back a bit, surprise evident on his face as the others gave off the tiniest of gasps of surprise. What in the world? He had expected the wake to get ugly but not like this!

"Where is he? Take me to him." He turned to Alecia, but she had already anticipated what he would say and was wading through the papers to get to the door.

"He's in Leonhart's personal wine cellar. There's some sort of odd contraption down there as well." The servant said hurriedly, a worried expression on their face..

"Go and fetch one of the potionists kits from the kitchen and join us there." Alecia ordered as her and Alexander took off at a dead run with Macey right behind them. Alexander could hear Victoria Ann trying to follow them only to be stopped by Eva.

"Let me go! I have to go and help Uncle Fonty!" She cried as Eva caught her trying to run after the group.

"You'll just get in the way Victoria. Don't worry, they'll take care of him." Eva told her as she tightened her grip on Victoria, attempting to hide her own worried expression from her.

The others didn't waste any time as they ran as fast as they could through the estate, startling servants and guests alike when Alexander merely shouted at people to get out of the way. Something that most upon seeing his uniform, did so without hesitation. Then a quick run down the dusty stairs into the cellar where another servant was next to Fauntleroy who was lying on his back on the floor, trying to stem the blood with a handkerchief. Upon seeing Alecia she got up and moved out of the way immediately.

"What happened?" Alexander queried while Alecia started to check where he had been shot.

Fauntleroy coughed a bit, grimacing from the pain. "I came to get something from the cellar but there were two strangers here, a man and a woman. When I asked them what they were doing here, he shot me and then left."

"Come here Alexander, we have a bigger problem." Macey called out.

He got up and went to join her, surprised by what she was looking at. He was pretty sure what it was even though he had never personally dealt with one. But there was no mistaking what appeared to be a timer in the form of a clock attached to some bottles and vials full of all sorts of different compounds, including gunpowder. It looked deceptively simple yet it was likely that it was more than enough to reduce Rosengard to rubble should it go off.

He shook off the shiver of fear that ran through him and turned to the servants who were rushing down the stairs, one with the kit for Alecia the other coming to him asking what they should do. He resisted the urge to order Alecia to leave and instead turned to the servant to tell them what to do.

"Go and inform Daedalus at once. Then you are to evacuate everyone from Rosengard immediately."

"But, Lady Bavaria gave orders that you weren't even allowed on the grounds. We can't possibly do that, she'd..."

"I don't care what Lady Bavaria told you. This is official Guard business now and Lady Bavaria does not have the authority to countermand an order from the Guard." Alexander grabbed the servant by the shoulders, turning so they could see the contraption, their eyes going wide.

"Is that what I think it is?" The servant began to tremble.

"Correct, and if we can't figure out how to disarm it this whole place is going to go up." He pushed the servant towards the stairs. "Now go! I want everyone out of here other than Daedalus. You will remove Bavaria and her family as well even if you have to drag them kicking and screaming, do I make myself clear?"

"Yes sir!" The servant turned and took off at a dead run.

He turned to Alecia who was applying a mixture to Fauntleroy's wound to stop the bleeding. "Can you move him?"

"Yes, this should slow the bleeding enough for us to move him to safety." She smiled a worried smile at Alex. "I need to get him to the closest medical center to get the bullet removed." She stood up as a couple of servants started to pick Fauntleroy up as carefully as possible considering the situation.

"Be careful love." She gave him a quick kiss before she turned to follow the servants who were carrying Fauntleroy.

"I will." He whispered back. Watching her until she had left. He turned back to Macey who was carefully studying the device. I hope we can stop this, or at the very least get everyone out in time, he thought.
If there was one thing that had been bred into Daedalus by the Mine Wars, it was the ability to sense when something was not right. It wasn't just that the whole event of Leonhart's wake continued to feel more like an attempt by Bavaria to reintroduce herself as the new Almagest clan head, as bad as that was, but something just out of reach... elusive and sinister. He regarded every aspect of the room with cold, penetrating eyes, but still could not see anything overtly out of place...

...overtly out of place...his eyes widened in horror, that was it. The security forces he'd deployed to maintain guard over the estate weren't at their positions. None of them !! How could he have missed that ? A freezing chill descended down his spine. If something had happened to them... he needed to find out immediately. Harriet was already looking at him with concerned eyes, despite the fact his pace maintained their slow movement through their wave of guests and dignitaries, he had suddenly drifted off into the distance.

"What's wrong Daedalus ?"

Her voice was quiet thankfully, they were too close to other guests for him to speak normally.

"There's something wrong, the guardsmen I assigned are missing from their posts."

Although she displayed no change in appearance, Daedalus could tell Harriet's maternal instincts had automatically kicked in, Harrison being her first priority. Wordlessly the pair broke apart and made for opposite ends of the hall, drawing a few curious glances, it could not be helped. Daedalus made a swift bee-line for Bavaria who was chatting busily to nobleman who was vaguely familiar to him, though no name came to mind. Extending his arm out, he gently grasped her shoulder.

"May I have a word Bavaria ?"

He could not easily discern the meaning of the look she gave him for interrupting her conversation. It was a mix of too many emotions.

"What is it Daedalus ?"

Her voice was calm, even pleasant, but the undercurrent of frosty hostility was becoming more and more readily apparent. If that was the case, all hopes for mediation were futile.

"Where are the guardsmen I deployed Bavaria ?"

Barely containing his fury, he watched as she drew her lips into a tight smile. Evidently she had expected him to notice their absence much sooner.

"They were...hesitant to take orders from me... so I dismissed them."

"You what ?!"

"There's no need to make a scene Daedalus. I've already requested replacements, they should be here soon."

There was that blasted superior smile again. It wasn't her arrogance or even her attempts to usurp his control, but to dismiss the entire security corps would leave Rosengard completely vulnerable... she had to know that. Was her ego getting so large she thought herself invincible ?

As he was about to speak, he noticed a flustered servant make his way towards, them, his breathing was heavy, but it was the paleness of his skin and the look in his eyes that worried Daedalus the most. He knew that look... abject fear. Bavaria turned to speak to the servant, her most polite but dominant expression on her face, Daedalus noted with some amusement as the expression shattered into a cold rage as the servant addressed him instead of her. His voice was low but filled with dread.

"Lord Daedalus, we have a serious problem."

"What is it ?"

"A few minutes ago two unknown persons broke into Rosengard via the wine cellar, Fontleroy discovered them and was subsequently shot..."

Daedalus continued to listen without speaking, his own sense of panic growing steadily stronger.

"Worst of all sir, they appear to have left some form of explosive device. Sir Alexander told me to inform you and then evacuate everyone from the grounds."

Bavaria's eyes grew wide at the mention of Alexander's name, Daedalus suspected she had given instructions that intended he not be at Rosengard.

"Thank you, I'll handle the evacuation order, please inform the other staff and leave as quietly as you can."

Bavaria's shrill voice suddenly broke his concentration.

"Daedalus this is unacceptable !! I will not allow you to dictate orders in my home !!"

That was the last straw.

"You have done quite enough already... Deacon. Take your family and leave now. If you do not, I will order the guards to remove you all."

As she was about to retort, he turned to the assembled guests, presenting his most public face.

"Ladies and gentlemen. Unfortunately we're going to have to ask you all to leave immediately for your safety. I've just received word the estate may soon be targeted by insurgents and I do not wish you to be harmed. Thank you for your co-operation."

Daedalus watched silently as his words registered on their faces, to their credit most calmly began to walk towards the large manor's exit. The stray few, Moebius included, who cast glances towards Bavaria as though expecting her to tell them to stay were quickly escorted out by the other Almagests in the hall. The Deacons merely looked on stunned that Daedalus would make such an order, but unlike the stragglers, refused to move.

Beatriste and Harriet quickly drew forward to Daedalus for an explanation in the now empty hall, as did several of his loyal servants, lead by Gravius.

"What's happened Daedalus ?"

"Alexander has discovered some sort of bomb in the wine-cellar." He left out the part about Fontleroy being shot, Bea didn't need to know that for the moment. "I want to find any family remaining and move them to Magitech's headquarters, they should be safe there, and Harriet, I mean everyone."

"Sir, what about us ?"

"Gravius, I need you to get my kit from my lab and bring it to me. Have the others remove anyone who has stayed behind." He cast a glance over to Bavaria and the other Deacons surrounding her. "Use force if necessary."

"Yes sir."

"You can't be serious Daedalus ! If anyone should be giving orders, it's Bavaria."

Daedalus' fist impacted into Jack's midsection as he leapt to defend his sister's assumed position. He watched as the man slowly slumped to the ground groaning.

"Starting with him."

Gravius smiled.

"Aye sir."

Quickly turning, Daedalus dashed towards the wine-cellar. He could feel his chest beginning to burn again, but ignored the sensation. There was too much riding on this for him to be distracted.
"Sucker punching son of a bitch." Jack said as he saw Daedalus dash off. As the guards came to grab him he gave them a very nasty look and they kept their distance.

"The nerve of that man." Bavaria said, "I have half a mind to-"

"Come off it, Bavaria. You should do what he says." Jack lifted himself up slowly, coughing again.

"Oh Jonathan, not you too!" began Bavaria. Her brother locked eyes with her, showing a concern and sending a message that only a brother could to his sister. "I'll find Morphia. And whatever you're planning Jonathan, don't let them wreck the house."

She pulled her brother's face down to hers and kissed him on the forehead before leaving with one of the guards. "I won't set foot outside of this house until Morphia is found!"

A guard moved closer to Jack, "I'm afraid you have to-"

Before he could finish Jack's fist caught him hard in the jaw. As he tried to recover he felt another hit him in the gut, and then a jab with the left, and a hook with the right. He went down quickly, "That's for your sucker punching boss. Tell him that if he ever tries something like that again, next time his flunky won't take his beating for him."

The guard's eyes rolled into the back of his head as Jack set off behind Daedalus. The old man was powerful but at the same time slow. Jack caught up with him just as he went down into the wine cellar. Jack caught the door before it slammed behind him, alerting Daedalus to his position behind him.

"Bloody hell, boy, I thought I told you to get out!" yelled Daedalus as he saw Jack descending the stairs.

"Shush old man. I'm in no mood, what's going on here?" Jack's attention immediately fell on the contraption. "What in blooming hell is that?"

"That's what we're trying to find out." said Daedalus, "If you're done I'd suggest you follow my orders and evacuate."

"God no," replied Jack. He saw the gunpowder on the floor around it. "It's a bomb."

"And what do you know of it, Mr. Deacon?" asked Daedalus, suspicious.

"I've used on of these before when I... nevermind. It's real bugger when stowed in the right place." Jack looked around the wine cellar, "It'll blow the foundation right from under the house. Who has access to this cellar on a regular basis?"

"Only the family and a handful of servants." said Daedalus, as he and Jack circled the thing.

"Well I'd suggest you check the family and handful of servants, this here was an inside job for sure."

"What are you saying? The family would never have done this."

"Sure old man. We need to disarm this thing before it blows our dear home."

No sooner than he said this, Daedalus was already examining the side of the device.

"Good job." Jack said as he moved in closer to help his in law.

The night was clear and brisk, and the view from the balcony Vincent's penthouse was astonishing. Magitechnological lanterns illuminated the streets and parks of High Czenoble, and the moon's light reflected from the clouds of smog below the city. Gadget felt fortunate to be with Vincent instead of down there amidst the smoke and pollution. Vincent brought him a cup of steaming herbal tea.

"Anova's finest quality, I assure you", Vincent said with a wink. He was unusually playful this night. Gadget couldn't help but to chuckle.

"What's so amusing?" the older man inquired.

"Everything in your flat is top quality, Vincent! I'm not used to being around this much fanciness."

"I'll make sure you'll get use to it. I want nothing but best for you... Gadget", Vincent said, taking a sip from the tea. But it was still hot and burned his lips.

Gadget giggled again. "Here, let me take care of that for you."

He quickly rose on his toes and kissed the man's sore lip. "Did that help?"

Vincent was red all over. Gadget didn't know where his audacity came from either - it had just felt so right at that moment.

"Yes, thank you."

"Why are you blushing like a maiden over a little snog? I thought you had plenty of experience with Macey..." Gadget teased.

"This is different, my boy. You see, we're both men, and..."

"So what? I've always felt much more comfortable around other blokes, if you know what I mean", Gadget said, and this time it was his turn to wink. "I lived with a few dozen of them, remember, and if you thought nothing ever happened, then you're badly mistaken."

Vincent blushed even more, if that was even possible. "Let's get inside, it's getting cold out here."

But Gadget could see that Vincent was anything but cold. They finished their teas in front of a fireplace, and suddenly Gadget felt himself exhausted. Vincent had prepared a guest bedroom for him, but Gadget laid his head on the man's lap instead.

Not bothering to wake him up, Vincent stroked Gadget's hair until his breathing steadied. Then he lifted him to his arms and carried him to his own king-sized bed. Gadget, pretending to be asleep, couldn't help but to grin widely.

Macey leapt up and went for her room, believing that she'd be no help with a basic mechanical bomb. Instead she went for her old notes and research, as well as Fonty's camera, pressing a servant that hadn't left yet into service.

Downstairs however, Daedalus and Jack had hit a roadblock. They had exposed several parts of the bomb only to discover that its composition wasn't quite what they'd been anticipating. Daedalus blinked several times, as if he wasn't quite sure what he was seeing.

"Am I looking at this right?"

"It almost looks like it came from a body."

Jack gently touched one of the wire-like strands, only to discover it pulsing, and warm. Bright red, he realized very quickly that it wasn't simple metal and wire, but biological. He rolled back on his knees, and turned to examine it from another angle. There were dozens of the things. Surrounding the detonator, and every other part they'd have to reach. Daedalus looked over his shoulder for his niece.

"Now where did Macey go?"

"What could she do about this?"

"She's a genius with this kind of technology. Odds are she could tell us what to do about it, cause damned if I know how to get around it."

One of the servants that had remained behind, armed with instructions to find Macey, dashed off, if only to get away from what he knew could very well be ground zero. And to his great surprise, he found her headed for the exit, a servant and her holding several packages and valises full of goodness knows what. Macey turned to see the servant rushing up, and listened to him gasp out his story, when she thrust most of her burdens into his arms and snatched up a smaller case and headed for the basement. She called over her shoulder.

"Head for the exit! I'll go deal with this myself."

In the cellar, Daedalus had picked up a small pair of pliers, and was pushing aside several of the tubes, just to have them slither back of their own free will. Cursing with frustration, he had to hold himself back from simply throwing himself on it. Jack turned just as Macey walked in, wearing a heavy skirt and holding a case of tools. When she walked right up to the bomb, she popped open a latch and revealed several surgical tools that looked remarkably out of place next to a bomb. Jack rolled his eyes as she withdrew a scalpel and a pair of tweezers.

"Oh yeah, what are you going to do with those. Cut it into submission?"

"You can help or hinder, but I'd prefer it if you just shut your gob and got out of my way."

Macey hissed at him in a low voice, examining the bomb visually, then putting an experimental hand directly up against the pulsing, biological pieces. Her eyes widened for a few moments, as she felt the pulse. She withdrew her hand, then leaned down to put her face very close to it, sniffing experimentally. Then she rolled back, with an expression of dawning realization on her face.

"It's blood."

"...you gotta be kidding me. They gave the bomb a heart?"

"I didn't even think this kind of technology was possible yet."

Daedalus looked haggard, and somehow impossibly old.

"It's new. We'd just begun creating bombs with biological components. But...I never thought the research had progressed this far."

"Well you're lucky I came back for my notes. They put this one together pretty badly. Normally, when they link up a bomb like this, if you cut any one of these lines on accident, it sets it off. But the people who did this one were either in a rush or rank amateurs. I can cut the arteries...for lack of a better word. But you'll have to tell me what to do next."

Macey blinked several times, breathed out once, then snatched up her knife and slashed through six small tubes, in a seemingly random order. Blood gushed up around her, splattering her face, hair, and exposed arms. The others retracted away from the clusters they'd need to reach, and pulsed, but otherwise held still. She shook her face several times, then scooted back and set down her things. Daedalus and Jack both flinched, then realized that they were both still alive several seconds later. The bomb remained still, not going off, but not disarmed either.

"There. Now take a look."

Vincent's eyes opened slowly and he looked down. He was naked. Gadget's legs were tangled amongst his own and his head was on Vincent's chest; Gadget's vivid blonde hair fanned across Vincent's skin. It was late evening and the pair had fallen asleep. Vincent remembered that he still had to return Gadget to Rosengard.

It wasn't long before Gadget stirred. He raised his head and looked into Vincent's eyes. Vincent smiled.

'You made love to me last night,' he said quietly, still staring intently into Vincent's eyes.

Vincent nodded. 'I hope you have no regrets...'

Gadget shook his head. 'No, but...'

'But what?'

'I've always been alone. I've moved between adopted families in one way or another...and I don't want this to end like that.'

Vincent ran one of his hands down Gadget's slender back. 'You have nothing to worry about. You are here and I think that's how it should stay. If I have to leave, I want you to come with me.'

Gadget sat up on Vincent and pulled the sheets up around his waist. He looked somehow shocked or surprised.

'Why would you ever leave? You're the Assistant Commander of the Guard...'

Vincent traced Gadget's thigh underneath the sheets. 'I do not plan to leave anytime soon. But things are changing here. I am losing confidence in the Guard and without Leonhart...everything seems uncertain. And back in Anova, my mother is ill. She may not live for very long. I may reach a point soon where I will have outlasted my stay in High Czenoble.'

Gadget seemed to be in thought for a moment. 'I understand,' he said finally. 'This is where I'm going to find the solution to my problem, though. So...'

Gadget leaned forward, his hands on Vincent's chest. '...can we at least stay until a cure is found for me? Then I can go anywhere in the world with you. At least then I can focus on being happy and living my life.'

Vincent sat up and embraced Gadget. 'Of course. And in the meantime, I'm going to try to find out as much as I can about what's happening here. I still have a job to do.'

Vincent was now dressed in a fine suit.

He sat at a small desk in his bedroom and leafed through his messages. During the night he had received a number of messages from his office. Vincent was shocked to discover that a serious incident had occurred only hours ago at Rosengard. He wondered why his phone hadn't rung all night; surely the Guard were on top of it?

In the back of his mind, Vincent felt guilty. He had expected to return Gadget to Rosengard just after dinner. Instead, the pair had remained at Vincent's apartment had enjoyed each other in a way that had made both completely forget about the outside world.

Vincent turned to look at the ensuite. The ensuite door was just near his bed and it was open. He could hear water running. From where he was sitting, he could see half of the ensuite mirror. In the mirror, he saw Gadget. Only half of his body was visible - the left side. He was standing with his back to the mirror. He was facing the shower head with his eyes closed, as water streamed down his body. Vincent admired his stunning physical beauty; the way his shoulders and torso gently tapered down to his hips and his utterly smooth, flawless skin.

Gadget was, in almost every sense, a wake-up call for Vincent. Ever since his divorce, he had buried himself in his work - nothing else had mattered. He acknowledged that he had probably neglected his family to some extent as well. The reminders of his married past were often too painful to bear.

But now, as he watched the young man standing in his shower, he realized that perhaps he had been looking at the world the wrong way. Perhaps he needed to let go and simply be himself.

Without warning, the phone interrupted Vincent's thoughts. He picked up the receiver and held it to his ear. 'Vincent speaking.'

'Vincent!'

Immediately, Vincent knew the voice. A younger voice than his own, with a stronger Anovan accent.

'Vincent? Are you there?'

'Yes, I'm here. I just didn't expect to hear from you, that's all. It's very late.'

The voice on the other end gave a hearty laugh. 'What a greeting for your cousin! You should be glad that I remembered your number! Besides, it's never too late to talk to me!'

Vincent rubbed his forehead. His cousin, Gustave, had always been a rival of sorts. On the surface, the pair didn't always get along particularly well - although this was mostly the result of playful taunting more than anything else. In truth, Gustave viewed Vincent as an older brother. It was Vincent who had convinced his father to help Gustave start his own airship company in Le Monde, after all.

'So what do I owe the pleasure?' asked Vincent sarcastically.

He heard a chuckle on the end of the line. 'Well, I will be in town in two days' time for the Chimaera Cup. It's the largest event on the racing calendar. I have several Chimaera in the race this year and I was hoping you'd join me. I've booked a corporate marquee and everything!'

Gustave sounded excited; he loved Chimaera races, especially when his own purebreds were participating. No doubt he was already having the the Chimaera and jockeys herded aboard some elaborate airship, bound for High Czenoble.

'I'm sure I'll be free. Are you inviting anyone else?' asked Vincent.

'Well,' said Gustave, 'I would be honored if the Almagests would come. I have already sent an official invitation to Rosengard by mail. It should arrive today. I know it's short notice, but I guarantee, they'll love the show!'

'I'm headed out to Rosengard now,' said Vincent, 'so I will speak to them about it. I'm sure you'll have quite an audience once you arrive at the Aerodrome anyway.'

Gustave chuckled again. 'We'll see, Vincent. Anyway, keep yourself out of trouble, won't you? I'll see you soon!'

And with that, Gustave hung up. Vincent replaced the phone on the receiver.

He turned around and saw Gadget standing by the bed. He was wearing a silk shirt with a deep v-neck and a form fitting grey jacket over the top. 'How do I look?'

Vincent simply growled. Gadget laughed and gathered his things. 'Back to Rosengard, then?'

'Yeah,' sighed Vincent.

'What's the matter?'

'Well, I enjoyed having you here so much...are you sure you don't want to stay?'

Gadget's eyes widened. 'You mean, live here? With you?'

Vincent nodded. 'Yeah, if you want.'

'I will think about it,' said Gadget. 'I still need to see Macey today anyway; she may have some answers for me. But...'

Gadget walked over to Vincent and sat on his knee. 'I did have a wonderful time last night. You can be sure of that.' He leaned forward and kissed Vincent softly.

Vincent's head was swimming. He was not looking forward to the talk they would have to have on the way to Rosengard. Vincent had decided it would be best to tell Gadget about tonight's incident before they arrived.

Aunt Catherine climbed down from her bedroom as soon as she heard the news, and immediately rushed to her nephew’s aid. She held tightly onto the young man’s hand as Alecia, Eva and Victoria Ann followed closely behind, watching him carefully. The trail of Fauntleroy's blood followed the group as they entered the Grand Hall, startling the handful of partygoers who had not yet evacuated. A head servant approached the group, informing them of their family's whereabouts.

Cathernie nodded, "Thank you, Stephen. Search every closet and cupboard in Rosengard. If you find anyone insist that they leave immediately!"

“Is Uncle Fonty going to be alright?” Victoria asked timidly.

Alecia shook her head, “He’s lost a lot of blood, Victoria. The best thing we can do is get him to the nearest medical center.”

“I’ll be alright Victoria,” Fonty said between heavy coughs, “Is everyone being evacuated?”

“Don’t worry about that right now, Fauntleroy,” Aunt Catherine replied, “Daedalus is the only one there. If anyone can take care of that bomb it’s going to be him.”

The group moved down the front steps of Rosengard, and began to board a larger carriage waiting along the road. One by one they entered the vehicle, save for Victoria Ann. Aunt Catherine let go of Fauntleroy’s hand, and turned towards her niece.

“Victoria Ann Almagest, get into the car right now!”

Defiantly, the young girl remained perfectly still with her arms crossed.

“You should go down there, Aunt Catherine!” Victoria Ann commanded, “You know way more about alchemy than Uncle Daedalus! You can disarm the bomb!”

“There’s no time to behave like this, young lady. The most important thing is to get your uncle out of here safely. Your mother has already left with the twins, and I promised her I'd take care of you.”

"I'm old enough to take care of myself!"

Fauntleroy raised his head slightly, “Please Victoria? You may be all grown up, but who is going to take care of me when I'm like this?”

“Fine…”

As Victoria Ann took a step towards the carriage she found herself crossing paths with Lady Bavaria and Morphia. The two Deacon women stared down at the young girl, both wearing identical looks of disdain across their face. Victoria Ann hopped into the carriage, attempting to slam the door shut behind her until Lady Bavaria poked her head inside.

“Catherine, is the boy alright?! Is everyone alright?”

Eva glared, “We’re in a hurry. As you can see this carriage we’re taking my brother to the nearest medical center.”

“And so am I, dear,” Lady Bavaria replied as she entered, her sister following closely behind, “You children may think a lot of things of me, but I am not without compassion. Despite your cruel assumptions I have a great deal of concern for each and every one of you....

Catherine tapped the glass separating her car from the driver, and in an instant the vehicle was in motion.

Morphia cringed at the sight of Fauntleroy's blood, "Who could have done such a thing?"

"It was an accident," Fauntleroy said, "I was at the wrong place at the wrong time, and I couldn't stop him..."

Eva kissed her brother tenderly on the forehead, "You were very brave, brother. Now save your strength..."

Alecia Ann pressed her blood-soaked bandages on Fauntleroy’s chest firmly. She let out a heavy sigh as she stared out the window towards Rosengard. The thought of losing her home was almost too terrible to imagine, let alone that of of losing another family member. She found herself lost in thought, only to be pulled away suddenly by Lady Bavaria's touch.

“I owe you and your husband an apology. If Alexander hadn‘t gone against my wishes it‘s likely nobody would have known about the boy until it was too late…”

"Now is not the time, Bavaria. We can discuss this later."

Lady Bavaria nodded in silent agreement as the carriage continued its' journey.
When his father had spoken up telling everyone to evacuate Rosengard, of all things Harrison would have never expected him to say that insurgents were targeting the home. For one thing, it made no sense to him, how could something like that happen? After all his father always made sure that there were security forces present during any large gathering at Rosengard. Even if it was more to break up any unruly behavior or to keep unwanted guests out, it should have been enough to prevent such a thing, shouldn't it?

His thoughts scattered as the guests began to leave but instead of following along he moved so that he was partially hidden behind one of the many sculptures in the room, waiting until most of the guests were gone. He started to move out to head for his father to see what was really going on when he over heard him talking to Beatriste and Harriet about a bomb in the wine-cellar. A bomb?! How in the world did someone manage to get a bomb into Rosengard?

He was so lost in thought at the inconceivable idea of something like that happening that he didn't notice when his father Daedalus left nor when his mother Harriet spied him and came over to firmly grab a hold of his right ear, causing him to yelp in surprise when she pulled him out from behind the sculpture.

"Harrison Almagest!" She said sharply as she let go of his ear and latched onto his right sleeve. "That will be enough of your lurking and not following your father's orders." She started dragging him along with her towards the main entrance to Rosengard.

"But Mom!" He started to protest only to have her turn and glare at him.

"No buts young man! You heard your father, it's far to dangerous for anyone to remain at Rosengard right now." She continued down the hallway, showing a surprising amount of strength as she practically dragged Harrison out the front doors.

Harrison could tell by the look in her eyes that there would be no discussion as to what he should do. What seemed like a million things ran through his mind at that moment, wondering if someone had told Victoria Ann and the others in the library, was it even possible for his father to stop a bomb. What if people didn't get out in time or his father failed?

As if sensing his thoughts Harriet tightened her grip but Harrison pulled free just the same. "I have to do something, I can't just leave!" Though what he could do, he wasn't sure of.

He apologized as he turned to leave, nearly running over Beatriste who had the younger children, Pearl and Bertram with her. As he entered the doors to the estate he heard Beatrise telling Harriet to stay put, at that point he started to run. Knowing full well that neither one of them would be able to catch him.

What's the matter with them? I'm old enough to make my own decisions!

It didn't take Harrison long to find the wine-cellars but to his utter surprise, no one was there, had he heard wrong? He was wondering what to do when he remembered that Leonhart had his own private stash. He turned and dashed back up the stairs and headed for the other cellar, pausing at the entrance when he realized that there was blood on the floor, leading out of the cellar. My god! What happened? He took off as quickly as possible down the stairs.

"There. Now take a look." It was Macey, what was she doing there?

"Did that take care of it?" It was Jack.

"I doubt it." Daedalus said. "There would be no point in using that technology if it were that simple to disarm it."

Harrison was so intent on what they were saying that he was at the bottom of the stairs before he realized it, too late to stop his momentum as he literally ran into his father from behind, causing him to stagger and then turn around to see what had just run into him.

?You children may think a lot of things of me, but I am not without compassion. Despite your cruel assumptions I have a great deal of concern for each and every one of you...."

Victoria Ann glared at Lady Bavaria as those words rang false in her mind. Who does she think she's fooling? She doesn't give a damn about anyone but herself! If she really cared... At that precise moment Bavaria's gaze caught Victoria's and without giving it another thought she spoke.

"You lie. You don't give a damn about anyone but yourself." She declared.

"Victoria! Now is not the time for that." Catherine attempted to hush her but Victoria looked at her Aunt with the very same expression she often used to remind a student of something important they were forgetting.

"There is always time for truth and I know what the word bastard means Auntie Catherine."

"Now you listen here..." Morphia started to say with irritation only to halt when Bavaria touched her on the arm, shaking her head.

"Victoria Ann... dear, what's truly important is seeing that Fauntleroy is taken care of," Bavaria said, keeping her voice as calm as her expression.

"Talking about it isn't hurting Uncle Fonty, after all it's not like it will slow the carriage down." She looked to Alecia who after looking at Catherine, reluctantly shook her head that it wouldn't affect things.

"If anything were to make us go quicker, it would have been if you and Morphia didn't come along." Eva spoke up, surprising the others. "Technically, your additional weight is slowing the carriage down." She smiled sweetly at the pair's sudden look of rage before it was swiftly hidden.

"Please everyone, we really should save this until after we get to the medical center." Alecia pleaded, attempting to get them to settle down.

"Not until Lady Bavaria tells me why she claims she cares and yet she's kicking out Henry. Even if he is illegitimate, he's still Grandfather's son." Victoria Ann ignored the shocked silence that descended on everyone.

"It's not like he choose who his father is!" She matched Bavaria's look of cold rage with her own youthful one of indignation. "You should be mad at Grandfather for having a mistress instead of taking it out on someone who is innocent!"

The silence in the carriage was deafening, just as the air of hostility between Bavaria, Morphia and Victoria Ann was overwhelming. They were saved from anyone saying anything further by Fauntleroy giving off the tiniest of laughs only to choke and cough a bit, grimacing in pain.

"Uncle Fonty!" Victoria Ann turned and reached out to grasp his hand tightly.

"It's alright Victoria," He said softly as the carriage finally pulled up before the medical center and Bavaria was out the door before the carriage had come to a proper halt.

Vincent and Gadget sat in the rear of Vincent’s luxurious steamcar. His previous car had been destroyed almost beyond recognition by the recent attack, so the Royal Police Guard had issued him with a replacement vehicle. It was a newer model and had been updated with a thicker metal skin in a vain attempt to make it more secure.

The streets of High Czenoble were bathed in golden light from overhanging street lamps and although some people were still out enjoying the nightlife, most had returned home to the comfort of their beds. Vincent felt bad for falling asleep with Gadget; he didn’t intend to return him to Rosengard so late – and certainly not under these circumstances.

‘I don’t know if Macey will have much to tell you about your condition tonight,’ said Vincent. ‘She will be investing all her energy on trying to diffuse the bomb.’

Gadget sighed. ‘That’s understandable. But if that’s the case, why are we headed back to Rosengard so late?’

‘Well,’ Vincent turned to look at Gadget, ‘for one thing, I promised Macey I’d have you back tonight in one piece. I didn’t want to break that promise. She still wants to see you. If this bomb can be dealt with tonight and without further hassle, I’m sure she will stay up a little while longer to tell you if she has discovered anything. Secondly, I have a job to do; I need to be there. This has become a matter for senior representatives of the Guard and I’m the logical choice. I need to see the crime scene and we need to start making security plans for Rosengard.’

Gadget looked to be in deep thought for a moment. ‘Rosengard isn’t safe. Maybe it’s better if I do stay with you after all.’

Vincent smiled. ‘When the Guard come in, Rosengard will be safe. I promise. You can stay with me if you want, but it’s up to you. Have a think about it.’

Gadget simply grinned and looked out the window at the passing buildings. Vincent wondered what he was thinking at that moment. Would he really want to live with an older lover? Would he be happy to settle like that? Vincent had many questions in the back of his mind and he wondered where life was taking him. At the very least, he knew that things would change dramatically for him sooner rather than later.

As the car pulled up to Rosengard’s front gate (which was open, oddly enough), Vincent immediately noticed a large group of heavy steamcars lining the road. These cars were unmistakable; they carried the RPG logo on their sides and were somewhat like small, squat trucks. They each carried a small deployment of Guard officers. The officers were milling around the street out the front of the estate.

Vincent and Gadget stepped out of the car and approached the gate. Vincent saw a man he recognized; it was Lieutenant Connel. He was a man with wide shoulders and a thick neck – a true military man, loyal only to Gaul Rosier. Although Vincent didn’t much like him, they still got along quite well.

He had already spotted Vincent. ‘Sir!’ he shouted, with a wave of his hand. ‘Sir, what are you doing here at this time of night?’

Vincent scowled. ‘You should salute when you are in the presence of a commanding officer, Lieutenant.’

A large bead of sweat rolled down Connel’s forehead. ‘Oh, sorry Sir.’ He promptly saluted Vincent. ‘If you beg my pardon, Sir, we were not told that you would be arriving tonight.’

‘Understandable,’ said Vincent. ‘Can you tell me why you are here?’

‘Direct orders from Commander Rosier, Sir,’ said Connel. ‘This is now a high security zone. Commander Rosier has instructed us to patrol the perimeter of Rosengard Estate twenty-four hours per day. We must not allow undesirables to pass this point, Sir.’

Vincent rubbed his chin thoughtfully. ‘I see. I will speak with you again soon, Lieutenant.’

Connel nodded and saluted once again. He stood to one side and allowed Vincent and Gadget to pass through Rosengard’s entry gate.

Given that the Guard deployment had only just arrived, it was likely that the Almagests did not yet know about these new security measures. Vincent thought it best to tell Daedalus as soon as possible.

All the breath exited Daedalus' lungs in a single gust as he felt the impact against his lower back. Thankfully his hands were a few inches away from the bomb, ready to being disabling it's electrical and chemical components, rather than actually inside. If they were, he was quite certain they would all now be dead. Inhaling slowly, he turned to see the source of the blow and locked eyes with his youngest child.

"Oh gods... Harrison what're you doing here ?"

He'd wanted to shout at the boy, smack him across the head with his hand for his stupidity. But all his managed was one short, fearful question. The fool ! Daedalus had wanted them all out of Rosengard for their own protection, even Macey and Jack staying hadn't be planned, and now Harrison ! Silently he cursed himself, if his survived this, Harriet was going to kill him.

Harrison hadn't moved, his gaze fixed on the strange explosive device his father and Macey were working to diffuse. He's never seen, or even heard of anything like it. The metallic tang of the blood on the floor caused his face to pale slightly, drawing an even great look of concern from his already worried father.

"I... I'm here to help you father !!"

The old man was surprised his son's courage, although not entirely grateful in this case. Daedalus supposed he should have expected it, if the old man was willing to sacrifice his own life to try and disable the explosive, then why should he son by any different ? He half wished Dwalish had been at the wake, even though his eldest son was considerably more morose than Harrison, he cared for his little brother deeply, although that probably would have meant Daedalus would have had both his sons in the cellar as opposed to neither of them.

He turned his attention to Jack, who'd been watching wordlessly.

"Jack."

"Yeah Daedalus ?"

"If I give the word... take Harrison and Macey, and get out of the house as fast as you can."

He heard a multitude of objections from his kin, but silenced them with a raised hand, continuing to stare at Jack expectantly.

"Alright, you've got my word."

"Thanks... And Jack ?"

"Yeah ?"

"Sorry about that shot earlier."

"Yeah."

Pulling a strange looking helmet from inside his kit bag, Daedalus placed it over his face and began to tighten the straps to secure it against his head. Coupled with the protective gear he'd donned, Harrison thought it gave his father and entirely mechanical appearance, as it covered over his face entirely. Flicking a switch on the side, a single luminous beam of white light struck out from the forehead of the helmet, giving the strangely organic bomb a new ethereal glow.

"OK, I'm going to start by draining some of the external chemical liquids. I'm hoping that they're intended to magnify the extent of the explosion. After that, I'm going to start with the electronics."

"Be careful Uncle, there may be some more biological components the closer you get to the core."

Macey's voice was full of concern, he didn't want to worry her, but he reflected, he needed her expertise.

"If I see something I'm not sure how to deal with, I'll leave it to you."

Removing a large syringe from within the kit, his positioned his hands nearest to the closest of the glass chemical cylinders. Before aiming the type at a the small rubber tubing which would feed the liquid within into the bomb. Holding his breath, he pricked through the material and began to wind back the syringe. Daedalus watched with some relief as a dark purple liquid began to fill into the syringe.

Immediately his mind worked to identify the chemical compound, it's purple colour already gave him so idea, and removing a small clear liquid filled tube from a case in his kit, he emptied the contents into the now open syringe capsule. With a sigh of relief, he watched as the colour change as the new compound became inert.

"One down. Five to go."

Several minutes later, Daedalus lay the last of the inert capsules down into the case and returned it to the kit. He estimated he'd managed to limit the size of the explosion to the point where it would no longer leave Rosengard a pile of rubble, though it would still kill everyone in the wine cellar if it went off.

"I'm going for the core. Macey, I need you now."

He didn't even move his head as she drew over to him and bent over the bomb. He'd removed two additional trip wires and most of the bomb's outer-coating, leaving it accessible from multiple sides. His niece had already removed a rather wicked looking curved blade and a set of forceps from his equipment pack and was kneeling next to him. As she glanced over his work, a small smile came to her porcelain features.

"We're very close."

With surgical precision she removed a layer of outer membrane from the core, he marvelled at her skill with the biological, it rivalled that of his late mother. Increasing his own magnification by rotating an addition glass lens in front of the visor of the helmet, he examined the newly exposed centre of the bomb. Unlike the rest of the bomb, the core was almost purely mechanical. A pair of small flares, no doubt used to set off the gunpowder and then the rest of the bomb were strategically located beneath the main trigger... it meant he would have to disable the entire trigger before attempting to disable the flares.

"Macey, I can handle the rest, please go back and guard Harrison."

She knew better than to argue with him when he was asked her to protect his son. Silently she stood back up and scrubbed again some of the stray blood splatters on her face. Daedalus listened as her footfalls became gradually fainter, but never left his range of hearing.

"OK Dae, last call."

The trigger was comparatively rudimentary compared to the rest of the bomb, in his own lab, he could whip up something similar in only a few minutes. He supposed though the Underdogs had not expected that it would be Daedalus himself would attempt to disable the weapon, and even if he did, that Macey would not be with him. Within a few moments he had managed to take apart the piece of tech, even though it's timer was now non-operational, there was still a risk it could explode.

Reaching back into his kit, he removed a small tub of cream coloured gel, removing one of his blast gloves, he wiped his fingers into the container and began to slowly smear the contents over the flares. Within a few moments, the chemicals inside the cream would seep through into the explosive powder of the flares, soaking it and preventing it from exploding... He couldn't believe it, after all that, all his fear it was done. Undoing the straps of his helmet, Daedalus pulled it free from his face and set it down next to him. Sweat lines covered his face, wiping his forehead with his sleeve, he turned to the others

"...It's done."

He could see the pride in his son's eyes, watching his father save everyone. It felt as though all the stress had just melted away. Grinning broadly, he watched as Harrison dashed forward with his arms open to hug his father... It was only then he heard the gentle ticking...

The next few seconds were a blur. Daedalus could recall running forward and grabbing Harrison as the blast hit him and he was pitched forward towards the solid stone walls of the cellar. Macey screamed at the impact and rushed over. Harrison lay white in his father's arms but was otherwise uninjured, somehow his father had managed to turn in the air to take the impact. Her uncle lay there, slumped and unmoving, blood covering over his silver hair and wrinkled brow. Harrison's eyes fluttered open, his voice weak.

"Dad ?

No answer.

"Dad ?!"
Harrison tried to turn over his father by himself, when Jack reached over and helped. He leaned over to listen for a heartbeat, when Macey gently nudged him aside. Everyone's ears were ringing from the explosion, but she still tried to speak and make herself heard. Perhaps the words came out too loudly, but she couldn't even hear Vincent coming down the stairs.

"Let me. It's my specialty after all."

Jack coughed in the background, as Macey leaned forward slightly, and placed one bare hand against her beloved uncle's chest. Harrison's face was closed and unreadable, as Macey's expression darkened. Her fingers could feel his heartbeat, slow and dull compared to Harrison's or her own. And in her mind she could see the disease eating away at him. Then, with a flash of insight, she put her fingers against his chest again, and this time closed her eyes and added her other hand, the dried blood caking on her forehead.

"Daedalus? Are you down here?"

Vincent stepped into the wine cellar, and the first thing he saw was his former wife bent over her uncle, her hands over his heart. All at once, he saw the blood and the ruined, burnt out bomb, and would've said something, when Jack stood and walked over to where he stood, unwilling to stay so close to Macey. Harrison's face looked drawn and expressionless, and he seemed to barely breathe.

"I can feel his heartbeat. It almost seems normal. But for his other injuries, they should be a concussion and general trauma from the explosion."

And then she caught it. The slight fluttering of his arteries, an irregularity, that spelled his death. The next thing everyone knew, Macey's eyes had opened wide, her hands had jerked back from his chest and a sob burst from her throat like a shout. Then she buried her face in her hands and keened, howling with grief and rage. Harrison saw her face, and though every part of him wanted to react the same, he didn't. Instead he stood and walked over to Jack and Vincent. His voice calm and measured, even though it cost him dearly.

"Please help me take my father upstairs. He needs medical attention."

"Of course. We'll go now."

Jack slowly lifted Daedalus up, and with the help of several of the guards, carried him up the stairs and towards the front gate. Harrison went with them, leaving Macey in the cellar, knowing she was beyond anyone's voice. Vincent waited a few beats until she'd stopped screaming, then bent down and lifted her to her feet. He didn't mind the streaks of blood staining his uniform, or the tears that were streaking down her face, turning the dried blood back to liquid. Unconsciously, Macey put her arms around him and sobbed into his chest, while he slowly led her back up the stairs. And in between gasps for air, he heard her.

"He's dying."

Vincent didn't say anything at first, simply let her express her sadness, knowing full well that he could do nothing at all. At the stop of the stairs, it seemed she'd almost completely gotten a hold of herself. And she pulled away from him, thankful, but at the same time, almost reluctant. Her expression iced itself over, and Vincent knew she was swallowing down her pain. She'd done it dozens of times after they'd separated, and she was doing it now. It was the only way she could function.

"First the disease, and now this. He won't be here for long."

Alexander was feeling more than just a little bit tired once everyone other than Daedalus and a select few had been evacuated from Rosengard. Once he had made sure those who could deal with the bomb were notified, he had moved to do what he could, helping with double checking the estate to make sure everyone was gotten out. He had barely finished that and was debating on joining Alecia and the others at the medical center when more of the Royal Police Guard showed up, something that considering what was going on did not surprise him. What did surprise him when he went to greet them, was when his own superior officer Jonathan Grants crawled out of the closest car and immediately moved to intercept him.

"Alexander, there you are!" He grasped his shoulder and steered him towards the gates, away from the estate. "Commander Rosier has instructed us to patrol the perimeter of Rosengard from now on to prevent something like this from ever happening again. Now give me the details, I'll need them for Lieutenant Connel over there."

Alexander turned to look briefly at the Lieutenant who nodded and then back at Jonathan who was still heading towards the exit. "Wouldn't it be better if we stay close to the others?"

"You misunderstand, considering what happened, it's best if the details are kept to a select few to keep the investigation from being compromised. I'm following Lieutenant Connel's orders to debrief you out of hearing range of the other men."

"But that would mean..." Alexander trailed off, surely he wasn't implying what he thought he was. How was that even possible? It was hard to imagine that anyone would willingly help someone who had no qualms about killing innocent people just to make a point.

"Yes it would, it's more than a rumor that there are those within the Royal Police Guard who support The Underdogs attempts to bring about a revolution." He steered Alexander into a nearby shed on the outer edge of the estate, one that was carefully concealed by tall dark bushes.

"What are you saying?" Alexander started to get angry. "Are you trying to tell me that someone in the guard knew what was going to happen and did nothing to stop it?"

"No Alexander, now before we go any further tell me exactly what happened." He gave Alexander a stern look when he started to object and then as if sensing that Jonathan would say nothing until he recanted the nights events, he settled down and went back to the beginning, to when he had come to Rosengard to look for Alecia.

It took far longer than Alexander would have thought as Jonathan constantly asked him questions, pressing for details. After what seemed like hours but was probably no more than a single hour he was finally satisfied that he had gotten everything from Alexander that he knew.

"Excellent work Alexander," He said once they were done. "Now about what we were talking about earlier, why do you think someone would support a group like The Underdogs?"

"I have no idea sir." Alexander replied, unwilling to answer the question.

"Oh come now Alexander, you're from New Czenoble, you know what the living conditions are like for most of the population there. Even your own family does nothing more than manage to care for themselves."

Alexander turned a bit red. "My family does well enough, they have a home they..."

"They deserve far better than wages that make it next to impossible for them to have their own place like you and Alecia do. You know as well as I do that when your older brothers finally marry they, like most of the few in New Czenoble who manage to scrape by, will live with your parents since the wages there are deplorable."

Alexander stiffened. "What are you trying to say sir? What has my family got to do with any of this?"

Jonathan sighed as if it should have been obvious. "My point son, is that even those like your family who work hard, are still barely able to get by. You've no idea just how much money lines the pockets of the rich when it's a matter of greed and lack of concern for one's fellowman, instead of an honest profit."

He grabbed Alexander's shoulders tightly, "What I am saying is that your family is one of the few who even manages to get by and even then, only just! There's no medical treatment for the less fortunate, there's starvation and deplorable conditions everywhere you turn in that pathetic excuse for a city!"

"I know that!" Alexander exclaimed as he shrugged free of Jonathan's grasp, looking to the side. "Why do you think I study law on the side? Everyone should have equal rights."

"Exactly. Which is what makes you so perfect."

"Perfect? For what?" Alexander turned back to look at him wondering just what in the world he was talking about.

"I would have thought that by now it was obvious as to what I am saying here." Jonathan said softly.

Alexander looked at him for a moment, confused as to what he was saying and then he took a step back, his eyes going wide as he realized what he meant. He opened his mouth to say something only to find that he was speechless. Oh gods, tell me I'm dreaming! Is he out of his mind? He tried to respond again and failed, too shocked at what his own superior officer was saying.

"Your talents are wasted here Alexander, you of all people understand what The Underdogs are trying to do. How they are trying to put an end to the tyranny of the Dynast government."

"Oh hell!" Alexander moaned, "Please tell me this is some kind of sick joke." His look pleaded with his superior but it was clear that he was not joking. "How can you even ask me this? Especially at a time like this!"

"There is no good time for something like this."

"How can you possible expect me to answer something like that? What makes you think I won't turn you in?" Alexander shook with anger. "Your so-called caring group tried to kill both me and my wife. Do you really think I'd want anything to do with something like that?" He backed away a bit. "You're out of your mind!"

Alexander jumped when Jonathan grabbed him by the shoulders again. "No, I know you better than that, all I ask is that you think about what I said. This needs to stop. People like Lady Bavaria and those of the Dynast government who don't give a damn that their lavish lifestyle comes from treating other human beings like animals are the ones who are out of their minds."

He let go and stepped back. "Think about it, you know I'm right." And with that he turned and left the shed, leaving Alexander standing there, his thoughts running in circles as he wondered what in the world he was going to do about what had just happened.

Several Guard members entered the Great Hall with a rusty-looking stretcher. Luckily they carried various medical equipment within their steamtrucks just in case any officers required assistance in the field.

'This is exactly why we need to be here,' remarked Lieutenant Connel as he watched several officers delicately lay Daedalus onto the stretcher. One of the officers was a field paramedic; he fitted a small breathing apparatus to Daedalus's face. It emitted soft puffs of steam as a small clockwork gear churned nearby.

'It's a shame you weren't here earlier,' said Vincent without looking at Connel. 'Nevertheless, you're here now and Daedalus is badly injured. You're to take him to the Royal Czenovia hospital at once.'

'What about our perimeter at Rosengard?' Connel seemed almost confused by Vincent's order.

'What about it?' retorted Vincent. 'You can leave a handful of officers here. The damage has been done; when you take Daedalus I want you to make sure you have a fully armed escort with you. He must not face any danger in transit.'

'But--'

Vincent flashed a dark glance at Connel. 'Do not question my orders, Lieutenant. If Daedalus passes away before reaching the hospital, I will hold you personally responsible. So will Commander Rosier. You don't want to be responsible for the death of one of the greatest figures in this country, do you?'

Connel paused for a moment and then saluted. 'Of course not, Sir!' And with that, he ushered the officers out of the hall.

'Thank you.'

Vincent heard a soft, familiar voice from behind him. It was Catherine. She looked exhausted.

'Vincent,' she put her hand on his arm. 'I am glad you came back. I don't know what we would have done if...'

'No,' Vincent shook his head. 'Don't even entertain that thought, my lady. Daedalus is in good hands now, believe it or not. And the Royal Czenovia is the best hospital in this country; I am sure he will be fine. We will sort this out.'

Catherine simply nodded. She was such a strong woman, thought Vincent. She was obviously shaken, but did not shed a tear.

Vincent wondered how he was going to invite the Almagests to the Chimaera Cup after yet another tragedy. On the other hand, it might be enough to get their minds off the situation, even if only for a couple of hours.

Alecia was beyond tired as her and Alexander finally made their way home with Victoria Ann and Harrison in tow. The whole evening seemed like nothing more than a horrible nightmare in spite of all that had happened. First the incident with Bavaria, then Fauntleroy being shot and then Daedalus being injured while defusing the bomb. She hadn't even realized how late it was getting until Alexander had finally shown up at the medical center, looking worn and out of sorts.

The whole affair hadn't been helped by the overly hostile air between some of the family members and the Deacons, something that even though they were at the medical center couldn't seem to be left behind. It had finally reached the point where Alecia had snapped again and ordered everyone out of the rooms where both Fauntleroy and Daedalus were being kept. Overriding any objections on the grounds that the patients health and much needed rest was more important.

It was actually a policy that the centers were considering adopting, a window at night were visitors were not allowed in order to ensure that patients could rest without being disturbed by visitors. It wasn't like they couldn't wait in one of the many waiting rooms until later. Catherine had decided earlier to head back to Rosengard and since Alecia was uncertain as to whether or not she would return to the medical center that night, she took both Victoria Ann and Harrison who had spent his time there saying next to nothing and took them both home with her and Alexander.

She looked over and smiled at Alexander who was carrying Victoria Ann in a piggy back fashion since she had fallen asleep earlier. It didn't take her long to open the door to their home and take both of the children to one of the lower guest rooms. Alexander set Victoria Ann down on the bed in the first guest room before steering Harrison towards the next room. Once they were gone Alecia turned to Victoria who was half awake after being put down.

"Alecia?" She said sleepily as Alecia helped her out of her outfit and pull on a nightgown. "Is everyone going to be okay?" She closed her eyes as Alecia finished by tucking her in under the covers.

"Yes, everyone is going to be alright." Alecia said kindly. "Now get some sleep, we'll go and visit them tomorrow morning alright?"

"Okay." Victoria Ann mumbled before drifting off.

Alecia left the room, turning the lights out before she closed the door and headed towards the other room where Alexander was seeing to Harrison. She was almost there when Alexander exited the room.

"I think you should talk to him." He said. "I'm concerned that he's so quiet and withdrawn. Harrison is behaving as if he's in shock."

"He probably is," Alecia said softly. "Why don't you go and take a moment to let the housekeeper know that we have additional guests while I check on him." She smiled when Alexander agreed and left to do just that.

Alecia waited until he was gone to knock softly on the door where Harrison was, after getting no reply she finally opened it a bit to see that he was curled up on his side, staring at the wall.

"Harrison, may I come in?" But other than to look at her briefly he said nothing. She took the initiative, closing the door behind her and then taking a seat on the bed next to Harrison who sat up when she approached.

"Can't sleep?" She asked not really expecting much of an answer. "There's no need to worry so much. Your father was responding well to the treatments. I believe that he's going to recover just fine."

"It's my fault." His voice was barely audible as he looked down at his hands, refusing to look at Alecia.

"Harrison... Of course it's not your fault." Alecia tried to reassure him, but Harrison just hunched over and moved to get back under the covers, refusing to meet her gaze. Alecia didn't let him, grabbing him and pulling him into a tight hug, ignoring his struggles until he finally stopped.

"Yes it is, he got hurt protecting me from the blast." He finally said, his voice choking on the memory. "If I hadn't been there he wouldn't have gotten hurt."

"Harrison," Alecia said as she held him tighter while he shook with the effort to not cry. "The only one at fault is the person who placed the bomb there in the first place, never forget that." But Harrison did not answer her causing Alecia to choke a bit herself as she realized just how much he was blaming himself for what happened.

She made a mental note to herself to talk to Harriet the first chance she got. If anyone could help Harrison understand it would be her. Even if he had been foolish by attempting to go back and help his father, it didn't change the fact that in the end, the person who had shot Fauntleroy and placed the bomb to begin with, was responsible.

Alecia didn't know how long she simply held him until he finally stopped shaking and Alexander returned to help her tuck him back into bed as he had finally fallen asleep. What a mess. She thought as she turned the lights out and closed the door. She leaned into Alexander who put his arm around her shoulders as they made for their own bedroom, though she wondered if she'd be able to get any sleep.

The bomb had been taken care of but at what cost? Did this mean that she was going to lose her other brother as well? A heavy weight settled on Catherine's heart, making her feel like collapsing and giving up and only her sense of duty to the family kept her from doing so. Catherine was debating what to do next when movement caught her eyes as Jack came back over to where she was standing with Vincent, his look questioning.

"Where's Macey?" He asked up on looking around and not seeing her.

Vincent looked a little uncomfortable as if realizing for the first time that she had not followed him outside, "She's still inside I believe." He finally replied.

"What's that little fool thinking? She needs to go and get checked at the medical center as well." Jack exclaimed, he looked to Vincent. "What the hell were you thinking? Leaving her back there in that state?"

Catherine started to say something only to halt when Jack stalked off into Rosengard and return with a clearly dazed and upset Macey. Catherine couldn't help but give off a startled gasp at the sight of blood splattered all over her clothing. Catherine couldn't know that it was from the bomb and not someone else. With a start she hurried over to her side.

"Macey! Good heavens child! Are you alright dear?" She grabbed her hand in her own, noticing how Macey's hands were icy cold to the touch.

"Vincent!" Catherine turned to see that he was already anticipating her by getting one of the remaining Guard cars to pull over to take them to the Medical Center immediately.

"I'm fine Aunt Catherine, I'm not the one who's hurt." Macey said a bit dully.

"Why don't we let the medical staff be the judge of that dear." Catherine said kindly as Jack helped her into the back seat of the car before Catherine climbed in with her. Macey tried to protest, but it was clear she was too tired to really do so.

"I need to check on my assistant," Macey protested weakly as Vincent moved to close the door to the car.

"There's no need to worry, I'll make sure he's taken care of." Vincent assured her. "Catherine is right, please go and get yourself tended to."

Macey looked at everyone who was watching her, obviously concerned as to her health and then finally nodded in agreement. Vincent closed the car door and with a quick order they were off, heading for the same medical center where Daedalus and Fauntleroy were being taken care of.

Gadget was horrified to hear what had happened in Rosengard. If something was to happen to Macey, he wouldn't know what to do. He could now manage a much longer time without an injection, but he still needed Macey's help to survive.

Vincent told Gadget to stay put on the front yard of the mansion, but when Vincent didn't return for a while, Gadget followed him. Coincidentally, he went upstairs to search for Macey and Vincent, so he missed them both as they went outside.

When he returned downstairs, he saw smoke billowing from the basement. Covering his mouth, he went down to see the damage caused by the bomb. He crouched on the floor of the corridor to avoid the smoke, but his eyes caught a piece of paper lying on the floor. It was a bit charred, but still readable.

Who could've left such a note? The poem was mystifying, but Gadget was sure that Vincent could solve it. Or Macey. They both were much smarter than he was, anyway.

But Gadget was smart enough to know that the bomb couldn't have appeared to the wine cellar all by itself. And since no one could have smuggled it through the house filled with servants and guests, it must've been brought in from below the ground.

Gadget smiled by himself. Spending time with a police guard seemed to have an effect on him.

Although she had protested the very idea of going to a hospital of any kind, halfway through the trip there, she abruptly fell asleep on Lady Catharine's shoulder. Like she'd been hit on the head she was gone, dead to the world, and in fact she didn't even wake up when the orderlies helped her into a quiet room. Lady Catharine exchanged a few brief words with the attending nurse and then sat herself down firmly next to Macey, holding her hand at moments.

Several minutes later, Macey's eyes flickered, and she opened them to stare up at the starkly white ceiling. Normally she wouldn't have come around, but the bed had felt strange, and there she was. She turned her head and saw Lady Catharine resting in the hardback chair, her head tilted back slightly. Another of her servants was sitting in a corner, a satchel of Macey's things and Fonty''s camera resting next to it. She was completely asleep herself, snoring just a tiny bit. And with a little movement, she noticed her left arm was hooked up to an IV drip. She sighed and looked back to the woman she saw as mother.

"Aunt Catharine?"

"Yes dear?"

She blinked a few times, as if to awaken herself. Macey put on a rather accurate concerned expression; even though for some reason her thoughts felt fuzzy and unfocused.

"You should go on home. It's so late right now."

"Oh is it? I had hardly noticed."

"You should be in a comfortable bed. Not that this one is, but-"

The attending doctor came bustling in at that point, holding a notebook with loose sheafs of papers fluttering around, bringing with him a veritable cloud of madness. Macey turned a bit and looked at the man, her dislike of being in the hospital suddenly intensifying. He flipped through a few charts, examined her pupils briskly, and then marked some things down.

"How are you feeling Miss Almagest?"

"Like a hundred miles of bad cliche."

".....anything more specific?"

"Well, let's see. I have a mild concussion from being in an explosion as well as several small lacerations and until recently was covered in components from said explosive and now I'm getting asked questions by a doctor that clearly shouldn't have been graduated from his school."

The doctor's eyes narrowed, but were instantly countered by a sharp look from Macey herself. He backed down immediately, and slunk through the door, mildly subdued. Macey heaved a sigh of relief while her servant snickered in the corner. Lady Catharine chuckled to herself and gave Macey a gentle kiss on the forehead before heading out the door for home.

Once she'd left, Macey leapt up out of bed and jerked out her IV lines. With the servant's help, she picked up her brother's camera and consulted the charts outside to find him. Several turns left and right, and she found his room. Somewhat pale, but breathing quite well, he looked better than she'd expected and slipped into his room. He came awake almost at once at her entrance and she set down his camera by the side of his bed, sinking into a nearby chair with a bump and a sigh.

"My tests didn't reveal anything out of the ordinary. I'm sorry Fonty."

"Oh it's alright Macey. How're you feeling?"

"Kinda muzzy. My head feels like it's been soaked in custard and held over an open flame."

"That's not too bad. At least you didn't have bullets in you."

Morphia Markham sat anxiously in the waiting room of Eshe Rehema, The Royal Czenovian Hospital of High Czenoble. It had been a long, tiring day for everyone, yet none moreso than her own sister. Bavaria had wrapped herself in her shawl and fallen asleep in sitting up, leaning gently on Morphia’s shoulder. Many of the Almagests had long since left for the night, hoping to catch some rest, yet it was the Deacons who remained. Still, her thoughts continued to drift as she sat there, thinking of Henry’s betrayal and her own strange encounter with the Prince Augustus. For a young many rumored to be ‘disabled’ he certainly seemed quite normal to her.

Suddenly Nellie burst into the hospital, still wearing her officer’s uniform. Several young guards immediately saluted the woman as she passed by, rushing to the front desk.

“My name is Helen Almagest!” she shouted as she slammed her fist on the counter, “Do you have any word of my father’s condition?”

“Almagest, Almagest…“ The elderly nurse slowly shook her head as she thumbed through a stack of folders, “Who did you say you were here for, miss? We seem to have several tonight.“

Morphia rose to her feet, “Nellie. Daedalus is still unconscious from the blast. There hasn’t been any change in his condition for hours.”

“That can’t be true! My father was an expert in demolitions, there is no way he would have injured himself so much…” Helen turned towards Morphia, clearly enraged, “And on the day of his brother’s funeral, no less! Has all of Czenovia gone mad?”

“It’s much worse than that, Helen…” Morphia replied, “It would seem that all of Czenovia has finally come to their senses.”

The Underground

It was the next morning when Charles entered the High Czenoble train station with a look of concern across his face. Only a few days earlier New Czenoble was in flames, and after that one of the train stations had come under attack. Now with the latest word coming out of Rosengard it seemed as if nowhere was safe for him and his children. As he stared at the large assortment of armed officers inspecting every passenger, train and package it seemed as if the Dynast government felt the same way too.

“Papers, sir!” A heavyset guard said, brandishing a rifle in his arms, “We cannot allow anyone to move any further without proof of identification.”

Charles reached into his coat and withdrew a small paper carrying the seal of the Royal Transport Authority. The guard stared at it for a moment before responding.

“It says here that you’re an Almagest...”

Charles raised an eyebrow in suspicion, “That‘s right. My wife was an Almagest…”

“Then I’m afraid I can’t allow you to operate your train today,” the man said, “Given your lineage you may be considered a high priority target. Your presence would endanger the lives of everyone on board.”

“You can’t be serious. I‘ve been operating this train for--!”

“I’m going to have to ask you to leave, sir! You’ll be contacted by your supervisor when and if you are able to work again. Given the crowds we're expecting for the races today, it‘s much too risky to have you out while Donner and Blair Stark are on the loose.”

“Donner and who?”

The guard pointed Charles towards one of the support columns, virtually wallpapered with various posters and writings.

Landmark 07
“I thought you were an Almagest!” The guard laughed, “Donner and Blair are the most wanted criminals in Czenovia, and it looks like they’re after you!”

Macey Ellen Almagest was discharged from the hospital early in the morning, as early as she could browbeat the incompetent twit "treating" her to. She stopped by Fonty's room to find him in high good humor, flirting with the handsome young doctor treating him. Then she paused at Daedalus's room, finding a stately older nurse checking his vitals. She slipped in the door quietly and held her Uncle's huge calloused hand for a moment, then kissed his forehead and slipped back out before anyone paused to tell her there were no visitor's allowed.

The carriage ride back to Rosengard was brief and peaceful, what with the lack of any other passengers besides her servant, who knew when to blather blithely and when to just enjoy the sound of nothing at all. Once she crossed the threshold, she made her way to her room to find it just as she'd left it. The other servants had returned her effects and locked up the cupboards and dresser drawers appropriately. A quick bath and a fluffy towel later, Macey was reading the morning papers over a cup of cambric tea while her servant combed out her hair and pinned it up in a gently curling bun.

"What do you think of these Underdogs Mell darling?"

"I think they're a bunch of scummy bastards. Shooting Mr. Fonty, planting a bomb in our wine cellar!"

"I quite agree with you. Ends don't justify the means right?"

"'Course not! They're a lot of dodgy slimy creatures if you asks me."

Macey nodded sagely while her servant continued to manipulate her hair, pinning it here and there, letting a stray lock curl lightly down her neck. Eventually she stood to the sound of carriage doors and windows closing and opening and slamming shut again. Then the sound of Victoria Ann shouting and running down the halls. Then she burst into Macey's room like there were people chasing her and bounded up onto her bed.

"My goodness Victoria dear. Where's the fire?"

Victoria's brow furrowed for a moment, as if seriously considering the question, when Macey chuckled and began dressing in a light cream colored skirt and jacket, while Victoria buttoned up the basque from the back, chattering away like her tongue would fall off if she paused. Shockingly, the child managed to tug her corset strings just right, tying them off with deft quick movements, nimbly tying the ribbons on the sides and helping her slip into the light jacket. While the child spoke, Macey sat down and began to apply a very light coat of makeup, some of it hiding the minor scratches and abrasions from the explosions.

"They told me that you and Eva were going to take me and Harrison to the races! But Harrison says he doesn't want to go, even though I yelled at him and said that Uncle Daedalus would've wanted him to escort you for the honor of the thing and then he said that I was being annoying and then I said-"

During this verbal cacophony, Macey found it extremely difficult to keep a straight face. Something about how Daedalus would be just fine, something about how Lady Bavaria was an icky snot, and then Victoria launched into a discussion of how nice Alecia was. This went on for several minutes while Macey nodded sagely and sipped her tea, offering Victoria a biscuit every now and then. She hooked up her boots, the heels slightly higher than they would've been for any other function. Finally when Victoria paused for breath, she turned and found Harrison standing at the doorway with a melancholy expression on his face.

"You were right I guess. I should go. He would've wanted me to."

"Well I'm not going to twist your arm over it. But afterwards you can go back and tell him all about it I'm sure. And please cheer up a little, this isn't a lynching after all."

Harrison nodded dully, as if he wasn't even hearing her, and Victoria flounced off in a fit of girlish exuberance and went downstairs to find anyone else to talk to. Macey stood carefully, and slipped on her gloves, plucking a small curled snowdrop from a spray of fresh flowers from the vase on her desk. Harrison nearly puffed out his chest, and she slipped it into his lapel with a certain amount of élan. He held out his arm, looking older than his years. Both sad, but stately, and escorted her down the hall with the light train of her skirt sweeping behind.

How is this even possible? Charles asked himself as he headed back home. The previous day's funeral wear in complete dissarray. Not that it had been really nice anyway. (working on the railroad couldn't have done any more damage than it already had) Has Czenoble alwasy been like this or have I just been too good to notice?

Charles felt like everything was going in the exact opposite direction. He came home to attend Leonhart's birthday and somehow, Rosengard and everyone in it became determined not to let him leave; Czenoble was like a prison to him. "And I'm not even a Almagest anymore." Charles chuckled to himself.

He thought about his children. About Fauntleroy, Macey, and Daedalus. But for some reason, his lonely walk to the hospital only rendered more thaughts of the night before. The night when he should have been at Rosengard protecting his children. The night he spent with her instead.

~~~~~
"So tell me why you've returned to Czenoble?" she had asked.
She poured charles some wine to make the night pass quicker. Charles rambled off some quick and awkward reply. He told her it was because of Bertram and Pearl, but neither of them believed it. It's not that Charles didn't love either of them. It was just that he saw too much of theri mother in them that it hurt. It certainly wasn't to actually see Leonhart or the rest of the 'family' although their hospitality was certainly welcome.
"Why did you come with me?" she asked, "Why did you so willingly follow me to my home?"
Charles was once agian, unable to answer truthfully, and too nervous to make up a lie. He opted to take another drink of wine.
She leaned closer. Her hand now rest gently on his knee. Her head almost completely laid on his shoulder, as if testing to make sure that Charles didn't pull away. He was too stunned to even think of it.
"Please Charles," she spoke again after some time, "Don't run away again. Tell me the truth. Let yourself hear the truth." She moved her hand onto his cheek, forcing Charles to look directly at her.
He sighed for lack of words, feeling some sort of mental break on the verge. Tears were building in his eyes and then finally, "It's you," he answered, "You're the reason, Meredyne"
She came close and kissed him softly on the lips after wiping the tears from his eyes.
~~~~~

The rest of the night was a blur. Charles assumed it was from the wine, or maybe he was just caught up in the moment. But no matter how happy - or lustful - Charles had been the night before, they seemed to work conversely for him this morning, and her certainly looked the part.

Charles arrived at the hospital and noticed some of the locals stealing glances at him in his current state. By a train conductor's standards, he was dressed up. Nonetheless, it seemed that New Czenoble citizens seemed to take offense when you didn't wear your suit properly or have your hair combed down.

A woman stood up upon his entrance and went to greet him. "I'm glad you came Charled," Nellie said, "I've been here for hours. It's nice to see that you could make it considering everything that has happened." Making a covert referance at Elizabeth.

"Not at all, Helen. It was the least I could do."

"Nonsense, we're all glad you came. Especially since Fonty's been asking for you." she said, pointing down the hallway towards Fauntleroy's room.

Charles was shocked by Nellie's statement. Surely Fauntleroy hadn't wanted to personally see him. He figured that his sisters or or niece would be the first on his mind.

"Don't worry" Nellie continued, "They're all fine. Now I suggest you go and speak to him before he gets irritated."

From the air, High Czenoble's Aerodrome looked like a giant glittering diamond, set among thousands of smaller jewels. Night had fallen over the city and the glaring floodlights of the Aerodrome were visible from many miles around.

Tonight, the air was electric and the Aerodrome was buzzing. Surrounded by large, imposing walls, the High Czenoble Aerodrome contained many internal stations for airships of all sizes to dock. It also contained hundreds of enormous hangars, where visitors and residents alike could store their airships for a sizable fee.

Vincent and Gadget stepped out of Vincent's steamcar, which was parked in the VIP area, just near the side entrance to the Aerodrome. The side entrance was more secure and was typically used by dignitaries and notable figures within High Czenoble.

Vincent did not want to take any changes tonight, especially after the recent attack on him only days earlier. He was more worried for Gadget than himself, though, and the fact that several Almagests were now in hospital did not act to ease his concerns.

As the pair entered the enormous arched side entrance of the Aerodrome, they walked down a long hall which was full of Royal Police Guard officers and travelers alike.

'I have never been anywhere this big!' exclaimed Gadget excitedly. His eyes scanned the high decorative ceilings, which seemed to stretch far into the air above their heads. As they walked they came upon multiple check-in counters, which consisted of arches in the walls, where attendants were separated from travelers by elaborate gold mesh.

Eventually, as they came to the end of the entrance hall, they saw an enormous opening. It was like being in the middle of the Chimaera Circuit, except that the Aerodrome was many times larger; one could barely see walls on the opposite side. The center of the Aerodome was completely open, with a lush grassy surface. Gadget's jaw dropped as his eyes struggled to comprehend the sheer amount of activity before them; the entire center of the Aerodrome was blanketed with thousands of people and many hundred large airships.

'So what do you think?' Vincent smirked.

Gadget said nothing and simply nodded, his wide grin enough of a response.

Vincent looked around. He looked as though he were lost all of a sudden.

'What's the matter?' asked Gadget.

'Oh, nothing,' said Vincent, 'I'm just trying to work out where Gustave is docked. Maybe he hasn't arrived yet-- Oh!'

'What is it?'

'There!' Vincent pointed at the sky, towards the western side of the Aerodrome.

Gadget looked up excitedly and sure enough, he saw it; something was descending from the grey and black clouds above. He could not really make out exactly what it was, but it was clearly enormous, even from a distance.

Already, there was a small commotion brewing on the ground. The center of the Aerodrome had filled up with Royal Police Guard officers, who were forming a line and shooing excited Czenovians away.

'What's going on?' asked Gadget with surprise.

Vincent rolled his eyes. 'They know he's coming. It must have been in the paper.'

Vincent pointed to their right. A large group of young women were flocking towards the center of the Aerodrome, where there was a glaringly empty space of some size between all of the other airships. The area looked to have been reserved for something much larger than the surrounding vessels.

Already, some nearby airships were powering up and hovering away from the center. Looks like they don't want to be anywhere near those screaming women, thought Gadget as he squinted in their direction.

'Is this because of Gustave?' asked Gadget.

Vincent nodded. 'Oh yes. He's the most famous Chimaera owner in Anova. And he's here to watch his entrants in the race tomorrow. It's the biggest race of the season - the match between Czenovia and Anova Republic. People get very passionate about it.'

'Oh,' mumbled Gadget. 'Why are they cheering for Gustave though? I thought they'd be booing him!'

'Oh, no. He's young and handsome...and the young women here seem to love his accent. He's been on the cover of several magazines, too. He's a royal pain.'

Gadget laughed. 'You're not jealous are you?'

Vincent shook his head vigorously. 'No, of course not! I just think he's too much of a show pony sometimes. He has no sense of etiquette.'

Gadget grinned and pointed upwards again. 'Looks like he knows how to throw a party, though.'

Vincent looked up. The enormous Anovan airship was now much closer and fully visible. The hull of the ship was coated in brilliantly shiny silver, which almost glowed in the Aerodrome's heavy floodlighting. The inflated chamber at the top was a vivid blue. Two long, sharply curved wings extended from either side of the hull; they looked like the blades of a large knife. Two large steam engines were attached to the sides of the blue chamber; they glowed a vivid orange in the night.

In true Gustave form, this was not any ordinary landing. All of the windows in the hull were open. Vincent could see figures in uniform - no doubt the ship's crew - standing at the windows. Suddenly - and with a high-pitched bang - giant plumes of red and blue streamers exploded from the windows in all directions. They glittered in the night air and gently settled on the throngs of screaming young women who were surrounding the docking site.

Vincent simply shook his head. 'He can never do anything quietly.'

Several women were unfolding a large banner over their heads, which read "WELCOME TO CZENOVIA! WE <3 YOU!!!"

Gadget was grinning from ear to ear. At least someone's finding this amusing, thought Vincent.

As the massive airship landed, the deafening drone of its steam engines began to dull and the orange slow subsided. Everything went quiet for a few moments, including the crowd of girls.

'Just wait for it,' said Vincent, his arms crossed.

An ear-splitting scream pierced the air as the girls began jumping, shouting and waving their banners in the air.

Gadget couldn't see anything, but shortly, the crowd began to part. Eventually, the gap in the crowd came closer and closer and soon, Gadget caught a glimpse of Gustave. 'There he is!' cried Gadget, who had almost become swept up in the moment.

Gadget was surprised to note that Gustave looked nothing like Vincent. It was surprising that cousins could look so completely different to one another.

Gustave was tall and slender. He did not quite have Vincent's air of masculinity, yet there was a confidence about him that one could not deny. His long hair was tied together and ran down the upper half of his back; it was a very light blond. In the floodlights, it looked like a brilliant, shimmering white. His face was elegant and shapely, with clearly defined features. He had large, expressive eyes and a mischievous smile.

Finally, Gustave worked his way out of the crowd and saw Vincent. He approached with a small entourage in tow.

'Vincent! Cousin! So good to see you!' Gustave embraced Vincent and kissed him on each cheek, as was customary in Anova. 'Cool night, isn't it? Perfect for flying, though. And who is this striking young fellow?'

Gustave smiled broadly at Gadget. 'This is Gadget,' said Vincent. 'We met recently and he has been staying with me for the past couple of days.'

'I see, I see!' exclaimed Gustave. He grabbed Gadget and kissed his cheeks. 'Any friend of Vincent's is a friend of mine, okay?' Gadget nodded awkwardly; he had never met someone as outgoing as Gustave.

Gustave was clearly not a Czenovian. Czenovians tended to wear heavy, well-tailored clothes that were generally incredible quality but more conservative. By comparison, Gustave's designer Anovan outfit was somewhat flamboyant. He wore tall boots with big silver buckles, slightly ruffled trousers, a black vest and a vivid long white coat with blue edging. His hands were enveloped in stark white leather gloves.

'So,' Vincent had to speak louder to overcome the squealing crowd nearby, 'where are you planning to stay? You have quite an entourage with you here.' Vincent looked over Gustave's shoulder and noted that there still seemed to be many crew inside the airship.

'Don't worry,' said Gustave with a wave of his hand, 'I will not be trying to fit this lot into your apartment. Don't want to scratch the floorboards, after all!' Gustave clicked his boots together and laughed. 'Seriously though, I have rented a summer house in High Czenoble. I'll be staying there for the week. It has plenty of room for my entire crew!'

Vincent and Gadget looked at each other.

'I just wanted to make sure you landed safely,' said Vincent. 'Looks like everything is all settled. We shall see you tomorrow then?'

Gustave nodded. 'Of course! Perhaps you can see the summer house after the race. I won't be staying at the Circuit for very long - only long enough to see my beloved Chimaera.'

Vincent smiled and said his goodbyes to Gustave. Then he and Gadget returned to Vincent's steamcar.

'I have never met a celebrity before,' said Gadget.

'Celebrities can become tiresome after a while,' replied Vincent. 'I love my cousin, but sometimes he is a bit too much for me to handle.'

Gadget smiled and lay against Vincent. 'One day I would like to see your home in Anova.'

'I'm sure you will,' said Vincent.

Evangeline awoke to the new morning, her hair ruffled and dark marks beneath her eyes, a sign of her lack of sleep. She had stayed at the hospital with Fauntleroy, Daedalus and Macey until late in the night as her family insisted that she get some sleep. Rising from the warmth of her bed she stumbled to the bathroom and grabbed the edges of the sink, staring at her shadowed face in the mirror.

Her mind buzzed remembering the events of the past week. So much ill-luck had befallen the Almagests, all in the period of approximately one single week. She showered and prepared herself, she would still have to go to the Chimaera Cup, even though some of her closest family members were in hospital.

Eva sighed as stood in front of her closet full of clothes, looking at them but not really seeing. She shook her head to snap herself out of it; she pulled out a beautiful light dress along with a set of pants and top, setting them on the bed beside each other. She didn't know what to wear, obviously the dress would be good since it was more of a formal appearance for the occasion, but if she was going to be looking at the Chimaera as so on, the pants would be the better choice. Eva frowned and wished that Ella was there to give her open opinion as she usually did when it came to moments of indecision.

Since it was an informal day of just visiting the races she decided on the breeches outfit. The top was a soft blue that brought out the colour of her eyes and was light and billowy, not clinging to her frame, with the breeches soft, dark brown leather looking stylish with a formal flair while being incredibly comfortable and durable. She kept an eye on the time as she fixed her hair and applied subtle make-up; a touch of colour to her lips, light blush and eye shadow, and some powder to conceal the dark rings under her eyes. Marie slipped on a pair of black comfy boots that wouldn?t get too messed up if she was to spend time with the chimaera, and deemed herself ready after a final check in the mirror.

Eva began her descent of the stairs and was surprised to see Macey standing in the hallway with Harrison and Victoria Ann. She smiled brightly and rushed down to embrace her twin tightly.

?Omigosh, Ella! When did you get back? You didn?t sneak out without them knowing did you? How are Uncle Daedalus and Fonty? And where are you three going?? she rushed, releasing her from the tight grip.

?I arrived this morning. No I didn?t sneak out of the hospital. And there?s been no change in Uncle and Fonty. As for the three of us? We?re going to the Chimaera Cup, as are you.?

?O-Oh? Uhm, ok then. Are you sure your parents are ok with you coming with us? And Ella, are you sure you?re up to it?? Eva was a little surprised at being told that they were taking the younger two to the races.

?Yes, our parents know.? Harrison answered for them both.

?I?m fine, Eva. Hopefully this will help us all to get our minds off the misfortune we?ve seemed to have lately.?

?Alright then, shall we get going?? Eva suggested with a smile, happy that Macey had returned, yet still worrying about the men who remained in their hospital beds.

Gadget's smile lingered on his face. He had only seen the interior of the High Czenoble Aerodrome once before, when he had escaped from the laboratory with Macey, but the events of that day about a week ago were all blurry to him. All the hustle and bustle of hundreds of people made his head spin. And all those airships looked so majestic up close! In his past they were but large shadows plying through the thick smog above the factories.

"You seemed to like the Aerodrome", Vincent remarked, giving him a nudge. Gadget nodded eagerly. "Then I'm sure you'll love the Chimaera Circuit. I'll take you to see the finals in a few days. Hopefully Macey will be up and about by then so she can join us."

"Huh? Why?" Gadget asked. Why did Vincent suddenly want to spend time with his ex-wife? A new kind of sensation stung his chest.

"Oh, I'm a born aristocrat, my dear. I know how to play the Game of Hearts. Macey is in dire need of a man in her life after the misery I caused her, and Gustave, on the other hand... He could use some stability to his bachelor life."

Gadget chuckled. "Well, if it's stability you're looking for, I don't think Macey's the choice..."

"Oh Gadget, you're so horrible", Vincent sighed, but then started to laugh from the bottom of his stomach. Gadget laughed with him, and the stinging feeling of jealousy was replaced by sheer joy.

As the laughter subsided, Vincent ruffled Gadget's longish blonde hair, and put his arm around the younger man's shoulder.

"I don't think I've asked you this after last night, but are you alright?" Vincent asked suddenly. "I know you care about Macey. She'll be alright, you can count on that."

Gadget muttered an agreement. Truthfully, he hadn't given Macey much thought after he had gone with Vincent. He was almost sorry that their night had been interrupted by the bomb in Rosengard...

A sudden bolt of realization struck him. He reached to his jacket pocket, and pulled out the note he had found on the cellar floor.

"What's that?" Vincent asked.

"I found it in Rosengard last night. I went to check the basement after the incident, and this was lying on the floor there. It's a poem of sorts, or perhaps a lyric to some song. Can you make any sense out of it?"

Vincent took the note and read it. "From the middle of the sea... It must be a riddle. But why would the bombers leave something like this behind?"

Gadget shrugged. He thought he didn't have the brains to solve any riddles, so it was best to leave it to smart people like Vincent. All Gadget wanted was to always feel as safe as he felt at that moment.

Alecia had thought that she would be more tired but instead she had woken up feeling surprisingly rested for a change. After taking both Harrison and Victoria Ann to the hospital to check on Daedalus, who though still asleep, was doing in Alecia's opinion as well as could be expected. In her professional opinion, she believed that given time he would actually recover. It was a matter of small things she could see, things that if he were not responding to treatment, would not have happened. In the end it had made it easier for her to tell the children he would get better and actually mean it. Which was good since children were often quick to pick up on when you were not sincere.

Fauntleroy had been easier since he had of course been awake and already complaining about being released, trying to explain that he would recover quicker in the comfort of his own bed. But Alecia had known it was more likely the comfort of being able to order the servants to bring him something to drink. Though she said nothing in front of the children since Victoria Ann was practically bouncing off the walls over seeing him doing so much better. Something that had Fauntleroy smiling even though he was less than thrilled at the prospect of being required to stay in the Eshe Rehema Medical Center while he recovered.

"I don't suppose I could convince you to put in a good word to get them to let me go?" Fauntleroy said once Alexander was gone to arrange for a carriage to take Harrison and Victoria Ann to Rosengard.

"Certainly not." Alecia said with a wry grin. "The bullet may be gone and you may be responding well to treatment, but it's far to soon for you to be heading home. You need to rest Uncle."

"But my own bed is far more comfortable than this place." He indicated the small hospital bed that he was currently lying on.

Alecia just laughed and moved to give him a kiss on the cheek. "It's not your bed that you miss Uncle." She chided when she pulled back. "I'll be back later today to see how you are doing so you behave alright?"

"We'll see." Fauntleroy said with a wink, causing to Alecia to laugh again before she went to find Alexander who would be finished with the children by now. And sure enough he was as she found him heading back to find her.

"There you are." He smiled upon seeing her. "What would you like to do today?"

Alecia knew what he was referring to, both of them on account of Leonhart's wake and the current Chimaera Cup festivities had the next couple of days off, just as Chaos was closed for the event as well as most if not all families would be taking part in the festivities that were set up all over High Czenoble.

"I don't know." Alecia finally said. Her and Alexander had discussed what they wanted to do, but that had been before the wake and the others had gotten hurt. She smiled sadly since even Alexander seemed oddly out of sorts since the events surrounding the attempt to destroy Rosengard and everyone inside.

"Do you think our spot would be free?" She took his arm in hers as they headed for the entrance to the center. Alecia didn't have to explain what she meant, after all Alexander knew what she was referring to. It was a slightly isolated spot in one of the many parks in the city. The very spot where he had finally proposed to her.

"Why don't we find out?" He let go to open the door leading out and then took it again as they headed for the train station.
