Strange Observation

It's the whole Clockwork Orange thing.

I'm mean, the whole idea of kids going out to bars, taking some drugs, beating the crap out of random people seems pretty accurate these days - the canes just took longer to catch on =)

Anyway, I've noticed a lot more young people using canes these days. I just find it odd I've only seen this in the past couple of years. What gives?

Sure, It's common to see someone using crutches if they've sprained a leg or something, but I'm seeing as many young adults in their 20s using canes as old people. Weird.
To be honest, I don't see the point really. I think this sort of thing has always happened and you just weren't in the right place to see it. I speak from experience as in the past I've had surgery on both knees and also had to have physical therapy when I got hurt on the job three years ago. And by the way I was in my twenties when those surgeries happened.

Anyway, what I am getting at is depending on the injury, sometimes all you need is a cane and it's far easier to use and cart around than crutches are. ^_~ I still have the one I got from when I had my first knee surgery. Age has nothing to do with it, it's all about need and circumstances. And maybe those young people you speak of have a reason to actually need it. In the end, I don't see why it would even matter if they do and I'd hardly consider it weird in any respect.

There are a few things we should consider. There is evidence for a lot of drug abuse lately and disabilities that require such things like walkers and canes are a result of that. Or in my case, being born with a disability just because my mom caught a horrible illness late in her pregancy. I hope I won't have to be relying on things like canes for a few more years.

I certainly didn't mean that young people were carrying around canes for no reason (Canadian trends????!!!!). They needed to use them.

Sure, SunfallE, you're right, sometimes all one needs is a cane to get around after an injury.

But canes are more often used because either the person has an injury that results in longterm problems or because the person is weak in their bones.

Are young people getting themselves into more serious injuries that result in long lasting damages (for instance, they use crutches for a while, but when they heal, they still limp and need to use a cane), or cases of arthritis or other bone problems increasing in young people?

Also, are you sure that it really is something new or something you've just never given much thought to before?
Sure, It's common to see someone using crutches if they've sprained a leg or something, but I'm seeing as many young adults in their 20s using canes as old people. I mean, even I have used one since I was in a car accident last year that resulted in my right leg being broken. Between the surgeries and time spent using crutches to get around, I ditched the unwieldy crutches the moment I could in favor of using a cane while I went through a phase of physical therapy to get back the strength in my leg. I'd be curious to know if the people in question that you saw really did have a more permanent condition or really were just using a cane since it was more convenient for them than other means such as crutches.

Especially since price wise, it's easy to get both for the same amount of money. So that really does put it into the stance of picking whichever works best. It was well worth the twenty bucks I spent to be able to get around a lot easier for those few months while I did physical therapy. XP

You know, it could just be peer pressure. What if all the guys are telling all the girls that they wouldn't sleep with anyone who doesn't walk with a cane. When I told everyone that, it had a huge effect - although the opposite from here. Even girls who had medical reasons to use canes stopped using them...

That just means you need to use reverse reverse psychology. Try this, tell all the girls that you won't sleep with them unless they wear clothing. Then, at least, you'll have have a bunch of naked girls running around.

This may just be one of those things that has always been happening but it's just now it was noticed. Kind of like if you take the time to make note of how many people in their late twenties/ early thirties that have braces on their teeth. Normally braces are associated with pre-teens/teenagers, not for thirty-somethings. When you start to look for it, you start to see there are quite a few in that age bracket that have braces.

I see the cane thing in the same way. You don't really notice it until you start to purposely seek it out. In response to the arthritis in young people increasing: I use a cane (or wheelchair) when my RA flares up. I didn't get the disease until I was in my mid-twenties but there are plenty of kids who suffer from JRA (Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis) and must use them from a very young age. Arthritis isn't a geriatric disease which is probably another reason people think it's weird to see kids with canes. One child in a thousand will be affected by arthritis and add to that the kids who suffer some sort of accident requiring a cane, so when you think of it that way, the chances of seeing a young person with a cane or in a wheelchair isn't so odd.

So, I guess what it comes down to is that I don't think it's a trend and arthritis isn't just a disease old people get.

On a completely different note, what's the need in that? Emos have nothing to do with canes O_o;; I think you should meet real people who self-harm and then tell me what that has to do with your idea of emos and canes.

And on subject...

I love it (*coughAvengedcough*) when people repeat almost exactly what I say! ¬_¬
meh i suppose.
why would u use a cane if you could have a claymore or a walter p-38.
Because of their inherent lameness and inferierority to canes.

You can keep your brutish, unsophisticated weapons. Give me elegance any day.
Except for when the recoil blows your arm off
Sword with recoil?:o But yea that would suck. Anyway canes are like...awesome. They have everyday uses. Don't feel like punching the guy who just bumped you in the face? Accidentally press your cane on his shoe really hard and act like your crippled(like doctor house! except he wasn't acting...well he was acting but in the show...whatever). Don't feel like getting up to turn off the TV? Buy a remote...OR throw your cane at it!(sure you might break the TV if your bad at aiming but your not bad at aiming are you?)
