Zen
You guys are all haters. Gwen Stefani is the dopest pop-singer around, and I'm not afraid to say it. "Sweet Escape" is, without a doubt, one of my favorite pop songs of all time, so eat it. I can see the resemblance, but the actual fragrance is called "L.A.M.B." and L is just the first letter of that, so its not like she's stealing the name or anything. Just the letter in that font to put on the bottle. So yeah. Quit hatin', haters.

James
Now if you'll excuse me I'll be listening to 2112 and reassuring myself that people who listen to mainstream music can be likened to enjoying having sandpaper scraped across their eardrums.
That's just sad, really. I hope you're not suggesting that pop music in general is empty garbage - you need a serious music history lesson if you believe that. "Mainstream" (depending on how you interpret it) doesn't necessarily equate to "bad". I think we have to be very careful not to dismiss relevant art and relevant artists in our quest to be cool, or at least, to somehow represent that we're doing something different or unique. And guys, seriously, whatever you think of Gwen Stefani...I don't see why we should devote an entire thread to bashing her personally. She's a person at the end of the day - a person who none of you actually knows, so you really aren't in a position to judge her character. There are plenty of celebrities that I don't like (in terms of their art), but I would never sit there and go on and on about how much I hate them personally. If I don't know them personally, how can I hate who they are? As I said before, hate is a very strong word. All of the hot air in this thread is only serving to kill brain cells as far as I'm concerned, lol.
Korey
James, I couldn't have said it better myself. On a wilder tangent (for all those who bash mainstream music haters), mainstream music isn't bad per se, it's just not your cup of tea. As a person, you dig different types of music. Some of them come from independent record labels that don't get as big a shot as other artists who sign with major record labels. If it's one thing that these major labels are doing, it's signing the good talent so that it can be heard across the world. Doesn't mean that there isn't bad musicians (in my opinion anyways) that do "mainstream" stuff, but that doesn't make indie music the end all, be all of good music. To tell you the truth, you have to look long and hard for a decent indie band or musician. Lots of indie music is really sub par to what others are producing under major record labels, because mainly of the major label's ability to generate funds and make good records.

And as for Gwen, I live by the policy that my reaction to others is based only on how they efect my life directly, and since the only interaction I have with Gwen Stefani, as indirect as it may be, is by way of her music or television appearance or the reactions that other peole have to them, namely my mum, so I'm more than happy to catalogue her in my mind as 'annoying' because that's my impression of our interaction, and I call her 'ugly' for the same reason because my tastes are obviously not aimed in that direction. And for the love of god, Lunox, and other people here really need to learn to do this as well, why can't you just say 'sorry for misjudging you' and leave it be, you have to keep trying to find a way to make your moot point. It's more than obvious I don't give a flying **** how 'fake' you think Hirano Aya is, nor do I caer how fake she probably actually is, she's cute, whatever. Contradicting myself is something I'm more than fine with, I hate fake *******, and there are some exceptions, just like there are to the atrocity of pop music, who gives a damn. now kindly get over yourself and let me have my damn opinon without a whole bunch of badgering dickheads telling me that what I'm dong is wrong. And that's right about why i compared it to a white neighboorhood, where everyone has their little notion that they know exactly what's right and can sit on their highhorses laughing at anyone with a little disagreeable angle on things. When it's one guy, he's always the town boob, but the minute it's another rich white bloke on a high horse it's a 'debate' and we all take it seriously. Personally, I find the whole system to be smug and disgusting, but I'm not one to move away because I don't like some of my neighboors, especially whne there are enough of the opnionless housewives running around keeping me entertained.
James
I think the problem is that you're trying to position yourself as some martyr when that's clearly not what you are. Why are people criticizing you? They're doing it because you're not simply talking about your preference for a type of music. Nobody will say that you have to like Gwen Stefani's music for example. The point is that you're visciously attacking someone in a personal manner - someone who you don't even know. Don't try to pass that off as some high-minded ideal or "personal preference". It's outright bashing of another person on no real basis other than the art they produce. If you want to be critical of art, then by all means, you can do that. Nobody is arguing otherwise. There's nothing unreasonable at all about not wanting to turn this thread into a "let's all bash person A for no reason!" discussion. So I recommend remaining on-topic; I've never tolerated personal attacks on members, so I don't know why I'd tolerate it against anyone else.
Justin
That, and your metaphors don't make any sense. Just thought I'd throw that in. The bottom line is this, I think: Music is an issue of personal taste. I have a fairly strong distaste for most pop music. Not mainstream music, and not all pop music; but most. I can't really disrespect someone who likes it, as it fits their personal taste. I still retain my whole "freeze-dried music rations for the opiated masses" opinion; but at the end of the day, that is just a personal observation, based upon a stereotype. And I still don't really understand why people care about celebrities--whose music they don't even like--enough to 'hate' them. James says 'hate' is a strong word, and rightly so. However, he doesn't elaborate much on that cliche, probably because if one has to elaborate on a statement like that, the elaboration will go straight over its target's head. However, I'm going to go there: To truly love is not a feeling. It's a commitment. A commitment to the betterment of that individual, or cause, or whatever, for life. To truly hate is the inverse. It's a commitment to the detriment of its object, for life. I doubt--and seriously so--that anyone in this discussion is twisted enough to truly hate someone they do not know because they dislike their art. Hate produces things more evil than war. It produces things like murder, rape, torture, and the like. That said, hate is a very inappropriate word to describe feelings about someone you have no right to judge in the first place. And to use it in this fashion ultimately makes you look like a damned sight of a fool. Now, that I'm done with my sermon, I'd support this thread being closed; if one with the jurisdiction agrees with that. -Justin
James
I'm sure that the word "hate" is used as a throwaway line most of the time. But...the only reason I make an issue in this case is because it's become so fashionable to "hate" what's popular. And for what reason, really? The stereotype of pop music does exist for a reason, admittedly. But there are plenty of pop artists out there who actually dare to try something that isn't canned and wrapped for the masses. Any artist who dares to actually inject some visual or aural innovation is ironically labelled as weird or a sell-out or whatever. I don't understand that. Moreover, as I said...I'm more than happy for people to have a legitimate conversation about musical styles and stuff. That's totally cool. But devoting a whole thread to bashing someone only makes OtakuBoards look bad, honestly. lol Anyway, Justin, I tend to agree with you. I think we already covered the "L" question, haha. :catgirl:
