Therefore I can only assume that none of YOU have heard of this movie either. But since I take pity on you all, I'll sum up the movie in under sixteen words. Musical Johnny Depp Mad Barber Slit Throat Bad Times Friend Bake Victims Into Pies Fun Times. In other words? If you haven't seen it yet you should feel very bad and possibly go home and slit your throat with a straight razor. That way you'll be experiencing Sweeney Todd the way God intended.

This thing's been all over TV Guide, among other places. Usually I can't stand musicals ? the one exception being The Sound of Music, for what reason I'm not entirely certain. See, I just can't deal with the constant eruptions of song and choreographed dancing and general WTFery that goes on in them. I'm kind of excited about Sweeney Todd, though. First, it's looking a bit darker than most musicals I've seen, and seeing how much I enjoy Poe and Hitchcock and V for Vendetta, I though I might check it out. Second, Johnny Depp is doing a musical. Hopefully I'll be able to catch it in theaters. Otherwise, I hope it comes out on DVD sometime soon.
Panache
I've seen previews of it while waiting to see various movies. When the mad barber of Fleet Street dances with Mrs. Lovitt, the mad baker of Fleet Street...with rolling pin and cleaver. And the transitions between spoken word and song are virtually seamless. Be excited. Because this is without a doubt one of the darkest musicals on the face of the PLANET.
"It is also something close to a masterpiece, a work of extreme ? 2010DigitalBoy
Haven't heard of it? I can't even conceive a tim burton or johnny depp film that the whole of OB is fauning over like crazy. I always figured that was one of the siite's things. I'm excited about this, since I love the Tim/Johnny combo and I love dark stories and I love good musicals. It's like they pooled all the most awesome things possible into one film. Dagger
Hoping to see this tomorrow or over the weekend. It's my third favorite musical and one of Sondheim's best. Disappointed that Burton cut out the main song, but I'll refrain from passing judgment on that until after I watch the movie. ~Dagger~

Raiha
Hmmm, Rach you DO realize you just listed two children's movies. But that's okay. Let he who hath not seen Ice Age 2: The Meltdown on opening night cast the first stone. .......shut up. Don't look at me like that. I don't know you! The whole time you watch the movie, Tim Burton's madness oozes out of every orifice. Just everywhere, you see the insanity leaking out. One of the best quotes of the movie involves Mrs. Lovitt, Sweeney and a corpse. He's just sung one of the most moving and horrifyingly wonderful songs of the movie.
"That's all very well and good, but what are we going to do about him?"
It's even up on youtube right now! Hurry before it's taken off. DeathKnight
Opening weekend was kind to Sweeney Todd at the showing I attended. A throng of people were in the theater. The movie itself was very good. I had to grow used to the medium and the nature of the film. A musical with gore is stranger than it sounds on paper. Tim Burton's touch added additional surreality to what I was watching as he brought the dark humor of the play to vivid life at times. Sacha Cohen was a fun surprise. I recommend it.

Shinmaru
I saw it yesterday and liked it. Can't really think of a better way to spend Christmas than watching Johnny Depp singing and slashing many a bloody throat. Gotta say after watching it, the Golden Globe nomination for Johnny Depp isn't too surprising. He's pretty intense as Sweeney Todd. Helena Bonham Carter is good, too; she's great at capturing Mrs. Lovett's indifference to all the death around her, her obsession with Sweeney, and all the little moments where she's trying to comfort Toby and herself. As usual with Tim Burton, the atmosphere is spot-on with the utter filthiness and despair of London. One shot I really love is after
Sweeney pushes Mrs. Lovett into the oven and he looks inside to watch her burn - the flames leaping up around Sweeney's eyes as he watches is so ****ing creepy. It's like the Devil himself is watching Mrs. Lovett die.
Lastly, Sacha Baron Cohen as an Italian = much hilarity. So, yeah, good stuff. Everyone here should definitely see it. As for musicals in general, I used to hate on them a lot, too, but it's kind of hard to keep hating on them once you've seen the best of the best. I mean, My Fair Lady? Singin' in the Rain? Most everything Stephen Sondheim has done?? Kind of hard to hate a genre that's produced that kind of quality.

Everyone here should definitely see it.
I didn't realize it was him until the ending credits. And then I felt a perverse desire to hide in the back of the theatre until it showed again so I could see him with my Borat eyes. Everyone here should definitely see it, unless they're part of the 9% of the population that faints at the sight of blood. But seriously. Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece isn't completely butchered by Tim Burton. Rather, the madness is enhanced, especially by the driving string arrangements and brass selections. I was surprised actually at how deep and wonderful the cinematography was. When Mrs. Lovitt and Toby have their duet, I was charmed by the flickering of the light across her face. And possibly one of the best things about the movie was the deadpan expression Sweeney Todd manages to keep on his face, at least during the times when he's not
beating Borat to death with an iron tea kettle full of hot water.

Konata
I just heard of it recently, because I had some free time and there was an article about it in the school newspaper, lol. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have known what Sweeney Todd was, because I don't watch TV, read many magazines, etc. But I heard there would be bloodshed, slitting, and cannibalism, so now I reeeeeally am interested. 2010DigitalBoy
Oh man, just saw this a couple of hours ago, and it was so excellent. Just to get the negative out of the way, thanks to my theater's volume being too ****ing low and the dumb ******* behind me chatting at parts, I could barely understand a single word that came out of Helena Bonham Carter's mouth during any song. However, that's obviously not the movie itself's fault. As I expected, it was a wonderful tragedy and all the good things I expected of it and more. Nothing like a dark, brooding, comedic and violent masterpiece to liven your afternoon. Oh my god the blood. So beautiful. I honestly didn't know it would be so very bloody, but the blood was just so perfect at all times. I can tell Tim Burton put extra effort into making the blood as awesome as possible, and the final image of
Sweeny's neck pouring over his wife's face
was just utterly splendid. The movie had quite a few 'OMFG!' moments, which is nice as well. My favortie song was the one where Sweeny was announcing how he'd kill everyone in London. Konata
I accidentally went to the captioned version so I could understand everything that they were saying, haha. Even Carter's. I liked the movie, it's my favorite musical film now haha. Like DB pointed out, the blood looked absolutely brilliant, especially because of its contrast with the monochrome-like atmosphere. I also liked how even though a whole scene of Sweeney slitting everyone's throats could've been too redundant, Burton made it so that each new throat slit was a new experience. I bought the soundtrack too lol... I like "Epiphany", "A Little Priest(?)", and "Helena (the second version)".
Raiha
I found someone had posted the entire soundtrack on youtube on a very convenient playlist, so I just use that instead. It's not that I didn't like the whole thing in its entirety, there are just a few songs that I love THE MOST. And I'll list them now for you in order of how they appear on the film. 1: No Place Like London 2: The Worst Pies In London 3: Epiphany. Essentially I just love the lilting of the first song, the ranting of the second, and the rage and sorrow in the third. I love how Depp's voice roughens up when he becomes angry.
Imp
*rates movie 9.5/10* *runs away from people holding razors which want to kill me for not rating it 10/10* Whew, now that that's over... I think the only reason I rated the movie only 9.5/10 was because I'd seen it before as a play, and all the songs were the same and such and such... But that's a pointless personal reason. I first saw the movie on the 30th of December, and loved it. I loved especially the soundtrack in the beginning, and the song where Sweeney and Lovett are scheming about all the different types of pies they could make. (No, it has to be grocer--it's green!) Another thing that is just me, but that I couldn't stop thinking about as I watched it, was that I recognised three of the actors from the Harry Potter movies, and immediately drew connections between the characters they played in both movies. Which was especially funny in the judge's case. :animesmil And the fact that both take place in London, of course.
conpiracymonki
Just watched it yesterday (UK release) with a girl I know lol. She freaked out cos she's so squeamish and didnt know anything about the film except that it starred Depp lol. Well, her choice lol. I know this is going to sound weird, but I'm not sure I liked it. I enjoyed it but I dont think I'd watch it again. The songs ranged from hilarious to silly to creepy which was cool.
And SBC's cameo was absolutely great lol
. I hadnt seen the original so I wasnt sure how it was going to end and it was like watching an accident happen once you put all the pieces together in your head lol. Romantica
I hadn't heard of the movie before my friend told me. Once she told me, I found the book (original script by Stephen Sondeim). The book was so much more amazing than the movie. Although, it was slow moving, it did tell you more about each individual character and on the movie you actually knew how the music went. xD I also thought that it should've just stayed written out as a play. It didn't work so well as a movie. @Rachmaninoff: I LOVE your signature!
