Tokyo Majin

Disclaimer: Not a philosophical masterpiece, but fun if you like this kind of thing. That having been said....

Zombies? Mayhem? Awesome animation? Count me in. Just watched the first disc of this two-season, 26-episode show from ADV. Now I'm just disappointed that the next volume won't be coming out till February.

I'd kept a loose eye on Tokyo Majin since it first started airing and was pleased (albeit surprised) when ADV licensed it... it never seemed to get much buzz. Now I understand why they did it, though. For a show that's based on a PS1 game that no one's heard of, it has great fight scenes, the kind of bizarre background humor I love, and fantastic, playful, sure-handed direction. I also like the sharp, almost jagged character designs.

Anyway, this is a good bet if you need your dose of teenagers with assorted powers but don't want to mess around with something as long or as up-and-down as the likes of Bleach. The ensemble cast is decent, and the main character, Hiyuu, is different from just about any other shounen-action protagonist. If I had to describe him, I'd call him a male Rei-type. The Mary Sue-ish Aoi is the only real low point; her saving grace is being the object of another female character's (sadly unrequited) affections.

The first episode is waaay in medias res, and as they jump back in time for the following episodes, you're expected to figure out what happened when instead of being spoon-fed. But hey. Gotta have some way to keep from falling asleep between battle scenes... keeping those synapses firing is as good a way as any.

I found the series was enjoyable enough, but couldn't quite live up to the first episode, which was a masterpiece. There's also a lot of backstory left hanging ready for the second season (which is either airing now or has already finished, I'm not sure). So you have to wait until Dai Ni Maku is licensed before finding out what the deal is with Hiyuu's Dragon Fist.

Nice fights, though. Worth watching, but I probably wouldn't buy it.

Just got done watching the first season which was awesome in so many ways that it outweighed the bad, though I have some real issues with it. Mostly the last episode, which is nothing but ****ing exposition for season two, which generally pissed me off.

But yeah, after a great first 2 eps, things were rocky for 3-4 eps, but by ep 7 it was smooth sailing... 12 was kind of boring being nothing but a 'loading the guns' sort of episode. The climax is okay - it could have been much better, but could have been much worse. The last episode just totally left me with a bad taste in my mouth, but besides that it was mostly completely awesome.

Another gripe I have its that everyone in this show is a goddamn martyr. It starts to piss you off when you've heard the words 'I'll prtect you' the 754th time.

I watched the first volume of Tokyo Majin, and thought it was pretty much awesome. Unfortunately I've heard it gets kind of crappy over time, so that is not exciting. :/ The feeing I got from watching it was a lot like watching the first volume of Air Gear - it just had some sort of coolness that I really got into.
