Panache
Yea well if you listen to music with vocals you probably have a favorite vocalist. So here is the place where you tell us about them! This is not however a place to bash other peoples favorite vocalist. You can express your opinion obviously but there is no bad mouthing. I encourage you to update us on who your favorite vocalists are whenever they have changed. Also don't forget to tell us why. Oh and feel free to discuss Lyrics written by them as well as that also goes into being a good vocalist. having a good voice is useless if you have nothing to say after all. Anyway here are a few favorites of mine. Maynard James Keenan of Tool ,Puscifer ,Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty ,Shandi's Addiction ,A Perfect Circle, and Tapeworm He has a a very flexible and beautiful voice. He can make a crude sounding angry sound or a beautiful vigorous sound. His voice almost always meshes with whatever band or sound that plays with him. He is my definite favorite number one vocalist. Layne Staley of Alice In Chains In his lifetime his voice has added that special edge to many great songs. Man in the box, Got Me wrong ect...He is also very flexible. He can do a tender voice unlike anyone I have ever heard but he also can have a thick abrasive sound which I also like a lot. Chris Cornell of Soundgarden,Temple of the Dog, and Audioslave Chris is just plain great .It seems as if people just can't get enough of his voice. He has an amazing soft sounding voice and an an epic angry almost violent voice. Also no matter what you can still hear some sort of melody in his voice. Claire
Davey Havok (AFI, Son of Sam, Blaqk Audio) William Beckett (The Academy Is...) Anthony Green (Circa Survive, Saosin, The Sound of Animals Fighting) I don't really know how to describe why I love their voices so much. They're all very very good singers, and I can't really pick which one is the best out of the three.
Panache
Davey Havok (AFI, Son of Sam, Blaqk Audio)
I didn't know he played in Blaqk Audio. I don't really like the way he sings in AFI but in Blaqk he is great.
Room Service
Jon Anderson (Yes!, Jon & Vangelis) Don van Vilet AKA Captain Beefheart (Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band) Ray White (Frank Zappa) Frank Zappa (Frank Zappa, the Mothers of Invention) Stan Rogers (Solo) Freddie Mercury (Queen) Some of these guys have voices that just blow me away. Mercury, Anderson, White, they all had/have amazing voices. But Zappa and van Vilet didn't really have transcendent voices, and I like them more than the rest... somehow their voices just fit their music personally. Especially van Vilet; his voice is grating and throaty, by traditional standards just terrible. But it's so delightfully weird that it fits perfectly with his music.
John
David Bowie ****ing duh. Miki Berenyi (Lush) I want Lush to reform so I can be her man-groupie and we could go back to the van and she could just sing to me all night. Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, other bands that don't matter)
Chris Cornell of Soundgarden,Temple of the Dog, and Audioslave Chris is just plain great .It seems as if people just can't get enough of his voice. Aberinkula
Claudio Sanchez - Coheed and Cambria, The Prize Figther Inferno Out of every vocalist I've heard, Claudio Sanchez is the ebst. He has a Geddy Lee style voice, but in comparison, Claudio is better than Geddy Lee. He can go high, and he can scream like a vulture. But, some people hate his voice. My freind likes his voice, so does my gf, but my other freind thinks his voice his annoying. Hoenslty, it's amazing and it makes every song he sings, beautiful. Ben Burnley - Breaking Benjamin His voice has alwayss soothed me, listening to the Accoustic version of The Diary of Jane puts me to sleep, his voice is just angelic. Plus, I admit, I like his scream too. Well it's more of a grunt, but whatever. Maynard James Keenen - Tool, A Perfect Cirlce, Puscifer All I can say is, listen to Vicarious, Shcism and Ticks and Leeches. IMO, they are the best showings of his vocals.
Justin
Mikael Ã…kerfeldt-Opeth: Both his harsh vocals and his clean vocals are amazing. His harsh has a certain musical quality to it that is rare among extreme metal vocalists. John Haughm-Agalloch: The guy's whispering rasp also carries a strange musical quality that I find addictive. Trevor Strnad-The Black Dahlia Murder: This guy's shriek is amazingly piercing. Though, I'm much more of a low-end growler myself, when I heard that man's demon cry, I set myself instantly to learn how to do it. James Dewar- the Robin Trower Band: Now, I have a weak spot for blues-rock from the late 60s, and this guys hits that spot. Ronnie James Dio- Dio, Black Sabbath, Rainbow: If heaven split open and God sang a song, it would sound very much like this man's voice. -Justin
David Bowie ****ing duh.
I have been listening to Bowie's Stuff recently. In a year or two he might be up there for me too. Oh yea and I am adding Spencer-The Fastest Kid in 5th Grade This dude is nuts. He does this awesome sorta whiny indie voice then does this hell banshee thing that makes me wanna rage so hard. Goodbye, Face
Haha, what can I say, Spencer has an addicting voice. Travis (one of the guitarists) and I had a chuckle at your post and I ended up posting the rest of their videos that I have on YouTube. (http://www.youtube.com/user/calmsongnc) I don't think he quite matches the excellence of the other singers mentioned here but I'm glad you like Fastest Kid, Panache. I also have to give hi-fives to those of you who mentioned Mikael Ã…kerfeldt (copy/paste), Chris Cornell, and definitely Anthony Green. Anthony is my favorite vocalist. :D Also of note is the same one I always bring up, Julie Christmas from Battle of Mice and Made Out of Babies. She can sing in various levels of evil, and she has a deeply emotional and piercing scream. Nothing quite moves me like her voice. One I never mention but I'm slowly realizing the importance of is Rick Froberg of Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, and Hot Snakes. He and fellow guitarist John Reis have partnered up for each of these bands and the two are an unstoppable duo. Reis went solo in Rocket From the Crypt and I just can't stand them. Froberg really makes the bands he's in for me. He's got this balls-out punk-rock swagger, it makes him tough and emotional at the same time. Perfect.

Epic win, man. I want to throw in a couple personal faves - Cedric Bixler-Zavala from The Mars Volta for being able to make music out of his voice. Claudio Sanchez though only really on everything before good Apollo, because on there it sounds like he's trying too hard. There are a lot more worht mentioning, but that covers the best.
Korey
My votes go to M. Shadows (A7X)- Not so much for his singing per se, but his lyric writing skills are superb. Some of his stuff gets pretty addicting. Plus he has a nice maniacal laugh. The drummer in the band my buddy is in curses him for being the 1st rocker to sport a grill as a part of his act. Brandon Flowers (The Killers)- His voice is so distinct and offbeat that he is cool. No one really gives The Killers props, but their CDs are gems as far as music goes. It has an old school feel to it and yet still retains that "Killers" sound in every track. Brandon's lyrics make the songs alive in my opinion. A good Example would be in "Read My Mind" off of the Sam's Town CD. Anthony Keidis (RHCP)- I've always been a fan of RHCP and some of Keidis's lyrics still remain stuck in my head. Under the Bringe and Scar Tissue are ones that stick out for me. Even if you're not a RHCP fan, I bet you can find one song of theirs that you like. Guaranteed.
OMNOMNOMALY
Freddie Mercury (Queen)
absolutely! =) One of my favourite vocalists and has been for a long long time. Emily Haines - Metric, The Soft Skeleton I love her voice because it can do really high and low and never loses it's quality. I think it's really unique. Lisa Lobsinger - Reverie Sound Revue So soft and full of expression. It just gives me goosebumps! I find it sad how the band is so relatively unknown, I think they could do so well. ZeitGeist
Marilyn Manson. I don't think Manson is a great vocalist for the songs he sings, i think he's a great vocalists because of how he sings them. His voice is among the most unique in modern music and he is consitently good in every song he does. I don't necessarily like the content, but the man is talented. Freddie Mercury. Freddie Mercury is, hands down, the most incredible performer ever. His vocal range leaves imitators for dead, you can tell he was the one and only when the Queen tribute bands all soudn to cheap, slapdash and irritatingly horrid. There will never be another Freddie Mercury, he is one in a million.
PWNED
I'm going to go with Mike Patton. He has such a humorous yet creepy quality to his voice which I really enjoy. And agreed on Freddie Mercury, truly a one in a million voice
