Beautiful or Smart?

There are mainly two categories of people in this world. People who are beautiful(or handsome) and people who are extremely smart. Now that I think about it, you can be beautiful and smart or think you're beautiful, but you're not, or think you're smart and you're not. Well, anyway, if you had only two choices, would you be have beauty or would you be smart?

and, as a side note, would a lion eat a cat?

Lions don't eat other predators. They just kill them.

If I had to pick then clearly I would have to be a princess with one of those 'life choices' coming up that leads to horrible cursing and typically a lot of princes ignoring me. And since I would want to be happy, and we all know smart people are generally not happy, I'd want to be beautiful.

But then how would I know I was beautiful? And would other people I'd want to think me beautiful still think I was beautiful if I had the brains of a cabbage? Doubtful.

The way I see it...

Smart and ugly = being able to become rich is all good and fine, money can buy many things that one would want. However there is things money wouldnt be able to buy, sure you may have the money to buy a hot girl/guy into marriage, but how would you feel knowing that its not you but your money that they want. With being smart comes the knowledge, and knowledge can be a painful thing. The knowledge of what you dont have and what can not be achieved (beuty) is always painful.

beuty and dumb = Being beutiful has its perks as you can be popular, you can still make some good money (maybe not to smarts standards). Most likely the people that speak to you cos of beuty are shallow individuals and this is never good. The bottom line, dumb people can easily live in ignorance (so shallow-ness doesnt exist to them) and as was once so rightly said "ignorance is bliss".

So with that I think logically I would go with beuty and dumb over smart and ugly.

In your hypothetical world, how smart are we talking about here? There are smart people, and then are geniuses. If you're a genius, does that mean you're insanely hideous? If you're just barely "smart", are you barely "ugly"?

It's the case in those who aren't smart too.

The ignorant do not know. That is the ugliness inherent.

Wow, you lost me on that one. Im not sure what you mean, are you saying ignorance is the ugliness (i.e being dumb is ugly in itself?) or something else?

I'd say it depends on what you consider beautiful as well as what you consider smart. Once I know what guidelines we are using here, I could answer the question. But since I don't know, I'll go by my own, which says you can have one or the other or both. I mean why not? I know plenty of people who are beautiful, smart and happy. =P

Steering away from the feel-good relativism of Sabrina's post, I'd just like to point out that I find this kind of binary hypothetical choice-making stuff a complete, total, and utter waste of time. Beauty and intelligence are both continuous traits, and beauty is also half-subjective, so what's the frilling point?

I choose Clue. (^_^)

Well Allamorph, I guess that means... PIKACHU I CHOOSE YOU!

I mean, I think I wouldn't choose one or the other. I'm fine the way I look, and believe it or not I'm pretty smart as is. I got a 4 on the New York State Science Exam, and I got the second highest State Social Exam grade in the 8th grade. So neither. Plus too much beauty deludes the mind, while too much smarts leaves less knowledge to learn. I mean it's good to know a lot, but being very smart just leaves out the experience. As for too much beauty, what's the point? You'd just be more eye-candy than anything and the true beauty lies within.

I know that the point of this thread is not to point out the boringly obvious (i.e. that you can have beauty and intelligence and that beauty in particular is highly subjective).

But I will say that the two definitely aren't mutually exclusive. I have known (and do know) people who have both traits. Several OBers can claim to have equal amounts of these traits as well. :catgirl:

If I really had to choose one or the other though?

I suppose I'd choose intelligence. I think that I would enjoy life more thoroughly and with greater appreciation if I had intelligence.

For instance, if you're beautiful (but stupid) and incredibly rich...will you really enjoy your wealth? Will you really appreciate it? Will you make good use of it?

If you're intelligent you can at least delve into many different hobbies and you can probably better appreciate your position in life.

Plus, even if you're smart and ugly...that still won't stop you from having a partner. It just means you need to team up with another smart, ugly person.

Awww, thanks! J/K...

But again, beauty is subjective like everyone has been saying. But to be honest, there are plenty of intelligent people out there. And when you compare it, there's more jobs out there for the simple-minded man than there are geniuses....
I know plenty of intelligent people who are unsuccessful just because the industry is so competitive. I don't think I would be able to deal with the stress. (after school, that is)

On the other hand, I also know a lot of beautiful people who are very successful. Let's face it: If you're beautiful, you could just be a model and make a bunch of money. It's not that hard to walk even if you are incredibly stupid. (just spit out the gum before you hit the catwalk! :catgirl:)
And since I'm going to assume, that being dumb doesn't include not knowing how to work modern technology, they could always be a telemarketer or something.

If a dumb person had to work a mediocre job for minimum wage, I'm sure they wouldn't enjoy their cash that much. If a genius raked in millions annually, but never had anyone to share the joy with, I'm sure they wouldn't enjoy the loneliness.

If I had to choose: I wouldn't. I would flip a coin and leave it up to chance...

I believe both traits are independent of happiness, and really - our quest for beauty or intelligence arguably could be a disguised quest for happiness. Would anyone agree?

However, as the question is to choose between the two... I would pick intelligence, as it is more useful to the collective than beauty. Sorry to be boring.

Please note this opinion is formed by having ample stores of both traits - were this not the case, I'm sure I would have a different answer. (Well, obviously!)

Well you know Aaryanna, if you chose beauty and gave your dog the smarts, you could be the first teenager with an english-speaking dog. And with the looks on you, you'd be a pretty popular couple :p
