I would much rather go for being smart. Why should I settle with being satisfied with stupid things? Why should I set my standards so low that I can only be enchanted by the mediocre in mediums? Why can't I be inspired by true art?

I would much rather die today and intelligent than to live until I was 70 being an idiot and a fool.

I would choose intelligence because if you aren't smart, you wouldn't be able to really appreciate beauty anyway. And by beauty I'm talking about more than just the shallow surface appearance that is often associated with being beautiful.

Seriously though, not being able to see the beauty in so many ways and things would be like I had suddenly gone blind. I'd rather pass on that.

Steering away from the feel-good relativism of Sabrina's post, I'd just like to point out that I find this kind of binary hypothetical choice-making stuff a complete, total, and utter waste of time. Beauty and intelligence are both continuous traits, and beauty is also half-subjective, so what's the frilling point?

I choose Clue. (^_^)
The point is to be silly! :D Because why not? You already spent the energy to say it's a waste of time so why not waste even more to pick? =P If it came down to it I'd want to be smart since like Rach said, what's the point of beauty if you don't fully appreciate it? Though that too is subjective.

Anyway... Clue for the win! >_> I'd pick that too. I need to play that again, it's been far too long since I did. And that is a crime, it's a fun game.

If I could only have one and not the other I?d choose intelligence. While I really admire intelligence, there is nothing like a beautiful human being. However, when it comes down to it, beauty will only go so far; whether it?s relationships or the work world. Save for models, exotic, strippers, prostitutes etc?

True that beauty attracts you initially and is something desired, but it is up to a person?s other traits to win you over. Unless you just like people for their physical attributes, you would probably find a beautiful simpleton to be quite unattractive.

Sure I love a handsome, good looking guy, but it?s a real turn off if he can hardly spell his own name.

of course people who are beautiful are rich! i know that. but wouldn't rich, beautiful, dumb people be broke because they spend all their money on clothes and other crap like that? and i say, i have both traits, simply 'cause i'm blessed! =p

*raises eyebrow* Most rich girls are attractive, but no, that's doesn't beautiful people must be rich. One of my closest friends, and possibly one of the prettiest girls I've met, is neither rich nor dumb.

I'm a self-conscious guy in real life as it is. Or it's mere modesty. I don't know. Still, I don't exactly excel at school (more or less due to pure laziness and that good ol' fashion procrastination) and I'm not the most handsome fellow (that's me in my banner), but I've always appreciated compliments I get my way. I would choose beauty, honestly, because in this day and age, it seems everyone is about looks now and personality/skills is slowly depleting.

If, when speaking of smarts, we're talking about abilities and creativity as well, then I might be a little more interested in being smart. But according to actual psychology, intelligence and creativity are not the same and cannot be measured together. Only to a certain point can IQ affect creativity.

I'm getting too technical :[[ So I'll say I'd like to be hott please. Haha.

Ha, I'm lazy and procrastinate too!:animesmil

And I don't think you need the looks, you don't look half-bad! A teensy-weensy bit like my boyfriend, actually. But only a teensy-weensy bit.:smirk:
All Beauty will fade, the mind will also decay.

But if i had my choice, I would choose to be smart. Better to know people hang out with you for your mind, not your face.
In your hypothetical world, how smart are we talking about here? There are smart people, and then are geniuses. If you're a genius, does that mean you're insanely hideous? If you're just barely "smart", are you barely "ugly"?

Did you ever read A Spell for Chameleon? It's part of the Xanth series (the first one, I think) by Piers Anthony. There's a character who over the course of a month transforms from hideous genius, to average nobody, to drop-dead gorgeous airhead.

I'd rather be smart because I could use my brain-power to create a machine that makes everyone else uglier than me. Then, I will be both smart and beautiful.

I have strange thoughts.

Ah, Allamorph strikes again...your mastery of the biting sarcasm is too good for most humans to comprehend, fellow. May your days be filled with more witty observation and sly commentary that may or may not discourage your fellow conspirators....

Gah, why do I feel that Mitch posted this instead of me?

Good stuff, Alla...way to read a thread!

By the way, the "I'd choose smart, but I'd be so smart that I'd INVENT A WAY FOR ME TO BE BEAUTIFUL HAHAHAHA" replies are total cop-outs. =p

I would say that I definitely value intelligence over conventional beauty.
