Peace Corps anyone?

Is there anyone here who is interested in applying, is, or has been in the Peace Corps? What about anyone here who knows anyone who's been?

I'm considering teach/volunteer abroad programs, perhaps I'll do this a few years later in the future. I considered PC when I was in college, but since I was already behind, and it required over 2 years of volunteer work, it wasn't the best choice for me. Now I'm out and have been working for a year, and while sitting around during summertime, the thoughts have come up again. I'm still extremely hesistant, but it's a monkey on my back that keeps coming and going.

Any thoughts on the program or alternatives?

[font=trebuchet ms]My gov teacher was in the Peace Corps, and he enjoyed telling stories (a lot), so we were told stories about the Peace Corps multiple times. From what he's told us, it is a big committment, but you can't count on actually getting in. Plenty of physically fit, intelligent people are denied positions because they don't qualify (i.e. one man my teacher met, a very fit guy who just graduated from Cornell or Dartmouth [I forget which] was denied a position because they deemed him too schedule-oriented).

You can always try out and not accept the position if you make it, though. I think it's an awesome idea, I've always thought of doing it. I respect anyone who goes through with it.[/font]

I have wanted to join the peace corps. ever since I had to debate about it a couple years ago. During my research of the organization, I found several negatives and several positives... Unfortunately I forgot most of them since that was two years ago. I do remember reading about what Lunox was saying.

But hey, you should still give it a try. I plan on doing it once I graduate from college.

I have always been interested in joining the Peace Corps, but at the same time, I've always been really intimidated. I'm graduating from university this year, though, and I think it's something I really want to do.

I'm currently in a relationship, which makes the whole "Go live in another country for two years!" thing a lot more complicated, though.
