My Chemical Romance for "emos" only?

I greatly disagree with the title of my thread, because I know a lot of people who listen to My Chemical Romance and who aren't "emo."

I was in an AOL chatroom a few minutes ago and they were talking about My Chemical Romance being just for "emo" kids who "cry themselves to sleep at night." (Oh, lots of quotation marks...)

A girl was defending MCR and said that just because there's some screaming in a few MCR songs and the clothing they wear is black doesn't mean they're "emo." I simply said that I agreed with her, and somehow, it turned into a 10-against-2 people battle.

According to the people we were going against, they said the following:
"My Chemical Romance wants kids to cry themselves to sleep."
"Their songs are only about death."
"They're the reason for teen suicide."

Oh, and this one made me very mad.
"Everyone that listens to MCR cuts theirselves."

Okay. I know some of you may agree, but that's wrong. Back in seventh grade, I did cut myself often and I listened to MCR. (I know: stupid thing to do. I've already gotten the 3-hour-long lectures about it.) But I've stopped hurting myself.
My best friend listens to MCR and she has never cut herself on purpose.
Although, I do have friends that cut and they're hard-core MCR fans.

I think that saying "Don't judge a book by its cover" goes well here.

Personally, I think it's all bullcrap. Cradle of Filth sing about death, they're not emo. Same as Marilyn Manson. Most bands get dragged down into a silly stereotype, and you'll find most fans tend to conform to the given stereotype. If they do that, then they're not real music fans, they're just sheep. No offence to anyone intended.

I just ignore it and listen to whatever the hell I want and give the middle finger to anyone who says I can't because I'm not 'this or that', or anyone who takes the p*** out of my music taste.

Emo isn't cutting yourself. And you're right. MCR will never hope of being emo. I mean. To be an emo/screamo band, you at least have to scream, without having a pile of pop choruses around every turn... It's in the name of the genre, and most of the bands tend to have a large influence from hardcore punk also. MCR had a good mix, with a few traits taken from early screamo bands on their debut, but now. It's all gone. Emo itself shouldn't be used as a stereotype anyway. People should learn it's a genre, and a fine taste in music. The stereotype is appropriately called "scene". Which is not a style of music. It's just scene, and won't offend people that actually like emo music. Myself, for one.

Also, here is one for you. MCR doesn't want you to cut yourselves. They could probably care less if you do or not. So anyone does so, in my mind is just immature. This also offends me very much. Once again. This is not emo. And never will be, unless it some how turns into chaotic music driven with emotion spurred from the original hardcore punk movement. I think it won't, however.

Saying that MCR is responsible for teen suicide is like saying Marilyn Manson is responsible for Columbine... And anyone who makes those assumptions is very ignorant.

It's ridiculous to even suggest.

That being said, I can't deny the fact that MCR tends to attract the darker scene/emo kids. But that doesn't mean everone who listens to it is a scene/emo kid. I listen to them occasionally, (Mostly only "Ghost of You") and my music scene leans more toward Indie stuff. That doesn't make me emo. Just eclectic.

And anyone who tells you they only listen to one kind of music is either a poser or simply uneducated. And when that's the case, well, you can't help but feel sorry for them.

Some people are just so obsessed with image, especially when it comes to music.

In my view, simply listen to what you enjoy and don't be too concerned about what others think. I think Darren said it best there.

All I did was state my opinion, and then I was going to drop back out of the conversation. Then the people brought up the emo topic, and that kinda hit a nerve for me.

I can understand how if can hit a nerve for you Lady Aura. I never considered My Chemical Romance to be emo. The band actually said in a interview once that I saw that their fans tell them how their music helped them stop cutting.

I really can't see an argument that would support My Chemical Romance being emo with out repeating the same lines over. Especially sense I've been in that argument before. Trying to label music is tricky, some music artist can go in different categories that you can't pin point what they are. Kid Rock for example has been both country and rock for a while at least to me.

Listen to what you feel is good music. If you let others get to you then it's showing that you are allowing others to disrupted your taste in music.

I personally am a My Chemical Romance fan and so is my dad. My dad is far from what you would expect to be a fan, being that he is a man that works at the airport for the government.

Even if MCR are considered "emo," which I personally don't think they are, great music is defined by the passion that goes into it, not by the genre. I don't think that MCR are "great," in fact I don't really like them at all, but classing them as emo and then degrading them because of it is just plain stupid.

I mostly don't like them, though, because Gerard Way is one of those people (much like Tom DeLonge) that I just find inherently punchable. I just see him and want to hit him, and then he opens his mouth and I want to hit him more.

But, you see, I have a reason for disliking them, and don't do it simply because they are seen by some people as "emo."

My Chemical Romance is labeled emo, Coheed and Cambria is labeled emo. The thing is both bands have emotion in them, but nothing about them is emo. People that say that, don't know what they're talking about.

But yeah, listen to Whoa Mann, he knows what he's talking about.

"He looks like a guy I'd like to punch" is hardly a better reason to dislike a band than "They're emo."

Haha I noticed that CoC made it on an "emo musician" list. The only real emo band listed in fact was Rites of Spring. It just doesn't make sense. Sigh. I guess next bands like Nickelback and Avenged Sevenfold will be labeled "emo" too. Ha.
