The Moment of Truth: Our Entertainment at the Cost of People's Relationships

Yes, I said it. Anyone who watches the Moment of Truth, sees it as very entertaining. Well to me, it is. And anyone who watches the Moment of Truth knows that they ask very personal questions, and if the contestants answer, whether it be true or false, it would effect the person's relationship with their mates, children or bosses. I want to know if you would keep these kinds of shows on the air, or would you not even think about the idea. Remember, the truth will be revealed!!!! Heeheehee.....

We have a show (and you probably do too) called Nothing But the Truth which hooks them up to a lie detector. If you ask me, it's their own fault for going on the stupid shows (mostly for money, greedy buggers) if their relationships goes to hell.

I'm not familiar with this show, but most of Reality TV is based on the notion of Better Living Through the Humiliation of Others.

American Idol, for example, tests my faith in humanity. Surely those people must have at least one friend or family member who loves them?

I mean, I'm all for snarky comments and the embarrassment of my loved ones, but we keep it personal. That's how they know I love them. Even I draw the line at encouraging someone to humiliate themselves on national television.

I love that show, but I feel bad for watching it. Especially when people cry.

I always tell myself, "Come on, Emily, you have better things to do than watch people cry over something a loved one did." But I can't stop watching.

I admit, I love this show. I mean, sure people are stupid enough to go on this show, when the truth will come out, but it's they're fault. And not all the time is this results of greed, sometimes people just strive for more money to help the family, when some of the questions asked just achieve the opposite result.

It's sort of vicarious of us to watch and keep watching at the result of people's suffering. I mean, I don't feel sorry for a mass majority of the people on there, but once and a while there is someone who doesn't deserve they're family ruined.

I do the same thing actually. Those kind of shows lose their entertainment value very quickly in my opinion. After a while, it just makes me cringe to watch what people will do - all in the name of getting on TV. XP

Yup, I've been unlucky enough to see this show.

My feeling is that if the contestants and their families are happy enough to appear there, then that's really up to them.

I don't think they can complain about horrifying revelations if they've already agreed to some form of public embarassment beforehand. I mean, they would know what the whole point of the show is...so they can't really be surprised when they hear things they don't want to hear.

I figure that if a family wants to go on that show, then either they know so much about either other that they're incredibly close (maybe a little too close)...or they're just so horribly ignorant about the nature of the world that they kind of deserve the shock, lol.

I mean, I don't think anyone could be "accidentally" roped into going on a show of this nature. If that were the case, then again, maybe that person deserves to experience the consequences of their ignorance. *shrug*

If you want any proof that humans are really just a bunch of monsters in pretty skin who live off of the pain and anguish of others, just watch reality shows. That's my whole take on the whole thing. The Moment of Truth just puts the icing on the cake.

Not all reality shows are painfully stupid. What about the Baby Borrowers? Or Wife Swap? And it's not like I live off of reality shows, I live off of Spongebob and The Powerpuff Girls, too.

No one is saying you only watch reality shows CrimsonKnight. It's more of personal taste in shows and I quit watching reality shows because all they did was get dumber and dumber and even more stupid over the years. I rarely last more than ten minutes if I happen to catch one since I find them painfully stupid. So I end up switching to something else.

It's not that people don't understand you, it's more like you're not grasping the fact that it's all a preference. If you think reality shows are good or whatever, then good for you, but don't try to knock someone for not sharing your opinion. In other words. Chill out.

As far as me and the moment of truth (and other reality shows), I tend to stay away from them. While some may be entertaining at first (Hells Kitchen), they don't hold my my interest long enough for me to stick with them.

I've seen commercials for this show, but I have to admit I would never watch it. Two reasons.

1) What you do or don't do is your own personal business. Why use it to embarrass yourself just for money?

2) If you really love the person you're with (in the case of romantic relationships), shouldn't you ... not keep secrets from them anyway?

It's just a silly idea for a show, if you ask me. I don't totally make myself out to be a saint, though. I watch the American Idol try-outs just for the bad ones. I adore Nanny 911 as a sort of "what not to do when raising your children" thing.

But as far as "Date My Ex", "Nothing but the Truth", "Cheaters", "Wife Swap", all those types of things I stay away from. "Baby Borrowers", however, is a good idea.

I went through a short phase of watching reality shows, but they always seemed to be the same... kind of dumb. So that phase was very brief since it got old real fast.

Now, anytime a new one pops up, I don't even bother to watch it. If I catch one while looking to see what's on, I rarely last more than ten minutes. It's like a certain level of stupidity is inherent in all of them. o_O If you like it then that's your thing, but for me? I'll pass.

The Moment of Truth is pure, unadulterated crap. By their own admission the people going through the process are already asked these questions before hand, in the preliminary lie detector test, so why is it surprising to them when the question pop up? Surely they can't be that shocked if they've already been asked, perhaps they're under contract to "ham it up" and shed a few crocodile tears for the sake of the ratings.

The only reality shows I'll watch are the Baby Borrowers and Hells Kitchen. Baby Borrowers actually provides some life lessons for the teens going through it and Hells Kitchen is a refining fire for those aspiring chefs attempting to run their own restaurant. Gordon Ramsay may swear like a train, but he knows his stuff and while the show is full of ratings winning drama, there is also plenty to be learnt from the show, for the contestants and the viewers.

Moment of Truth is a glorified gossip fest which plummets to the depths of "who sleeps with who" and those "shock" mystery guest questioners. Ugly telly at it ugliest.
