Yup, I know that Spongebob is for kids, and I'm a teenager, so I'm not supposed to like it. Next to Yu-Gi-Oh GX, I can't get enough of that show, which probably explains why I'm always so happy. To get to the point, I think whoever doesn't like Spongebob is not happy. People who love Spongebob, express it. Those who don't......you are a sad, sad group of people.:animedepr

...Yeah Allamorph, I guess you're a sad being, I pity you. Wait, I don't like Spongebob either... dammit.

But seriously, people who don't watch spongebob are just as happy as people who do watch it, in fact, I'm happier that I don't watch it anymore.

I like Spongebob much more than I'd thought I would. I used to watch it with the kids I babysat a few years ago, and it had some really clever, memorable lines and conversations. I can't speak for newer episodes or anything, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much it avoided gross-out humor and went instead for quirkiness.

If nothing else, it was miles and miles better than the other stuff kids that age tend to watch. I'll take Spongebob over old Mary Kate & Ashley movies or Thomas the Tank Engine or CG Barbie movies any day, thanks.

List of American children's cartoons better thanSpongebob Squarepants:
Freakazoid
Animaniacs
Dexter's Laboratory
Johnny Bravo
Powerpuff Girls
Pinky and the Brain
Batman: The Animated Series
Fairly Oddparents
The Flintstones
The Jetsons
Scooby-Doo
Danny Phantom
Courage the Cowardly Dog
Tiny Toon Adventures
Looney Toons

The list goes on, but I don't feel like naming any more names. This isn't even counting anime or stuff like The Simpsons or Family Guy. No live-action shows, either.

I will say this: The first few seasons of Spongebob were pretty decent. The writing was kind of funny, it was pretty original and the gags made sense. After a while, though, they got to relying too much on shock value and jokes that make no sense. I really have no idea how it became so incredibly popular, though. It never really was anything special. If you want to restrict the comparison to Nick, Fairly Oddparents was funnier for longer, only having lost the magic touch about 2 years ago. After that, it's all been downhill (seriously, a baby? Why?)

But yeah, I can tolerate Spongebob. I'd just prefer Freakazoid.

I'll never grow out of SpongeBob. I've watched it since the first episode in... 2001? 2000? Somewhere around there.

I even play my little cousin's PS2 SpongeBob games when I go to his house. He gets mad because I'll play it for hours.

The Fairly Odd Parents and Courage the Cowerdly Dog are two of my favorites. The latter being one of the funniest shows in CN history. Family Guy is my favorite cartoon of all time as well.

Now I admit there are a few episodes of Spongebob that make me laugh, like the one where they sell Chocolate... haha funny episode.

I just used this word in another post, but I'll have to use it again.

Spongebob Squarepants is fabulous. It's so offbeat and quirky, I love whoever made it. Some of the songs that they made for it just, like, hilarious in a gay rollerskating disco way. And with a dash of the sophisticated humor that Solo mentioned. I have no idea where all the hate comes from, it's probably one of the most original tv shows I've ever seen.

It kicks the hell out of stuff like Family Guy.

GOD, I Hate Family Guy So Much. Die, Seth McFarlane.

YESSS!!! I LOVE THESE SHOWS!!! But once when I was 5, I was watching a C.T.C.D episode with some weird mummy going "Return the sla~ab!". It got a little freaky after a few minutes and I ran out of the room...and now it's my favorite episode!!! But, Ace, you forgot to add the great INVADER ZIM!!! That has to be the greatest non-anime cartoon show! But that is just my opinion, if you disagree, I respect that, so don't shoot me.

I've seen previews of Spongebob, but that's about as far as I've seen. I'd much rather watch them other shows that I've never seen before. Doug and Hey Arnold. And even then, I still wouldn't watch those either.

I agree with SayianPrincess. Cartoons in the 80s and 90s were great, and nowdays, cartoons aren't about squat except for being quirky and "original". But then again, me and the word "quirky" don't get along anyway. I think the only type quirky cartoons I watched back then was Scooby Doo, Looney Toons, (Bugs and Daffy.. Anything affiliated with them) Animaniacs, and Tom and Jerry. And then there was Darkwing Duck and Ducktales. (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles triumphs all)

Shows like Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ren and Stimpy, Beavis and Butthead, Powerpuff Girls (And other Cartoon Cartoon type shows) never appealed to me.

No, they really aren't :p I'm shocked at what I used to consider amazing. I used to love the Turtles and He-Man and Thundercats but watching them now, God they're embarrassingly poor. I can appreciate decent structure and writing in a series, but some of the way these series were done were apalling even by old standards. I can't actually watch the old series of Transformers or Turtles because of how badly they've aged and how much more I expect of my storylines and episode structure. Blimey, even my all-time favourite series I used to completely adore above all else, Visionaries, after watching an episode again I'm mortified at how badly it compares to a lot of stuff about nowadays.

I don't like some shows for their animation style; I also don't like some shows because they're trying to ride on the success of the channel, animation company or another similar show. But animations have been doing that for decades already anyway. Knee-jerk "It's new, it's rubbish, give me back what I'm used to!" reactions in response to cartoons and things really are a bugbear of mine, heh.

I like, aside from SpongeBob, Fairly Odd Parents; I used to love Hey Arnold! and occasionally Doug; Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs were amazing (I still have a soundtrack for Animaniacs, heh. Baby Looney Toons is quite fun as well, actually. I haven't watched any of the more 'serious' animation that appears on Jetix or CN for ages, though, so I can't compare much of those. Except Beast Wars and Beast Machines Amazingly underappreciated.

*sighs* I don't care what anybody says. Whoever doesn't watch Spongebob is bound to be happier watching it. I hate Family Guy! Kudos to everyone who enjoys Spongebob and I'm shaking my head in mourning for those who don't. :animedepr

You forgot the 24 Hour Clock Coverage show and Teleshopping.

Spongebob is irritating. It's one of those shows that tries to be really random and funny, but fails epically. I've been forced to watch Spongebob with my little cousin and I swear I was scared what it was doing to the kid.

Dude, chill, please. You have a habit of mildly flipping out when anyone disagrees with you. It's just a matter of opinion, so try not to take it so personally. :p

Compared to some other of today's cartoons, Spongebob really shines. I'd go so far as to say it's the best cartoon on Nick, if not across Disney and Cartoon Network as well. (Although I haven't watched Cartoon Network very much lately; the last time I did I was bombarded by fart noises and bathroom humor. Not cool, CN).

I find it funny and unique; whenever I end up watching it I will definitely laugh. Even my father, who only finds humor in Seinfeld and Mel Brooks movies, has burst into gigglefits watching Spongebob. He would actually sit down and put the TV on Nick to watch it. That was shocking.

Oh, and for people who think that cartoons from the 90's are much better than Spongebob...it first aired in 1999.

Hear, hear. Everyone who hates Spongebob Squarepants is simply just too serious for their own good. ;)

I don't really watch western cartoons as avidly as when I was little, but I do know that not everything made in the 2000s is "crap".

Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends is a pretty kickin' cartoon, very original, but more importantly just plain fun to watch. The idea is sort of ingenious, it reminds me of Monsters, Inc., and it started in 2004. Dude, and Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is probably one of the best tv shows in general that I've ever seen.

Can we just turn this into a cartoon rant thread? Probably not, so I'll part with this: The Venture Brothers and Futurama kick so much *** out of Family Guy.

For your information, squirt, "dude" has by now lost all ties to one gender or the other. It is most commonly used when expressing sincere appreciation or, as in this case, when the speaker feels the addressee is being a dweeb. Ease up or hush up, one.

Lunox, I'd say it's fairly obvious that I am one of the least serious people on these boards. :p So that argument just don't hold water with me. Although I don't recall Thundercats with quite as much fondness as I recall Snagglepuss or Secret Squirrel.

Hanna-Barbara > most modern cartoons.

Speaking of modern cartoons, I actually rather appreciate and usually enjoy Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. Very clever show there, lovable cast, and they don't seem to feel the need to rely on the same old gags day in and day out. Plus Goo Goo is a hoot.
