So, have you ever realized that you or your friends of asian descent all turn red when they ingest alcohol? I would've never believed it if I hadn't seen it prom night. Someone spiked my Laotian friend's drink and within the first five minutes he began doing the best lobster imitation I've ever seen. Bright red, and welts all over. Apparently his entire clan is allergic to alcohol. Another friend, also Laotian was at a party and she had one shout. Count em. One. And immediately the same thing happened to her. So of course, when the R.A.s inevitably broke up the party I uttered the age old words that somehow were bought by the second year student stupid enough to sign up for the job of making sure hormonally charged teenagers didn't drink.

"Oh it's just a bad sunburn."

Now I've seen this in Chinese girls too. They take one drink and alternately waffle between magenta and fire engine red while sometimes also losing their voice entirely. I'm told there's nothing that's to be done besides studiously avoid anything remotely alcoholic and also hurting yourself repeatedly when you get the urge to drink. I for one turn a mottled light pink color and start to get immediately overheated, but I hear the heat part is just natural and not because of my Chinese/German heritage. I was hopping the German side would keep the asian glow away but it turns out that just means I don't get completely thrashed after one drink.

Do you have asian glow? Have you seen? Mocked? Laughed at? Well I can't blame you there...I can even laugh at myself.

I go quite red when I used to drink as well. It makes photographs at parties look a bit stupid as well. I think it's just being flushed are something - I've noticed a few of my friends don't go red at all. It might be because they were tons of make up though, I'm not too sure.

Haha, I know *exactly* what you're talking about. I think I'll use your excuse if an RA ever comes knocking.

Fortunately for moi, I'm only half, so I don't get very red. I look like maybe I put on too much blush, but that's about it. ^^;

I know other people though, that get entirely red, regardless of how long they've been drinking. They were Chinese and Vietnamese. Although curiously enough other Asians I know (besides myself) don't get red at all. O.o;

I'm Korean myself, and I don't get red when I consume alcohol. Neither do my parents, or any of my relatives, for that matter. Maybe we're immune to it or something. :P

Though I do know that a lot of Asians don't handle alcohol well, so that may be a part of it.

According to something which I read somewhere a while ago and don't have a link to....lol...

Many asians don't possess a certain enzyme that helps break apart alcohol. Thus resulting in an "asian-red" flushed appearance. I'm asian. It's definitely in my family's blood. We get red. First, it's a cute blushing pink in the cheeks, but if a lot more alcohol is ingested or given a little time after the first drink, we turn bright red. All over the face, in the eyes, and I get large red blots all over my body like a sunburn. Didn't realized my body turned red until one night when I took a shower afterwards. I think it's pretty neat looking actually-- except my face gets too red sometimes. I'm not a drinker, and quite underweight, so it'll take half a bottle of beer to effect me.

I have a cousin who has dark brown skin, so when he drinks, he's a glowing reddish bronze color; looks pretty incredible.

When some people see us red, they assume it's a low and even sad tolerance to alcohol.

Note that I'm not precise about why, but I remember reading a pretty reliable article on it. Someone can look it up and clarify it for us if they want.

My boyfriend is full Korean, and he doesn't get very red when he drinks but his brother definetly does! He told me their dad gets red too, but their mom doesn't.

My tendency to blush after ingesting alcohol is something I got from my Hispanic maternal side. Unlike my full-blooded Filipino relatives whose capillaries seem to ignore the effects of alcohol, my maternal relatives go very red when drunk. I have a pinkish sort of blush, like it's being tempered by my father's blood. Very pretty, especially against mestiza skin.

I honestly don't know of anyone with East Asian descent who turns red when drunk. Then again, they all are chino mestizos.

Everyone I've met at college who drinks and has some Asian decent does what you are talking about Raiha. They get that flushed look as if they are sunburned. I've also seen that among others too but usually for them it's not as prominent.
Ok before anyone gets upset I clicked no but I didn't read it carefully.
No one can see which option you chose on the poll. =P So just answer the question instead. Besides, Raiha, the thread creator, was just being sarcastic with how she worded the second option so I wouldn't take it too seriously.
