chibi-master
Okay, the question is simple, I hope. What kind of movies do you like? I for one, enjoy comedy/action! If I can't get that mix, I usually go for comedy. As long as it's actually funny. I do not tolerate crappy jokes in movies. Or puns. *shudders* So, how 'bout you?:animesmil
Sara
Two of my favorite movies are Stardust and The Princess Bride, so if anyone can come up with other movies in the High Fantasy/Comedy/Romance/Adventure genre, I'd love to hear them. I'd say that Labyrinth fits as well.
Shinmaru
The closest I can think of is Robin Hood: Men in Tights, haha. (Which, oddly enough, shares its lead actor with The Princess Bride. :P) It's not quite the level of fantasy of The Princess Bride, and its romance definitely isn't as appealing, but I think the movie is underrated as a comedy. I haven't seen it in a few years, though, so maybe my opinion would change on another viewing. Everything else I can dredge up doesn't quite fit the bill -- Monty Python and the Holy Grail has next to no romance (and I'm 99.9 percent sure you've already seen it), and neither does Time Bandits (I like the visuals and direction in that more than the story, anyway). Anyone else? lol Comedy is my preferred genre -- the darker, the better, though I'll never turn down a nice, light comedy if it's really funny. I've also got a terrible weakness for film noir. The stories make more sense the less you think about them, but I love the pure style of film noir -- the look, the way the characters act and speak, and the worlds they show. Science-fiction and horror are down on the next rung; if they're good, I'm there. I'm starting to enjoy musicals the more I watch them, as well. If I've got three hours to spare, you can be sure as **** I'll be filling them with My Fair Lady. :)
Claire
I don't really like genres as a whole, or at least my favorite movies are a conglomeration of types or just set themselves apart from the one genre they're in. For instance, one of my top 3 favorite movies is Clue. In essence it's a comedic murder mystery, but I'm not such a big fan of today's comedies. (Will Ferrell, I'm looking at you). I usually really like Tim Burton's remakes, but as for originals I only care for Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and Big Fish. Beetlejuice is actually pretty much my most favorite movie at the moment. I was never interested in Corpse Bride and I could hardly sit through Nightmare Before Christmas, I was actually bored. I'm in love with psychological/mystery type movies, such as Donnie Darko, The Ring, and The Chumscrubber. Anything that is best when viewed at 3 AM is great. I'm also a sucker for genuine romance, but really the only movie I've seen that (I believe) fits this category is Titanic. The historic aspect is also a plus for that one. I like some musicals, but not all. I also like some movies in the "High Fantasy/Comedy/Romance/Adventure genre" that Sara described, like Labyrinth, but I couldn't pay much attention to it's predecessor, The Dark Crystal. I think I'm just weird.
DeLarge
I've never particularly based my opinions of films on their genre, if I'm honest. I tend to like films if they speak to me on some personal level, if they affect me in some way. For example, one of my favourite films of all time is High Fidelity, because every single time I watch it, I end up wanting to own a record shop. Another favourite is True Romance, and another is Wayne's World. As you can see, none of these three really share a genre, apart from all being funny in one way or another. I tend to like films if they're quirky in some way - High Fidelity is a romantic comedy of sorts where the protagonist is totally hopeless in love, True Romance is a love story with violence, drugs and the Mob, and Wayne's World, I have to say, is Mike Myers and his particular brand of comedy at it's best. I also loved Stardust, because it's so funny in an incredibly British sort of way. The same goes for Hot Fuzz, another of my favourites. So I don't really prefer any genre over all the others, I tend to pick and choose the best parts of different genres. Although I suppose that you could argue that all the films I've mentioned here are comedies in some shape.
Magus
Much like anime, action is my preferred genre. But that don't mean I like every action movie I come across. For instance, I'm a big fan of the Bourne series as well as Batman Begins, but I can't stand Shoot Em Up or the X-Men films. I do branch out in movies with different genres though. Every once in a while I do enjoy a good comedy but none of this like Borat, Road Trip, Clerks, American Pie, or any other movie that mainly targets the 17-20 year old crowds. I tend to stick with Pulp Fiction, Bruce Almighty, and movies involving Tyler Perry as Madea. I don't know where movies like Ocean's Eleven and Italian Job fit into, but I watch those as well as some "Who did it" flicks. I tend to stay away from the horror genre mainly because they do nothing for me. The only horror movie(s) I'd actually watch but it's more of a suspense/thriller type is Scream.
chibi-master
I think I'd like horror a bit more if the people didn't lack so much common sense. I mean, c'mon! If you hear some freaky noises coing from your basement or attic, don't go in them to see what it is! Hide somewhere, leave the house or make someone you dislike go investigate! And if it comes for you, get some weapons or something! If you are sad and unfortunate and have none on hand, RUN!!! Don't sit there and scream your head off! I know the writers are trying to develop a plot by making the character do this, but seriously, there are some limits on human stupidity, no matter how few!:animesigh
Darren
I don't think I could ever decide... It has to be an exceptional movie, which really applies to any genre... I definitely like Sci-fi/fantasy movies a lot just because that's where my aesthetic interests lie. But maybe, because I love that genre so much, I'm too picky to like anything. My most recent favorite movie is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I also like Cry Wolf, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Donnie Darko, Reservoir Dogs, and many more...
SaiyanPrincessX
Action and comedy, sci-fi/fantasy. I love martial arts flicks, and I don't mean the ones where they fly off roof tops with the tips of their toes, I can't stand that. Ong Bak is amazing. I really like war/military movies a lot, from modern war to ancient battles. Historical battles are awesome, even if they arn't entirely accurate. Movies such as Gladiator, or Enemy at the Gates. G.I. Jane is also a fav! I'm picky with comedies. I love the 80s, 90s, comedy era. Such as Ace Ventura, Hot Shots, Men at Work, Ghost Busters, The Great Outdoors. Jim Carrey style, Robin Williams, Dan Akroyd. Those types. I also truelly enjoy the old Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers. I don't like most of the comedy that is spewed out now days. Will Farrell is crap, I don't find him remotely funny. I think they try too hard to be funny now. :/ General action movies such as Indiana Jones, the Bourne series, 007, Batman, Terminator, Matrix, The Mummys. All great movies. Plus many more. Harry Potter is a good fantasy series, Serenity. I also like some romantic/comedies. I don't usually go for pure romance movies, not my cup of tea. But if its laced with good comedy I can enjoy it. French Kiss is a great example. I don't watch horror movies, ever. I don't like musicals atall. *cringe*
Lunar
Me? Well I like basically all kinds of movies-except for romance. Bleh. I especially love horror movies and comedy. Not really a fan of action. Dramas are ish, simply because they sometimes relate to romance. I'm not much for musicals, except for Sweeny Todd with Johnny Depp.:animesmil
Aberinkula
I like comedy most of all, Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the dead are my favorite movies. I like horror too, but not the senseless violance of some movies, the slasher-flick kind bug me. Horror movies like Shutter and Saw are my favorites, they aren't scary per se, but they give you chills. I can't stand action movies at all (my favorite movies above being exceptions) they just don't get me, drama movies sometimes, but not always. I also like Sci-fi and Fantasy films, like Stardust and Harry Potter, as well as Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children.
