Slang. Sort of.
Pop vs. Soda is a big debate every September where I live... the freshmen come into the dorm and all hell breaks loose when the Minnesotans and the Wisconsinites meet each other and inevitably clash over carbonated beverages.
South of England doesn't tend to use either term; 'soda' referes to 'soda water' and pop is more used in the North, I think. We just tend to refer to the drinks by type (lemonade, coke, etc). Collectively they're just 'soft drinks'. Makes things easier but more complex, I guess.
Kansas is pretty neutral in terms of regional accent or slang, which makes it all the weirder when I hear someone saying the one genuine oddity that I'm familiar with here, "warsh" (in place of "wash"). Quite often I'll hear someone conversing like a completely normal, competent person, and suddenly when they mention that they have to go home and "WARSH some clothes," it's like a thick-browed, overall-wearing redneck just jumped out of their mouth and sucker-punched me. What the hell?
Haha! I know exactly what you mean! Another Kansas thing is pronouncing the Arkansas river like [Are]Kansas instead of how it's meant to be. That bugs the crap out of me, but that could just be a state pride thing that caught on.
I was born and raised in the Midwest, and I have never heard a green pepper called anything but a green pepper, or "mango" used to refer to anything but the tropical fruit or the related color.
I wasn't born in the midwest, but I've lived here for almost 15 years. I've noticed it mainly in small towns in the older generation (we're talking 80 years old).

Being from Texas, you would think we have a lot of slang....and you're right. Mainly it's reserved for Eastern Texas and Northern Texans. There is a lot of "Y'all-ing" to be had there. I've heard Soda referred to as POP, but for the most part we use Coke as an all inclusive phrase to mean Soda. For instance....

"Hey Korey, you want a Coke?"

"Sure."

"What kind?"

"Pepsi"

Yeah, you don't know 'bout us Texans. ;)

As for myself, I talk more like a Californian. I use the words "Bro" and "Cuz" (for cousin) to refer to people the time. I'm sure I probably abuse "Dude" a lot too. I dunno why, it's just what I do.
"Hey Korey, you want a Coke?"

"Pepsi"

Yeah, you don't know 'bout us Texans. ;)
Nah, that goes for pretty much the entire south at least up to Oklahoma. I was raised calling everything Coke, but when I moved to Kansas I knew I'd have to change to either "pop" or "soda," or nobody would ever understand me (I chose "soda" since I have a few ounces of dignity).
I hate the phrase "Y'all". When I was in Israel, they actually had merchandise like mugs, and pins, and other random trinkets that said "Shaloam Y'all". *cringe*
:(

Y'all need to calm down and recognize how perfect the word y'all is - a contraction of you and all that is reasonable and comfortable.

Y'all have the right to an opinion, but y'all definitely should realize how wonderful the word "y'all" is and embrace it as your own.
The biggest thing I've noticed around here is people dropping the "r" out of words, like saying geen instead of green. o_O I had an English teacher who would verbally smack you if you did that though so I lost that habit pretty quick.
I've also heard weird things like wolf instead of wolves... It's like they make things short instead of simply saying what they really mean. I find the dropping the "r" the most annoying though.
Probably the biggest or weirdest slang for me is the lack of swearing. If you're serious about your faith, you don't do it. So people end up using something else instead. Like FINE! Instead of the F-word. I've heard some really odd phrases that make no sense when people make something up instead. XP
That always makes me laugh, all the silly replacements they come up with. Because in the end, the intent is the same so it just about doesn't matter what word they use. =P
Oh and saying "you guys" is pretty standard instead of other things like y'all. And the debate over soda or pop doesn't really exist since I hear both all the time. =P
Yeah, I rarely hear something like y'all and when I do... it just sounds out of place. I tend to use soda myself, but I've heard both and think nothing of it really.
