Lunar
Okay, I'm more prone to fallilng than most people, and I want to skateboard. Scratch that. I know how to skateboard, as in riding without falling. But I really want to learn tricks...so here's the question: should i continue trying to be a skaterchick or avoid skateparks and skateboards all together? And another question.... any tips on how to lessen my chances of falling?:animedepr
nezzyjean
My advice would be to invest in a helmet and some knee & elbow pads...sure you might look kind of lame, but atleast you won't be hurting yourself. You could also try improving your balance and coordination by balancing books on your head and trying to walk around? meh..maybe not. you know what they say: practice, practice, practice! Lunar
I've tried balancing books on my head, now I am less clumsy, but still clumsy. As for elbow pads and knee pads, I don't really hurt my elbows or my knees or my head.
The13thMan
If you like to skate then you should definitely continue. And skating is great practice for keeping your balance. I'm sure if you keep at it you'll be less clumsy. But maybe not... i'm not clumsy so i don't really understand it. But being clumsy's not that bad. Guys think it's cute. =D
Lunar
okay, I'll keep at it, but still, more advice to not fall??? you guys' advice is good, but keep it coming.=)
Drizzt Do'urden
Though I've never really skateboareded myself (Though in some weird way I've dated a skaterchick or two) I have snowboarded (Which neither "skaterchick" I've dated has done....weird). My first time actually making it down something other than a "bunny" slope made me 10ft. Tall and bullet proof. So I tried hitting up some of the rails...needles too say OUCH. So I kept practicing over and over and over and over again. And now I can....wait for it....snowboard a lot better but still can't hit the damn rails. Moral of the story....If you don't just try the trick and practice you'll never get any better. Though you may learn to ride the skateboard down a hill faster? Lunar
Riding down a hill??? yeah, not gonna happen. I ride in my driveway, that's probably the highest incline i'm gonna get to. i know i won't ever learn anything, but i'm not going to try until i get a little bit better.
Allamorph
i know i won't ever learn anything, but i'm not going to try until i get a little bit better.[/FONT']
Logic fail. Lessee how to put this gently . . . . umm . . . . You're going to fall. At some point or another, you will wipe the heck out and get banged the heck up. It happens. I'd been riding bikes for three years (not solid) when I rode over a sandy patch at high speeds, sent my bike sailing over someone's yard, and took a crash course in body-surfing on mini-cobbled pavement. It hurt like the dickens?but not as bad as Dickens?and when they put iodine on me I wished I was still sliding across asphalt, but I kept riding. So yeah. Wipe-outs are inevitable. Just don't let that stop you. And when you do wipe out, make sure you take pains not to do again whatever it was you did wrong. That's the trick. :p (I also killed a lamppost while I was learning to ride. But that's beside the point.)
Rachmaninoff
Like Allamorph just said, if you don't try, how can you get better? I'd recommend trying some of the easier moves first and then slowly work on harder ones once you get the simple ones down. But definitely don't do nothing, you'll never get better if you're not at least trying to learn.

Allamorph, I'm a girl, so I don't want to get banged up really bad, I know it happens, but I'm really trying to avoid it, considering that falling happens to me more than most people.....so what would you advise to not fall while attempting a trick?
Allamorph
Allamorph, I'm a girl, so I don't want to get banged up really bad,[/COLOR']
I'm a guy, and I don't particularly take to getting banged up really bad. I don't know many people who do. But you can't figure out how to do something the right way without doing it the wrong way a few times and then going "oooohhhhhh, I see...." And it just so happens that skateboarders are prone to getting hurt because skateboarding is a physical activity. A few scrapes aren't going to kill you, and certainly won't disfigure you or make you look bad. And besides, a girl being willing to get a little banged up is pretty durn cool to a lot of guys (and kind of intimidating to some girls, I've heard).
Lunar
I'm pretty banged up enough already and skateboarding is a third priority, drawing is my second, and getting an M.D. is my first. And a smart girl is intimidating to guys too, not just a girl that's willing to get a little banged up.

Quoth Serenity
ok there are two things about me; the first is that i am the clumsiest person in the world, i find it hard to walk ten meters over flat ground without falling. and second i spend half my time on a bike
And it just so happens that skateboarders are prone to getting hurt because skateboarding is a physical activity. Drizzt Do'urden
Well it's been awhile since you started this thread and have gotten some inupt. So tell us Lunar, have you learned any new tricks yet?
Lunar
:animedeprwell...............no. I've just recently moved and i have school, so i can't. i'm working on this one trick that deals with jumping, but i've only tried that once. i'm planning to learn how to put my foot on the skateboard so it can pop up and i can catch it. still trying, really messed up my legs. But there's this totally awesome skating park downtown, and i don't want to go there looking like a total idiot. Quoth Serenity, you are the second clumsiest person on earth, I am the first. *evil laugh*
