Harvest Season
September 22, GNC88

It's that time of year again. Military personnel have slowly been making their way into the village just like they did last year. They bring civilians with them that moved to different villages in prior years. They order all of us to take time off from harvesting in order to make our village acceptable. They raid our homes to ensure we haven't broken the firearms law. They live in our rooms, eat with our families, and drink our clean water. It's not as though my village hasn't been preparing for the military's arrival. In fact we always have a surplus this time of year for this very occasion, but that doesn't help my stomach settle any easier. The fact that a military officers are sleeping in mine and Grandpa's beds make my insides squirm. Where do we get to sleep? On the floor in the entrance room. At least they'll be out of here in a week. Then everything can go back to that facade of normality. I know better though.

My name's Henry and I live in the village of Udaya. I was born and raised with my grandparents, my parents, and my older brother Micah. It was a decent living. I remember when I was five, our family grew the best crops and Dad and Grandpa would travel to the other villages and sell them for a great income. They always promised to take Micah and I along when we were old enough. I had no idea that that day would never come for me. When I was six, my mother "won" the lottery along with six others. She was taken, like they always are, across the border of the great wall. I never saw her again. My grandmother "won" the next year and, she too, was never seen again.

Perhaps it's the way that I was raised that has led to my beliefs, but after my father lost both his wife and mother, he held a constant distaste for the government. He publicly protested the lottery and the next day, he wasn't in his bed when I woke up. The government assured us that he probably ran away and they would scan the country for his whereabouts. Of course, no one thought that. We all know he was probably killed, but we pretend he's fine and that he might have found a place where they don't practice the lottery. Lastly, two years ago, when Micah turned 19, he also "won" the lottery. Once again, he was taken across the border and I haven't seen him since. Now, it's just Grandpa and me. He tries his hardest to get around, but he's 86 and probably won't make it to next year's lottery. I have to do all the work, but I can't say I've got the green thumb like my grandfather. Things just don't seem to grow when I touch it. So our family has gone from the best farmers to the biggest winners of the lottery. A lot of good it has done us.

This year is different though. This year, I turn 17. This is the first year I get to participate in the lottery. Of course it's mandatory, but it's a big deal. It marks my transition into adulthood. There are 22 others in the village that are making the transition with me and they're all excited. Fools. Most of the folk in town seem to think that winning the lottery is a good thing, but it's like my father always used to say: "The lottery is a death sentence and anyone naive enough to believe differently deserve to die."

Let's just say that the lottery damages some, but helps others. There's even a festival this weekend to celebrate the coming of the lottery. I have to register for to make sure that I am present, and I get my own customizable lottery ball with my name and ID number on it. I think it would be a lot easier if they just lined the entire village up on a shooting range; it would probably be more cost effective, but there's nothing I can do about it. If I speak out like my father did, then I'll only die faster. I can only hope to die an old age like my grandfather will most likely do. Of course, he could still win in what is likely his last year to participate. I know he would rather die than win or live to see me win. We're all we have. I know it would kill him if I won.

So for now, I'll just have to put up with the soldiers, the rude commands, the constant grunt work and take care of my grandpa as best I can while this stranglehold remains for a week.

Brief History:
In the early 1920's a mysterious scientific accident occurred on the east coast of America, prompting the military to move all citizens westward. This was known as the 2nd Great Migration. Although it was different in its intent to the first, the 2nd Great Migration was believed to have saved millions of lives all throughout the country. There were few who elected to stay behind and were either killed by the government or by whatever the government was trying to protect them from. A great wall was constructed around America, literally sealing it off from Mexico. It was divided into two halves: The side behind the wall. (think of a line that intersects Montana and reaches into Canada as well) and those that were not.

Populations could not be easily contained in such a small area and therefor, immigration into Canada was forced and eventually these two counties removed borders and became one country: The Northern Great Continent. For a while, life progressed as normal, but laws were passed, which were supposedly for the citizens' protection which banned them from alcohol consumption, firearms possession, and eventually led to having no electricity at all. In fact, most big cities were leveled during this time and those that remained were turned into military camps. Civilians were prohibited from entering.

Shortly after that, the government registered all new citizens under the GNC and developed 100 great villages, which were now reduced to colonial living. These are the only villages allowed and civilians must live in one of them. Capture upon leaving a village without permission resulted in death. Soon thereafter, talk about before the wall was prohibited. Those who disagreed with the government disappeared over night and eventually the old days became taboo. Without contact from other countries, these colonial-esque villages live a life of ignorance, providing the perfect opportunity for the government to establish the lottery. Each year, there are 700 winners (7 from each village) who are transported behind the wall and never seen again. It's said to be a good thing, but some aren't so sure. It is a required annual process for everyone 17 and up and it has returned once again to claim it's next set of lucky winners.

You will play as one of the winners.

Welcome to The Lottery. This is a mature RPG, involving violence, language, and sex that some might not be comfortable with, so sign up with caution. Unfortunately I can't give you too much information or it would ruin the RP, but if you do have questions, feel free to ask away in the underground thread. This will be a short RPG and I want to point out that how you sign up, as well as decisions that you make in the RPG, will greatly effect the outcome of your gameplay. So try to be creative and original when signing up. (This means that I would like an array of different ages and backgrounds)

He lives in a small two bedroom house on the far edges of the village while attempting to take care of his grandfather and grow enough crops to support both of them. He's very short and might appear malnourished during the hard winter months, but this says nothing to Henry's inner strength and will power.
Personality: Henry is very hardworking and innocent. He tries to be nice to everyone, and even though he disagrees with the government's practices, he would never speak out against them. Name: Shali Vervain Strae

Age: 24

Gender: Female

Village: Orsys; a village that specializes in weaving and textiles, but also in fine sewn goods. The ratio of sheep to humans is roughly 30:1, with a number of shepherds keeping things in order.

Appearance: Always dresses simply, never showing off her own abilities on her body. She often wears black and purple together in a special weave her husband presented to her on their anniversary.

Occupation: Seamstress; specializing in embroidery and has some knowledge of weaving.

Background: Moved from Meton [Southern Montana] to Orsys [Idaho] for an arranged marriage with a weaver at the government's orders. Shali was relocated there when her talents with needle and thread became apparent in her teenage years. The government simply moved her to the closest village where she would be surrounded with the right materials to enhance her craft. In other words; she is rather busy. The move however was thinly disguised as a marriage between a weaver and sewer, with the only good news being that at least her man didn't drink, never beat her, and liked her cooking.

Milo himself has been a sweet husband, but Shali keeps herself from growing too in love with him, because she knows it's only a matter of time before he's taken away from her. Her daughter was taken, the first they had when she was 19. But she's hoping this time she's pregnant again.

Personality: Thoughtful, calm, contemplative, and slow to anger.

Background: Bailey was the fourth of five children, all boys. She remembers moving around some when she was younger, but her parents never would tell her where they had been. At 17 her father promised her to a local boy of 20, a merchants son, in exchange for goods etc. A month later, the boy was taken by the lottery. By that time she had already lost two brothers and an aunt to the process.
At 22 she went to work for her uncle the butcher as her brothers were all the help her father needed as a carpenter and being unwed she was expected to pull her weight. Part of this job included going on hunts with the men on the edge of the village. As they’re not allowed guns, they tend toward using traps and trained falcons. Some acquired guns to hunt bigger game but those men disappeared conspicuously two years later.
As her youngest brother came of age for the lottery, her father was taken from them.

I'm liking all the sign-ups so far. Keep it up everyone. I would like to ask Astdis to change your modern day location. Granted, the only reason why I ask for it is to show how close the villages are to each other, but considering that Montana is divided directly in half, (and the line goes straight down through the rest of the country) Colorado would be behind the wall's borders. I had to ask Eclipsed Dreamer to do the same so don't worry about it.

Other than that, I'm excited to see 3 sign-ups already and I can't wait for the rest.

Just to make this simpler, here's all the modern day states that would be available to choose from:
Half of Montana
Just a small sliver of Wyoming
Utah
Arizona
Idaho
Nevada
Washington
Oregon
California
Alaska
(For those who wish for their modern location to be Canadian)
Alberta
British Columbia
Yukon
About half of the Northwest Territories

Name: Cain Maverin

Age: 30

Gender: Male

Village: Ash?Tar (Modern day Nevada)

Appearance: Cain stands at a height of 5?10? and has a thick build; mainly his arms are stronger due to his constant swinging of a hammer on an anvil. He has light brown eyes and short brown wavy hair. He has a gentle face and gentle disposition was well, he wears the general blacksmith wear of leather apron and sleeveless shirt and leather chaps over his cloth trousers. But outside of his work he wears a black tunic over his white sleeveless shirt and regular trousers with rather plain boots. He has browned skin and a thin beard that looks pretty close to five o?clock shadow.

Occupation: Blacksmith

Background: Cain was born into a farmers family, never grew old enough to be able to help his father with reaping the fields or helping him plant. But he was old enough to remember everything until he was moved away from his family. When he was about eight years old, he remembers clearly when he experienced his mother being chosen for the lottery. She was pregnant at the time so in Cain?s mind he always counted that as two people being stolen from him. He never really had to deal with his depressed father after that happened, he sent his son off to be an apprentice to a blacksmith in another village. Cain went against his will but still went, and learned the trade so that one day he could be with his father again and he could take care of him.

That dream was shattered when he was nineteen and a messenger had arrived to the Ash?Tar village, one that Cain thought looked familiar from his boyhood days. And indeed it was a familiar face; it was an old childhood friend he had before he was sent off to this village. The young man had carried the message all the way from the west coast village he was born in and informed Cain that his father had killed himself, hung himself in his house from the sever depression of his wife being take from him and being so alone since he sent Cain away to become a blacksmith. Cain officially took note that his entire family was now gone. The tragedy, for Cain Maverin, does not end with the suicide of his father.

When he turned twenty-five, Cain took a wife of his own and he was happy for a time, they were married for two years before she was picked for the Lottery. He fought hard to keep her from going, but, the soldiers proved to be too much for him, especially when they put a bullet in his leg and then beat him for attempting to save his wife. She was taken and he has yet to see her again, Cain still loves her so deeply and so very much that he still holds her in his heart. Hoping one day to be picked for the lottery so he can go across the wall and find his one love.

Personality: Even with all of this tragedy and absolute heart break he has experienced, Cain still manages to maintain a cherry disposition. He always seems to see the brighter side of things, he never lets anything get him down, not for too long that is. He always fights for that he thinks is right, even when the masses see it as the wrong thing. He is not super human in the least bit, he feels the weight of the world on him and even he can fall under its pressure. But, he doesn?t stay under its hold for long; he gets right back on his feet and keeps moving forward. He sees that the end is always worth the sacrifice and worth the effort, regardless of how close to giving up he gets.

Color: Black

OOC: Hope this is good, I couldn't find a good real life picture that made the Blacksmith part feel right.

Name: Milo Strae

Age: 21

Gender: Male

Village: Orsys

Appearance: Picture

A fairly tall man, but by no means intimidating. Milo has a young face that is accented by his near white blond hair, making him look much younger than he is. Though he makes beautiful fabrics, he very rarely wears them. Instead wearing more conservative clothes, mostly browns and whites, often covered in assorted patches from wear and tear. All of this is topped with a sheep skin vest his mother made for him.

Occupation: He acts as a shepherd for his father's flock, but his real specialty is in weaving. Though his father looks down upon it, he must admit that his son has a great skill at it.

Background: Milo was born and raised in Orsys. His father was a shepherd and his mother tanned and skinned the hide of sheep. As he grew older his skills as a weaver became more and more apparent, much to his father's dismay. Milo's father taught him all he knew about shepherding, but it didn't matter much as his weaving became better and better as the days passed. The day he was told about his marriage with Shali was also the day of his father's accident. His father was trampled when the flock was spooked and his back was broken, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Milo was the only one who could take care of the flock.

The day Shali came to town was one of the most intimidating in Milo's life. Not only was he marrying a woman he never met, but to an older woman at the age of fifteen. Since their marriage Milo has grown to love Shali, usually pampering her with the luxuries he can afford and the fabric he makes, and is hoping to give her a second child.

Personality: Milo is quiet, polite, and even-tempered, he can't even remember the last time he got angry.

Hmm, lots've room in this story for it too be good. Props on the idea darren.

Name: Jason McGraft

Age: 21

Gender: Male

Village: Northwatch, one of the smaller of the 100 villiages. Northwatch is located in the frozen tundra of the North. The villiage is a prime location to raise a government imported Yak.

Appearance: I'll add a picture tommorow morning, but for now; Jason's tall (6'3) with a muscular build. He usually is found in the characteristic furs people from that area have always worn.

Occupation: Jason and his father hunt the Arctic Wolves, Bear, and other predators that threaten the Yaks within the Villiage's borders.

Background: Jason was originally born and raised in Yunia. His father volunteer'd for a job that was supposed to help them be able to travel between villiages, a hunter by trade the job was supposed to be great. Instead the government stuck the family in Northwatch, to fend off the predators of the Alaskan Yak.

Personality: Jason is pretty happy go lucky, it takes a good bit to "ruffle his feathers". But when it does watch out. From spending most of his life as a hunter protecting creatures, Jason has developed a bit of an "overprotective" streak. And tends to take new people under his wing to ensure they won't be harmed in a conflict.

Name: Dante Dasr
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Village: Thantos [Alaska - North]

Appearance:
Here

Occupation: Libarian/Book-Keep [let me know if this needs changing]

Background: The climate of his village left little room for farmers of any sort so and, as a result, Dante was blessed the son of trader who also passed time as an artist (also bringing in a valuable income for the family). Thantos was known for its craftsmenship - textiles, art, books and writers. Though often they would trade and find themselves out of the village, Dante was more of a recluse. He seldom had anyone to talk to, nor particulary cared if he did. His family only consisted of himself, his mother, his father and three older brothers, with no older family left around. There was never any tradegy in his life, nor any reason to hate or fear the government. His brothers moved away to another village in search of a succesful job (having nothing they could do in Alaska) leaving Dante with his parents, who had no desire to leave the confines of his security.

He was young when he was appointed the Book Keeper for his village and doesn't think he'll be leaving his village any time soon. A few close friends have won the lottery and, as legend says, never returned; it left Dante thinking but never acting on it, because he truly wasn't stupid enough to go against the authority when he was quite content by himself.

Personality: Intelligent and quiet. He very rarely starts a conversation and tends to mumble whenever he does speak, keeping his head low and staying in the background quite often. His true personality (as in his morals and priorities) is a well guarded secret, or so it seems, because he doesn't stay around too often for people to get to know that. On the outside he appears to be a nice boy, kind enough (if not sarcastic) with no problem taking orders, but the reality beneath the facade is unknown as of yet.

? ♥ ?

Name: Virgil De Luce
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Village: Ash? Tar, but originally from Pandaemonium [Arizona]
Appearance: Virgil stands at 6?1?? and is known by all who come across by his fairly stereotypical ?clock maker? appearance- his square rimmed glasses barely cover the large bags under his eyes, the bangs of his shoulder length hair always falls over his eyes and he is very thin. The only deviation from the stereotype is his relatively tanned skin.
Occupation: Clockmaker

Background: Virgil was born to a clockmaker and a seamstress, Rafael De Luce and Alma Clementine. His childhood remained blissfully untouched by the Lottery and the government. Both of his parents were entirely content within this system established, and allowed the government to freely control them. They never delved into the mysteries of the past, or objected to the soldiers inhabiting their house. They raised Virgil to be a clockmaker like his father, and he was happy. He was a childhood friend of Cain [the same who would later relay the message of Cain?s father?s death] and the two spent almost every day together, and Virgil watched over Cain?s father the years after Cain departed.

The only real discontent apparent in Virgil?s home life was present in his brother Augustine. He disappeared quickly once reaching his teenage years, but Virgil was always told that Augustine had left to make a life elsewhere. Virgil accepted this as fact immediately, and would often write letters to his brothers and request that the soldiers take them to him. This was frowned upon, however [as people taken by the government had, for all intentions, never existed] so his parents quickly stopped that. From that point in his life, his life gradually declined into madness.

In his nineteenth year, in a stroke of horrid luck, every member of his remaining family ?won? the lottery, and Virgil was left alone in Pandaemonium. He acted as the only clockmaker for the village for a couple of months, before misery struck again; Mr. Maverin committed suicide. Virgil had just left the man only moments ago, and when he came back, he had hung himself. Virgil took his suicide personally- he had taken it upon himself to care for Mr. Maverin, and he felt that it was his responsibility for the man?s death. With the approval of the soldiers, Virgil traveled to Ash? Tar to relay the message of Mr. Maverin?s death to Cain. Since then he has lived nearby Cain, and even nursed him back to health after he was shot by the soldiers for resisting his wife?s trip across the wall.

Personality: Virgil is very distracted. He?s a very cheerful person, but it always seems as if he?s somewhere else, somewhere distant. He spends nearly every moment constructing clocks intently. He never ignores any companions present, but his eyes rarely move from his work. That?s not to say he isn?t caring, compassionate, or loving. When Cain was injured, Virgil spent months doing nothing other than taking care of his friend, devoting every moment to assisting his comrade.

Okay, sign-ups are closed!
Thanks for all the posts, everyone is accepted! I'll start the new thread either today (Saturday) or tomorrow depending on how my skydiving excursion goes. (If it goes too badly, you might not see the thread at all, :P)

Anyway, I can tell you that the first post should be an introduction to life in your village. In addition describe your festival (or not, if you don't want your village to have a lottery festival) and Lottery drawing. (You may conduct the lottery in whatever creative way you choose) Just remember, that your character must be chosen.

Anyway, if this is going to be the short RP that I intended, we'll need full cooperation, I don't want to have to wait for a week for one person to post reply in order to move on. (If that's the case, I'll find a creative way to "deal" with that character) so when the new landmarks/objectives appear, I request that everyone reply in a timely manner so this can be over in a couple months. (Maybe less if everything goes according to plan and we don't have any snags)

As for some of the secrets to your sign-ups, I will tell you that gender, age, and color will all play a role in how your gameplay will happen. (But you'll just have to wait and find out exactly how it effects you when the game starts)

Thanks again, and I hope you all enjoy the story.
