Halloween always sees all sorts of crazy movies and legends about a variety of bloodsuckers as it were. So... when I saw a link leading to an article that really was about creatures zat suck ur blood. I decided to read it. It can be found here: The science of bloodsuckers

It had a lot of fun and yet gross facts in there. Like this for instance:
Blood contains no fat and is largely composed of water - and for that reason, vampire bats have to drink half their weight in blood every night. They have to start peeing massive amounts even while they're feeding.
That kind had me going... o_O The rest of the bit on why human vampires was mathematically impossible, this was a link to another article within that one: Science takes a bite out of vampires was interesting as well. Over all it just made for a fun, if not gross, read at times.

Personally I find the idea of so called supernatural critters existing a bit of a stretch. Though considering that there are real creatures that do suck your blood, I can see how people let their imagination run wild in order to create all sorts of stories and such. =P

Anyway that 's what I think. So what's your take on the creepy crawlers out to get your blood? Real or imagined?

I'm not a believer in the supernatural either, but yeah as Rach said that stuff you linked to Aaryanna was quite an interesting read. I have to admit I let a few chuckles out at the idea that Dracula should be a "really skinny guy with romantic challenges" based on genuine blood-sucker habits because I'm immature like that.

The idea that people do genuinely believe in these kinds of creatures has always been a bit of a head scratcher for me. I mean the one about ghosts being material or immaterial was a really good example for me as to why you can't really believe in this stuff.

I always figured vampires would subsist not only on the physical blood but the magnetism and aura and psychic energy released during such a sensual or violent act. Psychic blood drinking creatures. Vampire is only one of several possible monikers for such a being... .....ah good old lore.

Anyway I like blood because of the iron concentration [good for anemics], and because cows blood leeching from a deliciously undercooked steak is fun to sop up with your sourdough bread. Call me a vampire. But blood tastes good as a flavoring.

As for the vampire concept, I like the idea of something being unnatural to what we already know however a human vampire is impossible scientifically unless it feeds on more then just blood.

Folklore is pass down and are told to explain what could not be explain in the past. If I'm remembering a history channel show right vampires were used when humans didn't understand how a corpse decomposes and were scared on how the dead still looked so life like after a time. The only explanation to town people was the dead was coming back to life and feeding on blood because of the lips being red. I don't know if this is exactly right but I'm pretty sure.

I have to admit I let a few chuckles out at the idea that Dracula should be a "really skinny guy with romantic challenges" based on genuine blood-sucker habits because I'm immature like that.
I don't know if I'd go so far as to say immature, but it does punch holes in that ever so inaccurate image of the dashing vampire. When I think of some people I know who romanticize the idea of a vampire lord, I can't help but laugh at it.

I also find others believing in such things a stretch, a very long one at that. It's an interesting concept, but rather outdated when modern science can explain things that were mistaken for vampires and so forth. Now it's just a pastime for amusing oneself, with the stories that is.

I believe in vampires and werewolves. And anything else with my oddball imagination. Call me crazy, but I don't care if their physically real or not (though I wish they would be). They're real to me as long as they're in my head.

And yes, blood is quite good. Especially on garlic bread. And rare steaks are awesome.:catgirl:

And here I like my food well done. o_O Not that I think it's gross, but rather because I don't care for how blood tastes. lol

Oh and Gavin, the bit on the 'romantically' challenged vampire deal made me snicker too.
