Thanksgiving Plans?

Okay, since we seem to have a thread for every upcoming holiday here on the boards, I'm going to keep up the tradition.

Thanksgiving is around the corner folks! HUZZAH!!! So, what are your plans for the holiday? Have any entertaining stories of Thansgivings past?

Well, nothing special planned for me...I'm going to spend all day eating and sleeping. As for entertaining stories...for the past couple of years I've tried to cook something or at least help. And every time, the food I tried to come near spontaneously combusted...:animedepr I always end up banished to my room until all the food is cooked. Needless to say, I am a menace in the kitchen...

My parents are taking the brood to southern California to be with my mentally fading grandmother. I sadly have midterms and papers due all throughout the week of Thanksgiving which is just more proof that the school I attend is run by maniacs. So I'll be working and studying, although I've been invited to friend's places in the area, so I suppose I'll see.

I do know that my grandmother has invited me and a male [cough] friend to her place to learn how to play traditional mah jhongg and bluff and lie and eat until we waddle away eventually. Lucky us.

THANKSGIVING IS THE ONE HOLIDAY THAT I LOOK FORWARD TO THE MOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That day is the only day I can gorge on food without feeling bad. My plans for Thanksgiving are to help my mom cook and then eat and eat and eat and eat and eat and...............well, you get the picture. After that, I'm probably going to just lay in one spot for about two hours because I'm too full to even move. Entertaining stories? Hm..........one time I helped my mom make chitlins and last year we had the turkey in the fridge for about 2 months( I didn't even want to see what was in there) and when me and my sister took it out, it was covered with mold and looked like a monster. It stunk bad, too. I had to clean it..........
But yeah, it was awesome. My dad always leads the family in prayer at every Thanksgiving and sits at the head of the table. We thank God for everything and then we eat and eat and eat some more.
*sigh* I love that holiday.:animesmil

Upcoming? Thanksgiving was exactly one month ago! But I suppose I'll talk about what my family and I did anyways for you American folk.

Twice a year my dads side of the family gets together for dinner at my Aunt and Uncle's ginormous house. Once for Thanksgiving in October and again near Christmas. There is always plenty of homemade recipes and turkey going around along with wine and egg nog but this year was a little different.

My Aunt and Uncle bought a new house (seeing as all 8 of their kids have moved out) and it is very nice but a lot smaller. It was weird eating thanksgiving dinner somewhere else but it was the same family so fun times were still had. And this year I got to drink and be merry! I was thankful for that. :animeswea

I'm going to try and visit my family, but I don't know if it's going to happen or not. I hope so since I love catching up with everyone and helping my mom make all sorts of goodies for the holiday is fun. We have a tradition of picking a few new recipes to try out each year. I've already been looking at stuff for this year since I'll end up trying something even if I can't get home.

Eat, eat, and eat some more.

And when I'm full, I'll probably slump into a chair and watch some TV. :p

Seriously though, we always just stay at home, cook dinner, and eat over at grandma's house. I'm hoping some of our errant relatives might drop by for a quick visit at least.

Unfortunately, Thanksgiving is the time of year that everyone in my family decides to have a family reunion. Even more so, my family is filled with religious, racist, and very judgmental people... Every year, my mom gets crap for marrying a white man. (Instead of another indian) I get crap for being so open about my lack of religion. (and my refusal to say prayer) And my brother gets crap for having two children (one out of wedlock) and being divorced. They're really going to go all out on him this year when they find out that he's got a third kid coming. (Also, out of wedlock)

It always ends in tears, someone leaving, curse words being thrown, perfectly good food being thrown, or an actual fist fight. Yes, my family is the definition of dysfunctional. Last year, my dad decided not to go because of all the verbal abuse. It was sad but kinda funny because all the older members were so excited. They thought my mom was getting divorced.

Also, every year, all 80+ members of the family go around and say what they're thankful for. My response is always, "I'm glad there hasn't been a fight yet," which usually inspires one. I guess I shouldn't say that, but it's the only thing I'm truly thankful for when I walk into that environment...

I really don't want to go. Neither does my mom, but coming from such a tribal family, all of the older members take GREAT offense if you just don't show. They may even decide to show up at our house to see why we didn't go. So, as good as the food may be, I just really really hate Thanksgiving.

I'm worried that my food may be poisoned one year. :animedepr

Its okay, like many people you just ate yourself into a coma. This is all a dream, and its really december. Sorry you had to find out like this!

That being said, that's exactally what I plan on doing. However since I've been engaged I've found that I end up eating more than most people. With both of our parents living within 30 miles of one another, I'll be pregaming at my mother's. Stopping by my father's for some homemade peanutbutter pie (perks of divorced parents), and finally topping it off at her parents. So basically I keep enough leftovers in my fridge to survive a nuclear holocaust.

As far as funny stories, I'm sure I could think of some when I was little. But as far as the past couple years? None that I can recall, I'm normally past out on the couch by the end of the last dinner.

Weirdos and your late Thanksgiving...

Anyyyways. This year was crazy because I was moving out during Thanksgiving, so we didn't do much special. It was my Mom and I on the road, so there wasn't any big gathering at home like usual.

Regular years though, it would be held at my Granny's and most of my Dad's side of the family would come down for the day. We ate a lot and always finished the meal off with pie. Pumpkin generally, but since I don't like pumpkin my Gran started making me my own coconut cream pie =P I dunno if I'll be going home for the next few Thanksgivings due to financial reasons, but hopefully I'll get that tradition back on track once I actually have money!

My plans are the same really, spending time with friends and family. The only difference this year is it looks my parents are going to travel to where my older brother lives up in Idaho. And though I think it would be fun, I'd rather stay here, even if that means making my own food this year.

Doing what I normally do...either have family over here or go to my aunt's house.

One thing I always do is watch Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. It's been a tradition since I was little, and I don't plan on breaking it any time soon. :catgirl:

Another thing I'd love to do this year? Participate in a Black Friday shopping spree. I never have, and it's been something I'd actually love to do. [So long as I don't get trampled over...oof...]

I can't believe I forgot the macy's parade. That's as big a thanksgiving staple as turkey. Also, I was always hesitant to go out on black friday for fear of being mauled. But I tried it a few years ago and I do it every year. My mother and aunts always got together and went, so I got a bunch of my friends and we do a guys version.

Well, Thanksgiving is going to be different this year for me, thanks to a move. So we won't nearly have as many people over as I'm used to. Also, judging from last year's Thanksgiving which I spent at someone else's house, the food is bland around this time of year. (Over in my new place I call home, at least.)

So hopefully I can convince my family to have Thanksgiving at our house. It will be fun anyways to help cook a lot of the food.

My plans are simple. Help my mom make lots of tasty food, spend time with friends and family. Play games while I'm in a semi food coma. Naturally this will include my dog curling up on my laps since she does that while I play games.

Then when I'm recovered, it's more food, black Friday shopping (more for fun than anything) and then more goofing off since I won't have school again till the following Monday.

It's just a nice break and I'd have to say that the food part is the best since my mom makes some really yummy stuff. Leftovers all weekend is just divine.

Unfortunately my plans for Thanksgiving are up in the air. -_- I had a severe allergic reaction to some mushrooms a few weeks back. And for some reason I can't eat any solid foods without choking, so I'm on a liquid diet until my next appointment. As of now my plans are to -_- eat a bowl of soup, do some website work, catch up on some tv, and maybe go out and play a "children's card game" the day after.

Very boring indeed....

Oh man. Thanksgiving... American Thanksgiving which of course equals watching football. Not the counterfeit Canadian Thanksgiving where they don't do football. :animecry:

Well I'll be working on and off. I start by working from 11pm-7AM from the night before to the morning of Thanksgiving. Then I get to have some sleep since everyone is off and my dad is home from hunting so someone else can keep an eye on my daughter until like 1PM or so (I think that leaves me with about 6.5 hours of sleep since it takes 1/2 an hour for me to get home)

Around 2 I think we go to my mom's older sister's house for the meal. It's pretty traditional and I think my brother and his wife should be there too. I hope my sister-in-law can be there because we hardly see her.

Then around 6:30 I go back to work from 7-11pm because I had to argue to not come in at 3PM this past monday. And then I get home and on Black Friday instead of shopping I'm pulling a double from 7am-11pm. Oh yeah and then Saturday it's 11pm-3am. I think I like my job. Oh I just like the money.

Yeah, I'm boring. And since my ex husband and his family are staying down in Texas again instead of spending money to see his daughter here in New York just like last year (He hasn't seen our daughter in person since May of '07 and thinks he shouldn't have to pay child support) there won't be any drama. He hasn't really had a holiday with her since Christmas '05 and during Thanksgiving '05 when he came to pick our daughter up from my aunt's house (in his class A's no less- please I'm from a family of war veterans who does he think he's impressing?) my aunt had to go up stairs so she wouldn't punch him out. Frankly I can't wait until he actually tries to be a father to our daughter (he has a step daughter and a son from this marriage) because that will be when the real good stories start... ooh better warm up the blog incase he shows up for Christmas!

Eh, Canadian Thanksgiving goes back just as far (if not further) as the American version. And we too have a football event every year (The Thanksgiving Day Classic). It's just not a huge deal because football sucks and everyone is watching the hockey game. :)

I'm only saying that because my boyfriend is from British Columbia and had to ask his brothers if they had football on Thanksgiving. Then I told him that not having football on Thanksgiving is un American. To which he simply replied he wasn't American he was Canadian :animesigh Like I needed him to remind me, I can always just look at his passport.

And Football does not suck. It's just as good as Hockey. Plus aside from the Winter Classic last year and that other one in Edmonton back in 2000 something all the NHL games are indoors. You want Hockey to kick *** play outside more often.

Thanksgiving will be as usual this year. My mom cooks everything, we have Beaujolais Nouveau, and then we play scrabble after the pumpkin pie with ice cream. ^_^;

I'm going to go shopping on black Friday this year. I've only done it once before, and I got a great deal on a Dooney and Bourke Tote bag ($99!), so I'm going to go this year, as there are things I still need to buy.

Drizzt - I think that's a great idea, going with a group of people. It sounds like fun!

Thanksgiving is all food and more food. When I was little I hated thanksgiving. I thought it was a pointless holiday between halloween and Christmas, with just a bunch of food.

When I was younger we usually had a few people over, more so than now atleast. But my parents are divorced so we have it here, then at my mom's.

Anyway, this year will probebly be the same as last year. I'll eat here at home with my dad, and brother. I'm pretty sure my aunt is coming, and most likely my dad's girlfriend. I hope her kids don't come though...I don't think my aunt liked the little heathens the last time, lol. The next day my brother and I will drive to our mom's for more feasting. XD

I work the day before thanksgiving, but have thanksgiving and the day after off this year. Score!

My dad will probebly make turkey, stuffing, deviled eggs, and all the other traditional thanksgiving foods. My mom is diffrent, I think she's making tacos and burritos, lol. She makes really good Mexican food.
