Since you didn't specify, any of the competitors could have taken up until the 23rd even to work on their piece, which would have been remarkably inconvenient for voters, albeit very good rewriting time for the competitor. There are always extenuating circumstances to go past deadlines, of course. I still also believe posting first gives opponents the advantage because they can see exactly what you've written and have time and work around it but, alas, it doesn't bother me too much.
