James
If you're going to dismiss all news sources as illegitimate, you might as well stop reading any article or newspaper.
I agree with this. There seems to be a weird tendency lately to simply dismiss every major news outlet, as if there's some kind of sinister agenda underneath everything. Most major news sources are fine and most adhere to journalistic standards (with Fox News occasionally being a significant exception). Having said that, I think the biggest issue is actually just bias or selective coverage. Without getting too far into it though, I think that it's very easy to draw a long bow and scoff at any mainstream news source when, in fact, most of them pretty much do the right thing most of the time. I have personally found - especially in University - that those who scoffed the most were the ones who weren't actually news readers themselves, or who had little knowledge of current affairs. I'm not saying that's happening here, but I definitely found this to be the case in my own experience. (So yes, in short, very few people are going to read an entire bill - but there should be plenty of sources for summary; the only question is whether or not people will bother to read the summaries themselves).
I'm very good at what I do. And I only do it when some ego needs deflating.
I didn't see anything particularly ego-centric about Lunox's comments. You, on the other hand, need an Allamorph of your own to keep things in check.

SunfallE
Oh I don't know James. I think the complaint that putting something out there so the general public actually has time to read if they so wish, isn't unreasonable. By giving so little time before the actual vote, it's basically forcing people to rely on other outlets like the news or summaries online. Most working people simply do not have time to read much beyond that. I simply do not agree with the idea that telling the public, or anyone for that matter, to just suck it up and read it in such a short time, is in anyway fair. I see that kind of mentality and attitude very egoistical and downright annoying to deal with when I'm trying to understand politics. :/
Allamorph
Or, in short, giving the public three days to assimilate the Baucus Bill is tantamount to saying "Read War and Peace in three days and be prepared for an in-depth discussion on any and all content." I can read it in three days, sure. Or I can give it the time it deserves to fully understand it. But given the magnitude of the bill, asking both is a bit much. Although I could do with another Allamorph to help out. Might actually be possible, then.

I don't think I even referred directly to that. I was just making a comment about attitudes towards the mainstream news outlets. I agree that ideally, a proposed bill should be available for a good length of time so that the public can view it. I'm not sure though whether the time issue here is a deliberate egotistical thing or whether this bill has somehow fallen victim to Congress's procedural timing (most of which is, I think, actually mandated by the Constitution). In any case, most people don't read actual bills at all. They simply don't, often for no other reason than that it's very cumbersome and most people just aren't that eager. And even if people did read it, there's often a lot of peripheral stuff in there that can be filtered out. This is why media plays a critical role when it comes to disseminating this kind of information in a more palatable form.

I was leaving the dojo parking lot when some drunk-off-his-*** moron peels around the corner, gets two lanes away from his side of the road and barely manages to correct himself in time for me to punch the accelerator and get the hell out of Dodge.
