Web Comics, Kthx.

Recommended Posts

We're overdue for another Webcomic thread around here. You all know the drill. Discuss webcomics. Recommend your favorites to everyone and go into a little detail as to why you like them.

Recently, I've gotten in to Head Trip in a big way. The main characters of this one are Malory, a twenty-something redhead with a somewhat geekish personality and very murderous tendencies, and Kathryn, her younger, slightly more level-headed sister. Most of the humor involves Mal reacting to the world around her in various ways that can range from bemused to bewildered to, of course, violent. Kat is usually around to either talk some sense into her or stand by helplessly. There's a fair-sized supporting cast, as well, but those two are the ones who tend to crop up the most.

There's also Emo Kid and Chemo Kid, a spinoff-ish series that gets updated sporadically as part of the main comic. It started out as a gag one-shot featuring the exploits of Emo Kid (exactly what it says on the tin) and Chemo Kid, a cancer patient. They do superhero things, but have no discernible superpowers. Since then, though, it's evolved into a slightly darker, more dramatic story of its own.

I'm a big fan of this one because of a lot of things. For one, the author has a really impressive art style. I particularly dig a lot of Mal's facial expressions. The comic is also consistently funny, even the weaker ones (not counting the newer Emo and Chemo ones, but they're not supposed to be.) Finally, the author is anti-Twilight. And she is awesome for it.

I've recently gotten into A Softer World, which is this bizarre three-panel photography based comic.

It's got this whole "we're pretentious, but we realize how little that means" kind of thing going on.

I love A Softer World so much.

I also really love xkcd. Some of them are so thought-provoking or romantic. It's sweet.

Then there's always Toothpaste for Dinner. TPFD has been my favorite for a long time. It's so ridiculously hilarious.

Then, of course, Cyanide & Happiness is a classic. It's just... funny. Hah.

Oh, & a new favorite of mine: Garfield Minus Garfield. It's exactly what the title says: Garfrield comics with Garfield removed from them. It shows a more existential side of Jon.

I was going to mention this, but you beat me to it! My brother introduced me to it. I love Garfield, but this is just awesome.

I used to read Mega Tokyo often, but eventually I just stopped. Its still good though. Another was Apple Geeks(Same thing with this as Mega Tokyo) I'm not a Mac person, but I thought it was funny. I liked the art, which is always a plus for me. :p

I was reading Hajime no Ippo for awhile and got really into that. Its actually a manga, but I was reading it online so I thought I'd throw it in there. My boyfriend at the time got me into that because its about fighting and I had a fight coming up.

I don't follow anywhere near as many web comics as I should. I do enjoy reading vgcats and Cyanide & Happiness is pretty good too. The others are something that I end up reading bits of when someone links me to one they find amusing. Like that Head Trip Ace posted. That's awesome.

For stuff that hasn't been mentioned yet:

The Slackerz.
Minimalist style, using mostly tricked out stick figures for unimportant or iconic characters, and with a few really cool people designs.

Gunnerkrigg Court.
Story of magic and sciences through the eyes of a young, very matter-of-fact medium.

Allan is a fairly interesting comic. It's not laugh out loud hilarious, but it's a very enjoyable distraction.

Captain SNES would be my absolute favorite webcomic ever if it could go back to updating more than 15 times a year.

Gods of Arr-Kelaan is pretty fascinating. It updates slowly, though understandably so. I think the current story has been going on for nearly 2 years. It's a little maddening, but a good read anyway. EDIT: Oh wow, two and a half years. Yeesh.
