I finally got to watch episode 4. I've been so busy...

Well, I discovered that I was wrong in asssuming that Light would [spoiler]give up half his lifespan for Death God's eyes...[/spoiler] Now that I think about it, it was kind of a stupid assumption on my part. He's way too smart to do something like that.

I thought this episode was an interesting change compared to the previous episodes. It was interesting to see Light [spoiler]discover the extent of what the Death Note is capable of[/spoiler], and I found it really refreshing to see [spoiler]Light go on a date[/spoiler]. I liked the [spoiler]bus scene[/spoiler], and the [spoiler]hijacker's voice[/spoiler] didn't really bother me... It's not like it was great voice acting or anything, it's just such a minor part that I don't really care.

It really sucks that Light's [spoiler]out to get Ray Penber[/spoiler]. I like his character. Can't wait to find out what'll happen next!

I hope they change around the ending a little in the anime, because I did not like the ending in the manga! I'm not gonna say what it is though...(Even with the spoiler tagging, it's too much to post! *nod nod*) I haven't seen the anime yet, even though I really would like to. I'm going to Japan for Christmas, so I might be able to see an episode [I]in[/I] Japan. *dies with excitement*

The preview for episode 6 brings us a hint at the only canon pairing in the series that's worth rooting for: L/sugar cubes. :animenose

That aside, episode 5 made a pretty big impression on me. It wasn't done more skillfully than the previous episodes, and the ending was frustrating (what a cliffhanger!). More so than anything we've previously seen, though, it really brings home how [spoiler]utterly despicable Light has become.[/spoiler] I'm definitely feeling that more in the anime version than in the manga, and it's not due to any changes or over-dramatization. It's just a lot harder to brush off or deny the fact that [spoiler]Light is cavalierly killing innocent people when you can hear his voice and the voices of his victims.[/spoiler]

I'll say this much: it took me a lot longer to start [spoiler]truly loathing Light[/spoiler] when I was reading the manga. It'll be interesting to see how I respond to the live-action movie.

Anyway, this would be a good point at which to start paying attention to [spoiler]the parallels between L and Light.[/spoiler] Who in the series--and it doesn't have to be those two; far from it--is truly justified? Who is honestly striving to do the right thing? [spoiler]Much as I love L, the inherent differences between him and Light are uncomfortably minor.[/spoiler] I think the anime will force viewers to acknowledge this as well.

EDIT: Right now I'm erring on the side of extreme caution with my spoiler tags. But if anyone (who hasn't read the manga) thinks I'm overdoing it, just say so. It's hard to tell what deserves to be hidden.

Actually, that's one of the things I like about L. I find it interesting that he really is just one step away from [spoiler]being "evil"[/spoiler] and doesn't even realize it. L demonstrates time and again that [spoiler]doing the right thing isn't nearly as important to him as doing things the way he [I]wants[/I] them to be done.[/spoiler] I get the feeling that L just so happened to fall onto the "good" side rather than making a conscious decision to.

As for Light, I personally don't buy into the "the Death Note makes people evil" theory nor do I think that Light is just a bad person. I'm of the view that neither Light nor L are naturally good or evil; they're just the kind of people whose beliefs and morals can be turned upside-down based entirely upon what cards they're dealt with.

It took until the [spoiler]death of Naomi[/spoiler] to make me really start to hate Light. I could hardly read the part where [spoiler]Light was working his tricks to get her to reveal her name, knowing that as soon as she did so she was dead[/spoiler]. And then the [I]way[/I] he did it- [spoiler]making her kill herself out of sorrow[/spoiler] - that was just too [spoiler]brutal[/spoiler]. I never regained my faith in Light after that.

I think the similarities between Light and L were what made it such a great conflict. L never seemed overly concerned with morals: [spoiler]he was the first one to suggest letting people die to test the Death Note[/spoiler] on multiple occasions, and right at the beginning the only reason [spoiler]he took the case[/spoiler] was because it 'interested' him - not because of any sense that Kira was bad.

Wow. I was really impressed with episode 5. It really made an impression, and left me thinking.

This episode has really changed the way I feel about Light. I was never that fond of him, [spoiler]considering that he's killing people and all, but he had always stuck to the criminals, which made it seem like he was at least a LITTLE bit decent, but now that he killed off all the FBI officers... Well, I've pretty much lost any respect I ever had for him. Those were innocent people, but Light needed them out of his way... How dispicable.[/spoiler]

When Light [spoiler]came up behind Ray Penbar and told him "I'm Kira, and if you turn around I'll kill you",[/spoiler] I pretty much started freaking out. At that point I was a little sad, because I figured [spoiler]there was no way Ray would survive. The whole Light controlling Ray thing, though, was a great scene. I thought it was really well done. The part where Ray died after exiting the train was really powerful. I'm really interested to see what his fiancee is going to do... I'm rooting for her.[/spoiler]

All I can say is, what an annoying ending! I'm going to be waiting impatiently for the next episode so I can see what will happen [spoiler]with L... It'll be interesting to see him actually interacting with other people.[/spoiler]

You know... I could happily kick back and watch an entire series about L's toes.

Episode 6 is the same old in terms of art and animation; since the next six episodes after episode 1 were reportedly outsourced, I'm guessing that things will pick up again in episode 8. Not that it matters, since L's toes are being drawn in all their knobbly glory.

As for part two of Kappei Yamaguchi's take on L, I do believe I approve. His [spoiler]"Justice always prevails" (sorry, I don't remember the exact translation)[/spoiler] line was delivered oddly, although I suppose that isn't necessarily a bad thing, since L as a character rarely does the expected. I liked how he drew a clear but not glaring contrast between L's darker-toned internal monologues and the lighter voice he used in conversation. Either way, he definitely succeeded in sounding like a genius whose thinking is on a whole other level, to the point that he doesn't quite have the patience for ordinary people but puts up with them anyway. Well, I'm not describing it well, but he hit the blase notes beautifully, without overdoing it.

Miyano Mamoru did a lot of the same internal versus external thing with Light's voice in this episode, what with [spoiler]the cheerful and trustworthy persona he tried to present to Ray's fiancee.[/spoiler] Speaking of which, it might be fun for manga readers to pick out the clues they may have missed when they first read this part of the story. I, for one, liked knowing the significance of [spoiler]Ryuk's laughter.[/spoiler] :)

About episode 6: It was interesting to actually see [spoiler]L in person[/spoiler] (knobbly toes and all ;) ). One thing that I find really remarkable about L are these little characteristic quirks he seems to have (i.e. squatting in his chair, putting his thumb to his lip...). It's something that I haven't really seen in other anime characters, and I think it's a really interesting addition to his already very unique persona...

The [spoiler]similarities between Light and L[/spoiler] also became very apparent in this episode, so I finally have a better understanding of that discussion. :animeswea It almost seems as though he's more interested in winning against Kira than saving lives, but I suppose, deep down, he must care about that as well... I guess I'll have get to know him a bit better before I can determine that. It was also really interesting to see almost a "battle of wits" going on between these two charcaters. It showed how alike they really are.

It's really a very unfortunate thing that Light [spoiler]found out about Ray Penbar's fiancee's suspisions so quickly[/spoiler]. I thought that it was almost unsettling how [spoiler]Light was acting so light-hearted and trustworthy[/spoiler]. I suppose there's something to be said about his acting skills.

I wasn't planning on watching the anime series but I think it's pretty good.

I think the voices mostly fit, especially L's. The only voice that I didn't particularily like was Aizawa's. I don't know if I got the name right, but I'm talking about the guy on the investigation team with the fro.

I have a question: Does anyone know when the Death Note movies will be available to download or when they might come to America? I've been wondering for a long time and I didn't know where I should ask this question, and since this is a Death note thread I figured "Hey, why not."

It's weird...I already know what's gonna happen in these earier episodes, but it still managed to recapture me, though I saw the events coming. I'm only on the second episode currently, but I enjoyed every moment of the two episodes! :D

There's one part that I really want to see in the anime...but I won't post it, just in case anyone's curious and ruins it for themselves. Then I'd feel terrible... :animestun

Shinigami are a pretty common theme in anime and manga... they even appear in Full Moon wo Sagashite (a magical girl series). But Yu Yu Hakusho is probably more along the lines of what you're thinking of; Botan is a shinigami, as are other minor characters.

Anyway, episode 7 was[B] [i]fantastic[/i][/B]. The ending actually left me breathless. I thought it improved on the manga in several respects, such as clearly showing [spoiler]why Aizawa happened to cross paths with Light at that point in the story[/spoiler] instead of leaving it as an unexplained two-page spread that left manga readers bewildered and full of speculation. In the manga version, if I'm remembering right, [spoiler]Aizawa basically appears out of nowhere during that one scene, but his figure had such a prominent place in the panel--appearing in the foreground with Light and Naomi--that it ended up confusing people.[/spoiler]

It's a little amazing when you think about the fact that the whole episode is basically a [spoiler]short walk dragged out over thirty minutes of story-telling.[/spoiler] But I was on tenterhooks as I watched it, even though I knew how things would unfold. As I said above, I really appreciated the little flourishes that the anime staff added--[spoiler]Ryuk's theatrical, red-tinged laughter[/spoiler] at the climax was almost a brilliant touch in terms of how it helped build things up. Also, the manga version of the story didn't specify how [spoiler]Naomi would be forced to commit suicide,[/spoiler] and I liked how the anime version added that in. The final shot of [spoiler]Naomi ascending the stairs to the noose[/spoiler] worked really well for me, although others might find it to be over the top.

More so than any actual changes of that nature, though, the music, voice acting and animation made a huge difference for the story presented in episode 7. In the manga, I remember feeling that [spoiler]Naomi's death was unfortunate,[/spoiler] but only on a cerebral level. The anime, by its lovely use of [spoiler]silence and snow, hammered home the tragedy of what Light did to her. The cruelty of his questions at the end (e.g. asking her if she wanted to call his father) sank in so much more when I had to watch her walk away dully while he asked them.[/spoiler]

Other good stuff:
+ [spoiler]Watari's true face[/spoiler] is revealed! Hooray!
+ Some hilarious Matsuda moments. <3
+ The next episode preview, which showed [spoiler]L digging his thumb into his lip while staring blankly (well, even more blankly than usual) at the video from all of those cameras.[/spoiler] They translated his expression perfectly from the manga.

Wow. Episode 7 was incredible. It was amazing in the way it kept the suspense so potent from beginning to end.

It was pretty incredible to see the events unfold, [spoiler]in the mere period of time it took Naomi to walk home[/spoiler]. It was very engaging, and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I thought it was amazing how I really didn't know what was going to happen. It kept me guessing.

I have to say, I was really believing that [spoiler]Naomi would survive--at least through this episode--and she came really close, too[/spoiler]. Unfortunately, Light, [spoiler]with his evil genius, was able to manipulate her into giving him her real name[/spoiler].

That's a pretty dishonorable way to [spoiler]kill someone[/spoiler]. I can't think of anything that could have been worse. Not only did he [spoiler]kill her, but he made her go through ultimate anguish and depression, before she inevitably took her own life[/spoiler]. That's pretty dispicable. The ending was REALLY powerful. And very sad.

Likewise--this shot worked really well for me, too. I didn't find it over the top at all. It was very effective. The part where [spoiler]Naomi handed Light her driver's license[/spoiler] was also very effective--the music added a lot of feeling. The snow, as she walked away, was also a great touch, and I found [spoiler]Light ultimately revealing to her that he's Kira[/spoiler] was rather cruel.

Geyah... I found [spoiler]Ryuk's laughter[/spoiler] so creepy. It really gave me the chills. :animedepr

It was interesting to see a touch of comedy in this episode, too. Matsuda's pretty funny. :p It was also interesting to see [spoiler]Watari's face[/spoiler].

Rumor has it that DN has been licensed by Viz. Not a huge surprise, given that they get most Shounen Jump anime. In any case, if they are planning to release it, you can probably expect to hear some of the actors that get used in other Viz dubs; I don't pay much attention to which studios they turn to most often, so I can't tell you much more than that.

As for episode 8, I want to marry Ryuk.

It was a surprisingly entertaining episode, given that the part of the storyline depicted here is very bland compared to what we're going to get in episode 9. I loved the opening scene with the [spoiler]ice cream,[/spoiler] which was almost Utena-esque in its casual surrealness.

The rest of the episode basically descended into extreme self-parody, but I'm willing to believe that the anime writers knew what they were doing and did it deliberately. And it definitely kept my attention, haha. That has got to be the most epic [spoiler]potato chip eating[/spoiler] scene of all time. It sent me into Ryuk-like fits of laughter.

On a side note, Hideki Ryuuga got his own J-drama! :love:

Other perks of episode 8 include lovingly colored porn (not really, but about as close to it as any show of this type can get) and a heavy helping of glorious Ryuk moments. I can't wait for episode 9, though. It's going to pwn six ways from Tuesday.

I don't really know why to tell you the truth, but just because I haven't been posting in here doesn't mean that I haven't been keeping tabs on Death Note. I have watched all the episode's so far, and i've got to say that episode 8 has got to be one of the best yet. I mean, I have to agree with Dagger about the [spoiler]ice cream[/spoiler] being "casual-surrealness", it was just kinda've funny(to me) how they were all sitting around eating [spoiler]ice cream[/spoiler]. And that [spoiler]potatoe chip scene[/spoiler] was really tense for me, because I kept thinking L was going to notice it. Great episode, definetly one of the best yet.[/COLOR][/SIZE]

All I have to say after seeing episode 9 is that either 1) they've run out of money to spend on giving this show something resembling actual animation, or 2) they cut major corners on this episode in order to deliver an uber-leet [spoiler]tennis game[/spoiler] in episode 10. Holy crap, I have no idea how this anime does it. lol They absolutely deliver on every single episode (which is such a relief since I still watch Naruto for some reason :p), progressing the story line and my interest with every scene. I think this is fast becoming one of my favorite animes, and it's on number [i][b]9[/b][/i], leaving me wondering how they can keep this up for another 28. So apparently there are three arcs to the manga, the third of which is the longest, and the first two which should complete roughly within the length of season one?

I've been keeping up with the episodes and this thread, but I think there was just something about this last episode that made me want to post again, haha. I just love the extent to which the story explores the clash of L and Light to outwit each other in so many fantastic ways. The philosophy and psychology behind the anime is still what I'm all about, and I'm pretty much convinced that Light's fundamental mistake was [spoiler]his initial goal of doing this to become a God, rather than holding ideal justice as something good in itself. I guess the question becomes whether justice can be theoretically attained by killing vicious people.[/spoiler] I'm also still waiting for that [spoiler]second Death Note to come into the picture[/spoiler]... (this isn't a spoiler for anyone who's seen the first episode)

By the way, Dagger, your Japanese makes me jealous. ;_; All in good time, I suppose.. then I can watch anime episodes 2-3 days in advance as well. >:D

The manga can most cleanly be divided into two major arcs. One is longer than the other, but for practical purposes you can just consider them the two halves of the series. (The dividing mark occurs in volume 7, out of 12 volumes total). At the pace the anime is currently going, there's no way they'll be able to fit both arcs in just 37 episodes. Unless they speed up real soon, the currently scheduled season of DN will only be able to cover the first major story arc.

This leaves two possibilities--either they'll make a new ending there, or possibly take a break between airing the first arc and the second. Despite how closely they've stuck to the manga, the first option isn't inconceivable, since the second live-action movie made up its own ending, which combined the climaxes of the first and second arcs. Personally, although what I've read about the live-action movie ending sounds absolutely fantastic, I would really prefer to see the whole manga animated faithfully.

Although I like anime and the drawing style involved, I'm not exactly a fan. The only real anime-series I've watched are Digimon and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

However, curiosity made me look at this thread, and just today I realized that I can actually watch the series from YouTube with subtitles (because feel I wouldn't get anything from watching the episodes in Japanese), so I did. Eight episodes in a row. Then I had to stop because eps 9 and 10 weren't translated yet.

I've got to say, no series since NGE, animated or otherwise, has given me this giddy feeling inside. Death Note is absolutely [I]beautiful[/I], mature, deep, exciting, thrilling, and downright [I]wrong[/I]. I just love it! XD

The best thing about it is definitely the main character being an anti-hero. I've never seen such righteous [I]evil[/I] being portrayed anywhere else before. I really expected Ryuk the Shinigami being the evil behind Light, but he's turned out to be more of a neutral observer enjoying the ride.

The best moment in the series so far was definately the ending of episode 7 (with Light and Naomi), and if there's more of that type of scenes, I really can't wait to see more.

Episode 9 was pretty intense. I have to say, [spoiler]L revealing himself to Light[/spoiler] was the last thing that I expected to happen. Well, you know, since I haven't read the manga, I'm pretty ignorant. :p But watching the anime is just getting better and better.

I was completely surprised when [spoiler]L was there[/spoiler] all of a sudden. But the way [spoiler]he acted in public, around all those dressed-up college students[/spoiler], was absolutely hilarius. I loved his speech. :animeswea

It was also very...different...to see [spoiler]Light lose control[/spoiler] like that. That was a very [spoiler]good move on L's part[/spoiler] though. I really didn't see it coming.

Anyway, I'll be impatiently awaiting the next episode. ;)

Okay, so I still don't know where the budget went, but I really liked how the last few scenes of episode 10 played out. Daddy Yagami's comments about [spoiler]how the power to kill itself is what's truly at fault, and that any ordinary person who suddenly received that kind of power would be unfortunate[/spoiler] are more meaningful in the anime version because you hear him say all that while watching [spoiler]Light blatantly ignore him.[/spoiler]

[spoiler]Light's inner callousness regarding his father's condition[/spoiler] is also more evident (or at least more distasteful to the viewer) than in the manga.

As of this episode, they've started to speed things up a tiny bit (compared to the manga, I mean). I hope that's a sign of things to come. The [spoiler]Yotsuba[/spoiler] arc could afford to be trimmed down significantly. Anyway, I don't know if this is just me, but the ending of episode 10 gave me the sense that "this is the real beginning." Light and Ryuk's conversation, plus the music, built things up splendidly. I especially liked Ryuk's final remark about [spoiler]all past (human) users of the Death Note meeting with misfortune[/spoiler]--combined with [spoiler]Light's utterly blase and uncaring expression,[/spoiler] it was the perfect note to stop on.

Episode 11 holds the promise of [spoiler][strike]Aya Hirano[/strike] MisaMisaMisa![/spoiler] I'm also anticipating the introduction of [spoiler]Rem.[/spoiler]
