Guest Akito
Ok, get this, according from one of my contacts, there are two things that are coming out that i really want to get. 1st thing, some company(forgot the name) is making a new compression, 100MB into 1MB(U can download entire anime series in minutes!)!! 2nd thing, another company is making a CD that can hold 30 GIG's! Bad part is, it needs a new CD burner, with a blue laser, not a red laser, to burn the CD, somethin bout smaller gaps in the 30 Gig CD. Now, let me tell u something cool, with this new compression tech and this 30 Gig CD, u can hold, bout 300 Gigs on this 30 Gig CD!! Isn't that cool or what? But my contact didn't tell me when they are releasing it, there's some bug's in the CD and Compression thing, but I CAN'T WAIT TILL IT COMES OUT!!!! King Penn
won't the quality of the cd diminish with all that compressed onto it?

No, compressing stuff doesn't diminish the quality. What does is like transferring anime from a tape onto ur computer, or from ur computer onto a tape. Fall
I like the compression bit. I'm not too sure on the CD bit though..... I don't have a CD Burner..... Bu that's be kewlio..... I can download all my files I need for my computer to run PROPERLY in about 1 or 2 minutes! :excited:
Desbreko
It's not a new type of CD, it's just a DVD. The maximum a DVD will hold is about 30 GB, but they need a better laser to burn and read that much. They need a narrower laser so they can burn and read smaller pits and plains. I haven't heard about this new compresion, though. That'd be really cool.
(<AA>)
:drunk: thats delicious...I magine the internet with that kind of software!!!Oooh wait, this compress thing is like a zip thing Right? PS:Can I add u to my messenger buudies list Akito?

My contact said that they were making this disc to surpass DVD's! Think about it, a normal CD Disc that can hold as much as a DVD, but it's cheaper! That would beat the Recordable DVD's and their players! Looks like we all gotta save up money for the new drive.
Hinata
If someone can come out with a quality better than a DVD and more capaple of holding more than a DVD I would be shocked....just look at all this money ppl spend now on DVD's and so forth...It would have all been a waste...But hey luckily for me I'm too broke to worry about any of this....LOL

well, I havent heard 'bout this but i can say that in principle the blue laser thing is correct, if u used blue light, the wave length is smaller, so... I'm stopping there, ok, cos I don't want to bore you all. the point is- the blue laser idea works.
Darkness
Please just let me know when it's coming out. It'll probably cost a small fortune though. Hell, I probably couldn't afford it!
liamc2
yeah i read about this ages ago in the guiness book of records in the library O.o. .don't ask. .any how its got 30 gig of space on the cd and the cd itself is green, as opposed to the slight gold of dvd and silver of cd. . liamc2
you don't burn cds? we have a burner and its a life saver, i mean I have to take whole TMM (codename for Multimedia) assignments and pictures which can be up to 20 mg, no way in the world could i email them or let alone take them in on disk. So i copy them to my trusty el cheapo cd, take it into german, use the computers with the WCD reading capabilities (the normal school ones can't) then copy the stuff of the cd to my home drive and everything is ready for my TMM class:D (did anyone understand that besides me?) I have three cases now in my car each with 50+ CD's in them...and I have boatloads more in my house...CDs are all over the place, I am so disorganized

My brother, who's a computer engineer, said that the discs are normal DVDs, but using a laser with a narrower wave length, such as a flourine laser, (which are really expensive to make right now) you would be able to fit more on a DVD because the pits and plains would be smaller. A normal DVD is capable of holding around 30GB, but with the current lasers, you can't put that much on one because you can't burn the pits and plains that small. There needs to be some advancement in laser technology, to make the short wave length lasers cheaper. That way, it will be practical to use them and just one DVD instead of using two DVDs and a laser like the ones we're using right now. This came from my brother who actually works in industry and hears about these things. Not just some "contact".

I haven't heard about the memory compression technique, but it doesn't surprise me -- I know that particularly with the advent of the Internet, more and more companies are looking for ways of compressing data, rather than just developing new storage media. Isn't it funny how, regardless of the topic, Akito has an industry contact? If only the rest of us were in that situation.

Desbreko
I wasn't making fun of your contact, I just don't tend to believe stuff when people say they heard it from one of their "contacts" without saying what that contact is. Maybe what you're talking about is different than what I'm talking about. It is possilbe that they are developing a new type of disc.

Dan L
well well well... It appears that akito was right all along. I just read this article in newscientist... I quote their exact words... "A new data-compression technique is causing consternation with a claim that it can shrink virtually random data up to 100 times without losing information. This would vastly speed up Internet video and boost memory capacities" sounds good, but there's always a 'but' aswell... "But compressing data that's truly random shouldn't be possible. 'I am inclined to be sceptical', says Vinay Vaishampayan, a mathematician at AT&T's Shannon lab in NEw Jersey. Florida based ZeoSync, which dreamed up the technique, has so far refused to say how it works, citing peending patent filings" ... I would never have beleived it...
