Okay, then according to that link, I'm not as concerned. It was announced (as I mentioned above somewhere) that Japanese officials were going to be releasing some amounts of irradiated vapor from coolant towers so they could alleviate pressure on the system. Therefore some amounts of these isotopes should have indeed started showing up.

Didn't the outer walls of the plant (or at least the reactor core) blow? Last night at about 4am there was concern of a partial meltdown in the core. The hydrogen build up from releasing pressure caused the outer walls to blow - and now there's predictions of a second explosion.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12724953

I read yesterday that there were excessive levels of radiation around the plant and 3 people are already being treated with radiation poisoning. 100,000 were evacuated yesterday near the planet, now 200,000. They're pumping sea water into the reactor to keep the rods cool, but apparently the tip of a few rods were exposed and caused a leak. I'm betting if the reactor isn't controlled - or the sea water tactic fails - there could be another Chernobyl. The second explosion is predicted to again damage the outer walls of the reactor and the Japanese government has said the second explosion (this is in reactor 2 but at the same plant) will damage the outer wall, but not the metal casing and the plutonium and uranium in that plant shouldn't be exposed.

We hope.

UPDATE: Make that 22 affected by radiation. However, that info is from the Sun - they're notorious liars when it comes to celebrity gossip, so I don't know if I should trust them at all. Edited by Vicky

From one glance at their updates I can see that these people are clearly a bunch of moronic idiots with no concept of empathy or English. Most of them weren't even alive during Pearl Harbour, and probably only know a bunch of crap they learnt in a biased history lesson about America's greatness in the war. Sorry guys - no offense intended to anyone else.

Karma's a *****, then maybe something will fall on these moronic heads. Like a flying brick. Thrown by myself. With fire ants on it. Edited by Vicky

I was walking down the street today, and a pair of nice-looking Korean ladies said they were students and wanted to ask me a question for a survey. I didn't have to go anywhere in a rush, so I told them sure. Next thing I knew, they were preaching about how the earthquake is some kind of Biblical sign of the end times. It was much easier to extricate myself than it would've been in the U.S., but the whole encounter was pretty startling. While there are always people who interpret tragedies like that in the States, I never imagined I'd encounter the same sort of stuff in Japan.

It's repulsive, and there's no excuse for that sort of idiocy. However, it would be interesting to juxtapose those FB / Twitter statuses with the statuses of people who were wishing Japan well. I can almost guarantee you that twice as many Americans were praying for Japan, thinking about Japan, and donating to relief efforts for Japan. The media likes to show people at their worst -- let's try to remember that most Americans (most people in general, whatever their nationality) are doing everything they can to help. I'd like to see an article about that, for a change.

The whole ordeal is just terrible. I can only hope that all of this will work out with out another Chernobyl incident. All of that beauty and cultural artifacts within the vicinity of the plant... if those things are just left and abandoned to nature... It'd be a catastrophic loss. I can only imagine how much of a scar it would leave upon the land and its people. I truely hope there is no further mishap.

But as for the subject at hand. Hearing and seeing images from Japan is just so heartbreaking...I don't have any money to donate, but I'll certainly try once I can. And I'll continue to pray for everyone affected by this.
I agree completely. =( Especially the empty stores. I've donated as well.

I just wish there was something more that we could do. If I had a lot of money somehow, I would fly a helicopter over there with blankets, gasoline, food and clean water and things and help out whoever I can.

I'm just glad that private organizations are sending search and rescue teams. I don't remember the name of the team, but they're located in Virginia I believe.

Another fire breaks out in reactor 4 at Fukushima. Three explosions, two fires....

Things do not bode well. It almost seems as if God himself wants to teach humanity a lesson.

You possibly meant nothing by this but I can't accept that right now, not after watching this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Edy6ztOQFo

I thought it was horrible someone could actually think like that. (Though you almost certainly didn't so yeah I'm not trying to offend you I was just reminded of the vid.)

I most certainly did not... and no offense taken. I meant it as more of an ironic sense of things. That ***** is glad for the deaths of thousands of people? Because of her prayers? I can't stand people like her. They make me wretch. And seethe with anger. THOUSANDS are missing or dead. And she's happy that her god did that? Nowhere is it said that the Japanese are atheists. In fact, If I'm not mistaken, the majority of the Japanese are Christian or Buddist, right? Buddism was around LONG before Christ. She really should get a grip on the reality of things.

I wasn't raging over that video but rather that I know there's actually people who think like that out there (from personal experience, since I worked at some door-to-door kinda thing for my summer job for Child Care Africa and DAMN). I was kinda thinking she might be trolling anyways, not too sure though since she did it rather convincingly.

Also, aren't the japanese mostly Shinto?

To clarify for some people, Japan is largely Shinto and Buddhist. Only a very small fraction [1-2%] are Christian.

I find it irrelevant either way. If that woman meant what she said, that's one thing -- she's giving other Christians a bad name, which I am quite frankly used to at this point, as one myself.

However, if she's trolling, then that just brings a whole new level of idiocy to the table -- she's using a humongous tragedy and catastrophe to essentially get on her soapbox and create this caricature of how this belief system is thankful that this happened to Japan. I can tell you right now that I have seen nothing but love and outpouring of support for Japan from every belief system [heck, the main campaign is called Pray for Japan!], so she's just essentially picking a fight. But I guess that's the point of trolling, after all.

Either way, whether you're a Christian that truly believes all that, or a trolling idiot wanting to get a rise out of people is irrelevant. Now is not the time to get on your soapbox and preach about how wrong either side is. There's a country that's in a big mess right now, and no one -- especially them -- needs to hear it. Edited by Sangome

People, like her, are already saying how it's a sign of the end of the world, and that it was the hand of God which is what I meant by ironic. If anything, its helping nations come closer together as a unified world.

And thank you for clarifying about the religion part of this. Edited by ExcelExcel

This quake has also caused some significant disruptions with airlines here in Australia. A couple of our domestic low-cost airlines fly regularly to several Japanese cities and a relatively large number of people have been travelling from Tokyo to northern Australia over the last few days. I came home from far north Queensland just yesterday and just noticed the large volume of people arriving.

It's definitely been a horrible experience for everyone, particularly in and around the Sendai area. Best wishes to everybody in Japan - and I urge everyone to donate what you can for the relief efforts.
