Anyone who's played the Final Fantasy series knows that some of the games vary in character styles. Many people prefer the super-deformed versions to the more realistic. That's been a long time debate that's atcually resulted in the style that you have seen in FF IX. My question is, what Final Fantasy game had the best style of characters and/or character designs?

Definitly 2D sprites... Cecil and Kain from FFII looks really cool. So does Setzer and Shadow from FFIII.

Ahhhhh... The good old days..... Wait a minute! I played through FFVII before those... AGH! I missed the good old days! *bangs head against wall* :bawl:

I think he mneans like the super deforemed ones like FFI-VI. IF you had a life sized t.v fix's characters would look almost real...

But FFI-VI characters are 2D sprites...

Here's how I group the different catagories of characters types:

2D Sprites: I, (we didn't get II or III in the US) IV, V, VI (these games are on either the NES or Super NES, so they have to be 2D Sprites. And yes, FFV was released on the PSX in the US, but it was originally released on the Super FamiCom, the Japanese Super NES).

Deformed: VII, IX

Realistic: VIII, X

If VII and IX aren't deformed, then you have to drop that catagory all together.

VIII's and X's characters are realistic... You can tell that just by looking at them. How they're actually propotioned right and how they almost look real (more so for X).
I, IV, V, and VI's characters ARE 2D sprites... That's technically what they are...

So if VII's and IX's aren't deformed, then there isn't a deformed catagory at all...

It's a fact that the characters of Final Fantasy IX are meant to be super deformed. That is what the creators had in mind. They wanted the gamers to get an innocent game that harkened back to the days of pure fantasy before they went on with the more realistic art style found in FFX.

It's true that FF VII's were in anime style, but when you walk around in the game they have huge heads and funny proportions. Whether that was intentional or not, it allows them to also fall into the super deformed category.

Considering the fact that in most of FFVIII's fmv's, their skin was perfect. (Could just be me)
FFVII's character dimensions rules, I think their block hands has to be a trademark amongst it self.
But 2D dimensions, from my opinion are classics. But thats how every old RPG started out. Hmmm...

um........

I

like it hard, sexy and with just the hint of Kinkyness

And i prefer the style of FF7, and as wierd at it sounds very few polygons, it just made it more retro-ish.

For me it's a two way tie between realistic and the 2d sprites... Weird. Honestly I've always like old-school better so I voted 2d. I don't like the deforemd ones, I though they looked stupid, but ff7 was still a great game and the fmvs were really cool.

The style I really like is realism! I don't get the story if there superdeformed! 2 bit Sprites are okay, but you can barely see what they're doing like in ff7.:(

:smirk: Snake
Well, I'll clear up a little confusion here. Although the characters in FFVII are super deformed(except in battle), they're not two dimensional sprites. Rather, they're three dimensional polygonal models. I feel that although they're undetailed, their animations provide cool touches....something most sprite based games aren't effective in.

I liked IX's characters the best.. I like the way that most of the characters wern't humans ^_^ Steiner and Amarant being the only ones.. and amarant is arguable.. cause look at his trance.. O_O'

i'v always had a thing for the "not quite normal" characters.. thus my crush on Freya, the lovely rat lady from Burmecia. :)

well, the graphics for FFVII/IX are quite deformed. VIII's graphics were perfect. but the graphics from the original FF's were really kawaii.

if the original graphics that were used for Setzer, Shadow, Kain, Bartz, and the other originals were used more often, i think it would be a bit better.

but the animations in the originals was almost garbage. i mean, if FFVII was on SNES, think how crappy Omnislash would look. and Lionheart looks better than OS. what if all the PS animations were on SNES? that would be pathetic.
