Dan L
In the.. relatively short time I've been here, I've seen many people who say they don't like it when anime is referred to as cartoons. Or even worse, when cartoons are referred to as anime. I wholeheartedly agree. But what do you think it is that makes anime better? or maybe some of you think anime is not as good? Personally I think that anime is generally far more creative than our own form of animation (obviously, there will always be exceptions). Most anime is set in either a different timeline, or what I can only describe as a 'strange version of Earth', where everything is essentially different. Anyway... that's not exactly what I was trying to say.. but it's as close as I'm going to get today.
NorykoAngelcry
Though I know I can not speak for everyone, my reasoning is pretty easy I suppose - for me at least. Cartoons - the cute and cuddly television shows, where no one gets hurt, and good guys always win. Anime - More of an adventure and action show. There is death, and usually lots of it. There is much better stories, since both good guys and bad guys can lose their lives. That is a pretty rough summary of the two, I know. I suppose when I think of cartoons (as much as I love them), I think of Bugs Bunny, the Smurfs, Tom and Jerry. They are all great cartoons, but there is no serious action that my mind craves to watch. And when I think of Anime - I think of Cowboy Bebop, with a gun toting, martial artist, bounty hunter, who isn't afraid to lose his life, and comes pretty close many times. I also think of shows like Record of Lodoss Wars - This has a lot of good and bad guys, both sides taking heavy losses, even in their key characters. All the while, most of these Animes have some great storylines to go along with the action, while cartoons simple go show to show. If you are a real anime fan, you know you can't just pick up in the middle of the season, and find out why certain characters act the way they do. I also think of sounds during the movies. In cartoons, it is all cheerful, and makes you know it is fun, where Animes will put in suspensful music, and have more realistic sounds. When I watch an Anime, it becomes more of a real life movie for me (I have a HUGE imagination). I try to put myself into the roles of the characters, and see if I can feel what they feel, or wether I would do what they do. For the same reason I love action movies, I like Animes (not the only reason) - they have violence, explosions, and death. Now, it may be simply because I am a guy and was brought up to CRAVE these simple things, but even more then that, Animes can do things which real movies can not (or have not been able to do yet). Ok, not really sure if this answered anyones question, but it is the best I could do ^_^

amibasuki
some of the reasons I like anime better is because the animation is just more appealing to me. (most of) the cartoons they have on tv now suck, both animation-wise and content-wise. more importantly, characters in anime are more complex. and like NorykoAngelcry said, there's more of a plot to anime than regular cartoons. k9*
you guys pretty much answered for me as well :D , but my main reason, i guess is the fact that there is a storyline that continues on, which gives the characters a lot more depth  (but it is bad to come in the middle of a series-i still haven't been able to see the cell saga  )
TheGodlyME
Anime is just better. There's better story lines, the characters have more depth, the girls look better:D, and the animators aren't as restricted with the blood and gore, making it more bloody than any publicly exhibited show in the good 'ol USA. The characters obviously act more like real people(while not destroying a planet or some such thing) and the hero can be hurt, brought to the brink of death, or go over it and die. The villan has more of a chance, therefore giving the story more suspense. Another reason that anime is so easy to like is the fact that it's harder to get. Usually things harder to attain attract more attention. Staying with that reasoning, the kind of content is also hard to find in American programming, due to the different senses of values. Someone being shot through the head is a perfect example. It's more common in anime, where it's sometimes shown, rather than the taboo in America. If you want to put it a simple way, how could you hate it?!!!!
Ryuujin
Well when you think of "cartoons" you think of The Flinstones, Tom and Jerry, ect. they are all nice cartoons that are playful, happy, and funny. But anime is more murder-death-kill, Anyone can die, and the series would still go on. Can you imagie that? Tom and Jerry becoming Just Tom? And in Anime the series continues and not different each show, which means that making an anime would be much harder, the longer it is. But most of that already said by NorykoAngelcry :smoke:
Duo Maxwell
one thing I hate about some cartoons is the cheezy 'australian' accents in shows like lupaka and flipper, blinky bill and stuff like that with an australian theme
SaiYaNgUrL
cartoon: the shows you watch when ure a baby anime: a more adultish show that is more appealing to preteens/ teens ok, also anime itself is realy cool. the drawings are good, the blood and gore is good, the weapons are tite, and the characters are cool. Cartoons are more babyish with no weapons (except for the ocassional pies) and practically no big funny parts. in anime, i can laugh for minutes without end. hehehehe. ( i jus thought of hte first episode of trigun and how i went hysterical) (the love and peace episode was good too. i think it wuz the 5th one?) anyways... cartoons have less action than anime, which makes anime a whole 100 levels above cartoons. when people refer to anime as "silly little cartoons" i get so pissed cuz cartoons are silly and little. Animation is NOT! (ewww james mcintosh trying to imitate sakura when he is jus trying to mock it wants me to slap/sock/kick him silly) ok. that's jus my opinion. hehe.
