Dragonballzman
Well, I guess that means ppl like James think I'm a complete and utter dumbass! :cross: Oh and James, if using short-hand words makes you look stupid, then why did you put "lol" at the end of your post? :naughty:

Yes, we crazy Americans.... When I was in second grade, I was deep into Tolkien's The Hobbit. We had spelling tests back then....we were required to know how to spell such and such an amount of words.... On one occasion, two of them were "favorite" and "color." I put in the extra us, and ended up getting a fifty percent on my spelling quiz.... I was most upset.... And as for the problem at the beginning of this thread....it made me laugh, a little. Not in a derogatory way or anything, but simply because I could identify with the situation. Although I've not had any close friends that minded large words, I used to annoy the heck out of the rest of my classmates...great fun, that was.... Duckie
I'm smart. It's just that around my friends, I can't really be very smart. I have to make everything so that they can understand, even the smartest of them. I was put in the "smart-people" advisory. Just to let you know, advisory is like homeroom at other schools, but it's 40 minutes long, and it really sucks this year. Last year, we played football most of the time, because our teacher didn't care what we did, but this year, our teacher is terrible. She makes us write 'I will follow directions in advisory class' 25 times if we talk, and we have to add 5 if we make a noise of any sort during the time we're writing. Anyway, everyone seems to think I'm smart, but I don't really think so. If I ever say that I don't think I'm smart, my very idiotic friends will disagree. Except Lauryn, who seems to think I'm a dumb blonde, which I'm not. My hair is brown. It has been for half my life. I haven't had hair in the dreadful color that she mocks me for since I was about 5. It's not even my original hair color. I hate how I get off-topic like this. It's kind of hard to express yourself monosyllabically enough for stupid people to understand it. :P
mornigndew
I rarely heard about question like this. I heard about "Is it a crime to be ugly?" more often. To answer your question; for jealousy people, yes it's a crime, because they're just jealous because you're smart and better than them. Guest ZYFER
don't worry much of what people say, more often they are simply afraid of your intellectual superiority. They realize they are not that smart so they try to turn it around against you somehow. its more immaturity then idiocy on their part.

Big difference. :)

I normally stick with a maniacal laugh or a ' ' smiley... or when in IMs, 'haha'.. simple eh? About the topic... yeah I feel more intelligent than those around me... but it doesn't really get to me that often, unless they do something 'funny' when I'm around... simple minds are amused by the simplest things... like the other day, some asians were sitting across from us in the food court in the shopping centre (I was with my friends from work), and my friends said 'Passports, please' to them.... and I didn't think it was that funny, but hey, that's just me. Most of the people in this damn town would find that hilarious.
BabyGirl
Originally posted by Nerdsy I.E., Me being 14 and still liking Power Rangers...
...and me, I'm obsessed with Star Wars. And I'm quite comfortable calling myself a nerd...it's a title that my close friends have placed on me after I started saying what a nerd I was. And it's true...it fits me perfectly :p Anyway, on about the intelligence thing. DBZChica...you said something about "blah blah blah but I'm more intelligent than them" (or something I don't feel like finding again). That is almost blatant egotism. I have friends that aren't quite "up there" in vocabulary like I am, or as well-versed in literature...but I don't call them less intelligent than me! They're my friends, and I respect the fact that they might not understand the "big words" that I use in every day speech. For the sake of caring about my friends, I have conformed my way of speaking to fit them...around some of my friends I use low diction, (yeah, I know that's used in poetry, but for the sake of relating it to my point....) and around a few I'd use middle diction. Why get mad about it? I don't find it any more intelligent when people call themselves intelligent and place themselves above other people...especially ones that are their friends. I think that's crude. If you feel the need to express this plethora of words you harbor...then use that gift to write or something. Put this obvious passion you have into essays for school or journal writing...channel it in a positive way...not in one that hurts others around you.

I particularly hate it when people make some joke or something if a large word is used...as if using large words is somehow a bad thing. So I think that DBZChika is actually bearing the brunt of "anti-big-word" friends...as opposed to her proactively saying "they're dumb". And I think many of us get that sometimes...others making a joke when bigger words are used. 'tis a shame...but I do agree that by the same token, if you ARE infact more intelligent than someone (and there is no shame in being more intelligent than someone lol), you shouldn't rub it in their face etc..
Guest Voodookanaka
it does not sound right 'cause its 'laughING out loud' which would be traditionally wrote *laughing out loud* U dont have to b smart to be a nerd, and on another note, from what ive seen many many members here are complete nerds. liamc2
this reminds me of the statement: 'Small minds are amused by small things' and my friends and my retort: 'and even smaller minds look on in disgust' ----- well I could be called an intellectual, but I tend not to do the stereotypical thing and do the whole 'i'm so smart, listen to my smartyness' Its more fun to play the fool:whoops:
