Gay Penguins! Yay!

I'm sorry if this is spam of whatever, BUT THE WORLD MUST KNOW!(sorry for the caps. and this all seemed like a good idea at the time...) Anyway, enjoy!

SUMMARY: Officials at the New York Aquarium finally realize that the
most dedicated couple in the penguin enclosure is a pair of males.

Wendell and Cass would be more comfortable in a Greenwich Village one
bedroom apartment than their current home at the New York Aquarium.

The male penguins, each about 14 years old, can't get enough of each
other. The couple has been together for the past eight years, and the
two have sex with each other whenever they can, which is often.

Presumably penguins can tell the guys from the gals, but aquarium
officials apparently can't. For years they thought the pair was one
of each. The truth didn't come out until aquarium staff carried out a
blood test.

Angie Pelekedis, a spokeswoman for the aquarium on Coney Island,
said: "They're one of the most dedicated couples in the penguin
enclosure."

Penguin keeper Stephanie Mitchell added: "I was only seeing one mate
with the other, but then one of the other keepers saw it happen the
other way round so we did a blood test that proved they were both
male.

"Cass tends to be a rather aggressive bird. Wendell is very nervous;
always has been. He's on edge all the time. They're currently in a
dispute with another couple over their nest. It seems to be one of
the most desirable places in the penguin enclosure."

Yay! Are you all corrupted yet? Good. I'm quiet done now.:smirk:

Actually that's quite interesting. I just read something like that called Biological Exuberance: Animal Homosexuality and Natural Diversity by Bruce Bagemihl.

"Bagemihl deflates the notion that most homosexual behavior is actually just a form of establishing social dominance. He points out, among other things, that such behavior is sometimes mutually reciprocal, and that it is often the subordinates in the heirarchy who mount their superiors."

"Orangutans have been known to engage in heterosexual anal sex, and cattle egrets have threesomes."

"It's also fascinating to note that two memebrs of some species (such as flamingos, penguins, and red squirrels) sometimes form committed same-sex relationships-lasting years or even a lifetime-that involve sex, traveling and living together, and raising young together."

Really interesting...go read it.

i actually saw something on that the other day...

in the book about it, it shows the chances of each speices having same sex tendancys, and it says in humans that most who are really arent they just want attention, and also says there are some who arent who really are

y do i feel this topic is going to get out of control?

This is interesting. There was a show on TV ages ago where they were discussing homosexuality and debating whether it was "natural" or not.

And one of the doctors on the program showed a video tape of two male octopuses (sp?) "getting it on" lol

Basically, from all the data that's been collected...it seems that animals can have such tendancies as well as humans...which means that it must be a part of nature.

I personally think it's nature's way of keeping large animal populations in check...lol.

Back in my high school days I remember an interesting point they brought up about mice. I don't know if anyone heard of this but a couple of scientist confined about 30 mice in this area and after about a month or two the mice started to have homosexual tendencies!

The scientist said that if this happened to the mice the same could be applied to other species as well as humans themselves. I kind of understand this theory but they were trying to apply it to prisions as well. In theory it sounds acurate to apply it to people in prision! However I believe much more evidence would have to be supplied before I could make a final decision on their theory!

In regards to the penguins in New York, my only response is this is the first time I have heard about this and I live in New York!:drunk:

Octopi ;) I made the mistake once of saying "cactuses" instead of "cacti" and got yelled at by a teacher. Now I always make sure I know when to use the "i"!

...

I think it seems natural that two animals would show homosexual behavoir. I dunno, just doesn't seem odd to me at all :p

It's funny though, these people (scientists, doctors) say it's ok for animals...but what are they saying about humans being homosexual? Are they against it? That would be an interesting study...

lol... i still want pictures...

Anyway, I like how this works... so many people think humans are the only ones who are gay... and since we have reason, something no other species has... well not to the same extent as us, people think we choose to be gay.... SO I wonder... does a mouse choose to be gay? Or perhaps an octopus?... a penguin?...

Maybe the fact humans have that ability to reason makes them think things that are almost outlandish and stupid.... but I think thats been proven... about a gajillion times.... ::sigh:: oh well, I dunno where I'm going with this.... but I gave up on people a long time ago... I have faith in a very small percentage of them.... I feel like watching a movie.... lol

They're just throwing 'I's' on the end of everything these days...

Oh well...

I guess animal homosexuality is concievable. Its not all that far-fetched. I've heard the story about orangutans and I belive it applies to ALL apes. If memory serves. I guess I agree with TN. If animals do it...I think it can be called natural. Seeing as how most animals don't have sex for pure pleasure anyway it must be something deeper than just sex.

I don't find it shocking that penguins, or any animal for that matter, can be homosexual. I do find it rather disturbing that TN wants pictures so bad...TN do you have a penguin fetish that we aren't aware of?

Just when I think I heard it all...Gay Penguins.....How interesting!

I am just wondering why it took they YEARS to figure it out. Don't they do checkups in the animals there? Wouldn't the vet have thought something was up when the female had a little something extra.

actually, male birds (or reptiles for that matter) don't have anything *extra*, vets HAVE to do a blood test in species that don't have apparent differences in the color (as an example) between the genders

ok, i'm done :lecture:

Exactly. This is why I can't see sexuality being such a big deal to everyone.

I mean, your being heterosexual is more than just your desire to have sex with women lol.

Your sexuality is much deeper than just sex itself. The fact that various animal species have multiple sexualities involved suggests to me that there is some natural reason why different sexualities are apparent in living things.
