James
I don't even know how to start this message. lol Today, Nintendo Company Limited confirmed that it will be jointly developing a new company along with none other than Square Co., Ltd.. The company will be headed up by Akitoshi Kawazu, one of the chief developers involved in the Final Fantasy series. Hiroshi Yamauchi (NCL's President) used his Project Q fund to pay for the new business venture. Furthermore, the new developer (owned 50/50 by Nintendo/Square) will be responsible for developing Final Fantasy games on Nintendo's GameCube and Game Boy Advance consoles.
Nihon Keizai Shimbun OSAKA (Nikkei)--Nintendo Co. (7974) has agreed to resume procuring the popular "Final Fantasy" video game software for its game consoles from Square Co. (9620) after a five-year hiatus, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun learned Friday.
In addition, Square will be charged with bringing Final Fantasy games to both platforms which can "play together", meaning basically, that GBA/GCN link-up Final Fantasy games could be an option. It is strongly rumored that the first new game to hit GameCube from this joint venture will be a GameCube version of Final Fantasy XI. I have only one thing to say: Resident Evil & Final Fantasy - watch out, Sony and Microsoft! ;)
Break
Whoa! This is big news! Final Fantasy and other Square games on Nintendo consoles again, this is cool! The GBA/GCN link up sounds like an amazing idea too, but do you know what they're going to use it for? And also, do you know what they are going to call themselves, or are they still going to keep their seperate names? Still, great news!!:)

I can't believe that it has come back to it's originator after so long, and I really do hope that we may see the old, but great Final Fantasy III come to GameBoy Advance. Man...I just can't hold in my excitment! I believe we will be seeing much of this news in the future, and darn it, am I going to try to learn as much of it as possible. I do hope that they keep the two system's (Playstation 2 and GameCube) Final Fantasy games pretty much the same, which is why I am going to have to ask: James, why do you believe that there will be more extras coming to GCN? This may indeed change the face of GameCube once more, not to mention GameBoy Advance. :blah:
Treble
Indeed interesting news this is, Im glad to see Square and Nintendo working with each other again. It be great to see all of the orignal Final Fantasy games porting over on the GBA with some inhancement in the game. But the best part of this news is that Square is developing games for the GCN, the more RPG games on GCN the better gaming library for Nintendo.:)

kizu
This is great news. Liquidus_Snake
Being a FF Veteran, this is very, VERY good news! Now i wont have to send my GCN back for my money so i can get a PS2 and FFX! Ooh i hope they come out with X on GCN...heh heh, Just wait...i know this is the turning point for Nintendo, when FF hits the shelves, Sony and Microsoft are gonna be put down. FF is what saved the PSX and got all the sales. back on Nintendo? Finally it's gonna help pull Nintendo from the fight and up into the winner's circle, i guerentee it. Guest Solid Snake
I want to again remind you that the Final Fantasy games will be released for both Playstation 2 and GameCube, but not Xbox. This is because they have been known to show their support for the Sony systems for quite some time and have become famous for it. With Nintendo, they previously had a partnership which they have apparently decided to go back on. There is no reason to join with Xbox, which I do not doubt their judgement for, and I believe they may, in time, drop the Sony platforms, which would be a great loss. You see, Sony and Square were both companies that droped their partnerships with Nintendo. Sony goes to make it's own platform, Square is brought along, and look how famous the result has become. Now that Square decided to help Nintendo once again, anything can happen. Just thought I would refresh your memory and clear everything up. :blah:
Kuja
um no... GC is getting different games than sony, so your half right and half wrong (i think) cause they will both get FF but they will get different games. i think the numbers will go on sony and the new (better) series will be on GCN
Charles
No, you're both wrong, hehe(Not really, I just wanted to say that). Square will not be parting ways with Sony. The company has enjoyed great success on that particular platform.
Square also reaffirmed that this will not affect PlayStation 2 development in any way and that the PlayStation 2 will remain the main platform for both Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XII.
I don't find it probable that they'll dish out lackluster Final Fantasies for PS2 and a "better" series on GameCube. Although it's been stated that they will development on a "new type of game," I'm sure that GameCube won't be Square's primary focus. We'll probably see quality games on each platform. While all of this is good news for the gaming industry as a whole, I feel that people are likely to get carried away with the news.
Nintendo of America has also reconfirmed the news, stating that Game Designers Studio plans to release one game for a Nintendo system before the end of 2002, and that the game will make use of the connectivity feature between the GameCube and Game Boy Advance. Nintendo of America also said that a Final Fantasy game would be a logical choice, but did not confirm that a Final Fantasy game was in development for either the Game Boy Advance or the GameCube.
Look at that bold statement. Don't draw too many conclusions yet. Sure we'll see Final Fantasy on the Cube, but let's not get carried away, when we don't even know which ones we'll be seeing yet. I personally do hope that they do release Final Fantasy XI on Gamecube(although it's not confirmed). If it's cross compatible with PC and Playstation 2, it'll just be more people to quest with. I'm pleased with the rumors of a possible Final Fantasy Tactics port for GameBoy Advance, as well. Hopefully they will totally re-translate it. Desbreko
Well, yes, no one has ever said that Square will be making Final Fantasy games on the GCN or GBA... But Square had said, around the time that the GBA was released, that they actually wanted to make games for the GBA. I read this on www.gamespot.com, so it's most likely true. Here's the official news from www.nintendo.com. If you can trust any other news about this, you can trust Nintendo. As you can see, neither Nintendo or Square has said anything about that game that's going to be released in 2002, or anything else. Maybe there'll be some info at E3, but until then I don't think that we'll be getting much information. We'll just have to wait and see... I really do hope that Final Fantasy XI is released on the GCN, though... If it isn't, I think that I'm going to have to get it for the PC. That, and I really hope that they remake the old Final Fantasy games for the GBA. It's been too long since I've played Final Fantasy II and III... since I didn't get the PlayStation collections. I heard that the load times are really bad.
Charles
I was just at Gamespot, and I immediately noticed that there was further coverage on the Square/Nintendo situation. It turns out that the affiliation will produce a company called Game Designers Studios.
Game Designers Studios will have only one staff member: Akitoshi Kawazu, who has worked on games in the Final Fantasy and SaGa series. Murakawa noted that the actual development of games will be handled externally, through the parent company SquareSoft.
Anyway, one particular section caught my eye:
In addition, it was initially reported that Fund Q--a fund set up by Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi to help encourage game development, focusing specifically on games that utilize the connectivity feature between the GameCube and Game Boy Advance--would also factor into the agreement. But Murakawa told GameSpot that Fund Q is only one of several approaches Square plans to take with the new company. He did, however, say that the company still may take the connectivity option into account. "The objective of the new company is to develop GBA titles, so GameCube titles are not a part of the plan," he said. "But because the Game Boy Advance and GameCube allow for link connectivity, we may make use of such a feature in the future."
I don't know exactly how to interpret this. Does this mean that the affiliation will result in ported classics to the GameBoy Advance rather than new games for the GameCube?
RicoTranzrig
That's great news...I guess finally their misunderstanding back in 1996 or 95...finally got settled...more or less...I really hope that the new alliance will be able to make games for GCN and GBA, not just old remakes and translations...
Guest Solid Snake
Originally posted by Crazy White Boy I don't know exactly how to interpret this. Does this mean that the affiliation will result in ported classics to the GameBoy Advance rather than new games for the GameCube?
Yes and No. I believe that this means that the new company plans on re-making the past Final Fantasy games, which is why they chose to have someone who had experience in that area before now working to make the games even out on GameBoy Advance. If this is true, then I await the Final Fantasy III remake. The part you are wrong about is simply that you skipped the last sentence in your reading. It states that "because the Game Boy Advance and GameCube allow for link connectivity, we may make use of such a feature in the future." I disiphered this to mean that Nintendo will be releasing the previous versions first, and as they go in order, will eventually come to work on the current Final Fantasy game for GameCube, at which point there will also be a GameBoy Advance version, and the two would be able to link up somehow. Does anyone else have a different view point on this subject? :blah:
TheVenomFactor
I have a ps2 and a gamecube so it doesn't affect me really but that's wierd cause in the january issue of official playstation magazine it said sony invested (or gave) 19 million dollar to square towards new ff games I guess that sqaure screwed them over.
The affiliation will mean a combination of things. Ported classics are probably a given, but there is significant information to suggest that Final Fantasy Unlimited will become available for GameCube/GBA. Remember, even though this deal is focused on GBA, Nintendo have made it very clear that there will be no deal unless GCN is somehow involved. Thus, Square really don't have much of a choice. lol
