Can you trust the media anymore?

I feel like I can't trust the media no more. So much lying, filtering of information, scandals, lies, lies and more lies.

Nothing can really be belived anymore, because governments and people in power twist the news we recieve to their benefit if we can. I estimate the amount of unfiltered, unbiased news we recieve is around...10%. That's why people find it difficult to imagine situations in other countries, such as...well, think of a fitting example.

It's all propoganda, and I started disbelieving the media greatly after seeing "News" from the Cold War, and the days of "McCarthyism".

HAS THE MEDIA EVER BEEN WORTHY OF OUR TRUST? THINK ABOUT IT. THE VERY WAY THEY GO AROUND GETTING INFO IS SICK ENOUGH. FOLLOWING SOMEBODY AROUND IN SWARMS, NOT LETTING THEM WALK FIVE FEET WITHOUT ANSWERING 15,000 DUMB QUESTIONS, EVEN AFTER THAT VICTIM KEEPS SAYING "NO COMMENT, I SAY! BACK, YOU DEMONS, BAAAACK!" THEY'RE HORRIBLE.
IT'S THE SAME FOR PRESS CONFERENCES. A PERSON WALKS IN THE ROOM AND OVER 100 CAMERA BULBS GO OFF, WHICH IN ITSELF ISN'T TOO COMFORTING. COUPLE THAT WITH THE RELENTLESS PROBING OF MORE DUMB QUESTIONS, ALL AT ONCE, NO LESS. I HATE THE MEDIA...

Well, I trust the media at some times.... like on the news, and CNN, and that.... but I suppose stories can get stretched on there too. Actually, that's probably when stories get stretched the most...

Whoa whoa whoa... we were actually supposed to trust the media??? And all this time I havn't

I've never trusted the media. When I was a kid I was taught about subliminal messaging (though it's illegal nowadays) and all the bad things that people have done in the media. So ya, it was just like, these people must be really desparate if they try to tamper with people subconsious minds.. Tsk tsk tsk.. but ya, rarely do I EVER watch TV anymore, and the only radio I listen to is a public service station that doesn't even really advertise. The only thing it rarely has commercials for are homemade commercials about upcoming concerts and info about what's going on with the radio station. So ya, media bad, Vandals good..

I don't trust the media... I barely ever watch TV at all, anymore... Sometimes I'll watch the news, and then there are a couple shows that I watch sometimes... But yeah, you can't really trust the media anymore. I sure don't.

And I think I'd be really tempted to punch a couple of them, if they swarmed around me like that... It'd serve 'em right!

I agree with Milliardo.

If you take a cynical view on the media right away, you're likely to view things through a certain prism.

The best way to get the right information is to view multiple media (TV, newspaper, radio etc) so that you have a broader view.

For example, I often find it hard to "trust" Fox News Channel because it is so blatantly pro-Republican. Whereas other networks (such as BBC World) are very neutral; they don't seem to lean either way and they "tell it like it is".

So you have to take media for what it is. Fox News is more about entertainment value than news...whereas CNN/BBC are more news-oriented and they both tend to spend less time editorializing and providing opinion -- which isn't news.

I don't know if anyone else around here listens to NPR, National Public Radio, because I'm not sure where all they broadcast. I consider radio media...and NPR is something that I trust. They're more like "semi-objective" news radio. They're privately funded and hold "pledge drives" every year to raise money from the public...I don't know if this entitles them to more freedom with what they broadcast or not

Did that make sense? If it didn't, I'd be glad to elaborate a little more...

I think it depends on the media though.

I'm involved in the media myself, and I've never witnessed any attempt to cover up undesirable information. Sure, I'm not involved in what you'd call the mainsteam media...I'm involved in entertainment media. But the fact remains, some publications you can trust...and some you can't.

For example, take a look at various gaming websites.

On one end of the scale, there is IGN. IGN reports news items with total objectivity...I've never seen an IGN report which includes editorial comment.

Then there are sites like Nintensity and TeamXbox. Both of these sites are incredibly biased and they lace their news items with unfair/untrue and speculative editorial commentary.

Editorialism is not news. And that is why I dislike the news on Fox News...because they often throw in their own little comments, or they add rhetorical questions as a footnote. So basically, even though they're reporting on a factual news story, they are also leading the viewer down a certain path of thought.

And that just isn't news: it's editorialism.

Editorialism is fine as long as you say that you're editorializing. But editorial comment is often combined with news, which is a shame, because it is passed off as 100% news.

I mean, when the Xbox was released...TeamXbox.com took the facts and then disorted them in ways which made the end result entirely untrue. This is a common occurrance on their website.

Sure, this is only an entertainment website...and not a political affairs site or something...but this demonstrates that in every area of media, there are always biased and unbiased news sources.

It's up to thoughtful members of the public to use their own judgement when deciding which news to watch and how seriously to take it.

But really, there can be no such thing "Unbiased media" or "Unbiased propoganda", can there?

It's basically a contradiction of terms, and media is used a sounding board for brain washing and seducing people into the thoughts others want them to have...

Information comes a cost...

yup, this is what i was wanting to say, the media broadcasts a view that is acceptable to where it is, and even in wording is biased. Not one newspaper (at least here) said why the alkaida did what it did to world trade centres and 'all' those in eastern countries explained it..........

oh and if u get chance read 'lying with statistics' i think its by a sociologist caled giddens.

Why is everyone so cynical? I don't subscribe to all of this conspiracy-style thought.

Any intelligent person can clearly see when a media report is biased. To suggest that we are somehow "fed information" is pointless.

A person who can think for themselves has the obligation to consider their news sources and to make judgements about how biased the media is.

There is plenty of unbaised news/media out there. For you to suggest that there isn't makes me believe that you don't know a lot about media...or you simply don't read/watch a lot of news.

Sometimes you have to dig a little to find it, but it's there. And sometimes it's just staring you right in the face.

As I said though, it's up to the individual to discern what is right and wrong...and how biased their chosen media is. To blindly follow media is to be as bad as the biased media it self

Of course, there's unbiased media out there.
Of course you'll find news that doesn't have a motive to brainwash.

But think about it this way, for the really important stories, why do only hear about certain events. Why do they let a story which seems just as bad as any other crime run on for months. The news just tries to catch the eye of a viewer. That's what I mean.

After all, uninteresting news won't get read, or put as the main headline. And to make it interesting, there has to a usually biased view, so to make believe what they are wanted to believe. Yes, it is easy to dig up news, put people don't have the time or the effort to do so anymore, and they don't really care either. They don't want to think about the news, as they will believe anything that is told to them. Intelligent minds will wonder about biased opinions, and the "Whole truth".

What I'm getting at, is that usually in important news, the whole tale isn't told by the media, to their own gain...
