dagnabbit, I am so damn disappointed with the game....

after waiting MONTHS for the game, it is finally released on friday (8 march) and at 9.06am, the game is purchased and is in my hands, I go home and have high hopes of the game, the time spent on the game was awesome?.
12 hours later, game completed, I was so friggin pissed off! The game only lasted for a damn day! I spent longer on MGS1!
Another thing I?m mad about is the character, Raided, I mean, who gives a monkey about the guy? I wanted to be snake, not some punk like him, ok, so hideo kojima said he wanted players to have a different perspective on snake, as we saw on the interview in the bonus dvd, but that still ticked me off?.
And what about the bosses, ok, so they were pretty cool, but they have nowhere near the depth and level of character as the characters of mgs1, give me psycho mantis, Vulcan raven, and liquid anyday! Not fortune, fatman and vamp, well?.vamp I actually liked?.
Though I still enjoyed the game, it still left a very sour taste in my mouth, what are your opinions on it?

I got it on friday too, at 5:26 pm.. mere minutes before the shop was about to shut.... damn buses...

anyway, I haven't quite finished it yet... Seph, where do you get all your time from? I need some too! I'm 10 hours into the game, just after you beat the Harrier for the first time (Maybe the only time, but I'm not sure yet ;) ), perhaps I'm going a little slow... but I beat MGS1 in 7 hours first time... spaced out over a few days though..
I've noticed that the atmosphere is a lot different.. it doesn't feel as dark, I think.. I dunno, it just doesn't feel the same as the first game...
And as you said, seph, the bosses just aren't the same either.. I've only beaten fatman, but it didn't feel like fighting psycho mantis, or any of the others from the first :( .

Okay, now imagine all of your misgivings with the game, but with no bonus DVD and you'll know how I feel.

I agree with Raiden being a somewhat poor character choice. Five minutes into playing as him, I was thinking, "Alright, this is pretty cool. They have another character that you can play as for a minute." Yeah and then I tried to save the game and Rose started yappin' about their personal problems. Two hours later, I was still playing as Raiden and Rose was doing even more yappin.'

I really don't like how a lot of things seem just like the PSX predecessor either. I know that they back it up in the storyline, but a lot of times I was like, "Didn't I do this very same thing a few years ago?"

The bosses were indeed lame too. Fortune was actually my favorite though, as she showed the most complexity. I did miss character complexity in this one. When the bosses died in the last one, you learned things about them that made them a person. Remember Sniper Wolf's death? That was film calibur. Vamp would have been cool, but alas, he just falls in some water.

I won't spoil anything for anyone, but the plot gets pretty lame towards the end.

Overall, it was a great game though. The graphics are great with amazing attention to detail. You can just sit there and shoot stuff to great amusement. Also, there are a plethora of secrets to uncover. Did you know that by hitting R2/L2 during Codec transmissions you can hear Snake's/Raiden's thoughts? Or that you can give Plisken a shaver? Yep, pretty deep. I was just expecting more overall though...

lol, you think YOU'RE sad about Raiden, you shoulda seen what Playstation Planet did! They went ranting on about how they hated him for hours! *Finds mag* Here it is:
"ARG! WE HATE RAIDEN! DIE RAIDEN, DIE DIE DIIIIE ARRRRGHHHH"
 To tell the truth I don't have a PS2 but my friend just got MGS2 today so he can tell me what he thinks of it. I heard that after Raiden comes in, all the detail drops dramatically...Is this true? (ie at the start you can shoot books and the pages flip over and look different, but after Raiden comes, they dont do anything)

Oh yeah, one more thing: Have you seen the little secret in one of the lockers? I hear that Snake can go in a certain one which has a piccy of a fashion model or summit in it, and if you stare at it, you can hear Snake drooling! :D

Hehe, yeah I saw the the locker trick, but I think Snake's doing a little more than drooling. Anyway, I didn't notice a significant lack in graphical splendor upon Raiden't debut. There's some amazingly detailed bird droppings, that prove this. I'm pretty sure that you can still "blow stuff up" too. When you fight Fortune, you'll definitely notice some explodable objects. It's just the stoyline that really takes a dive....

I thought the game could of been MUCH LONGER and by the way Safer it took u 12 hours it only took my 9 & 1 half hours! Who know maybe it was too easy too!!....yes it was way too easy!!!

Guest Solid Snake
Hmmm, I thought the game was very well orchestrated. True, it was short and the story may have been a bit lacking at times, but it had great image effects, the gameplay was awsome, and the levels were near perfect. As you can tell from my name, I loved the game thuroughly. The characters were so-so. I found Raidan to be a slight pain, but the time you spent as Snake was pretty fun. Then again, with two players you can explore and get so much more in depth with a game. I also found the bosses in MGS2 to be a lot more enjoyable than the bosses from the first game, but that may just be me.

Anyway, I found it to be great, even without the extra DVD. On what mode did you beat it in? I first beat it in Easy in around 11 hours, but I am sure that the higher in modes you get, the much more challenging the game becomes, which I can deffinitly account for from comparing Easy to Normal. Come back and tell me how you feel about the game after you beat it in Expert mode. Another way to have more fun with the game is to collect all the dog tags, something you may find fun to do on it's own. I hope you don't judge the game from what you have seen on a lower perspective, and give it a single more chance to prove itself.

Well I got a fair way through my friend's game, but then it wouldn't save it to my memory card... So, now when I get it, I have to go through it all again.... it was a bit boring from what I played of it.

I listened to everything that was said, codec, fmv, etc, I used no guide and started the game on normal mode, and I got stuck on that stupid bomb part for ages, I couldn't find one of the bombs....

Was it the one behind the locker door by any chance? I knew what I had to do there, but it only works if you stand at the right place by the locker... so it bugged me for ages, til I finally figured out how to close the door. I beat vamp this morning. I was expecting a little harder, as in... psycho mantis kind of hard.. to be honest al the bosses (so far) have been far too easy.. I beat them first time I tried.. that never happened to me in MGS1, except maybe when you fight Ocelot.

I didn't use a guide either and the bombs bothered me for about an hour. I lent my game to one of my friends yesterday and he already beat it, this is a very POOR game!!!

The graphics were very well done...and I didn't really mind playing Raiden...but what really ruined it was when I beat it...and that part where Otacon goes on about his past life near the end of the game. (The voice acting/crying sucked). And the ending also...after watching MGS1's ending and comparing it to MGS2...it's almost the exact same thing! Talking about controlling your destiny ...an now overused theme IMO...

BTW: If you compare pictures of Hideo Kojoma (Creator of MGS2) Before and after the game was developed...you'll notice a very distinct change in his appearance.

6.MERYL ISN'T IN THERE!*SPOILER* She isn't dead, said so offcially by Hideo Kojima.(Then whta's with the ending of MGS1 when you don't with stand the torture?)

If you look at Olga after beating her on the tanker, and call otacon, snake will say during the conversation 'I've had enough of tomboys'... so maybe it just didn't work out.. ;)

I've finished the game now, and I enjoyed it, though I thought they should have concentrated less on Raiden's so called love life....

One of the best parts is the whole 'Crazy Colonel' bit... that was hilarious... though I didn't understand the bit before fighting solidus, about that consciousness in the White House or whatever that was on about  ...

****SPOILER****
Well people I want to point out some stuff
1.Raiden majorly sucks! The love story had me puking.

4.Mei Ling?Where art thou?I want thou chinese sayings. Not Rose's enternal blabering about a pitiful relationship.

5.LIQUID!!!!YOUR GONE!

6.MERYL ISN'T IN THERE!*SPOILER* She isn't dead, said so offcially by Hideo Kojima.(Then whta's with the ending of MGS1 when you don't with stand the torture?)

7.Fatmna=The freakiest, stupidest and most annoying guy around on Extreme and Hard.

yeah, I didn't like raiden much, but he was put into the game for a reason, as was seen on the dvd given with the european version of the game, there was no love story in my opinin, just them complaining all the time

hah, mei ling is in fact in the game, when you are snake in the tanker, keep calling otacon to save and he will eventually get one of his saying's wrong, in which mei ling corrects him, you don't see her though, damn....

technically no, liquid isn't gone, he's just asleep in ocelot's arm, if that makes sense at all....

like was said by deus ex, after beating olga go into first person mode and look at her, and then call otacon and they will talk about meryl, apparently the relationship didn't work out, showing that the good ending in mgs1 where you withstand the torture chamber was in fact the true ending....

fatman is pretty easy even on extreme/hard, knock him down, shoot him in the head, and then knock him down again, simple when you know how, I would say that the harrier, vamp, and the RAY fights are the hardest on hard/extreme modes....

Another note on that point: and also a SPOILER: when you get your clothes and weapons back after being captured, snake says 'if you run low on ammo, you can have some of mine', then after that, he points to his bandana and says 'Infinite ammo'... and which ending did he get the bandana in? :smirk: ...
also... on a side note:

Simple.. Otacon never died in either ending so there's nothing to prevent him giving Snake the stealth suit afterwards :p

I've just played the game tonight for a few hours...as I rented it. I was reluctant to buy it, based on what I'd heard.

So here's what I think of it...

At first, I didn't like it. Why? Because every five seconds, you are being bugged by someone wanting to tell you something incredibly obvious. I found that the continual talking and communication broke away from the actual gameplay and it made me feel very frustrated.

However, as time went on, it seemed to calm down to a tolerable level.

I also watched the entire "making of" video...which was very good. It says that you should watch it after finishing the game, but for me...it helped me to understand the core principles behind the game a little more (especially as I was reluctant to read a lot of the babbling).

I was quite shocked by Raiden, in the sense that he is not very like Snake. Snake comes across as a hardened hero...whereas Raiden comes across as a quite feminine newbie.

However, I understand why Raiden was included. Playing from his perspective meant that when you encounter Snake, he seems more impressive -- Hideo Kojima wanted to distance the player from Snake a little at the start, in order to add a new impression of him.

And I think it worked.

I also think that Raiden is a cool character. He's not too dissimilar from many Japanese RPG characters, in the sense that he is a "very beautiful man", as Hideo Kojima puts it. I think that this is really a kind of metaphoric thing...whereby Raiden and Snake are opposites in many ways. But also, Snake is passing on his knowledge to Raiden...and Raiden, while inexperienced, is a sign of the "next generation".

The whole analogy of Snake being Kojima and Raiden being Kojima's development team was also a very good one -- I think it was cleverly included.

So even though I have yet to finish the game, I must say that I am pleased overall.

I wouldn't really rate this game any higher than its predecessor though -- I don't feel that it has particularly added anything new. Rather, this game seems to be more focused on personal stories of characters.

In terms of gameplay, I haven't seen many fundamental additions, apart from a few novelty additions.

Still, so far it's been fun...it's not the best game on the PS2, but it's a little deeper and more thoughtful than your average game. When I saw the making of MGS2 on the second disc, I think that helped me to gain a little more respect for the game, because I could see what the designers were trying to do.

So from that standpoint, I think they achieved their goal. From a gameplay standpoint, MGS2 left something to be desired.

I don't know....I really don't agree with them totally breaking away from Snake. I agree with you when you said:
However, I understand why Raiden was included. Playing from his perspective meant that when you encounter Snake, he seems more impressive -- Hideo Kojima wanted to distance the player from Snake a little at the start, in order to add a new impression of him.
But, I think that by the time you beat it, you'll agree that they totally overdid it. It's hard to take a character like Raiden seriously in this situation. Quite frankly, his looks have little to do with my dislike for the decision to include him to the extent they did.

Without spoiling anything, it becomes annoying saving a game and listening to he and his girlfriend sort out their personal problems. Not only is it unrealistic--it's ridiculous. It takes away from the realism of the game. In that situation, they would never allow personal situations interfere in such serious matters. The whole scenario seems melodramatic to me. If you chose to skip his whiny girlfriend's babbling, you're forced to skip through pages of text.

It took multiple games before we got to know the full Snake. Metal Gear Solid 2 reveals a little too much about Raiden in one game. We learn his entire background, his fears, and his entire persona.

Yeah, Kojima did a good job in letting us see Snake for the hardcore hero he is through younger eyes, but he took it too far. I believe that there should have been a way to play Snake's half of the quest as well. Maybe seeing Raiden though his eyes would have added to the quest as well.
