Modern Day Animes....

all new modern day animes aren't even animes i mean if you go old school to Astroboy you see that that is an original anime, but today you find that animes aren't even like animes. I mean look at Zoids, digimon, and dbz they all use computer animation in some/most parts of it. In the old animes they used fast pace action not making lines as movements or anything but when you look at dbz when they punch they use lines for speed, not in the old animes they make the punches nice and fast. Basically i want your opinion on which animes are better today or old.

Well I did like old school alot better then some of the animes of today that are a bit too comercialized if you ask me. But you are wrong on some points, DBZ does not have any CGI in it at all. I agree some of the fighting in dbz is really too repeative but I guess it all depends on what type of anime you are into and the willingness to believe nothing is impossibile. Also the reason they use the line effect in anime's is to show that they are quicker then the human eye can pick up its really done as an effect not just having an artist be lazy!

I like some of the new anime. Just because it uses cgi doesn't mean it isn't anime.... People still make sketches and such for the shows usually. And anime means 'japanese animation' so....if it's animated, it's still anime.... But still, I like some oldschool anime, but I like the animations of the new animes better.

First of all, I could barely even follow your post HG...try to use more punctuation. Secondly DBZ has NO computer graphics.

As for my opinion: I really enjoy the more modern anime. The higher quality the animation, the better.

No dragon ball doesn´t have CGI, it´s too old for that. I agree that anime nowdays are very comercialize. And did you see Saint Seya? there is noting more old school than that and has also some parts that uses lines to show speed, so this speed-line thing is not so new as you may think it is.

Let me try to reword what he was saying Justin: In the episode where Trunks battles Freiza, Freiza creates a giant ball of energy and throws it at Trunks.HG was stating that the ball was made by CGI instead of being hand drawn (I think he is right actually, who knows?)

I feel that the quality of animation should never be the main selling point of an anime, if the story sucks than who cares how good it looks?

Well how could you not like today's anime?! I mean, there's been a craze on Pokemon, which is still airing. There's currently a craze on DBZ, which is still airing. And a very small craze on Digimon, which is still airing. I'm sure most people here have been involved in atleast craze here, no? And if you have, that obviously means you liked that anime....

I like most of todays anime, but there's some I don't. Also, I find it more interesting and action-packed, than the old animes...

If you compare Digimon with Pokemon,I'd have to go with pokemon for prettier pics, and the plot wasn't all that bad,but it was bad...

Digimon,It gets less points for excesive use of CGI...but the plot was better than pokemon I guess...

I like to draw anime myself, And I know how hard it is to draw 1 good pic,and to make an animation, you need like thousands...so... using CGI to get away with STRANGE backgrounds was (As I see it) an easy way out,Thats why Digimon lost points...

Sometimes I'll watch reruns of animes just to look at the great pics :D

cgi isnt anything new in anime i seem to remember an anime called akira (what you've heard of it i am shocked) using cgi back in 1987 (that dna thing or whatever it was) if you dont believe me that they used cgi in akira check out the akira production report

Akira...That is a fine movie.

Anyway, I don't really care much for animation quality. Like Safer said, I prefer story and characters to animation.
CGI can enchance the animation quality incredibly, if used correctly (watch Metropolis, which is technologically an Akira of this time).

I agree with that. For me it is true with practically everything, from anime to computer games to regular films...but to stay on topic I prefer my anime to be drawn and animated at a high standard.

well, really i think the quality of the story and plot matters more than the animation quality and cgi. and in dbz, the put lines there to show that they're a helluva lot faster than humans. And like when goku fights cell, they show lines cuz they're constantly repeating instant transmission (i think) and fighting. The artists aren't lazy, they just draw lines to indicate that they're going FAST. i tend to go towards old-school, cuz i think they had better story lines, but new anime today is good also. and anyways, i don't see anything wrong with cgi. In fact, i think it looks cool.

Hey!!!
Gah! hard question.I have to agree with you about this whole topic.the first anime I ever watched was dragon ball Z. I gotta say, things were good back then, but today... the animation's just better, and that is something I just jump for.but today..the plots just aren't what like they used to be.What we need now is someone who'll keep the oldschool animes in mind when making a new one.

KawaiiRisu: In the future, please refrain from bringing back extremely old threads. If you find a long-dead topic to be particularly interesting, you can go ahead and create a new thread for the purpose of discussing the subject in question.

Series-specific threads are an exception to this, as we try to stick to a one thread per anime system. But general topics that are over a month or two old usually shouldn't be revived.

Thread closed.
