The Oscars

Hm, we've had a lot of movie-related topics in GD lately lol.

Anyway, I didn't watch the entire Oscar awards...they were just too long and boring for me. However, I did watch the highlights.

I was amazed to see some of the results, though I agree with most of them. Halle Berry (sp?) really deserved her award...and when she got up there, I felt incredibly happy for her. The same is true for Denzel Washington -- he's one of my all time favourite actors. :)

The only thing I disagreed with was best movie -- it should have gone to Lord of the Rings. I'm amazed that LotR didn't win more...it was such a fantastic movie -- a great combination of Australian & New Zealand talent. Just shows what the two countries can achieve when they put their heads together. ;)

I'm just wondering what everyone else thought of the awards. Which ones did you agree and disagree with?

I agree that either Lord of the Rings or Moulin Rouge should have won. Instead we got the same ole' cliché movie, A Beautiful Mind. I really wanted to gag when they announced that...I that thought maybe it was finally the time when a cool movie would win...like the fantasy of LotR or the mayhem of Moulin Rouge.

Sadly, they didn't!

Other than that award, the rest of them were pretty good. I wish Nicole Kidman would have won best actress, but Halle Berry (I am not sure of that spelling either) really did deserve it :)

A Beautiful Mind was an excellent movie and probably deserved Best Director (which it won) but I don't think it deserved best movie. That shoul dhave gone to Lord of the Rings.

Best actress... I totally agree that Halle Berry deserved it. I didn't NOT want to see Nicole Kidman win, just because I don't think she deserved it for that movie.

However, best actor... it's an absolute SHAME that Denzel won for Training Day... the movie got terrible reviews and I don't think that role played by Denzel was even nomination worthy (he even said that himself) it's terrible that he won and I think the only reason he did was because they wanted to support African Americans that night (as I'm sure you noticed) I'm not racist, but Will Smith was tons better than Denzel, and if they wanted to pick a black man, they could have picked him. I love Will Smith and he did an incredible job at portraying one of the most influential men in black history. Russel Crow (that hottie) would have been nice to win second time in a row, however we all knew it wasn't gonna happen. he is not to be overlooked. 2 years in a row nomination for best actor... and won it last year... I'll deffinantly keep my open for him int he future (not like I wasn't staring already)

But overall, my best time was Halle Berry. She's is so beautiful and an amazing actress. PLUS she is going to be a Bond girl in the next JB movie! WAI! lol

Hmm yeah, I don't think Denzel really deserved the award for the specific movie he was in...but I think that he has done so many fantastic performances in his life...he deserved recognition.

I mean, he was awesome in The Bone Collector...and I just think that in general, he should be acknowledged.

But I also agree about Will Smith...he was very good -- he would have deserved the award just as much.

I am really dissappointed that Lord of the Rings didn't win more...but I am glad that Moulin Rouge didn't win best picture or whatever. I mean, it was a cool movie in terms of visual design and direction...but Nicole's voice absolutely sucked...and the story was terrible (I had to stop watching halfway through because I didn't enjoy it).

I was happy that Halle Berry won Best Actress, but not that Denzel won for Best Actor. "Training Day" wasn't that good a movie, and Denzel said that it wasn't his best work, so someone else should have won it. LotR should have won best picture in my opinion. It was great. But what I liked the most was that "Shrek" won Best Animated Film. That was such a funny movie! Especially at the end when all the fairy tale characters started singing. That was funny.

Yes I was also really thriled when Halle Barrey(Sp) won. She really did deserve it, and with her reaction, you know that she point all her effort in her movies, so I think she definatly deserved it.

Denzel Washington I do not believe deserved it THIS year. But he has made so many wonderful movies that I was pleased to see him win even tho he didn't deserve it this year. I agree that I think Will Smith was a better candidate, but oh well. My favorite actor finally got some recognition so hey I'm happy!

It truly is too bad that LOTR didn't win, but I see where they are coming from for a Buetiful Mind. I mean think of the plot, a geniuse with skitzofrania, basically fighting himself, and recieves a nobel peace prize at the end. I mean it had to have been an emotion roller coaste, and all reviews were great! So yes I woulda rather had LOTR win, but a Beutiful MInd was a great choice!

Personally I would have also loved to see Rusell Crow win Best Actor. He's also a great actor, so I was personally torn apart between Crow and Washington.

My favorite time was when the French Circus or whatever came out and did those stunts. It was very cool, and how they had the movies they were portraying in the backround. Very cool!

well, one thing i was thinking, clothing seems to be dissapearing, wait, its just see through.... well i like seeing wemon in skimpy cloths, like any other guy would, but there should be a little more control. little girls wach tv, see there fav. stars in near nothing, and they want to dress like that. and if they dont have bodys like wemon on tv or in movies, they feel insecure, and want to go and have there body changed, to be preatty later in life.... do you know what i mean.

by the way, notice how jayloo did not show her b$&!@ts this year?

I'm going to be unpopular for this but I don't think that Lord of the Rings should have won. During the movie I kept shifting back and forth in my seat, it was way too long and not only that, it was really repetitive as well. Group meets big monster; group kills big monster; group goes on. Yes, it was a good adaptation of the books, but that does not warrant a great, best picture movie. Not to say that Beautiful Mind was that wonderful a movie either, I only saw half of it and it seemed to go majorly down hill after the first half hour or so.

Mulholland Drive definitely deserved best movie I think, it was really original, funny, dramatic, suspenseful, it had everything.

I'm really glad that Sydney P. (Im not even going to attempt spelling his last name) got the lifetime achievement award, he has always been an excellent actor, and has been a leading actor for the minorities ever since he started out!
I am a bit dissapointed with the Best Actor Oscar, though. I think it should have gone to Will Smith. I'm not saying that Denzel is a bad actor, but I think Will deserved it more for taking on such a role.
Best movie, I think, should have gone to Moulin Rouge because of its originality. The costumes, the sets and the music should have put it over the top, but I guess the SAG would not acree with me. A Beautiful Mind was a good movie, however, like BG said, it is too cliche.

I skipped watching the Oscars to Watch 'Bride of Chucky'. Kekekekeke..... Insainity reigns!

LoTR didnt win best picture? Dear god why not.

The movie may have been long, but it was great acting on the part of all the actors. And at the end the action was great, and it left you waiting for the next movie.

The only thing bad was that 30 minutes into the movie I had to pee from drinking my large soda o.0;;;;;;;....

Heh...

Who were the big winners I wonder? *wanders off to look*

Training Day was a great movie, and a very unique movie for Denzel, it was a very different role for him and he did a great job. I thought Russel Crowe did geat in A Beautiful Mind but he was no better then DW in Training Day. By the way Trainind Dayis a great movie.

LoTR should have received more awards than it did. It was an excellent movie. It should have been given more credit than it got. I was a little surprised that Denzel Washington and Halle Berry got the Best Actor awards. The hype was all over the Aussies and I was going for Russell and Nicole but in the end, the awards still went to 2 deseriving people.

I am very pround of Halle Berry that she won the best actress award, not only she was the first African american women to win an oscar but she also grew up in my hometown Cleveland, Ohio.:)

I loved the tribute that was dedicated to the great directors, actors, actress, singers, etc. it was very nice to see I was glad to see Aaliyah, she was a very nice young lady its sad to see her died at such a young age.

Anyways, I never did got a chance to watch "A Beatiful Mind", so I couldn't judge which movie to win but I did enjoy "Lord of the Rings" it did an outstanding job.:)

Gyah, I hear ya dude. It was a shame that LoTR didn't win best picture... But hey, if that other one was so great, I suppose it deserved it... But I was bitterly, BITTERLY (that's right, I used caps! o.o!) disappointed that Peter Jackson didn't recieve best Director... As far as I'm concerned he shoulda had that from the begining.. But James, I don't understand what you meant by ' a great combination of Australian & New Zealand talent'... I don't seem to recall that many Australians being involved in production... And It was filmed entirely in NZ, and directed by a New Zealander... I'm not trying to get anyone angry or anything but.. Yeah..

Hehehhehe, that's so True, New Zealander living in Aussie.

I think Peter jackson should have won best director, i mean, god he deseved it, a great New Zelander that man *Wipes tear from eye*. One of the reasons he diddn't win the best director, is becuase the americans don't usally award that title to some one not a who's not a 'good American director', and well, Peter Jackson isn't, he's a great new Zealand director, and he deserved that Oscar.

Yeah i agree with you Flash, there may have been some aussies on the production of LotR, but there were way more NZers, filmed in NZ & Directed by a NZer. Not being a Patriotic sellout, but this was definatly more of a NZ movie... i'm only saying this 'cause i don't want the aussies to steal any more of out stuff, like they claimed the pavlova, the buzzy bee & even the KIWI!!! Yes the KIWI, but i won't get into that...

BTW: the performers were from an amazing group called 'Cirque de Solile' -entirely made up of people, no animals

---------

mmm many observations were made during the Oscars (yes i did stay up to 12pm to see the end of it o_0)

It seemed that many of the technical and such people were Australians or New Zealanders.

I'd like to say good on them, as to all the other people that made those movies. .its amazing how many PHD's are needed, so many years of learning needed to do what they did well. .

dear god! someone else who agrees with me about lord of the rings!

I was glad that neither LotR or HP won best picture, I didn't like neither of the two, though LotR was better than HP, I still didn't like it....

best film? terminator 2 surely, lol, ok, hmm, I'm not too sure to be honest :p

Hm, since when did Australia steal the Kiwi? lol

And really, who would want to steal the Kiwi? hehe...just kidding. ;)

Actually, from what I've read (and seen on television), LotR featured a lot of Australians -- specifically in terms of special effects and financing.

Of course, all the extras were from New Zealand and the movie's director was indeed a New Zealander -- he did a very good job too. :)

I personally consider Lord of the Rings to be a New Zealand movie -- just as I consider The Matrix to be an Australian movie (considering both used American actors...which I kind of disapprove of somewhat).

But I think that the combination of NZ's fantastic scenery and direction...combined with Australia's advanced special effects production and photography, really helped to make the movie very special.

In any case, I think that LotR should have won -- it was an epic movie and far less boring than something like Gladiator...which won a whole host of awards at the previous Oscars.

Well, I didn't see Beautiful mind, so I can't judge it, but I saw Lotr and I can understand why it didn't win. I think that they could have done a better job with it. I'm glad that Halle won, eventhough I haven't seen the movie. It took 74 years for a black woman to win best leading actress. That is a shame because I know that throughout that long time, there have been those who have deserved it. As for Denzel, I fully think he deserved best actor, regardless of him being black, white, purple or whatever. Training day was a very good movie, and Denzel did an outstanding job playing his part! No matter what he thought, the academy and the people thought different. He's a good actor and being the bad guy was something new to him and he still kicked butt!!!!!

Also I think T N said earlier that Will Smith was more deserving. Sorry, Most people that knew anything about the champ thought that Ali wasn't a very good/accurate representation of his life. It only really focused on his tenure as champ (not even the whole tenure) , and it didn't go deep enough into his personal life. It seems that the movie was made with too much of a bias.

Anyway, besides the show being too long (the longest one ever actually) I was pleased with the results.

I movie can only be so long... and Ali himself watched over the making so it lived up to his standards.

Esspecially when making a biography of someone, you can only focus on certain parts. And since it's a movie, they are most likely gonna focus on more entertaining parts. If you wanna say it was made with bias to Entertaining plots, then yes you would be correct.

Think of it this way... if they made a movie about Hitler... would the focus on his life as a child and leading up to when he became leader of Germany and crap? or would they focus on what he did to the millions of Jews in WWII and other WWII related things? Exactly my point.

As far as Denzel goes... the movie might have been unique roll for Training Day and Denzel might have played it well, but it wasn't Oscar worthy. If they wanted to give him an Oscar because he "deserved it for all his other great works" then they need to wait til he makes a decent movie, then give him it. I don't believe he deserved it one bit...
