I got a call from my friend in New Jersey, and he said he looked up online that Nintendo actually made the Playstaton. He said that Nintendo was going to put a CD drive on the SNES but then it was scraped and they put on a cartige drive instead and sold the CD drive to Sony. Is this true?

P.S. I didn't know where to put this, the Sony section or the Nintendo section so I thought this is mainly on nintendo so I put it here. Sorry if it belongs in Sony section.

Yep, correct. Had Nintendo not backed out on the deal, the Sony PlayStation would not exist...and instead we would have seen a "SNES PlayStation".

Kind of interesting how things work out.

Nintendo originally intended for the PlayStation to add expandability for the SNES -- this was at the time when CDs were first being introduced. But Nintendo was unhappy with the quality of Sony's work and moreover, I think Nintendo realized that add-on units are rarely successful (SEGA, anyone?)...so it was really a combination of factors which ceased the project.

And of course, at that time, Nintendo began working with Silicon Graphics Inc. on "Project Reality" (aka Nintendo 64).

And now the PlayStation has become a successful console, thanks largely to Sony's unique marketing push and strong contact with third party publishers.

It's interesting to think that had Nintendo kept the deal going, PlayStation would not be what it is now...and maybe the entire industry would be different.

Nintendo may have had some part in the PlayStation as we know it today... Sony might have kept some of what was already there, and just added to it. Or, they could have totally redesigned it, and just kept the name.

LOL! Thats biggest lie I have ever heard of, Sony made Playstation, All Playstation products are made BY Sony, just like all Nintendo products are made BY Nintendo, and just like all Xbox products are made BY Microsoft. But in the beginning Sony did help make the SNES, and without that, there would be NO Playstation, so Sony owe's Nintendo big. Thats all I have to say

That isn?t necessarily true. A lot of products, in fact, MOST products are actually developed by third party companies, like Gamester and Naki. The platform companies usually only come out with one product for each category, meaning that they would only come out with one controller. For example, Sony made the Dual Shock 2, and Gamester expanded on the model to come out with the V-Force 2 ? a controller that is similar, but has ?special effects? that may or may not enhance the gameplay. Like Gamester, many other companies try to build on the products to their own standards, outnumbering that of the products released by the company who actually made the system.

Hence, Sony used to be a third party company that helped Nintendo, with their intention being to make something like an expansion pack on Nintendo 64, but for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Eventually, they got tired of Nintendo and created a platform that used an enhanced version of that expansion pack to make the Playstation you know and love today. Perhaps, without Nintendo, the Sony Playstation would have never existed. Or maybe it was Sony?s idea to make the expansion pack, Sony?s idea to break loose from Nintendo, and Sony?s idea to make their own system, which they would have created all by themselves. One can only guess, so any of these answers we have heard these past days may indeed be correct.

You must be refering to the CD-i made by phillips, which went horribly downhill. It was made after the SNES and not a lot was ever heard of it.

Of course it was made by Sony, but we are debating as to whether the Playstation roots were originally started by Nintendo. Please don't bring back such old topics to state something as obvious as this.

As far as I know, the Playstation became reality because of the Nintendo-Sony partnership they had at the time... Sony did live up to its end of the bargan to make the expansion for the SNES and they released pics of the prototype and a game or two. But it wasn't Sony who backed out of the partnership...it was nintendo. Why? I don't know I think it is because nintendo wasn't happy with it and went on to develop the N64. Sony on the other hand didn't want the project to die so they re-designed the prototype to their own liking. The end result was today's playstation. In a way it was sorta a stupid move nintendo backed out of the project but its a fact expansion parts don't do well and its probabaly why they did so in the first place. Wheter or not the project would've turned into a "Nintendo Playstation" is mystery. But I think had that happen, it wouldn't be the system we have today.

Some of you guys are really in denial. What James said is true. Nintendo was making a CD system with Sony, it was even going to be 32 bit (the codename was Playstation X, which is why Playstation is referred to as PSX right now). Nintendo for some reason also approcahed Philips for the CD drive, which of course pissed off Sony. In this whole process Nintendo just called the whole thing off, mainly because it was taking so long and the Sega CD flopped. So Sony took those plans and adopted them into the Playstation we now know, and since Nintendo pulled out they gave Philips the rights to Nintendo characters on it's CD-i system (which is how we got the really bad CD-i Zelda and Mario games).

So Nintendo and Sony basically made the Playstation at first, there were even prototypes supposedly. You can find this info on most any big gaming site like www.classicgames.com. It's not some BS conspiracy.

Sony made it up to Nintendo by letting Nintendo license some of their software. Such as the Bloody Roar software, 1,2, and,3 were all for the PSX Primal Fury was for the cube!   :tasty:

They never really stole it, they only took an idea that would have died and made it into something very successful. Nintendo approached Phillips because...the company co-founded the compact disc a long time ago and they were confident that their drive technologies would be a lot better than Sony's. The archetecure was planned by both companies, Nintendo and sony, but the devices inside are completely different...mostly consisting of LSI logic's ultra small components and Sony's own parts.

Well, the SNES CD add-on probably would have used the EXT. port on the bottom of the SNES. It's also used for the SNES modem over in Japan (it was never released outside of Japan), though. It wasn't too popular, so that's probably why they didn't release it anywhere else... Kind of like the Nintendo 64 Disk Drive.
