Tekken 4 and Virtua Fighter 4

ok, last week I bought a japanese ps2 with tekken 4 and virtua fighter 4, I was so happy, until I played virtua fighter 4 that is....

the game.....is, well, not as enjoyable as the previous installments, particulary VF2, which I liked the most, its just a tad bit too slow, and just not enough combos in the game, they say the game is more technical and not for button tappers, strange, my friends came over, hardly plays any fighting games, and button tapped like hell and it still worked....

the game ain't bad, it's just I thought it would be better....

but tekken 4 on the other hand....

what can I say, the game is arcade perfect, I haven't had this much fun playing a fighting game since soul calibur on the dreamcast, and before that it was tekken 3, the king of tekken, namely myself, heh, is finally back at home!

ps. keep away from Jin when in the arcades, his moves have been completely changed, though I think I've said that before, apparently as the story goes, he purposely forgot his mishima style fighting because he was so disgusted with his family, or something, heh....

Seph you lucky dog, hehe. I won't be playing a home version of Tekken 4 until August or September. Trust me though, Virtua Fighter 4 isn't necessarily a button masher's game. If someone plays against the computer, they can learn their techniques, copy them, and use them against the player. That's why it's important to learn a few of the characters' more in depth techniques. If a button masher fights a really skilled player, their moves will be countered and they'll be beaten into the ground. :toothy:

you mean you can counter? good god, I've only been blocking, haven't even seen any counters in the game, I've become good with one of the elevel player's though, pai, she reminds me of tekken's xiaoyu, heh, its still a decent game, I just need to get into it a bit more, but with tekken 4 here, lol....

and I highly recommend buying tekken 4 upon release in the UK or US, which'll be a while, heh heh, as darth vader once said....

"the force....she is with....tekken 4! .......on release only on playstation 2, a good console, a console which makes you proud to be wearing a helmet"

see, if the dark lord, darth vader himself thinks the game rocks, then :p to you. heh heh....

Oh yeah, no doubt that Tekken rules. I prefer it to the Virtua Fighter Series too, so :p right back at ya. lol. I wish I could give a really good reason. But, to be honest I don't have one, except that I just find Tekken to be more fun. Well, I like the characters/story better also, but that's it.

Anyway, yeah, there are counters. I was, yeah, you guessed it, button mashing so that I could work my way up to 1st Dan and unlock Jacky's VF1 Character Model, and Sarah introduced me to counters the hard way. :(

In the end, most fighting game purists would probably laugh at you and I for preferring Tekken, but the heck with them, if Darth Vader's behind Tekken, everything's cool. :smirk:

so true, heck, in japan, VF4 is doing loads better than T4, bah, I prefer tekken, maybe because of its more "in your face" style of fighting....

I prefer both games to be masterpieces besides Soul Calibur.;)

Anyways, It'll be a while until Tekken 4 releases out to the U.S., but from experiences at the arcades I just love Hwoarang's martial art kicks, Christie's breakdancing kicks, Steve Fox boxing punches, Kuma's great looking red T-shirt, etc. Probaly the most thing I enjoy about this game are the air juggles, its just a blast comboing a character in air as he/she falls after being attacked.

As for Virtua Fighter 4, everything that I love about Tekken 4 is also in some way in this game too the air juggles, character moves, etc. The Kumite Mode in the game is a very nice feature, working your way up to challenging fights and collecting parts for a customized character of your own, now that is just addictively fun and awsome!

Oh yeah, I have a question Sephiroth, did you by any chance got to play the Tekken Force Mode in Tekken 4?If so I would love to hear experience from it.:)

force mode is awesome! you have more freedom than in tekken 3's force mode, you can now lock on to enemies, though you are still restricted somewhat in the levels, the last level in the game is pretty damn hard....

Heaven's Cloud-yeah, I was kind of surprised when I first played jin and found out his moves had been completely changed, I've been practicing with him quite a bit, getting better ad even learnt a ten hit combo, I'll be practicing with king tonight to learn his new multi part throws since I already know al the one's from the previous tekken games....

I should comment on the endings, they are not cgi like in tekken 3, they are in game graphics, and damn, some of the endings are pretty damn long, like xiaoyu, its nothing but talking, and since I don't speak japanese I don't understand a word she is saying, lol....

I just want to remind you to keep on practicing. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: As soon as a Tekken with online play comes out, I'm going to beat the crap out of you and take the title of "Best Tekken Player Ever." :p

As far as the endings go, it's all good. I'm satisfied with longer endings, than short, flashy computer generated ones. Anyhow, the PS2 pumps out near CG quality anyway. If you look at Tekken Tag's in game graphics compared to Tekken 1's into/endings, you'll see who the clear winner is.

Ah yes, I've heard alot about Tekken 4, from magazines and the website (btw, if you want information on all the characters there is an official one).

One character I'd like to play as is Yoshimitsu, he's got a totally new look, with his bug wings and such... but Safer said that he can't do slashes anymore :(...

Another is Combot, he's like Moku-Jin and Tetsu-Jin, but instead of changing each round, he stays fixed as the same character each fight. He was built (I think) by Lee, so if Lee loses, then Combot has a chance... I dunno, I just think the storyline is really interesting.

As for VF4, I can't say anything because I don't know the series well at all.

But Soul Caliber 2 is gonna be interesting, I played the first in the series (I think it was Soul Blade, yeah), and I really enjoyed it, with using the people's weapons and whatnot.

But yeah, I can't wait for these three to come out so I can get some good reviews on it (But I'll get T4 definately).

according to the story, tekken 5 will be based a year after tekken 4, heh, old man heihachi will still be around I guess, lol....

my dear cwb, you believe you can defeat me in tekken? ho ho ho, how I laugh at you! even bill clinton once said....

"you can't defeat this sephiroth guy in tekken....you have my word on it"

the graphics in the endings is still good, don't get me wrong, I just wish I understood xiaoyu's ending, I can sort of make out what happens in everyone else's endings, like bryan, but her? nothing but jabbering, bah....

For some reason, I don't think that "UK" and "soon" belong in the same sentence. :p :whoops:

And, Seph, have you tried the game in progressive scan mode yet? It must be pretty neat.

erm, yeah, just like how the us version of mgs2, ffx, and silent hill had that extra bonus cd, lol....

oh, my mistake, that was the uk, wasn't it, heh heh....

back to the point, I doubt anything extra will be put on the us version, especially since its a fighting game, so :p

shadowgohan, so you say soon, huh? I didn't think november is anytime soon, lol....

Meh, why did I say soon...? -__-;;

Anyway, I am extremely jealous of Safer, who is probably just playing T4 right now... gah.

We wait six months... but we get bonus stuff and whatnot :p

But, I know it's a long way from now, but does anyone know the release dates for Soul Caliber 2? Because I really want to get that as well as Tekken 4 :).

When comparing two fighting beauties like Tekken 4 and Virtua Fighter 4, I tend to lean towards Virtua Fighter 4 as most likely being the victor. I cannot fully say that it is better, because only those and Japan and named Sephiroth can say that they have played both on the Playstation 2. However, by testing the Tekken 4 arcade and owning Virtua Fighter 4 myself, I can tell that Virtua Fighter 4 is more challenging than Tekken 4, which some may translate to be better.

Ok, so for Virtua Fighter 4 we see the controls as so-so. But with the controls so-so, we also notice how you cannot merely press bottons to win a match. You must use strategy to learn the moves and remember how to execute them quickly in battle. The latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly portrays my point perfectly:
But don't go storming the mat in VF4 expecting to play like Tekken, because you will get kicked to the curb. Sure, both Tekken and VF4 put you in a 3D melee, but that's pretty much where the similarities end. With only three bottons-punch, kick and guard-to pull off each character's lengthy list of attacks, it's damn near impossible to win in VF4 simply by wiggling the stick and mashing on bottons.
I have to admit, I was toppled my first time against the AI because I didn't releize that you must learn the moves clearly and perfectly before going out there and putting your talent against the best. With Tekken 4, however, I got along just fine by pressing bottons sometimes, and trying specific moves other times, both of which got me quite far.

The one thing that will most likely change the fate of Tekken 4 and show the true winner of this battle, is the kind of mini-games and modes it will allow. I will be buying it, either way, but I am hoping a great improvement from Tekken 3, or it won't be worth the money. I mean to say, if Tekken 4 comes up with a mode that challanges that of Virtua Fight 4's Kumite mode, it could vastly improve it's popularity.

hmm, I guess I should make an update on my opinions of the two games about now....

simply put, BOTH games are awesome, these two are must have titles, I love tekken 4 for its in your face fighting style, and I love VF4 for how complicated its fighting is, both these games are much different fighting games in their own rights....

I've been playing VF4 a lot more than I use to, only disappointment is the lack of characters, having said that, tekken 4 also lacks characters, 19 characters, unless you count the "alternate" characters, like pressing X on christie will get you eddie, then we have a few more characters....

force mode is cool in T4, but kumite in VF4 just rules, heh, it's pretty damn addictive....

endings, T4 owns VF4 when it comes to endings, some of them are just so damn hilarious, *cough* Law *cough*

ahem, anyway, thats all I have to say for now....oh, I still prefer tekken 4 by the way....

Well, I tend to disagree with the basis of why you think the games play as they do. Acutal control reponsivenesss has nothing to do with which game plays better. As a matter of fact, both the Virtua Fighter and Tekken series have excellent control. Virtua Fighter 4's predecessors suffered from floaty jumps, but that was the extent of their problems.

The reason the two series play differently is because of the way the A.I is programmed and because the movements needed to do combos and some powerful moves in Tekken are slightly less complex. Anyway, the A.I. in Virtua Fighter 4 will actually learn your attack patterns, where as it probably doesn't in Tekken.

And dude, you may have gotten along fine mashing buttons in Tekken against the computer, but I can safetly say that a skilled player would whoop on you if you tried that. Seph's gonna find that out the hard way come online Tekken. Hehe, here's hoping he didn't read this whole post.

Anyway, I doubt Tekken 4 will offer anything as in-depth as Kumite mode. Tekken Force mode is just beating up hordes of fighters. That kind of game always gets boring quickly. Kumite allows you to train an A.I fighter and unlock tons of secrets. Plus, it's hard as all heck.

There is no doubt in my mind that the "control responsiveness" in these two games has nothing to do with which one is better, and I don't see how you assumed I said as such because I had not. What I did say was that default buttons of moves one must perform was much easier with Tekken. Why? Because only the four main bottons (triangle, circle, x, and square) are used, which are either either punch or kick, and any begginner could go off and just keep taping them, and sometimes even win! How is it more challenging with Virtua Fighter 4? Because triangle/x/R1 punches, circle/R2 kicks, square blocks, L1 grabs, and L2 switches body movement. It makes you think and memorize some of your moves, or else you will be kicked to the curb.

Ugh, I didn't say that I smash buttons, and I can assure you that I feel that anyone who DOES use that technique will have something coming. It is no way to play any game, much less a fighting game, and I just don't believe in doing that. However, for testing sake, I like to get a feel for the actual game. Therefore, not only do I learn the techniques and watch the best combos and whatnot, but I also try once or twice to see how a begginner would fare by doing things randomly. I merely pointed out that they would have a much better chance at winning Tekken 4 than Virtua Fighter 4. There is a big difference from testing and using regularly.

Well, okay, I guess I see what you mean. I guess you just didn't get out what you wanted to say clearly. When you said "So/so controls" it comes across as saying that Virtua Fighter 4 is harder because it has a mediocre control scheme. You kind of covered the same things I did, but that one particular phrase threw me off a bit. :p

Still though, I don't find Virtua Fighter 4's actual control setup to be complex at all. I memorized it within a few minutes and I'm not exactly what you'd call a Virtua Fighter 4 vet. I guess that Virtua Fighter 4's moves involve more mastery because they demand better timing and more involved motions.

As for mashing buttons, you said "With Tekken 4, however, I got along just fine by pressing bottons sometimes." That, my friend, sounds like you're doing a little mashing on the buttons. And come on, all in all, you're saying that even though you're not the greatest Tekken player you have a much easier time with the A.I. than you do with Virtua Fighter 4. I'm not challenging you at all here. What I am saying is that at least both games can be difficult against skilled players.

And do you know what? I play Kumite mode and am able to just repeatedly hit punch over and over again and I easily ring out a great deal of my opponents. So, you can really whoop the computer cheaply before they smarten up. I beat around seven opponents with this method before someone smartened up.

hah! you....defeat me in tekken? I think not, my crazy white friend, for you see it is I that won the tekken 3 computer exchange birmingham competition back in early 2000 where I won my butt a dreamcast, I am unbeatable, now I await the next tournament, I heard rumours that it will be tekken tag or soul calibur this time, I say boo to that!

when tekken online finally comes around, I'll be getting ready to beat some online butt!
