Ah.. Everworld? I've been wanting to read that for some time.. but I never knew I would be able to get into it. Usually I wait for someone, like you, who is serious about reading and writing to reccomend a book I'm unsure about before I read it. Thank you, I'll have to go pick up a copy now.

Justin.. I never knew there was a difference between Heracles and Herculese. What is different about them? I always thought it was just a mis-spelling.

I really like reading about Pagan mythology.

They are basically the same person. As you may know, the Romans took alot of the ideals of Gods and Goddesses from the Greeks... in fact they took almost everything from the Greeks with the exception of the arch and building in concrete.

Heracles can be seen on vase paintings fighting bulls and other animals. As well as one of the famous ones where he's wrestling another person... I can't remember his name.

Roman and Greek mythology is so similar that they are easily confused.

Well i don't see why one can't call them Mythology.... I mean... the Greeks, Egyptians, ROman, this that or the other people all found their gods and goddesses to be just as real as Christians precieve their God to be. They all had their sacred texts that they followed... well in the Egyptian's case, paper wasn't invented when they first came about, but while they were still in existance.... papyrus paper that is... but still... anyway back to the point... they all felt as strongly, if not stronger to their gods/goddesses as modern day religions do.... there's not much difference besides those religions aren't practiced anymore.... Maybe one day, Christianity won't be practiced anymore... then... it will just be thought of as Mythology?... I'd like to see that day myself... however I know I won't... In fact I don't think anyone n the next thousands of years will... not till something drastic happens to the earth... or God just comes down and tells everyone to shut up or something lol.

The term Mythology is kinda rude. Those people put their lives for theirs gods... they followed everything, did everything for MANY MANY years... and the respect we give them is "mythology"? Blah... oh well.... one day all your religions will be considered mythology, I think.... how will you feel then?
Sorry to quote all of what TN said and in a way I understand him. But when I saw this question I didn't think about the gods/ goddesses that made the religion but I was thinking of all the mystical places and people who did god-like things such as Herules and many others. But as to the remark of it being a religion yes it was and you're right they should have more respect of past religions such as the Greeks, Romans, Celtics, and many others that are considered that way( when if fact they were religions.
But to get back to the subject at hand..
I say my favorite myths...not mythologies...
Were the Greek myths...like Hercules and Jason...
I just loved the thought of imaginary animals...like the half-goat half humans creatures...and the wild ban-chies..and sirens.....and so many other things they had...
But I also liked the greek gods...but I'd have to say my favorite one was Athena....

He's the guy that wrote Eaters of the Dead that I mentioned earlier! It's not a fictional story...it's a collection of various bits and pieces of the Ibn Fadlan manuscript. Go get it!

Actually, there are slight differences in Heracles and Hercules. For instance Hercules(from Roman mythology) was a full-fledged god...where are Heracles(from Greek mythology) was only a demi-god. Other than that, TN was completely correct. Ancient Roman religion copied Etruscan religion...which mirrored Greek even moreso that did Roman...o_O...

I love these two types of mythology, too. Sometimes, though, keeping track of all the Greek gods and goddesses can get awfully confusing.

By the way, Final_Flash, isn't Maori mythology from New Zealand, or did I just make that up?

His characters were talking about science, and the mathematican said something along the lines of how in the future, people were going to laugh at us for believing in protons and electrons and stuff, just like we laughed at the people 50 years before us for believing what they did in science at the time.

i see your point, but i don't think this opinion encompasses all of science. many things discovered a hundred years ago still hold true today. but i'm sure some things will be disproven, & even seen as ridiculous or primitive.

a good book to read if you want to get started on a new type of mythology is The First Love Stories (can't remember author right now). it basically has the "adam & eve" type tales from various religions & myths. off the top of my head, it has shiva & sati (hindu), layla & majnun (arabian), psyche & eros (greek), isis & osiris (egyptian), tristan & isolde (celtic), etc. it's very well written, w/ detailed accounts of the relationships. warning: most of them don't end up very well, unless you count being together in the afterlife.

All those types of Mythology are really cool I will admit.
I have dabbled into each at one point or another in my life so far.
Greek is quite interenting, as is celtic.
I however enjoy the mythology of the city of New Orleans.
Many people think that Anne Rice started the New Orleans vampires. That is not true. When the French gave the Louisiana area to their convicts to live in after the Louisiana Purchace (Or sometime around there) they realized that after a few years the female population was decreasing rapidly. Men outnumbered women 5-1. A group of Catholic Nuns decided to ask all the homeless women they could find to come over to the new world and live in the Louisiana area.
When they gathered enough they gave them new cloths and shipped them off to the new world. When they got there the men were waiting for them. They noted that the women were bringing large coffin shaped suitcases with them. They would joke around and say things like
"Hey Piere, I heard that women packed heavily but these women bring their dead relatives too, hahaha."
Soon the population of the colony decreased even farther. The colonists had no idea about viruses and micro biology so they blamed it on the vampires that the Catholic Church sent over to kill them all with.
They sent emisaries to the main Catholic Church and were refused. Soon after they built a large library-like structure in New Orleans. The windowshutters on the third floor were bolted shut with 800 blessed screws. No one except the highest level people in the Catholic Church are alowed in the building. Every so often after the sun sets the shutters are seen open. What I want to know is what continually opens and shuts the shutters.
Also about ten years ago there was a murder outside the church that is connected to the building. The local athorities blammed it on a wild dog attack but me, like many others, think not. The autopsy files from the corroner were leaked out from the office. It stated in the files that nore than 80% of the fluid in the bodies were gone. It is impossible to drain even 60% in an imbalming proccess. The victims throats were litterally ripped out . They were propped up next to eachother in a sitting position. No dog could do that.
There are a many sites online dedicated to wierd New Orleans stuff like this. I suggest you check it out if this has interester you.

Char: My friend, everyone! *applause spreads throughout the room as DOK takes several bows.

Anyway, one question I've always asked is this: What turned these religions that many people believed in into mythology? What stopped everyone from believing? What turned these highly evolved cultures (at the time ;)), into nothing more than a fable? I don't know, this sounded much better in my head, but I hope I got my question through clearly enough.
