This is one of those games which is cashing in on the whole "mass violence in the streets" craze, which GTAIII really brought forward lately.

Problem is, violence isn't enough. It won't make a game good.

GTAIII was fun because it had a plotline...many different characters/stories and a huge level of interaction and movement.

I think some companies need to learn what makes a game truly fun.

Hmm yes, this is not a great game. As been said, but it could not be expected by Rockstar to make another huge hit straight away, god help us what the movie's going to be like of SOE, although, maybe quite fun. *Cough*
In my opinion, one thing that I was hoping to see was the citizens getting involved in the action where you have allied gangs or so on. This game let me down, but I look forward to Grandia 2 and FF X etc.

I also believe that State of Emergency was dissapointing I bought it on one of the days after it was released and only played it a few hour before tiring of it. I only purchassed it because I believed it was going to be like Grand Theft Auto 3 just because of the Rockstar label on the box. Which I believe got other fans of Grand Theft Auto 3 pick up this game also obviously because it was the second best selling game for the month of March. But the game will make a great paper weight. Also about the subject of the SOE movie I have also heard that a script is in developement and from Extended Play (Tech TV videogame show) a pretty reliable source. I must agree with you all about this game, the graphics are rubbish, the character freedom is horrible, the life span is ok, but it does get quite reppetitive. When i first played it i loved it, maybe because it was a new idea, i borrowed it off sephiroth, and even once tried to steal it !!!!!(thats, try to steal it off seph I mean)

But this bad excuse for a game just puts on a whole lot more of load down on the sep 11 thingy, and who knows what the film will be like!!!?

I don't deny your aspects of the game, but I predict the movie to be quite interesting.

I feel that the movie would be exciting to see exactly how the producers would interpret such a great panic in a city. To see what might actually go on would be thrilling, at least from my stand point, since most of us have never been in that situation before. And best of all, it will indeffinitly be set apart from the game in the fact that it won't have time to get boring or repetitive. It was a great idea, and it will no doubt bring in thousands just for playing off a video game.

I will definitly see the film, and hope for the best. By the way, does anyone know who is going to be making it? I don't exactly see Rockstar in the movie fanchise for some reason.

So your basically into the movie for the acting?
Anyway, what will the gangs be like, will they be all suited up mafia goons, or funky afro-man basketball players, and another thing, will it be a one man army type of thing or a group where they all kick butt and where one dies and they go in for vengeance... Ive said too much now *gulp*.

I think SoE was good for a whole half hour, then it goes down hill into boredom. I started liking it again after I got out of the Chaos mode, and played Revolution mode. It's a mission based mode, and it makes it a little fun to play again. But once again it get's old fast. Fun for a little while, but in the long runs its boring, dull, and tedious.

Yeah, I agree. There was no substance to the game other than shock value. Basically, the game road the coat tails of Grand Theft Auto 3.

I'm not really looking forward to the film. It probably won't be anything like the game. Most likely, it'll be a poor man's Die Hard or Lethal Weapon.

Call me weird, but I think that SOE is one of the greatest games ever.
Many people think that this is a "play for a few hours" game, but it's really more of a "10 min. now, 12 min. later" game. In fact, I just played Chaos in the last stage and I can only say that this game owns.

State of Emergency is horrible. I played it a while ago (I rented it and attempted to enjoy it)...but really, it's one of the most simplistic and pointless games out there.

Problem is, a game like GTAIII comes along...which manages to merge the aspects of a free roaming environment with a fairly strong objective-based gameplay...and everyone wants to copy.

And the problem there is, people aren't copying the aspects of GTAIII that made it great. They're copying the whole "mass violence in a real world" idea.

And that doesn't work if the underlying video game is poor...and in this case, it was very poor.

The designers didn't seem to have any real objective with this game. Many of the goals are arbitrary in nature and don't seem to have any real point. Plus, the character is so limited when it comes to interaction and movement -- in GTAIII, you could interact with almost any object in the game, but in SoE, the game creates an illusion of deep interaction, whilst actually being a highly superficial experience.

I wish people wouldn't buy games like this just because they're published by Rockstar and include aspects which might seem similar to GTAIII...

By doing so, we are only sending a message to developers that we are quite happy to accept spoon-fed crap. And frankly, I'd rather not accept such games.

I really hope that this isn't the start of a growing trend in gaming...I hope more companies take a lead from developers such as Amusement Vision, Nintendo EAD and Maxis; let's encourage some innovation and new ideas...rather than this rehashed rubbish, wrapped up in a glossy package.

I know, isn't it wonderful?

Can a company copy itself?-_-
Anyway, if you want a deep story, go play Final Fantasy. This is an arcade-style game.

Don't worry, since I just borrowed it with my friend's PS2. I'd buy it if I had a one, anyway.

It sickens me too see everyone compare it with GTA III, just because they are made by the same company and they are both violent...

Well, I'm going to keep this short and sweet Smokey Joe, as there is a simple explanation to the comparisons.

Rockstar games released the incredibly deep, rewarding Grand Theft Auto III and it became an instant classic.

Shortly thereafter, they release State of Emergency, which has ample amounts of violence, but absolutely nothing worthwhile in areas of gameplay.

Beat 'em ups usually grow old fast, but State Of Emergency is incredibly stale and uninspired even for its genre.

My point is, that someone in Rockstar figured that people didn't care about Grand Theft Auto III's deep gameplay, rather they figured it sold because of the violence alone.

Thus, they crapped out State of Emergency, not to satisfy gamers with rewarding gameplay, but to show off how controversial they can be.

Exactly, CWB hit the nail on the head.

The comparisons between SoE and GTAIII are completely fair and reasonable; the two games set out to achieve the same goal (a free-roaming interactive environment with similar "thug" objectives).

The difference is that GTAIII successfully blends the more violent/extreme aspects with a truly strong mission-based game system.

Whereas SoE is just a mess of people running around with no real solid gameplay involved. It's simply a matter of running around and tapping buttons - it gets old after five minutes.

I can see why younger kids would enjoy it (the violence factor and the no-brainer gameplay), but people who enjoyed the slightly more challenging/interactive GTAIII can only be dissappointed by this game.

I love GTA III, and I believe it's Rockstar best effort yet, but I also love SOE. However, I'll admit that it could've been better if they had taken a few more months to add some more mechanics.

If they had allowed you the entry into buildings and the ability to drive vehicles, I would have loved it much much more.

What they needed to do, was add more to the control scheme (it needed to be more intuitive), improve in-game objectives and missions (add some more variety, challenge and uniqueness) and just generally put more emphasis on the gameplay.

GTAIII was developed by DMA and not Rockstar (Rockstar is nothing but a publishing label)...and SoE was made by a different developer. This is why GTAIII is so much better. :)
