Zidargh
Dont know if many people have played this, but Sephiroth would agree but the prequal and sequal are classics. The flexibility and independence in the game, true gaming. Well my opinion anyway.

Geist
Shenmue was the game that was going to make me buy a Dreamcast. I hope they port it to the PS2.
Red
Shenmue was a brilliant game, unrivalled in it's ingenuity. People who have played that game are enlighted gamers. It was truely fantastic (although not hugely popular), and deserves the respect of all gamers.

James
I moved this here because the Shenmue series is now moving to Xbox (with Shenmue 2). Shenmue was released in Japan, Australia and Europe...but never made it to US shores. This is primarily because SEGA wasn't profitable with the series and they decided to produce Shenmue 2 for Xbox in the USA (and possibly in other territories too). So you can expect the Xbox version to have a whole host of improvements. :)

Yeah, but bear in mind that SEGA didn't anticipate the demise of Dreamcast, either. So anything can happen. They are planning on making 16 "Chapters" of the game...amounting to five or six games. But if Shenmue 2 isn't successful on Xbox, I suspect they'll either port the game to multiple systems...or move the series to another console. Either way, it doesn't seem likely that they'll abandon the series. Though, I have yet to see anything of Shenmue 2 for Xbox, despite the game being in development for quite some time. Hopefully E3 will shed some light on the subject.
Charles
The first Shenmue was definitely beautiful. The graphics were superior to most PS2 games for quite some time. Included, were small details like independent leaves falling from trees (something that the makers of DOA3 bragged about in their own game). Really though, the acting was pretty poor. Ryo never developed much as a likable character to me. He personality in the dubbing was monotone--robotic in a way. The actual gameplay was pretty good though. There was sure an astonishing amount of interaction with the surroundings. I remember going through the refrigerator and practically every drawer in his house! The "real world" system was neat too, if a little flawed. Surroundings actually changed to reflect seasons and weather patterns, all of which suprised me with their detail. My only real problem with the first game was how boring it could be sometimes (a complaint that a lot of people have). Usually, I could find something to do, but a lot of the time I just wanted to get on with the story instead of playing darts in the local bar for about seven hours (game time). I was going to get the second game. T'was too expensive though. I had the money, but I couldn't see spending $70 bucks for a game (with the converter) when an Xbox version will come out that I'll want to buy when the time comes. Geist
So what was the basic storyline on the first game? Was you're guy in a gang or something?
Charles
Originally posted by Kouberei So what was the basic storyline on the first game? Was you're guy in a gang or something?
Nah, Ryo was squeaky clean. At the outset of the game, Ryo comes home to find a mysterious man named Lan Di beating on his father. Ryo tries to help, but Lan Di is too strong. This msterious man and his gang want Ryo's father's Dragon Mirror. Reluctantly, Ryo's father hands it over in exchange for his son's safety. Although Lan Di allows Ryo to live, as promised, he kills Ryo's father (as they have some sort of unresolved past). The basic plot of the game is revenge. Ryo goes on a quest to find out as much about Lan Di as possible while hunting down the other mirror to prevent Lan Di from becoming all powerful. There are sub plots like a love story, but I basically covered the gist of it. ;)

Turkey
I still have the first, and I really loved it. Sadly, I couldn't get the import of the second. To make things worse, I can't buy an X-Box unless it lowers to $100, or a friend lets me borrow it...
